Connecting The Generations PVHS Students Help Seniors Navigate Technology By Ann Mead Ash

Several years ago a Tel Hai Retirement Community employee wanted to find a way to bring students and seniors together. She connected with teachers at Pequea Valley High School (PVHS), and a few suggestions were tossed around before someone hit upon the idea of students offering to aid seniors with questions about technology. “They came up with the idea of tech help, because our residents find computers and email difficult,” said Judy Schweitzer, community life coordinator with Tel Hai. “(Some residents) have problems with their equipment, and they don’t have an IT department (to

turn to). They have to figure out a lot of this on their own.” Tel Hai connected with members of the PVHS technology support program called Apple Core. PVHS students who are part of Apple Core are trained to troubleshoot computer issues in a variety of devices. Now in college, Alyssa Yoder, then a PVHS sophomore, was introduced to helping the Tel Hai residents through a friend. “I would volunteer on Saturdays … and I became very comfortable working with the residents,” Alyssa explained. When her friend graduated, Alyssa took over the program, which is now in the hands of her younger sister Megan, a PVHS junior. See Technology Help pg 3

Resolve To Make A Difference In 2020 By Francine Fulton

With the arrival of the new year, many people have made resolutions to make positive changes in their lives. Representatives from local nonprofit organizations hope that people will resolve to become volunteers in 2020, giving the most valuable gift of all - the gift of time.

The Volunteer English Program (VEP) in Chester County is seeking tutors to provide weekly, one-to-one English language instruction for adult immigrants or refugees living in Chester County. A three-day, nine-hour tutor training workshop will be held at St. Francis-inthe-Fields Episcopal Church, 689 Sugartown Road, Malvern, on Thursday, Jan. 9; Monday, Jan. 13; and Tuesday, Jan. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Participants will be asked to pay a workshop fee for materials and refreshments. According to Terri Potrako, VEP executive director, tutors are asked to make a one-year commitment to the program. The Volunteer English Program (VEP) of Chester County, which offers free English language instruction to adult immigrants and refugees, recently named seven Conversation Group leaders as its 2019 Hamilton Tutors of the Year. Conversation Groups are weekly meetings held at local libraries where VEP students and community members come together to practice their English conversation skills under the guidance of the leaders. The honorees are Pierre Amy, Phoenixville Library group coleader; John Argeseanu, Phoenixville Library group leader; Pattie Littlewood, Easttown Library group leader; Jane Palestini, West Chester Library group leader; Dr. Susan Jacques Pierson, Tredyffrin Library group leader; Karen Smith, Downingtown Library group leader; and Arlene Stevenson, group leader at the Central Presbyterian Church (CPC) in Downingtown. The Hamilton Award was established in 2013 to honor VEP’s founder, June Hamilton, and recognize tutors who “go above and beyond in fully embracing the VEP mission and promoting the organization throughout the Chester County community.”

“While many of our tutors embody the spirit of this award, these seven individuals, in addition to serving as oneto-one tutors, have collectively donated nearly 500 hours of their time this past year to lead the regional Conversation Groups,” said Terri Potrako, VEP’s executive director. “Their dedication has enabled VEP to extend our engagement within the community beyond one-toone instruction.” VEP currently offers six Conversation Groups that are free and open to the public. Meeting locations and times include the following: Easttown Library, 720 First Ave., Berwyn, Wednesdays, 10 to 11 a.m.; Phoenixville Library, 183 Second Ave., Phoenixville, Saturdays, 10 to 11:30 a.m.; Tredyffrin Library, 582 Upper Gulph Road, Wayne, Wednesdays, 7:15 to 8:45 p.m.; Downingtown Library, 122 Wallace Ave., Downingtown, Tuesdays, noon to 1 p.m.; CPC, 100 W. Uwchlan Ave., Downingtown, Fridays, 10 to 11:30 a.m.; and West Chester Library, 415 N. Church St., West Chester, Wednesdays, noon to 1 p.m. Conversation Groups are open to students already enrolled in VEP’s one-on-one tutoring program during which student-tutor pairs meet three hours a week at

mutually convenient locations. Conversation Groups are also open to those who are on a waiting list to be matched with a VEP tutor, as well as those who are not currently active students. Most of the Conversation Groups attract six to eight participants each week, while the Easttown group gets up to 16 attendees. “They are meeting with people who speak several different languages; the common bond is English,” Potrako said. “The best way to learn English is to immerse yourself in the language.” Potrako reported that one student, Jenny, a recent immigrant from Colombia who is the mother of two young children, is utilizing many of VEP’s services. Jenny is a college graduate and former insurance and HR manager in her native country, but she hopes to master the English language in order to re-enter the workforce here. “Jenny is so excited to learn English that, in addition to meeting with her VEP tutor twice a week for one-to-one lessons, she also attends three different tutor-facilitated Conversation Groups every week, totaling six hours or more of weekly English

