The members of the program team at Ruhl’s Church are always looking for ways to connect with the community. Their brainstorming led to A Night of Christmas Fun, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown
Road, Manheim.
The evening will begin with Christmas carols and the reading of a short book telling the Christmas story. Each child who attends will be invited to decorate a premade gingerbread house, created from graham crackers. All decorations will be provided to take home a complete house.

There’s no doubt Blayre Wright is a great baker. In fact, some might say the owner of Flouretta Sweet in Manheim is scary good. So good, in fact, that she won Food Network’s “Halloween Baking Championship” on Oct. 31.
“I was over-the-moon proud,” Wright said of winning the competition that pitted her against 11 other bakers in a series of challenges. “I certainly did not walk into this experience expecting to get as far as I did, let alone win the entire competition.” Instead, Wright noted, she concentrated on doing her best. “My goal from the start was to prove to my clients, community, family, friends and myself that I was well-rounded and could do more than cakes, and I really feel like I did that.”
A 2009 graduate of Hempfield
High School, Wright grew up in Landisville but attended church at Salem United Methodist Church in Manheim for most of her childhood. She and her husband moved to Manheim in 2019. Wright also graduated from The Culinary Institute of America with a bachelor’s degree in baking and pastry arts management. Her business, Flouretta Sweet, has been open for five years. It’s named after her grandmothers - Flora and Loretta. Wright specializes in whimsically modern wedding cakes and miniature desserts, created in a private studio attached to her home. Her clientele is primarily engaged couples, and she also offers private baking lessons.
Food Network associates reached out to Wright after seeing her work on Instagram, and they invited the baker to try out for the show. Her audition included several rounds of interviews as well as the creation and presentation of dessert items.
“I was thrilled when I received the call to be on the show,” she said. Although Wright had participated in cake decorating competitions in the past, she had never been on TV, and the show was her first time competing in a multi-episode, multi-challenge competition. She said her favorite part of the show, which filmed in Tennessee over a few weeks this past spring, was meeting her castmates. “You would think that being on a competition show, people would be very cutthroat,” she remarked. “Instead, the cast was extremely supportive of each other. We became a family.” The hardest part of the competition, she said, was managing the pressure and stress. “Competing took a lot of mental stamina, both in the kitchen and offscreen too,” she stated, noting that most of the competitors also own businesses, so they had to focus for the show and make sure things were running smoothly back home.

In 2021, Gifts That Give Hope founder Jenn Knepper made a few changes in the annual celebration. First, the event returned to its original venue, and second, it moved to a Sunday so that attendees could enjoy a little shopping following church. The formula was successful, and this year, the gift fair will take place on Sunday, Dec. 11,

Barons Dominate Pioneers in District Semifinal
BY ERIC PYLES
If the old football saying, ‘offense wins games and defense wins championships’ has any truth then the version of Manheim Central football on display Friday, November 18th should be considered championship caliber. The Barons held the typically potent Lampeter-Strasburg rushing attack to a meager 34 yards, roughly 160 yards below their season average and surrendered only 225 total yards. Meanwhile, the offense collected 415 yards, 284 coming on the ground, leading to a 42-6 shellacking of the Pioneers and a 23rd appearance in a District 3 title game.
“We played well in all three facets of the game. It was all around a great effort by these guys, great team win,” was the simple way head coach David Hahn summed up his team’s 61st district playoff victory.
“I think the big thing for us defensively, we were able to stop the run...that was key to our success,” continued Hahn. “Defensively they challenged us a little bit in the secondary but I think our guys held their own, we gave up a couple of big plays but we didn’t really break.”
The only one of those big plays that did any real damage came in the third quarter when Trent Wagner hooked up with Dean Herr (eight catches - 138 yards) for L-S’s lone score, a 26 yarder that made it 21-6 after Central blocked the PAT attempt.
Of course, by the time LampeterStrasburg found the endzone, Manheim was already firmly in control and that process started on the Barons’ opening eight play, 78-yard drive. That momentum stealing drive ended with a 43yard Zac Hahn to Aaron Enterline (six catches - 81 yards) touchdown.
“Early in the first series we got things
rolling, a little bit with the run, setup play action and we kind of broke the pocket and threw that long touchdown pass,” stated coach Hahn adding, “I think we knew we could win. I think we knew it would be a three or four score game but we needed that momentum piece to kick start us and we got it early in the game and that really helped us.”
Despite momentum squarely on their side, Manheim Central was only able to post one more score in the opening half, this one a 12-yard Bryce Armold scamper, taking a 14-0 lead into intermission. Lampeter-Strasburg found the going just as difficult coming out of the halftime break with their initial
possession lasting only five plays before punting to Manheim. Central effectively iced the game with a 12 play, 75yard drive that ended with a three-yard Armold score that made it 21-0.
L-S did answer with their lone TD strike but the Barons snuffed out any budding Pioneer momentum by blocking the extra point attempt. Manheim continued their push, answering the Lampeter-Strasburg score with a nine-play, 64yard drive that ended with Armold’s third TD run of the game. This one was from 19yards out and served as an exclamation point to his 233-yard evening.
Manheim Central finished the scoring with two Jaden
Weit (eight carries - 46 yards) touchdowns, one from three yards and one from four yards. Those scores were set up by the suffocating Baron defense that held Lampeter-Strasburg to a total of two yards and seven plays over those two drives.
Hahn the quarterback finished with 131 yards and that one TD on 11 of 16 passing while Armold’s big game pushed his season tally to 2,203 yards, making him the eighth LancasterLebanon League and second Manheim Central back to hit the 2K mark.

