Get a Warm Hug from NATURE
For the fifth consecutive year, volunteers from Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Winters Heritage House Museum have put together a funfilled, family-oriented New Year’s Eve celebration for the community. The event, Welcome 2019, is set to take place from 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31. Several new elements have been added for this year’s celebration, but the one that organizers are perhaps the most thrilled about is a professional fireworks display. The fireworks will begin immediately after the raising of a lighted star at 7 p.m. outside of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 125 E. High St., Elizabethtown. By raising the star at 7 p.m., the church is continuing a tradition that Elizabethtown Borough held for many years in conjunction with its sister town of Letterkenny, Ireland. Organizer Phil Clark explained that at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time in Elizabethtown, the clock strikes midnight for residents welcoming the new year in Letterkenny. Plus, hosting a celebration well before midnight gives local families and
anyone who would rather not stay up late an alternative option for ringing in the new year. From 3 to 6 p.m., chicken barbecue dinners will be available to purchase at the church. Meals will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, fruit, and a bottle of water. Advance tickets for the chicken dinners may be purchased at the church or by calling 717-367-2786. Homemade soup will also be for sale at the church that evening. Aside from the chicken barbecue and soup, the entire event is free. Children’s activities will be offered at the Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Museum director Nancy Landis said that hearth cooking demonstrations and samples of roast beef, chicken, gingerbread, and whipped cream will be part of the fun, along with hand-spinning demonstrations and a variety of children’s crafts. Free activities at the church will include bingo, balloon twisting, face painting, music provided by a disc jockey, and games led by a local Scout troop. Bingo prizes have been donated by parishioners and local businesses. Free hot dogs, popcorn, and hot cocoa will be available. Emergency vehicles including a fire

attendees. Clark also hopes to have additional commemorative bottles made to sell at the next Elizabethtown Fair. With four years of successful events in the books and details all lined up for this year, now organizers are simply hoping and praying for good weather. “It was bitter cold last year, but we didn’t cancel,” recalled Clark, estimating that approximately 300 people showed up. “It was surprisingly well-attended for how cold it was.” For more information, readers may call 717-367-2786 or visit www.christlutheran-etown.com. truck, a police car, and an ambulance will also be on-site for folks to tour. Organizer Vicki Yaider noted that the youth group made luminarias that will be lined up outside to provide extra lighting and ambiance. Weather permitting, a fire pit will be blazing and supplies for s’mores will be on hand. Also new for this year will be commemorative bottles of root beer available for purchase. The 22-ounce bottles will be brewed and bottled by an Elizabethtownbased brewery and will feature a commemorative “Welcome 2019” label. According to Clark, Christ Lutheran members have sold root beer floats at a stand at the Elizabethtown Fair as a fundraiser for more than a dozen years, and in recent years proceeds from that effort have helped to fund the New Year’s Eve event. Proceeds from the bottled root beer sales will help to keep future celebrations free for

Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count, with much of the legwork done by volunteers. Birders of all levels, including backyard watchers, are invited to help collect data, which may be used to study bird population trends and migration patterns and to consider conservation policy. Locally there are four opportunities to participate in the Christmas Bird Count. Attendees will be assigned to teams with
leaders who are acquainted with the birders’ geographical areas. Backyard birders should preregister to determine if their home is within the Lancaster Bird Count circle. The bird count will take place in southern Lancaster County on Sunday, Dec. 16. To preregister and for more information, readers may contact Bob Schutsky at 717548-3303 or info@birdtreks.com. Birders in the Lititz area may participate on Sunday, Dec 30. The contact person, Ted Nichols,
may be reached at 717-856-3851 or tanicholsii@gmail.com. In the Lancaster area, the bird count will take place on Saturday, Jan 5, 2019. Interested readers may call Roger Stoner at 717-393-9030. Additionally, the Christmas Bird Count for Kids will take place at the Lancaster County Central Park on Saturday, Dec 29. Held in collaboration with the Lancaster County Park System, the event is designed to teach children about birding and
volunteering as a citizen scientist. All children are required to register with the Lancaster County Parks Department by calling 717-295-2055, and all children must be accompanied by an adult. Additional information is available by contacting John Lahr at 717-284-3497 or johnlahr324@gmail.com. The members of Cross Roads Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church, 800 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, invite area residents to join them for the 21st annual Community Christmas Day Meal. People are welcome to stop in at the church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to enjoy a hot turkey dinner. All are welcome, and there is no cost to attend. Takeout options are also available. Attendees who would like to pay it forward are welcome to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the Mount Joy Food Bank. Reservations are requested, but not required. Interested individuals may sign up by calling 717653-1616 or visiting www.cross roadsbic.com/christmas-meal -sign-up preferably by Sunday, Dec. 23. Walk-ins are welcome. “We don’t ever want to turn people away, because we always end up having plenty of food,” said coordinator Joe McFarland. Meals can also be delivered upon request to area residents who are unable to leave their homes. McFarland had the idea for the annual Community Christmas Day Meal at Cross Roads at a time when free Thanksgiving meals were plentiful in the area, but Christmas Day meals were not. “I honestly felt like it was what God wanted us to do,” shared McFarland. The inaugural event was held on Christmas Eve, in case there were not enough volunteers available to serve on Christmas Day, but as it turned out there were plenty of helpers. Every year after that, the meal has been held on Christmas Day, and McFarland said helping to serve the meal has become such a popular tradition that sometimes they actually have to turn

