Since 2014, Northwest EMS has been collecting toys for the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program. Working with 24 partner locations, including its EMS stations in Manheim and Elizabethtown, Northwest EMS collected toys from earlier this fall through December, when the donations were delivered to the Toys for Tots distribution warehouse.
“ We delivered more than 60 boxes,” said Lori Shenk, community outreach manager of Northwest EMS, noting that Toys for To ts will distribute the toys to

When
Jan Marie and Chris Blouch held a food drive over two days in November, they collected a ton of foodalmost literally. “We collected
1,963 pounds of food, just short of a ton,” Jan Marie said. “A ton is our goal for next year.”
The couple, which owns of Cabal’s Lair in Manheim, has been holding the food drive for seven years. Customers and community
members were encouraged to bring nonperishable items for the Manheim Central Food Pantry and the Agape Family Shelter in Lebanon, and the public responded.
“It was phenomenal,” Jan Marie recalled of the two-day event. “We
were busy with people dropping off donations from the moment we unlocked our doors until we closed up at night.” In addition to food donations, the drive collected $1,300 in cash contributions for the Agape Family Shelter.

Donegal Presbyterian Church in Mount Joy makes the perfect spot for a concert series, said church member Debra Ronning. “The church is located on a beautiful historic site,” she said. “We recently celebrated our 300th anniversary. There is a grand piano and a tracker organ. The wooden case of the organ was built from the ‘witness tree’ that stood outside the church.”
Inspired by the church’s history, Ronning created Music at Donegal.
The three-concert series will debut on Sunday, Jan. 8, at 3 p.m. and will feature duo pianists Justin Badgerow and Ronning, both faculty members at Elizabethtown College. The program will include Ravel’s “La Valse,” and Kapustin’s “Sinfonietta” as well as solo works by Chopin and Roldan.
The concert series will continue on Sunday, March 5, at 3 p.m., when Rizzetta’s Tones will entertain. The group per-
f orms Celtic and folk music with a variety of instruments, including dulcimers, whistles, flute and guitar.
The series will wrap up on Sunday, April 16, at 3 p.m., when the Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster will perform. “(They) will glorify Jesus Christ through choral singing,” Ronning stated. “They will perform a solo program as well as interact with the audience with group singing.”
Ronning plans to make Music at Donegal an annual event with a variety of concerts each year. “One will be f ocused on celebrating our Celtic heritage, another about Christian choral or instrumental music as well as a classical or chamber performance,” she said.
Founded in 1721, Donegal Presbyterian Church shares an ancestral heritage with a church in Rathneeny, Ireland. The “witness tree” that once stood on the grounds was the spot where church members met in 1777, when George Washington sent a message
asking for men to muster and travel to Philadelphia for the Revolutionary War effort. The tree had to be cut down in 1991 due to disease, but the congregation used its wood to make offering plates, bowls, bells and more, including the organ case.
All concerts are open to the public and will be held at the church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be received. For more information, contact Ronning at ronnindd20 @gmail.com or 717-413-7867.

Along with collecting food, each year’s event is a party, complete with games, giveaways and walking tacos. This year, it marked a special occasion for the Blouches - their 15th year in business.
Cabal’s Lair, named for the pet scorpion Chris had as a teenager, offers tattoos and piercings and provides an opportunity for the Blouches to display their creativity.
Chris has a background in commercial art and design, and he designs the shop’s logos, found on T-shirts and stickers for sale in the store.
Jan Marie, a former family and consumer science teacher, joined her high school sweetheart in business when they realized how well they worked together. Jan Marie points out that the shop’s name has another meaning as well. “A ‘cabal’ is a term used
to describe a group of artists and creatives,” she said, “so it really fits what we do.”
For both Chris and Jan Marie, the food drive has a personal connection. “We both came from really poor families,” Chris said, recalling his childhood in Lebanon. Jan Marie added, “As a little girl, I lived at Agape Shelter for a while when we were homeless. This is my way to give back to them.”
Chris credits Jan Marie for the fundraiser’s success. “She’s a giver,” he stated. “She loves to help people.” Along with the food drive, the couple routinely supports organizations such as Make-A-Wish and the Manheim Veterans Memorial, as well as activities at Manheim Central School District. In March, the Blouches are organizing a petsupply drive for the Humane
Society of Lebanon County in honor of a high school friend who was killed in a car accident. At the recent anniversary party, they selected a teacher to support with all cash tips collected during the month of November. “We had 50-some nominees,” Jan Marie said, noting that the winner was Lebanon School District teacher Becky Koehler. The couple also supports the Jerry Lampkin Scholarship in honor of Jan Marie’s basketball coach at
Lebanon High School.
Chris said the food drive continues to grow every year, as more and more people contribute. “The pantry staff is shocked every time by how much we’ve collected,” he said. Jan Marie said she’s not surprised by the community’s support. “How you treat people matters,” she stated.
“How you make a person feel matters. We try to keep that in mind every day, and I think people respond to that.”
Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Jan. 3, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

