Festive Spirit Will Shine At Christmas Show “The holiday spirit comes once a year, and this show has it,” said Kathy Yoder, describing the Root’s Christmas Show. The show will be held on Saturday, Nov. 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature more than 250 vendors. “We particularly like to accept artisans and people who make their own products,” noted Yoder, special events manager for Root’s. Items for sale will include holiday décor, gift baskets, candles, baby items, dog clothing and treats, spray paint art, toys, leather goods, braided rugs and much more.
“Santa Claus - and I think he’s the real Santa - will be here between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.,” Yoder stated. “He and Mrs. Santa will walk among the crowd and give out candy canes and goodwill.” Food will be available to purchase, including soft pretzels, french fries, baked goods, soup, hamburgers, barbecue chicken, ice cream and more. “There are also tons of door prizes all day long,” Yoder commented. The show is always held the Saturday before Thanksgiving, and this is its 17th year. “We set up outside in the farmers market area, filling all the outside spaces,” Yoder
remarked, adding that buildings 9 and 10 are also open. “We also set up in the flea market area, and the Artisan Mill and the Emporium are both open as well as many outside vendors.” In addition to supporting local vendors, the show benefits local nonprofits. Nonperishable food items will be collected for the Manheim Central Food Pantry as well as donations for Centerville Pet Rescue and Angels Among Us Animal Sanctuary. “We also have a number of charity spaces that we give each year for different local charities to set up for free,” she said.
As of Nov. 2, the top five requests for 2-1-1 assistance in Pennsylvania were housing and shelter at 42.1%, utilities at 17%, health care and COVID-19 assistance at 10%, employment and income 8.7%, and food at 6.2%. Giving from pg 1 are available thanks to the LCCF and presenting sponsors. More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be a registered 501(c)(3) organization in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. Each participating nonprofit has its own profile on the ExtraGive website, and some include a nondiscriminatory policy, which is a new feature. “This is a nice addition because it helps people know that their values are reflected in the organization to which they’re donating,” stated Tracy Cutler, executive vice president of LCCF.

The list goes on and on. On one day, 24 hours, the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) provides a platform in which people can donate money to participating nonprofits serving this region. Over $60 million has been raised for local organizations by more than 40,000 donors since LCCF started the ExtraGive. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s ExtraGive brought in about $13.4 million. This year’s ExtraGive is set for Friday, Nov. 19. Beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. All participating organizations will receive a prorated portion of the stretch pool, which will total at least $500,000. an organization to support when the then-director of ECHOS spoke at their church. “We realized there was a place right here in town that we could support.” The first year, they purchased presents for children from a list ECHOS supplied, but since then, they’ve donated proceeds from the race for the organization to use as it sees fit. Since its inception in 2016, ECHOS has served more than 2,600 people in the Elizabethtown area. The organization provides family and individual supportive services, information and resources, eviction prevention and diversion, emergency shelter programs, job readiness and workforce development and more. Grace said interest in the Great Turkey Hunt has increased every year except 2020, when the race was virtual and participation slightly decreased, and she encourages people to sign up and come out for some community fun. “It’s a great way to exercise before you eat your turkey, to burn those calories you’re going to eat later,” she said. “It’s a family-friendly event. We have our runners who run for time, but we have lots of families who come out and have made it a family tradition. W hile your turkey’s cooking, come out for a run.” Race-day sign-ups will begin at 7 a.m. There is also an option to participate virtually in the race this year. To register in advance, visit https://runsignup.com and search for “The Great Turkey Hunt.”

