Showcasing A Mix Of Nostalgic And New Women’s Club Plans Tour Of Homes By Chelsea Peifer
Driving through downtown M a n heim’s historic Market Square during the holiday season has a way of evoking all the warm feelings of an oldfashioned Christmas, from the twinkly lights to the enormous tree and the decorated businesses and homes. This year, people will have the chance to see the inside of one of the stunning homes in the square, as well as five others throughout Manheim, as part of the Women’s Club of Manheim (WCM)
Holiday Tour of Homes on Sunday, Dec. 2, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The iconic Georgian Revival mansion at 2 N. Charlotte St., owned by Ben and Kami Deppen and home to Big Dream Creative Art Studio, will be one of the tour stops fully decorated for the season. The property once served as the site of Baron Henry William Stiegel’s office and storage building, but in 1910 the buildings were razed. Cigar manufacturer and men’s clothing store owner Clayton Gibble built the home, complete with eye-catching features such as twostory fluted columns, oculus windows, and a belvedere. are also available to purchase. Visitors may enter to win other train items in a silent auction and giveaway drawings. The 2018 display will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in December; from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 1, 8, and 15; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 22 and 29, in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library. The exhibit will also be open from 6 to 8 p.m. for Second Friday on Dec. 14. Private showings are available by calling 717-367-7467. Admission is by suggested donation, with all proceeds supporting the library. According to Coble, the Train Guys raise approximately $10,000 for the library each year. To see past years’ displays and previews for this year, readers may search for “The Train Guys” on YouTube. Masonic Village, which is home to the MV&E Model Railroad Club, has provided a free shuttle bus service that will transport visitors to and from
the Masonic Village Health Care Center, 1 Masonic Drive, and the Elizabethtown Public Library. The shuttle will run on a continuous loop when the MV&E train display is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 1, 8, and 15. On these days, the last shuttle back to Masonic Village will leave the library at 3:45 p.m. The MV&E display will also be open to the public from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2. Admission is by donation. Signposts on the grounds of Masonic Village provide directions to the Model Railroad Club. MV&E hosts open houses throughout the year to showcase its breathtaking miniature train display, which is home to seven operating gauges: Z, N, HO, S, G, and standard scales, as well as three-rail O scale. Plus, visitors will be wowed by O-scale trolleys running along two rails with overhead power and details including an ornate replica of the iconic Star Barn and its outbuildings. Club member Bill Fishel noted that the trains are all
operated under an automatic control system and not run by computers. The operating system was conceived by member Mel Fisher, a B&O Railroad retiree. The club celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018, and members are continually enhancing the enormous layout. Two cameras allow visitors to see bigscreen views of the trains on the move. Member Frederick Wuestner explained that one camera features an adjustable height monitor for handicapped-accessibility. “Someone with a wheelchair can enjoy it just as much as anyone else,” Wuestner pointed out. Interactive buttons - one of which will set off smoke in a control tower surrounded by fire engines have also been added to the display in the past year. For more details on the train displays, readers may visit www.etownpubliclibrary.org or www.mvemodelrrclub.com.

Barons Clinch Second Straight District Crown By Eric G. Stark `
The talented Manheim Central band should add one more number to their wonderful repertoire - the theme song to “Jaws.” Duunn, dunn… duuunnn, dun… duuuunnn, dun, dun, dun. Play the song when the Barons are on offense, because something bad is about to happen to the opposition. Cocalico experienced this first hand Friday, Nov. 23 at Manheim Township High School, as Manheim’s offense struck fast and furious and made quick work of the Eagles in a dominating 48-14 victory that clinched their second straight District Three Class 5A championship. “It feels good. It feels really good,” head coach Dave Hahn said. “I am proud of the kids, because we busted our tail for the last year to get to this point and to play a team like Cocalico. I am proud of them, and to repeat; we haven’t done that since 2004-2005 and 2003, 2004 and 2005. So to do that again, I think that’s the mark of a good team and a good program.” Manheim (13-0) will travel to Wissahickon High School Friday and face Upper Dublin (13-1) in the PIAA Class 5A semifinals in a 7 p.m. tilt. If the Barons win Friday against Upper Dublin, the District One champ, which beat West Chester Bayard Rustin 35-28, they will play for the state title Friday, Dec. 7 at HersheyPark Stadium. Just like the previous two opponents - Governor Mifflin and Cedar Cliff Cocalico defenders moved closer to the line of scrimmage, attempting to take away running back Tyler Flick and the Barons’ running game. As the Eagles moved closer to the line of scrimmage in the second quarter, …duuunn, dunn… duuunn, dun, dun, dun - one got the sense something big was about to happen. The Barons were up 7-0 and had