MLK Breakfast will be held from 7 to 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, returning to an in-person gathering at Millersville University with the addition of a livestream option. The event will be held at Marauder Courts at the Student Memorial Center on Shenks Lane. The event’s master of ceremonies will be Jeremy Jenkins from WGAL-TV. Pedro Rivera, president of Thaddeus Stevens College, is this year’s honorary event chair.
The event is a time for the community to come together, to foster relationships, to dialogue around the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., and to confront issues of inequity and injustice. This event, the center’s largest fundraiser, annually raises $100,000 - nearly one-third of the center’s yearly budget.
Marc Lamont Hill, who previously spoke at the 2018 MLK Breakfast, will present “And How Are the Children … Now?” “And how are the children?” is a traditional greeting passed amongst the Masai in Kenya. The greeting acknowledges the high value of children and their well-being, and it acts as a measure of how the community and society is faring. The goal is to always be able to answer the greeting with “All the children are well.” Hill will speak about how people can collectively work to build a better community and world, one where they can say, “All the children are well.”
A Philadelphia native, Hill is currently the host of BET News and a political contributor for CNN. He has received
numerous awards from the National Association of Black Journalists, GLAAD, and the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. He is the Steve Charles Professor of Media, Cities, and Solutions at Temple University. Prior to that, he held positions at Columbia University and Morehouse College. He is a founding board member of the nonprofit organization My5th, as well as a board member and organizer of the Philadelphia Student Union. Hill also works closely with the ACLU Drug Reform Project, focusing on drug informant policy. He received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, and he is the author or co-author of several books.
New this year, three ticket options will be available in the spirit of access and inclusion. These ticket options are an in-
person ticket, a discounted livestream ticket, and a paywhat-you-will in-person ticket.

Lancaster Band Wins Album Of The Year
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
On Oct. 22, Lancasterbased music group The Jess Zimmerman Band won the Album of the Year award at the eighth annual Josie Music Awards in Nashville. The band’s album “Breathe” garnered the award in the country rock and Southern rock category, and the band itself was also nominated for awards in four other categories: Music Video of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Fan’s Choice Award and Rock Vocalist of the Year. The Jess Zimmerman Band comprises frontwoman Jess Heitz, guitarist Joe Barszowski, bassist John Knobler and drummer Joe Mattis, and has concerts scheduled for the spring in Holtwood and Millersville.
The awards ceremony was hosted at the Grand Ole Opry, a nationally known American country music venue that has been in operation for almost a century. “I was blown away that we were nominated in five categories,” Heitz said. “To win Album of the Year in such an iconic place was
incredible.”
Each year, the Josie Music Awards recognize specifically independent artists, meaning they aren’t signed to a record label, so they handle things like recording, producing, touring and marketing themselves. Although well-traveled in the Lancaster and greater Pennsylvania country music scene, The Jess Zimmerman Band’s success as an indepen-
dent group has also taken it across the East Coast, Midwest and South.
“When it comes to ‘Breathe,’ the album itself was a monumental step for us as a band,” Heitz said. “It was also a big step for me emotionally and physically.” The Jess Zimmerman Band independently released “Breathe” in May 2021, following a flurry of

480 families through more than 50 churches, missions and shelters. She added that Toys for Tots was short toys, particularly in the 9 to 12 age group and that it needed to spend more than $57,000 to buy toys to fill that need. “In addition to the 60-plus boxes of toys Northwest EMS and our supporting partners collected, I was able to give them nearly $1,400 in checks and cash donations from the community,” Shenk stated.
Starting a Toys for Tots drive was a natural fit for the station, Shenk remarked. “One of our focuses is to be a part of our communities and to interact with our communities,” she shared. “We thought this was a great way to do that. We’re all working together to support the people in our community.” In addition to the toy drive, the station collects food for food banks in Elizabethtown and Manheim and supports Child Life teams at Penn State Health’s Children’s Hospital and Lancaster General Hospital’s pediatric unit by collecting toys, books, games and
other small items for children who are in the hospital.
For the toy drive, Shenk obtained boxes from Toys for Tots, distributed them throughout the communities served by the station and then collected the full boxes.
“I also have a traveling box that I take to public events like the Santa 5K that was held in December in Manheim or to 1st Thursdays in Manheim,” she said.
On Dec. 12, volunteers gathered at the station at 60 W. Colebrook St. in Manheim to pack the boxes of toys into ambulances and a bus from Pleasant View Communities to take to the distribution center. Shenk noted that she’s always moved by the response from the community to the toy drive, even in the face of a pandemic.
“In 2020, we weren’t sure what we’d see, but we saw the most generosity yet, and then in 2021, we exceeded all previous years again,” she said. “This year has also been very successful. The generosity in this community is overwhelming.”

