e believe that serving others is both beneficial for the organizations we support as well as for our students’ personal well-being,” said Stephen Fulmer dean of students at Manheim Central High School. “Serving others creates a sense of purpose, community and also allows students to learn perspectives from outside of their everyday circles.” With that in mind, about 330 juniors and seniors at the high school, along with students in the School to Work program, participated

pavilions for Manheim Borough and the concession stand at the Rettew Stadium,” Fulmer shared. “Other groups were directly interacting with residents of residential homes. Some organizations offered a brief presentation and/or tour of their facilities and shared the mission and information about their organizations for students to learn more how these great

organizations serve people both locally and internationally.” He added that the high school’s Baron Nation Network film crew accompanied students throughout the day, capturing photos and video to show the collective student body highlights of the day at a later date. Students signed up for their volunteer project, choosing an organization with a mission that matters to them.

This method aims to build student enthusiasm for the effort and ensures a strong working partnership with the organization. “The organizations we support absolutely love hosting our students,” Fulmer commented. “Tasks that may take one or two people weeks to accomplish are completed within a matter of hours due to hosting our student groups.”

Pick up some decorating inspiration and get into the holiday spirit by attending the Women’s Club of Manheim’s Holiday Tour of Homes. The tour will be held from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3, and it will feature six private homes and three historic buildings. “You can tour the homes in any order you would like with no starting or ending point,” explained Karen Lewis, tour chair. “There are usually so many different decorating styles and ideas with a good mix of family traditions and collections.” Homes on the tour will include a brick farmhouse built in 1767 that has been owned by a local family for more than 100 years. Decorations will include fresh greens, dried fruit and other natural elements, and handmade Nativities and gingerbread will also be featured. A Victorian-style home will showcase a collection of nutcrackers, one of which is more than 7.5 feet tall. At another site, a church pew from the original Ruhl’s Church building is a focal point of the foyer, and a nature-inspired winter wonderland theme will feature

Likewise, the students have given positive feedback about the program. “The students really enjoy this day,” Fulmer said. “Students are often surprised to learn of these great organizations that are right here in our backyard. Students come away from the day feeling refreshed and rejuvenated after giving back.” Fulmer emphasized that the Going Beyond program is always looking for community partners, and he encourages organizations to reach out to him at the high school for more information. “I imagine there are organizations that could benefit from

our support that we may not be aware of,” he said. “Our desire is to give back and support our community.” He noted that the program has long-term benefits for the students beyond one day of service. “Learning from others’ successes and challenges across a variety of age groups and demographics provides opportunities to grow in empathy and understanding,” Fulmer said. “These opportunities also allow students to better understand their own personal interests, skill sets and potential future paths to explore.”

A miniature world exists in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St. The Train Guys have set up an elaborate display that features homes, businesses, historical buildings, mountains and more. “When people come here, they can expect a ton of action and a lot of fun,” said Craig Coble, a member of The Train Guys. “If they had a train set in their younger days, it’s going to bring back a whole bunch of memories for them, and we see this all the time with our older visitors. For kids, they didn’t know this stuff existed or exists now. It’s just fun to watch their expressions, all the laughs and excitement.” The Train Guys, who include about 25 members, begin setting up the display in mid-October. They officially work three

days a week to get ready for the holiday season, but individual members come in almost daily to set up the layout, test the track, wire accessories and make sure the 50 push buttons located throughout the display all function properly. “The display will look different this year, because we have moved some things around and we have some new things,” Coble explained. A snow-covered mountain greets visitors as they walk in the door, and a new canal, complete with barges and three bridges, is featured along the first side of the display. “It’s going to be genuine simulated water,” Coble joked. Other new features include a lighthouse, an atomic power plant, a FedEx building and a rocket launcher. “We have a two- or threestory building that’s on fire, and it’s surrounded by firetrucks

trying to extinguish the blaze,” Coble said. One section of the display is decided to historic sites in Elizabethtown, including a replica of the Klein Chocolate Company baseball field, the old firehouse and an old schoolhouse, which now houses the Elizabethtown Historical Society. The buildings are accompanied by photographs of the actual site as it looked years ago. Along with the O-gauge trains and tracks on the elevated table in the room, the display features a garden-gauge setup on the floor, where children can often be found lying down on their stomachs, entranced by the trains, Coble said. As visitors exit the room, they’ll be treated to a new, unique track. “This track has special circuitry in it, so as the train runs, there’s flashing colored Christmas lights all through the track that follow

the train,” Coble noted. “We think it’s a neat thing to send people out the door with Christmas spirit.” The Train Guys will open their display with a special night for first responders from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30. The first 50 first responders who visit will receive a free ticket to be entered into a drawing for a train set. That evening is also the tree lighting in Elizabethtown, so visitors are encouraged to see the display and then head outside at 7 p.m. for the festivities. The display will also be open on Saturdays, Dec. 2, 9, 16 and 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Thursdays, Dec. 7, 14, 21 and 28, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.; and Friday, Dec. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. Proceeds from the display benefit the Elizabethtown Public Library.

LCSWMA urges proper disposal of batteries The Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) has launched a public education campaign to encourage proper disposal of rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries containing metals such as lithium and nickel are found in many common household items, including power tools, toys, cellphones, laptops, watches, vape devices and electric toothbrushes. If a rechargeable battery becomes damaged, it can cause a chemical reaction that creates a spark or explosion. Rechargeable batteries in the waste stream are prone to damage due to the impact from equipment and machinery during the waste management process. Fires in

garbage trucks and waste processing facilities are on the rise and pose a safety risk to waste disposal personnel. Members of the public should not keep end-of-life rechargeable batteries or put them in the trash or recycling. Free drop-off of endof-life batteries, both alkaline and rechargeable, is available at LCSWMA’s drive-through Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 1299 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. To find other collection points, visit www.safebatterydisposal .com. This webpage, available in English and Spanish, includes information regarding specialty batteries such as e-bike and electric vehicle batteries as well as battery handling tips.