Manheim Central Barons - 2018 District Three Class 5A Champions the ball. First-and-10, ball on the Central 19, 2:49 left in the second quarter and Eagles were playing man coverage and played the Barons on the inside. Duuunn, dunn… Take away the run, no problem. Evan Simon threw the ball and threw it deep. The talented junior quarterback
hooked up with wide receiver Colby Wagner for an 81-yard touchdown down the left sideline. Wagner caught the ball in stride at the Cocalico 45-yard line, broke a tackle and raced into the end zone. After three plays and a punt by Cocalico, the Barons ran the ball three times, bringing the defense close to the line of scrimmage, and then MC

went to the air again - this time a 62-yard score from Simon to Wagner down the right sideline. That’s two touchdowns in less than two minutes and a 21-0 lead with 4.7 seconds until halftime. “That was huge,” Wagner said about the two quick scores before the break. “That gave us a lot of confidence. If we got outside we knew we
could beat them and Evan could just chuck it up and we’d get it. “It was just a go, a straight go down the field. I just had to beat the guy inside and then cut outside and Evan just threw a great ball. It was the same play on both TDs.” “It wasn’t so much watching film,” said Simon, who led an offensive attack that totaled 560 yards. “Colby
came over and said, ‘this is it, I’m going to beat him.’ And we took advantage of it. He’s a stud.” Manheim ended the second quarter with a flurry, scoring on its final three possessions. Simon and what he calls his “Air Raid Attack” threw for second quarter TDs of 16, 81 and 62 yards. “It just goes to show how our

offense is balanced,” said Simon, who completed 12-of-18 passes for 373 yards and five TDs. “If they load the box, we are going to air it out. If they are protecting (against) ‘the Air Raid,’ we are going to run the ball.” Central got the ball to start the second half and scored four plays into their possession. Same pattern - three runs and a passing TD. This time it was a 35-yard strike from Simon to Wagner down the right sideline. It was Simon’s fourth TD pass on four consecutive passing attempts. Wagner caught three of those TDs and finished with five catches for 218 yards. The Wagner family scored four TDs, as Colby’s twin brother, Ben, hauled-in Simon’s first TD pass and first points of the game, capping an 11-play 90-yard scoring drive with a 16-yard catch. It
was only the second pass on the drive and first completion. “The play was I run a comeback and someone else runs a go,” Ben Wagner said. “Coach Hahn told me I had to beat the man and he asked me if I could catch it and I said, yeah, and he said, ‘keep your word.’ So I hustled and kept my word.” Fullback Jack Harbach scored on an 11-yard touchdown run with 2:26 remaining in the third to make it 35-0 and put the game into a mercy rule and a running clock. Flick and Landan Moyer capped the scoring for the Barons. Flick, who owns many rushing records at Manheim and is one of the all-time best backs in a long history of great backs, had 112 yards rushing on 16 carries. Defenses have focused on stopping him, forcing Central coaches to use other players on offense.