from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.
The 2022 fair will feature 45 nonprofit organizations offering environmentally friendly and ethically sourced gifts, along with food and beverages from local eateries and food trucks. Father Christmas will be present for pictures, visits, and interactive story reading, and a number of children’s authors will be on-site.
Several organizations will be at the fair for the first time this year, including the fledgling Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence, which is starting a Lancaster chapter. The group held its first event at St. Edward’s Episcopal Church in September. At the fair, representatives hope to offer education and raise both funds and awareness. “There have been 75 gun homicides in the last 10 years in Lancaster County,” said representative Sue Heilman, who added the group hopes to influence young people with a pledge concerning firearms.
Josiah Groff started Big Picture Soccer three years ago when he and his wife were serving at an orphanage in Juarez, Mexico. “We work with local leaders in
communities in poverty,” said Groff, who now lives in Lancaster. “We give them resources and training so they are able to start soccer clubs for the youth in those communities.” According to Groff, the goal is to use soccer clubs to build character, inspire hope, and provide opportunities. Big Picture has a club in Uganda, and Groff is working to start a club in Lancaster city that will give immigrant and refugee populations opportunities to connect with the community. Attendees at the fair can help Big Picture by sponsoring teams or purchasing equipment.
When dancer Libby Shannon Miller of Lititz was killed at the age of 10 in a
car accident in February, her parents, Brooke Carlock and David Miller, knew they wanted to do something to promote dance in their daughter’s memory. “(Libby) was a competitive dancer,” said Brooke. “Dance was her life and passion.”
David agreed, recalling, “She was (at the dance studio) six days a week.” Knowing the costs of lessons, costumes, and competitions, Libby’s parents decided to raise money to provide scholarships for dance students. Live Like Libby scholarships are available for eligible students
as nominated by local dance studios. People who donate during the fair will support these scholarships.
Brooke said that the name was chosen based on chalk messages written by Libby’s fellow John R. Bonfield Elementary students. “It was perfect for her (because) she was so full of joy and life and kind to everyone,” said Brooke.