Lancaster Cancer Center celebrated its official relocation on Oct. 28 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Patients, families, physicians, professionals and friends joined the Lancaster Cancer Center team at its new location at 703 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. Grant Will Help Families In Need The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) announced the receipt of a grant from Conagra Brands Foundation to help provide food to children and families in need. This grant will enable the CPFB to increase its capacity to distribute food to its partners through the purchase of new pallet jacks and other essential warehouse equipment. The gift will also help the food bank expand its equity, diversity, and inclusion programs to address inequities of hunger in communities of color. Conagra Brands Foundation has partnered with Feeding America, a domestic hunger relief organization, to help address hunger in communities where Conagra employees live and work.
Conagra locations in central Pennsylvania have partnered with the food bank for more than 20 years, with employees actively volunteering their time and supporting various events and initiatives such as Summer Feeding Programs for youths. New this year, Conagra Brands Foundation made an additional funding commitment to enable food banks to address racial and equity disparities in local communities. The CPFB is committed to addressing these inequities in the months and years ahead and is working with its partners to make sure these communities have access to nutritious food. For more information on CPFB, visit www.centralpafood bank.org or call 717-564-1700.

For more than half a century, people have been peeking into the homes of Marietta residents at Christmastime. The 55th annual Marietta Candlelight Tour of Homes will continue this tradition on Sunday, Dec. 5, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. “We have eight homeowners who have graciously opened their homes and decorated them in their own style for Christmas,” said Jason Spickler, who is co-chair of the tour along with Rebecca Baltozer. The tour is hosted by the Marietta Restoration Associates (MRA), who operate the
Old Town Hall Museum, 3 W. Walnut St., and the Union Meeting House, 80 N. Waterford Ave., which will be part of the tour as well. A tree lighting and an appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus will take place at the Old Town Hall Museum at 5 p.m. Throughout the day, the Union Meeting House will feature dance demonstrations by World Dance Lancaster as well as Christmas music played on an 1847 Henry Knauff pipe organ. The site will also feature a Make-A-Wish Christmas tree. Spickler noted that this year’s tour includes at least three homes that have never
been featured before. “We try to get a variety of homes,” he said. “That’s why people come back year after year, because they are not going to see the same things.” A search committee begins looking for homes to feature early in the year, he said, and although some homes have been featured in the tour more B U Y O N E S U B SCR I P TI O N than once, the committee tries + G I V E O N E FO R FR E E ! not to revisit a site for at least 24 Issues of Lancaster County Magazine for $16.95 five years. buildings in Marietta. “Our organization has been instrumental over the years in helping to preserve historic landmarks in town,” Spickler stated. He added that although Marietta is full of older homes, the tour offers a chance to see a variety of places. “We have homes in town that are modern. We have homes that were built in the early 1800s. It’s really an eclectic mix,” he said. “It’s about how the homeowners choose to decorate their homes and what their style is. You never know what they’re going to surprise you with when you walk in the door.” Advance tickets are available for the tour at several locations, which are listed at www.mariettarestoration.org. There is a discount for purchasing tickets in advance, but tickets can also be purchased at the event in the Donegal Intermediate School parking lot; at the First National Bank building, 100 W. Market St.; or at the Old Town Hall Museum.

The Fulton Theatre’s lineup for this fall includes Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” as well as “Snow White.” Fulton Theatre performs at the Fulton Opera House, 12 N. Prince St., Lancaster. “Cinderella” opened on Nov. 11 and will continue on select dates through Sunday, Jan. 2. Inspired by the 1997 teleplay starring Brandy Norwood and Whitney Houston, this show is the largest production in the Fulton’s history. It features over 250 custom and handcrafted costumes, commissioned and created in collaboration with Maine State Music Theatre, and a carriage built exclusively for the Fulton Theatre in New York.
Performances of “Snow White” will take place between Saturday, Nov. 20, and Thursday, Dec. 30. In this production, with original book, music, and lyrics by Marc Robin and Curt Dale Clark, the seven dwarves grow up to be seven historical figures, and Snow White takes a journey to search for true happiness and learn to confidently make decisions for herself. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 717397-7425 or visit www.the fulton.org. Masks are required for all productions and must be worn at all times, except while eating or drinking in the theater or lobby areas.