Manheim’s Tyler Dougherty sticks a block on Cocalico’s Brock Gingrich during the Barons’ 48-14 win in last Friday’s District 3 Class 5A championship final at Manheim Township.
“Obviously, it is frustrating, but I know it is for the good of the team,” Flick said. “It opens up the passing and that gets us winning, and that’s all that matters to me, just winning as a team.” Flick, a senior, is also a standout on defense. He led a group that stymied the Cocalico offense and held Eagles’ star quarterback Noah Palm
to 66 yards rushing. Cocalico started the game with four punts (five total), a fumble and turned the ball over on downs. The Eagles finished with 237 rushing yards (most came in the fourth when the game was out of reach) and only 37 yards passing. Another key statistic: Cocalico had the ball for 12 minutes in the game and Manheim 36:00. “Our defense did a great job,” Hahn said. “Our defensive coordinator, Tom Waranavage, had a great game plan. He did an awesome job. I am proud of him. I am proud of the kids, the way they stepped up, because that is one heck of an offense they’ve got.” Moyer led Central in tackles with 10 (two solo, 8 assists). Will Rivers (three solo, six assists) and Flick (four and five) each had nine tackles. For Manheim, the district title is the 18th in program history.

Manheim’s Colby Wagner takes a pass 81 yards for a touchdown during the Barons’ 48-14 win over Cocalico in last Friday’s District Three Class 5A championship final at Manheim Township.
Flick said it feels good knowing all the hard work in the offseason paid off. Central’s nonleague games were challenging, as all four teams Susquehanna Township, Hempfield, Warwick and Wilson - all made the postseason. Yet the Barons found a way to win and remain undefeated. “This year was harder, for sure,” he said. “Our first four games, those were really tough for us, but we grinded through that. It was just hard work.” “It is a blessing,” Simon said. “This is our second time in two years. This is
awesome. I am excited and proud of all these guys, especially the seniors, how they led the way last year as juniors and this year as seniors.” Now, Colby Wagner said, they move on and look to next week. It’s on to the state playoffs. A chance to play the “Jaws” theme or “Crazy Train,” if the Barons marching band is taking requests.

SM Johns & Son Construction Adds Automotive Services to purchase the business’s first trailer, a trip that they remember as being an adventure, complete with their vehicle blowing two tires on the way. The business started with small excavation jobs. With each job, funds were saved toward building the business and adding equipment. That model continues to today, with each job helping to add to the equipment and business. Today the company has a fleet of dump trucks, pickup trucks, trailers, mini excavators, trackhoes, rollers, and more. Passersby will see crews from SM Johns & Son Construction working on sidewalks in the area, at the Amtrak station in Mount Joy, and at many other local sites. The business has completed work at Dutch Wonderland, Historic St. Mary’s Church in Lancaster, Fire Department

that. Taking something that someone might not use anymore and making it into lots of new things people can use,” Elkner remarked. Elkner compared the process of upcycling to the beloved children’s book “Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree.” In it, author Robert E. Barry tells the story of a Christmas tree that is too tall to fit in Mr. Willowby’s parlor, so he cuts off and discards the top - only for that tree to travel and get shortened again and again to be placed into the homes of families of bears, rabbits, and mice. In a similar fashion, Elkner gave the example of how people from Donegal Presbyterian - ranging in age from 9 to 87 - upcycled gently worn shirts and clothing into aprons, napkins, tote bags, and sachets that will be available to purchase at the Christmas Market. Even the buttons from the shirts were utilized for other projects. Old sheet music was transformed into holiday ornaments and decorative items. “It’s just one thing that keeps on going,” said Elkner. This year’s event is set to take

SM Johns & Son Construction, LLC, 645 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, has announced that the garage that was used to maintain its fleet and equipment has expanded to allow the business to offer auto, truck, equipment, trailer, and camper repairs to outside customers. The business has a team of three mechanics to handle inspections, repairs, and maintenance for all types of vehicles. Owner Steven M. Johns worked in excavating, paving, and sales for 13 years prior to starting SM Johns & Son Construction in 2010. Beth Johns bought the first skid loader on her own at an auction because Steve was unable to attend. Steve and his son, Cameron, bought the first truck for the business and worked for two months to repair rust and mechanics to get it road worthy. They then drove it to Baltimore