Wrapping is sponsored by United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDSF) in support of the lives of those with physical and age-related disabilities. Gifts are wrapped for shoppers in the Sears Mall of Park City Center every hour, every day during mall open hours through Christmas. More than 500 volunteers from throughout the community are needed to cover all available shifts; a shift is typically two to four hours. Individuals age 14 and older are invited to sign up for a variety of shifts scheduled during booth hours. Church, community, civic, or school groups are welcome to sign up. To volunteer, readers may contact Lori Spradling at 740-624-1866 or lorispradling@hotmail.com. away volunteers. Church members who are not helping with setup and teardown and serving the meal are eager to make or donate food. Originally, organizers thought the meal would primarily reach people who may be struggling financially and unable to afford food, but McFarland said that more than anything the meal has served as a way for people who would otherwise be alone to enjoy fellowship and the company of one another. “People usually get here at the beginning and stay the whole time,” said McFarland. Last year, approximately 420 people enjoyed a meal from Cross Roads. “A lot of times their families live far away, and they have no place to go,” added Clare Funck, who has helped to plan and serve the annual meal for many years. “We sit at their tables and catch up, and sometimes we pray with them or ask if they have any prayer requests.” Cross Roads members also deliver meals to folks working at places like the police station, the fire department, and local convenience stores on Christmas Day all with the goal of making sure no one feels lonely or forgotten. “If you’re alone for Christmas, come here and be welcomed into the family here,” encouraged Funck. “It’s such a joy to see people being fed and enjoying themselves. It feels like you’re at home.” Pictured on front: Members of Cross Roads Brethren in Christ Church in Mount Joy, including (from left) Joe McFarland, Clare Funck, and Denise Steck, will host a free Community Christmas Day Meal on Dec. 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On Saturday, Dec. 22, the 32nd annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner distribution will take place at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ home stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The project will distribute an estimated 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to lowincome families throughout Lancaster County. The distribution will begin at 8 a.m., and no prescreening is required. In addition to the distribution, LCPN is partnering with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions and TLC Homelessness and Veterans to provide meals to families in designated areas. Hot beverages and food will be handed out to the recipients by the Lancaster County Coalition to End Homelessness. LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. More information is available by calling 717-569-8521.
Scouts Host Peace Light The Peace Light was received at an arrival ceremony on Dec. 5 at the office of the Boy Scouts of America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council, located at 630 Janet Ave., Suite B-114, Lancaster. The Peace Light will be available from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays from Dec. 6 through Friday, Dec. 21, at the council office. Attendees are encouraged to bring an oil lamp or an enclosed candle to take it with them. For more than 1,000 years, a flame has been continuously lit in the Grotto of the Nativity in
Bethlehem, Israel. As has been an annual tradition for the last 33 years, a Scout from Austria is chosen to light two blast-proof miner’s lamps from the grotto flame. The lamps are then carried by jet from Tel Aviv, Israel, to Vienna, Austria. There the Peace Light is distributed at a service of dedication to delegations from across Europe, and these delegations take the light back to their own countries, along with a message of peace. Since 2004, the miner’s lamps containing the Peace Light have
been flown from Vienna to New York City. Boy Scout leaders from the U.S. light their lanterns from the miner’s lamps in New York and spread out across the U.S. and Canada to share the Peace Light. This is the first year that the Pennsylvania Dutch Council will host the Peace Light. The Peace Light is a physical reminder of the reason for the Christmas season. The Pennsylvania Dutch Council serves nearly 5,500 youths in a variety of programs in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. For more information, readers may call 717553-4200 or visit www.peace light.org or www.padutchbsa.org.