language immersion,” Potrako stated. “These groups give her the chance to converse with other new English language learners from all over the world as they practice their emerging language skills. “ For more details, including the group leaders’ contact information, readers may visit www.volunteerenglish.org and choose Students and then Conversation Group Opportunities. Pictured on front: Seven individuals were recently honored by the Volunteer English Program (VEP) of Chester County as Hamilton Tutors of the Year. Participants in the awards ceremony included (from left) Terri Potrako, VEP executive director; Terry Marran, president of the VEP board of directors; honorees Jane Palestini, John Argeseanu, Pattie Littlewood and board member Dr. Susan Jacques Pierson; and Valerie Rozek, past president of the VEP board of directors. On Nov. 16, two Apple Core members - Megan along with Bailey Henshaw - were at Tel Hai to help Judy Ewald and Dorothy Stein with their devices. Stein had a few questions concerning transferring data and deleting items to preserve storage space. “I don’t want to delete something I might need,” she stated. Stein said she uses search engines and email daily and spends some time on social media sites. She is delighted that the students are willing to help. “These high school students know everything,” she said, adding, “I couldn’t live without them.” Alyssa noted that she enjoyed getting to know the residents she helped. “The best part about volunteering at Tel Hai (was) working with the residents,” said Alyssa, who added that most of the questions she answered involved laptop, phone, tablet, or software issues. “Because this typically (did) not take all of the allotted time, I often got to hear stories about the seniors’ lives.” Over the years that Alyssa was involved with the program, she gained insight and developed characteristics from which she still benefits. “The one major takeaway I had from working with the seniors is patience,” she

said. “I went in expecting to just answer technology questions, but quickly realized there was so much more to intergenerational communication, (which) is something that can benefit everyone involved.” Schweitzer said that she advertises the Saturday morning clinics, and residents call her to set up a 15-minute to a half-hour appointment in the StoneCroft Center at Tel Hai. Students visit the campus a few times a month from October to May, depending on the needs of the seniors. She said that the seniors have responded positively to the program and that the students who help them have been mature and responsible. Alyssa found taking part in the program rewarding. “If I had the opportunity, I would love to continue doing something like this. I enjoy working with the seniors and using my talents to better the community,” she said. Tel Hai is located 3 miles east of Route 10 off Beaver Dam Road in Honey Brook. On Nov. 20, the Berks County Public Libraries board of directors approved an update to the system-wide borrowing policy that will expand free borrowing privileges to all Pennsylvania residents. The new policy applies to all 19 system member libraries and will go into effect on Wednesday, Jan. 1. Local member libraries include the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro and the Village Library of Morgantown. The change in policy serves as an extension of the Statewide Library Card Program, which was developed during 1985 and 1986 to increase the availability of library materials for Pennsylvanians. This program’s guidelines limit eligibility for free statewide access to residents living in a municipality that supports a state-aided library. Residents in communities that do not support state-aided libraries are able to register for a library card by paying an annual fee. Amy Resh, administrator of the Berks County Public Libraries System, said the new program builds on the Statewide Library Card Program, but goes further. Under the new borrowing policy, member libraries will issue two card types based on where users live, work, or learn. All Berks County residents and those who work or learn in Berks County will continue to use their current card and have access to all materials and services available from their home library. Out-of-county Pennsylvania residents who do not work or go to school in Berks County can register for a free, limited-service card which allows users to borrow physical materials from any Berks County Public Library. More information about the changes is available online at www.berkslibraries.org/changes -to-the-borrowing-policy.

But that driving time, plus all of the unseen effort leading up to it, is more than worth it for Tracy and her husband, Ryan Zimmerman, who hope to develop and instill a lifelong hard work ethic in their sons through projects like this. “It teaches them responsibility,” noted Ryan. “And commitment and follow-through,” added Tracy. Ryan and Tracy met in FFA when they were attending Manheim Central High School (MCHS). Now Tyler and Eric are involved in FFA at MCHS, and all three boys participate in 4-H. The brothers wake up early every morning to feed and tend to their animals and return in the evening to make sure each animal has fresh water and food. Eric explained that exercising the animals is another important part of the routine to build muscle and to prepare for the main event. “That way they aren’t as anxious in the show,” noted Eric. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season may be over for many, but for Manheim brothers Tyler, Eric, and Drew Zimmerman and hundreds of other people across the state, life is about to kick into full speed as they make final preparations for their part in the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show. The 104th annual Pennsylvania Farm Show is scheduled to take place from Saturday through Saturday, Jan. 4 to 11, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. Admission is free; however, there is a parking fee in all Farm Show Complex-operated lots. Among the more than 6,000 animals that will be part of this year’s Farm Show are several lambs, pigs, and rabbits that have been raised and cared for by the Zimmerman brothers at the family’s farmette in rural Manheim. Tyler, 16, and Eric, 15 - now in their sixth and fifth years, respectively, participating in the statewide competition - will each be entering one lamb and one pig. Ten-yearold Drew will enter a lamb and a pig, along with three rabbits. Transporting all of those animals to the Farm Show Complex in time for their competitions will take three trips. “It’s going to be

- 1/3 cup Golden Barrel Light Corn Syrup - 1 tsp. salt - 1 tbsp. butter, softened - coarse sea salt for topping

Line an 8x8" pan with aluminum foil that overextends the pan on all sides (to lift out for easy removal). Lightly grease foil with butter. Combine cream, sugars, and light corn syrup in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly with wooden spoon until sugars are melted and mixture starts to boil. Stop stirring. Attach a candy thermometer to rim of pan making sure the bottom of the thermometer doesn't touch the bottom of pan. Let mixture boil until temperature reaches 245 degrees F (it'll take time so be patient!) As soon as it reaches 245 degrees, remove from heat and add in salt and butter. Stir until butter melts. Pour hot mixture into prepared pan and sprinkle coarse salt over top. Let set uncovered on counter for 4 hours or overnight. Once set, remove caramel from pan by lifting the foil. Remove foil and cut into rectangles or squares. Wrap individually in wax paper wrappers. Store at room temperature.