and an assortment of baked goods, preserves, and candy. Everything will be arranged in an easy-to-browse boutique style in the fellowship hall, which overlooks the Donegal springs. Elkner noted that in planning for the event, which takes place every other year, organizers aim to ensure that the bulk of the selection will be new items while still including a few favorites from past years. Christmas crackers, for instance, were a previous hit that will be back. The crackers consist of a short cardboard tube wrapped in colorful paper and twisted at both ends to use as stocking stuffers or gift toppers. Cash, checks, and credit cards will be accepted as forms of payment. All proceeds from the Christmas Market will go toward the church’s local missions fund, which is used to support efforts such as short-term housing for individuals in need, Mount Joy Food Bank, East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank, and Hands Across the Street at Columbia Presbyterian Church. Vega said that is especially amazing to see boys who start out saying that something is too hard go on to conquer the particular ride or obstacle. “ We climbed for two days (during the Extreme Challenge Ride), and when we got to mile marker zero in D.C., all the boys were saying, ‘We accomplished it!’” Vega said. “That was really neat, and I love watching the boys see things they’d probably never see unless they were off the grid.” The Garden Spot site led rides on Wednesday evenings from April through November, but Vega said the schedule for 2019 is still in the works. Individuals interested in participating at any of the sites may visit www.life cyclesteam.org to learn more. “The doors are always open,” DeRemer stated. Rides take place on a weekly basis with extra rides on Saturdays from time to time. Bicycles and helmets are provided, along with a meal. Participation is free and open to boys ages 12 to 18. Following a holiday break, Lifecycles will resume in January with its indoor program on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS), 105 Fairview Ave., Mount Joy.
As Lifecycles wrapped up its fourth year of operations, DeRemer said that thus far the organization has tracked a total of more than 77,000 miles ridden equivalent to more than three times around the planet - and over 22,000 volunteer hours and 10,000 meals served. “I’m just floored by this, and we’re already talking about year five,” shared DeRemer. In 2019, Lifecycles plans to implement a teenage bicycling safety certification for those interested. “We have been educating them but wanted to be able to give an official certification,” DeRemer explained. It will allow participants to take a test and become certified through a practicum experience. The summer Extreme Challenge Ride will cover 400 miles from Lancaster to Boston. “If you’re really ready, we’ll give you an experience you won’t forget,” said DeRemer. To inquire about volunteering at any of the locations, readers may email director@ lifecyclesteam.org or call 717-586-2511. “We always love to have new volunteers of any age and riding ability,” remarked DeRemer.

D.C., covering more than 60 miles each day and taking in beautiful scenery along the Great Allegheny Passage. A second trip later in the summer to White Sulfur Springs in Bedford was designed as more of a camping trip with daily rides, rather than a trek from one destination to another. Heavy rainfall during that week added to the normal challenges attached to camping and riding. “It rained almost every day, but we just kept reminding the boys every day that attitude is everything,” DeRemer recalled. In addition to offering two summer rides, the 2018 Lifecycles season featured the introduction of a new weekly riding site that met at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. Albert Vega, who had volunteered as a leader for the weekly rides on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Marietta and Landisville, approached DeRemer with the idea of starting another site in the eastern part of the county. “My truck was always full going up to Marietta, and I told Lee that it would be cool to expand,” Vega recalled. “He asked if I’d be willing to lead it, so I began recruiting leaders.”