Everyone is welcome to attend the free event. Dinner will be served family-style at tables set up in the church gymnasium. The menu will include ham, green beans, baked potatoes, applesauce, rolls, and assorted desserts. The meal will be prepared and served by members of Ruhl’s UMC. Those planning to attend are encouraged to sign up by calling the church at 717-665-3400. Organizer Seth Achey noted that reservations are not required but are strongly encouraged in order to give organizers an idea of how much food to prepare. Live Christmas music will be performed before and during the meal by the Ruhl’s UMC band, and a Gospel message will be presented at the close of the meal. Achey said that the purpose of
the event is to share the good news and love of Jesus Christ. Last year, approximately 150 people attended the meal. “The tradition started with members of the church wanting to share a Christmas meal with those in need of one and share the good news at the same time, stated Achey. “I may sound like a broken record, but that is our life’s purpose - to share Christ’s love and message with others. Ruhl’s UMC offers a traditional Sunday worship service each week at 8 a.m., with a contemporary-style service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday school classes for people of all ages take place from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. For more information about the church or the Christmas meal and program, readers may visit www.ruhlschurch.org.

way, not being on her phone helped her enter into creativity. Other students shared about how they had a greater sense of respect and appreciation for people around them as a result of disconnecting from their smartphones. A common observation among the students and staff members who took on the challenge was that they had more time due to not using their smartphones or social media accounts. The goal was not just to disconnect from technology, but to also use the time as an opportunity for students to reconnect with their communities. Focusing on how disconnection from others can eventually lead to dehumanization,

Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) students were recently challenged to go 48 hours without using their smartphones or social media accounts. Jimm and Kaylene Derksen, chapel speakers for LMS’s Commitment Week from Oct. 16 to 19, focused on the theme “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, and the Beautiful” over four different sessions. They highlighted the kinds of disconnection from God and other people that one can experience, sometimes resulting from smartphone addiction. The Derksens are both certified soul care providers and also staff members at Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM). Jimm is a personnel placement coach and Kaylene is the development director. One of EMM’s three core values is well-being. EMM seeks to improve the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being of its workers and those whom they serve around the world, as well as stakeholders. Lancaster Mennonite School students are among those whose well-being EMM seeks to enhance. Students were encouraged to fill their smartphone voids by journaling about what they noticed. One student observed a woman sitting on a bench next to her making a scarf. The student was inspired to make a scarf as a result of stopping to notice the woman next to her. In her own

Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” in” By Chelsea Peifer
Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the
like we do now,” noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people,” Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday
John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 23 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Participants will follow guides to Locust Street and through a loop in the Mount Bethel Cemetery before returning to the church. To purchase tickets, interested individuals may call 717-517-2442. A specific tour time will be designated when tickets are reserved. Organizers strongly encourage people to order tickets in advance. A limited number of tickets may be available on the night of the tours but are not

CASA Information Session Planned
FINAL DAYS!
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster County is recruiting volunteers. Community members are encouraged to support the thousands of children across the country in need of permanent families by becoming a CASA. A CASA volunteer is a trained citizen age 21 or up who is appointed by a judge to represent the best interest of a child in court. The children that CASA volunteers advocate for have been abused or neglected and placed into the foster care system. CASA volunteers work to help ensure a safe and permanent home for the child as quickly as possible. The process to become a CASA volunteer advocate is multistep and includes an interview, training and shadowing. This process equips CASA volunteer advocates to work alongside youths who are in foster care. According to the organization, older youths who are served by a CASA are more likely to set goals for their future and have clear ideas about how to achieve them and are less likely to be homeless, in trouble, or in jail. CASA will hold a Tuesday, Dec. 18, information session from noon to 1 p.m. at Paul Davis Restoration, 1816 Olde Homestead Lane, Lancaster, for its winter 2019 training class beginning in February. CASA information sessions are an hourlong introduction and overview of the role of a CASA volunteer advocate. Attending an information session is a required first step in applying to the program. The session will be free and open to the public, though reservations are required due to limited seating. To reserve a seat, readers may contact CASA at 717208-3280 or casa@casalancaster.org.
