Deemer Releases “Manheim In The (Not So) Roaring 1920s” By Chelsea Peifer

Henry E. “Hank” Deemer thought that he was finished chronicling some of Manheim’s history after completing his fifth book in 2018, until - lo and behold - he came into possession of more than 175 original editions of the Manheim Sentinel. The bulk of those yellowed newspapers were from the 1920s and had once belonged to well-known general store owner Elias Kready. “I couldn’t resist taking a peek at Manheim in the Roaring ’20s,” said Deemer. Deemer’s newest book,

“Manheim in the (Not So) Roaring 1920s,” is a scrapbook of articles, photographs, and advertisements of that decade through the perspective of the Manheim Sentinel. In the foreword, Deemer notes that he had little idea of what to expect as he pored over the stack of Sentinels. “I think I was so mentally preoccupied with what I knew had been the explosive volatility of that decade from having read reprints of glaring headlines from New York, Philadelphia, Lancaster, and York newspapers,” wrote Deemer. “I found very little of that very violence,

mayhem, and hard times in these Sentinels.” Deemer credits longtime Manheim Sentinel editor Harry Trout with using the weekly newspaper to unite the community of Manheim during the 1920s. “He was a fiend on commerce and went on an editorializing rampage,” said Deemer. “He used his position as owner and editor - along with his state and local connections - to rattle cages in and out of town.” In fact, as Deemer worked on this book, he felt it became somewhat of a tribute to Trout and his long-lasting impact on Manheim. Memorial Plaza Will Honor Area Veterans

By Chelsea Peifer

On the 100th anniversary of Veterans Day, the Manheim Veterans Memorial Committee (MVMC) announced the start of its capital campaign. The committee, composed of volunteers from the Manheim area, strives to honor residents of Manheim and the surrounding townships who served in the military during times of peace and war. The goal is to create a plaza at the borough’s Veterans Memorial Park, adjacent to the Manheim Central High School stadium. The planned plaza will include flagpoles for the standards of the Army, Navy,

accessories are also featured. The interactive elements of the display, which has upwards of 50 push buttons, are one of the things that Coble said visitors tend to most appreciate. Several new push button accessories have been added for 2019, as well as new track loops, a third level of track, a police station, a flying saucer abducting a cow, and enhancements to the perennially popular circus setup. “Last year was our best year ever. We had well over 4,600 visitors, and we’re hoping for even more this year,” Coble stated. Costumed greeters - such as a railroad police officer and an engineer - track attendance and interact with guests at the event. Historical Elizabethtown buildings are part of the setup, such as a miniature version of the Klein Chocolate Company stadium, which was built in Elizabethtown in 1919. “Most of the volunteers have a lot of history knowledge, whether it’s about real railroads, toy trains, or Elizabethtown itself,” noted Coble. “And all of those pieces of history link to so many others.” Volunteer John Gantz worked for Amtrak for 33 and a half years and has been part of The Train Guys for seven years. “It’s all about the kids,” said Gantz. “It’s good for me to be with a good group of guys here and just seeing the kids enjoy it all every year.” Aidan Mollohan, 17, said that this is his sixth year helping The Train Guys. He plans to pursue a career as a mechanical engineer and has been able to glean wisdom from engineers among the crew. “It’s also helped me to learn a lot about carpentry and wiring. A number of our members are electricians,” Aidan commented.

The Sentinel office building was located at 27 N. Main St., Manheim, and a one-year subscription in the 1920s cost readers $1.50. Deemer said that Trout published local news that was “strictly Manheim,” instead of focusing on news from larger cities or following journalism trends of the times that centered in sensationalism. His choice to do so is one that Deemer believes helped Manheim to begin thriving. “Manheim in 1920 was an isolated community with mud roads,” said Deemer. With time, Trout’s efforts led to roads in Manheim being rebuilt and paved, but Deemer said that commerce was Trout’s biggest thrust. “He knew Manheim - even with better roads could not grow without commerce,” shared Deemer. “By 1928, in great part by personal effort, (Manheim) had realized over 140 businesses.” Deemer’s book covers each year of the legendary decade. At the beginning of each section, Deemer opted to give a brief nod to a major world event outside of Manheim, such as a photo of Charles A. Lindbergh and the Spirit of St. Louis aircraft for 1927. Meanwhile, the news articles from Manheim for that year include “Manheim and Lititz Turnpike to

A new six-minute video posted on Veterans Day to the MVMC’s website, https://manheimveteransmemorial.org, explores the history of military service in Manheim and describes the effort to build the memorial plaza. To achieve its goal, the MVMC plans to raise $300,000 over the next year through donations, with in-kind gifts, and by the sale of memorial bricks. The committee has already been selling bricks as plans have been finalized. “The bricks are a great way to recognize the military service of a family member or friend,” stated James Williams, chairman of the committee. “But to make our vision a reality, we require more capital. Given the historic generosity of people from this area, we know that we will be successful.” Williams, himself a retired sergeant major from the U.S. Army, added that the MVMC has contracted with a professional fundraiser to make its efforts more effective. With the start of the campaign, the MVMC is also forming an executive advisory board to help guide the efforts. The MVMC has already established partnerships with Manheim’s veterans service organizations, the American Legion Post 419 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5956 and its auxiliary. For more information, interested individuals may visit the aforementioned website or search for “Manheim Veterans Memorial” on Facebook. Chartered in 2016, the Manheim Veterans Memorial Committee is an unincorporated, 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization. All committee members are unpaid volunteers. The group’s motto is “Honor Their Service.”