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition -
By Ann Mead Ash
Clair Leaman of New Holland has conducted “Messiah” SingAlong concerts for more than 20 years. Faith Hoover, director of Adult Day Services and coordinator of the Memory Loss Support Group at Landis Homes, attends the “Messiah” Sing-Alongs. Hoover thought that if Leaman had the skills and flexibility to conduct the sing-alongs, which are performed without previous rehearsals, he might be an ideal person to conduct a concert that brings together Alzheimer’s patients who have an interest in singing. Hoover approached Leaman following a sing-along, and he agreed to conduct. The result is the “Sing for the Moment” Holiday Concert, which will be held at Landis Homes in the West Bethany Chapel, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. Admission is free, and the public is welcome to attend. Leaman said that the concert will include seven well-known Christmas carols such as “Joy to the World,” “Silent Night,” “Away in a Manger,” and “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” in addition to one popular show tune. “We will be singing … ‘My Favorite Things,’” noted Leaman, who has enlisted the handbell choir from St. Stephen Reformed Church of New Holland to participate. “The handbell choir will play three or four pieces,” said Leaman. Choir members come with their caregivers from all around the county. Leaman said that the caregivers also participate in the rehearsals, which are held on Wednesday mornings at Landis Homes. Leaman said that rehearsals begin with light refreshments and a social time prior to practicing the material. All choir members use the words to the songs, which have been printed in a
special “Sing for the Moment” choir book created for the group. “Students from Conestoga Christian School decorated the pages,” said Leaman, who added that the book includes 19 musical pieces. According to Leaman, the group includes up to four tenors, a couple of basses, and some altos. Those who know their parts sing them, but no music is provided at this point. Kim Enck, a caregiver who is a choir participant with her husband, said that the weekly rehearsals are a blessing to them. “As a spouse of one living with dementia, one can understand that this disease has so changed the dynamics of our relationship, but not the love,” she said. “(Choir rehearsals are) one activity, of only a few as his memory continues to diminish, that we both can enjoy in the moment. To me, (that) is huge.” Shelby Swartley, a social worker with Lancaster General Health Penn Medicine Alzheimer’s and Memory Care Program, said that participating in the choir can renew family connections and have positive effects on the patients. “One of the greatest benefits of the choir is the joy that it brings both persons with dementia and their family members as they sing together,” she said. “Music touches persons in ways that a lot of other experiences don’t, (so) while they may not recall the event later in the day, the positive emotional feelings from experiencing music goes with them throughout the day.” Hoover is delighted that the opportunity to take part in “Sing in the Moment” is available to people with memory loss and their care partners. “The (joyful moments) that all of us experience in singing together are moments to cherish,” she noted. Leaman is glad he agreed to conduct the choir. “I am thrilled to be able to do this,” he said. “I am learning as I am going.” Leaman is especially pleased with the effects he sees rehearsals having on the group.

Home Tour from pg 1 Additions were made to the back of the house in 1949 by J. Harvey Spahr, who also enclosed a two-story porch at the back of the main building. The Deppens are currently in the process of restoring the interior and exterior of the home while aiming to maintain its architectural integrity. Tourgoers can expect a variety of whimsical holiday decorations to reflect the heart of the creative studio and its artistic atmosphere. In addition to 2 N. Charlotte St., the 2018 tour will include the residences of Brad and Stephanie Kochenour, 626 Hamaker Road; Doug and Whitney Metzler, 2669 N. Colebrook Road; JP and Michele Perron, 210 S. Penn St.; and Matt and Laurie Olsen, 4004 Cranberry St. The Fasig House, 30 E. High St., will also be a stop on the tour. Discounted tickets for the tour are available in advance from any WCM member or at the following Manheim locations: Shaub’s Dry Cleaning, 22 S. Main St.; Longenecker’s Hardware,
127 Doe Run Road; and Divine Consign, 37 Market Square. Fullprice tickets will be available on the day of the event at any of the stops on the tour. Tour chairperson Karen Lewis noted that the tour is intended to inspire new ideas and celebrate the season, as well as to support the WCM’s various projects in Manheim. All proceeds from the home tour will be used for community projects in Manheim, such as the upcoming Secret Santa gift distribution. Each year WCM members shop for surprise Christmas gifts for children in need in the Manheim Central School District. Guidance counselors help to coordinate the effort so that families can remain anonymous, and each child fills out of a wish list with three needs and three wants. Winterfest from pg 1
Winterfest, a free event presented by Main Street Mount Joy, will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 1 along Main Street from Delta to Barbara streets. Live music and a tree lighting ceremony will be among the festivities. By Chelsea Peifer
Main Street Mount Joy (MSMJ) invites the community to its 21st annual Winterfest on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. Local vendors, churches, and organizations will be set up along Main Street from Delta to Barbara streets. The free event will feature live music, crafts, food and beverages, a children’s train ride, walking carolers, and visits with Santa Claus. The evening will culminate with a town tree lighting ceremony at 7 p.m. located off East Main Street by the town clock. Santa Claus is scheduled to visit with children and families inside the Sheetz Funeral Home, 16 E. Main St., Mount Joy, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. People may bring cameras to take photographs with Santa. Live music will be presented from 4:15 to 6:45 p.m., including performances by Fire in the Glen, a Lancaster-based trio that blends traditional Irish, Scottish, and Cape Breton styles with its own energetic and eclectic approach. Several members of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Mount Joy will stroll through town for the event as a walking choir. MSMJ executive director Dave Schell noted that the 2018 Winterfest will feature more vendors than last year. Churches and nonprofit organizations will offer information and activities as well, and food and beverages will be available to purchase.
“The purpose of the event is to kick off the holiday season in Mount Joy and to bring the community out to meet other people, businesses, and organizations in and around Mount Joy,” stated Schell. “I’d encourage everyone to come downtown, even just for a few minutes to meet some of the great organizations and businesses Mount Joy has to offer.” Several local businesses will offer later hours and discounts or specials during Winterfest. Second Chances, a thrift store located inside First Presbyterian Church at 7 Marietta Ave., Mount Joy, will be open until 7 p.m. Free hot chocolate will be provided, and gently used stuffed animals will be distributed free of charge. Second Chances will also participate in the MSMJ Winterfest coupon book, offering 25 percent off purchases and a free gift. Organizers anticipate approximately 2,500 attendees for Winterfest, and bringing pets is not recommended due to the large crowds expected. The event will be held regardless of inclement weather. Individuals interested in volunteering at Winterfest may contact Schell at 717-653-4227. Setup will begin at 1 p.m., with volunteer opportunities continuing through 9 p.m. for teardown and other tasks. To learn more about MSMJ, readers may visit www.mainstreetmountjoy.com or search for “Main Street Mount Joy” on Facebook.