recording sessions. The band members stayed in Nashville for five days, during which they recorded and mixed each of the 11 songs on the record. “It was a lot of work from start to finish. Sometimes we would be at the studio from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. working on these songs,” Heitz said. “Breathe” is The Jess Zimmerman Band’s first fulllength album.
Heitz grew up on a dairy farm in Ephrata and currently lives in Mount Joy with her husband. Her musical career began at a young age; she would perform at local fairs, talent shows, church services and school events growing up. “Everyone has a dream when it comes to music, but if I were able to go back and tell my younger self that it would be flourishing, I don’t think she’d believe me,” said Heitz.
The Jess Zimmerman Band has multiple shows in Lancaster approaching after the new year: on Friday, Jan. 13, the group will perform at Phantom Power, 121 W. Frederick St., Millersville; on Friday, Feb. 10, it will take the stage at Mickey’s Black Box, 101 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz; and on Friday, March 24, it
will perform at Southern Lancaster County Farmer-Sportsmen’s Association, 573 Hilldale Road, Holtwood. “There’s an amazing music scene in central Pennsylvania, and we hope to connect with people all over, too,” Heitz said. “Our biggest goal is to reach and impact people in whatever way we can. That’s what ‘Breathe’ was for me.”

Boxes of toys are ready to be shipped to the distribution site for Toys for Tots.
Band
It took a team of volunteers to load the Toys for Tots boxes for distribution.
Walking around the Rooster Woodshop at Masonic Villages, Jim Smith and Clarence “Brock” Brockman are like two kids in a candy store. Their excitement grows with each piece of equipment they show off. Their eyes gleam as they recall the projects they’ve completed and the ones in progress. And they are not alone. All of the 35 members of the woodshop share a passion for creativity, hands-on work and quality craftsmanship, Smith said. “We are all serious woodworkers,” he remarked. “We all take great pride in our work.”
Masonic Villages has had a
woodshop on its grounds since 1963. In 1991, the shop relocated to a renovated chicken house, and in 2016, it moved to its current 8,700-square-foot building, funded primarily by resident Robert Umbaugh. The facility features workstations for each member; various equipment, including band saws, lathes, radial arm saws, sanders and joiners; a finishing room, complete with a spray booth; and a dust-collection system that keeps the mess to a minimum.
State-of-the-art equipment includes safety features such as a SawStop, which prevents users from encountering the blade. “You can’t hurt yourself on this,” Smith said. “Well, you
can, but you’d have to be trying pretty hard. It’s nice for us old geezers.”
Each member brings his or her (currently, there is one female member) particular
interest and skill to the shop. Both Smith and Brockman enjoy cabinet and furniture making. Other members like to turn wood, while others are into scroll and fretwork. A small store at the entrance to the woodshop is open to the public and showcases items for sale, created by members. Items include bowls, clocks, gavels, games, toys, cabinets, bird houses, tables and chairs. The members will complete custom orders by request and also offer repairs.
Members of the woodshop must be residents of Masonic Villages and must go through a vetting process. “Each member has to have experience with woodworking because of the equipment we use and the potential risk and danger in operating it,” Smith explained. Currently, the group’s youngest member is in his 60s, and Brockman, at age 97, is the oldest member. When members need ideas for projects,
they often turn to Brockman, the club’s vice president, for suggestions.
Brockman said the woodshop gives him an outlet for socializing with other residents and allows him to engage his creativity. Both Brockman and Smith noted that the camaraderie of the group is a big draw for members. “We rely on each other constantly,” Smith commented. “We ask each other questions all the time. Nobody is experienced in everything.”
The woodshop is self-supporting, with members buying the wood, including sapele, cherry, oak, poplar, walnut, maple and pine. Any extra money the shop makes is donated to charities on the Masonic campus.
As for their
favorite pieces they’ve ever made, both men said they can’t pick one. “There is always something that’s better,” Smith said, noting that each project turns out nicer than the last one. “Our favorite projects are the ones we’re working on right now.”
The Rooster Woodshop is located at 1 Umbaugh Drive, Elizabethtown. The showroom is open to the public from 8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays and 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays.

Applications Sought For Designathon
Lancaster-area nonprofit organizations are invited to apply to participate in Designathon ’23. Hosted by the students at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) in downtown Lancaster, the 12-hour marathon event provides free professional-level branding and design work to local and regional nonprofits. Applications are now open for the 15th annual event, which will take place on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023.
More information and the application can be found at https://bit.ly/Design athon23. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023. Questions about applications and the process can be directed to Pam Barby
at pbarby@pcad.edu. Held by the college’s American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Student Chapter, Designathon gives students real-world experience in creating projects for clients under a tight one-day deadline. They learn that nonprofits have marketing needs in order to be successful and that strong graphic design on well-organized collateral pieces is a vital component in successful communication and marketing plans. Students also experience the value of giving back to the community. Samples of recent work include website elements, updated logos, brochures, illustrations, and event posters.
During its history at PCA&D, Designathon has helped more than 100 local nonprofit organizations and institutions revitalize their branding and community outreach. Each year,
the event’s participation attracts dozens of students, alumni, faculty, and staff, many of whom return year after year to participate in the community-centered project.