Holiday Meal Delivery Set
The 36th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 17. Once again, the holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only; there will be no pickup location.
It’s an on-air celebration of what God has done and is doing through the ministry of WJTL. You’ll hear from artists and friends from the community and beyond.
Of the challenges she faced and the creations she made on the show, Wright said her favorite was a black wedding cake she made for the finale. “Wedding cakes are my thing, and I love making spooky, moody cakes, so this was right up my alley,” she recalled.
When she’s not baking, Wright enjoys shopping, eating baked goods she didn’t have to make and playing with her cats, Poppy and Persimmon.
She also loves to take trips to Disney, adding, “I’m a huge Disney parks nerd.”
As she demonstrated on the “Halloween Baking Championship,” Wright is a natural in the kitchen. “I love that baking requires attention to detail, but can also provide an extremely freeing, creative outlet,” she said. “And you end up with a delicious treat at the end of the process … hopefully!”
Families must preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855567-5341 by Friday, Dec. 9. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 17.
The project anticipates distributing approximately 3,000 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families across Lancaster County throughout the holiday season. The main supporters of this year’s distribution are UPMC Pinnacle Health Plan, GFL Environmental Inc., Matthew 25, Stroehmann Bakeries, Giant
Foods, Pepperidge Farms, Four Seasons Produce, Keener Potatoes, and Packaging Corporation of America.
In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, LCPN will also continue its partnerships with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, The Factory Ministries, Mission Food Pantry, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas.
LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. LCPN relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. Monetary donations can be made online at www.lcpn.org. For information on donating by mail, call Tom Fasnacht at 717-569-8521. LCPN is a nonprofit group relying solely on public donations and volunteers.

Closet, a clothing giveaway.
For nearly 70 years, the Engle family has been committed to promoting positive news about the community and its businesses, schools and organizations.
Three generations later, we are proud to employ nearly 150 people throughout the community.
The community is more than just where our family works. It’s where we Live. Shop. Worship. Play. Love!
A Night of Christmas Fun is open to everyone, said Steph Heisey, who is organizing the event with Beverly Snavley. “It’s a family event,” she stated. “It’s something for families to do together. It’s bringing back old Christmas traditions and giving people the chance to spend time together at the holidays, doing something fun together.”
Ruhl’s Church regularly holds community events throughout the year, including dinners, music nights, a summer picnic and God’s Clothing
All of these events help the members of the congregation fulfill the church’s mission, said Snavely. “I think that’s what Jesus requires of us - to do for others, to help others and to share His love,” she stated. “That’s what He wants from us, and this is a way we can answer that call.”
There is no charge for A Night of Christmas Fun, but reservations are requested to ensure there are enough materials for everyone. To make a reservation, call the church office at 717-665-3400 and leave a message with the number of children and adults attending. The reservation deadline is Thursday, Dec. 1.

Creative Works To Stage Sock Puppet Show
Creative Works of Lancaster will present “Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera,” a musical sock puppet parody of the movie “Jaws,” on Friday, Dec. 9, at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., with performances at 6, 8 and 10 p.m.
On hiatus since “Sock Puppet Star Wars: The Skywalker Socka,” in December 2018, the Creative Works sock puppets will go back in the water 10 years after the premiere of “Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera” in 2012 at the Lancaster Dispensing Company.
“Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera” will include singing sharks and cardboard boats as five actor-puppeteers
wield a cast of more than 30 custom-designed, handmade sock puppets. Originally written by playwright and former Creative Works board member Erich Goldstein, the script has been newly updated and refreshed with Erich’s blessing by current board member Alexander Bannon. Musical director Joshua Schwartz from the original production will return to lead the cast’s performances of rock and pop music and Christmas carols.
Creative Works’ pay what you decide (PWYD) ticketing model guarantees that no one will be turned away due to financial limitations. Audience members are asked to reserve a ticket in advance
and pay what they think the experience was worth after the performance.
Tickets can be reserved at www.zoetropolis.com. Those who reserve a ticket will be sent a PWYD link after the performances. Tickets may also be available at the door, but reservations are encouraged.
Creative Works of Lancaster receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Learn more about Creative Works at www.creative lancaster.org.
Holiday Movie Night Planned
The classic holiday film “The Polar Express” will be shown on a large screen among the historic trains during Movie Night in Rolling Stock Hall at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, on Saturday, Dec. 10. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the movie will begin at 6:30 p.m.
In “The Polar Express,” on Christmas Eve, a steam locomotive passenger train
known as the Polar Express stops at the house of a boy who is growing skeptical about the existence of Santa Claus. The conductor says the train is traveling to the North Pole, and the boy, although reluctant at first, climbs aboard.
Each ticket includes a screening of the film, popcorn, and hot chocolate. Advance tickets are available at www.eventbrite.com. If
available, tickets will be sold at the door.
For more information, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org or call 717-687-8628. The proceeds of movie night will benefit the nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.