Servant Stage Company will present Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” across Lancaster County, with nearly 40 performances set at local theaters, churches, retirement homes, and schools. The show’s music is directed by Johnathan Bauer and underscored by pairings of harp, cello, guitar, and penny whistle, played live at select performances by Emily Aziza and Tony Marini. First produced by Servant Stage in 2015, this original adaptation is unique in that every word is taken from Dickens’ text, bringing the holiday classic to life through the collaborative storytelling of eight performers, all playing multiple roles. Dickens’ text will be interspersed with portions of musical narration set to the tunes of classic Christmas carols with original lyrics by Jon Rider, also playing the part of
Scrooge. All performances are offered as pay-what-you-will in keeping with Servant Stage’s mission to make performances accessible to everyone in the community. The show will tour across Lancaster County through Sunday, Dec. 23, including performances at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, Dec. 2, and at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from Friday, Dec. 14, through Sunday, Dec. 23. To reserve tickets or for more information, readers may visit www.ServantStage Company.com or call 717455-0255. 2017 event, first-grade students from Lititz Elementary sang “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” just as Santa arrived at the park. Martin has asked the group to return this year to do another seasonal selection. “We have put in a request to the North Pole to have Santa and Mrs. Claus with us for this event,” said Martin, who added that exactly how the Clauses will arrive at the park will be a surprise. “After Santa arrives, Mayor Tim Snyder will make remarks and count us down to lighting our live tree,” said Martin. Once the tree is lit, Martin said that volunteers will light the crowd’s candles for a candlelight community carol sing. The caroling will be followed by cookies for attendees to enjoy. The cookies will be donated by local businesses. According to Martin, the tree was donated to the park a number of years ago by resident George Biemesderfer. “Last year, it was big enough to decorate,” said Martin, who added that the tree is shaped before it is trimmed and that a bucket truck is used to place a Moravian star at the top. “(It’s the type of) event that makes you feel a sense of community and the spirit of the season,” remarked Martin, who estimated that between 800 and 1,000 area residents attended last year based on the number of candles that were handed out. More information about the park may be found at www.lititzspringspark.org. Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within in By Chelsea Peifer
Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the
like we do now, noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people, Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday
John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 23 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Participants will follow guides to Locust Street and through a loop in the Mount Bethel Cemetery before returning to the church. To purchase tickets, interested individuals may call 717-517-2442. A specific tour time will be designated when tickets are reserved. Organizers strongly encourage people to order tickets in advance.