Christmas Gathering Planned In Park Third Annual Tree Lighting Slated By Ann Mead Ash

This will be the third year Kellye Martin has served as coordinator of the Lititz Christmas in the Park event, a community gathering and tree lighting festivity, and the event continues to grow, attracting at least 1,000 area residents in 2018. “This is a casual, family-friendly seasonal celebration,” said Martin. “It is so quintessentially small-town Americana, like something out of a Norman Rockwell scene,” she said. The 2019 celebration will be held at Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz, on Friday, Dec. 6, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The approximately 30-minute event will include live music, carol singing, and the lighting of the town Christmas tree. The park welcome center, located near the Broad Street entrance, will be open, and Lititz ornaments and other gifts will be available for purchase. According to Martin, this year the program will move to the band shell to better accommodate the gathering. “This will make it easier for everyone to see and hear,” explained Martin. The new location

will also give organizers an opportunity to decorate around the stream with luminarias to add a warm glow to the event. As in the past, the Moravian Trombone Choir will play a prelude for attendees as they arrive and then accompany the carol sing. Martin has recruited Jeff Rinehimer to be the master of ceremonies for this year’s program. “(Rinehimer) is a long serving Lititz Park board member,” said Martin. “He is just about to complete another three-year term as president of the board. It will be a nice send-off for him to (act as master of ceremonies) this year.” Rinehimer will welcome the gathering and introduce pastor Dean Jurgen of the Lititz Moravian Church, who will give a Christmas blessing. Live music will include the Warwick High School (WHS) concert choir. Martin said that Santa and Mrs. Claus will visit from the North Pole again this year, appearing on the band shell with other presenters. After Santa arrives, Mayor Tim Snyder will make remarks and count down to the tree lighting. This year, two trees will be lit, one at the front of the park and one in the band shell. “One of the crowd favorites is always

the lighting of the community Christmas tree,” said Martin. “Our park staff does a wonderful job of trimming and decorating the tree every year. It’s grown so tall that we need a bucket truck to reach the lights and star on top now.” The Lititz Christmas in the Park event, a Once the trees are lit, volunteers will light the community tree lighting event, will be held in Lititz Springs Park on Dec. 6, beginning at crowd members’ candles for the carol sing. 6:30 p.m. Area residents are invited to gathThe event is free, but in er for caroling, to see the luminarias along the spirit of community, the spring, and to enjoy a visit from Santa. opportunities to make a goodwill offering for Lititz Springs Park will shell. Local small businesses help to keep cities and towns prosperous and humming along. Such establishments can help build a sense of community and forge lasting relationships. Small businesses are the lifeblood of many communities. In the United States, the majority of businesses in operation are classified as small businesses, according to data from the Small Business Administration. Consumers can express their appreciation for the small businesses in their communities in various ways. Here are eight ways to support local businesses: 1. Shop at small businesses regularly. 2. Use social media to give your recommendations on small businesses that go

above and beyond in quality and service. 3. Speak with business owners about your experience as a customer, sharing insight about both good and bad experiences. 4. Encourage your family or friends to make small business shopping a larger part of their overall spending plan. 5. Think of small business sponsorships when putting together school- or clubbased fundraisers. 6. If you own a small business, keep business cards, flyers, or a sign advertising another small business in the area to show mutual support. 7. Invite small business owners to community activity centers, nursing homes, schools, and the like to share their experiences about starting a business in the area. 8. Participate in community events that may be sponsored by small business owners.

“Through the Door,” an exhibit from local artist Gail Whatmore, will be on display in the North Gallery at Mulberry Art Studios during the month of December. The public is invited to meet the artist at a First Friday opening reception on Dec. 6 from 5 to 9 p.m. Mulberry Art Studios is located at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, and holds regular gallery hours on weekdays. Whatmore, a native of Lancaster County, has always had a love for the arts, which she inherited from her father, whose intricate works still hang in her family’s home. Following graduation, Whatmore pursued a career in business. However, while she was working with her own three children during their school years, she found herself drawn back to the arts. The inspiration for the “Through the Door” collection is the Christmas season. Whatmore enjoyed depicting Saint Nicholas in different eras and incorporating artists of that same time period in the scene. For more information, readers may call Mulberry Art Studios at 717-295-1949.

