United Way of Lancaster County will partner with Brubaker Inc. to bring back the Warm Home, Warm Hearts program after a one-year hiatus. This will be the fourth year of the program, which provides a heating system update to one family chosen through an application process. United Way of Lancaster County utilizes Warm Homes, Warm Hearts to bring awareness to fuel poverty and energy burden in the community. A household is in fuel poverty when family members struggle to afford the energy required for adequate warmth and other essential energy services. Energy burden is the ratio of income to energy costs; for some, energy costs can peak at 30% of a household’s income. Health issues arise when an individual is unable to access the appropriate

temperature in his or her home to stay warm in the coldest months. Applications must be submitted by Sunday, Dec. 31, at midnight. A committee of individuals appointed by United Way of Lancaster County’s Award Committee will review each application. The winner, along with the individual who nominated him or her, will be notified no later than Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, via the person’s preferred method of contact. Zachary Reed of Manheim was named Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Track Athlete of the Week for the week ending Dec. 10. Reed is a member of the Lebanon Valley College (LVC) men’s track and field team. Reed won the 60-meter hurdles and was the anchor on the 4x400 relay team that won at the Diplomat Open. Reed ran the 29th fastest time in Division III in the 60 hurdles as he crossed the line first in 8.43 seconds. His time is ranked third in the Mid-Atlantic Region, 12th in All-At-

lantic Region Track and Field Conference, and the fastest in the MAC this season. He was just 0.05 seconds off his career-best time of 8.38 seconds in the event. He then anchored the 4x400 meter relay team that won in 3 minutes, 33.90 seconds. The team’s converted time of 3:30.55 for track size is second in the MAC and fifth in the region. Reed, a graduate of Manheim Central High School, is pursuing a Master of Science in intelligence and security studies at LVC.