About a year ago, Dona Fisher, founder of Friendship Foundation and the Change of Pace Bible studies, received a Christmas card from a neighbor that featured a painting by Liz Hess. The painting captivated Fisher. “The painting ... is of all the world bowing down to the Christ child,” said Fisher, who went on to share that the card depicts people representing countries from all over the world who are dressed in the colorful clothing of their native land. The card inspired Fisher to ask Hess if

she would tell her story at an event. “(The painting was) what really stirred me to ask her,” recalled Fisher. “I was moved by that, and I picked up the phone and called her shop.” Hess agreed to be a speaker at the event that Fisher calls “A Creative and Colorful Christmas Brunch.” The meal for women, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Eden Resort Courtyard, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster, will feature a buffet meal and cookies shaped like red umbrellas to honor Hess’ use of the colorful parasol in her paintings. Hess is a well-known, award-winning Lancaster artist who began life in Honduras, Central America, as the child of missionary parents. She grew up in Lancaster, and she later became a missionary herself, serving in Lapland, Finland. Hess now has a shop in Lancaster’s Gallery Row. She travels abroad

yearly to paint on location. Fisher is especially looking forward to hearing Hess talk about the source of her imaginative work. “Artists have so much creativity that comes from their heart and their soul,” she said. “It starts somewhere within.” She looks forward to hearing Hess’ insights at the brunch. Guests will have the opportunity to hear about how Hess draws inspiration from worshipping the Master Painter, who has filled the Earth with form, color, and pattern. On the menu for the brunch will be quiche, fresh fruit, pastries, orange juice, and coffee. The idea to return the event to a brunch format for women after a time of not holding a brunch was also inspired by the holidays. “I hadn’t held a brunch in a little while, and, you know, there’s a world out there that needs peace and joy,” said Fisher. “(So I decided) to have a fun brunch with women and invite someone in that we highly respect and honor in this town.” There is a cost to attend the brunch. Reservations must be made by Wednesday, Dec. 4, by calling 717-519-5220.

Preparing to hold “A Creative and Colorful Christmas Brunch” featuring Liz Hess at the Eden Resort Courtyard on Dec. 7 are (from left) Friendship Foundation and the Change of Pace Bible studies prayer coordinator Rosie Joost, founder Dona Fisher, and director Cindy Riker.

Knowing the special bond people have with the pets in their lives makes him feel honored to create a piece for a client. Mulberry Art Studios is located at 1921 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) recognized local member contractor firms for their work performed on area construction projects during the 30th annual ABC Excellence in Construction Awards Gala. The gala was held on Nov. 6 at Spooky Nook Sports, Manheim. The top award of the evening was the Project of the Year, which was awarded to Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. and James Craft & Son Inc. for their project Frederick Street Patient Tower Overbuild. The project was selected due to its community impact, client satisfaction, design features, and positive notoriety. The project was submitted by Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. in the Healthcare Over $25 Million category and by James Craft & Son Inc. in the HVAC Over $5 Million category. The project consisted of a sixstory overbuild and expansion of Lancaster General Hospital’s existing Stauffer building, which occupies the northeast corner of the hospital’s site. Building vertically on a tight, landlocked site created several challenges. Benchmark was able to successfully coordinate steel delivery to the site to continue building while alternating with concrete delivery to pour the completed decking as the building rose. James Craft & Son Inc. was hired to perform the mechanical piping and HVAC for the vertical expansion and received many deliveries at its own warehouse to transport to the jobsite. Working in an occupied facility next to highly sensitive areas and minimizing the disruption to the hospital staff’s ability to treat patients was the highest priority. This year, the Project of the Year Award finalists also included CCS Building Group, Willow Street - Willow Valley Chapel Relocation, Lancaster (Category:

The Heritage Chorale of Lancaster has announced its Christmas 2019 concert series, “O Magnum Mysterium: We Sing the Mystery of Bethlehem!” Performances will be held at 4 p.m. on select Sundays, with the schedule including Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 308 Petersburg Road, Lititz, on Dec. 1; Zion Lutheran Church, 85 E. Brandt Blvd., Landisville, as part of the Zion Musik Concert Series, on Dec. 8; and Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 3131 Columbia Ave., Lancaster, Jan. 5, 2020. The Heritage Chorale’s artistic director, Barry L. Sawyer, has devised a program of musical meditations on the Bethlehem miracle venerated in the medieval text “O Magnum Mysterium.” With its origins deep in the Middle Ages, the text was a responsorial chant sung as part of Christmas matins - a service celebrated near the midnight hour of Christmas Eve. The Latin text describes

the Nativity scene when Christ was born and laid in a manger, where animals were witnesses to his birth. Sawyer’s program will include “O Magnum Mysterium” by Morten Lauridsen, “Silent Night” arranged by Dan Forrest, “Born in a Stable” by Philip W. J. Stopford, “Bethlehem Down” by Peter Warlock, “Hodie Christus Natus Est” by Luca Marenzio, “Whence Is That Goodly Fragrance” arranged by Mack Wilberg, “Angels’ Carol” by John Rutter, “This Christmastide” by Donald Fraser, “Jesus Springing” by Bob Chilcott, and “Carol of the Bells” by M. Leontovich and arranged by P. J. Wilhousky. The program will also feature familiar carols of the season. Tickets are not required. A freewill offering will be received, but there is no entrance fee. Based in Lancaster, the Heritage Chorale
