Elverson resident Myrna Duplessie recently received her KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) award during a meeting of the Morgantown chapter of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), which meets on Tuesdays at 9:15 a.m. at The Torch Community Center in Morgantown. The award is presented to chapter members who reach their weight loss goal as designated by their physicians. Duplessie was presented with a sash, a pin and yellow roses, and she will also receive a certificate from TOPS International.
Chapter leader Sally Kieffer explained that TOPS is a weightloss support group. Participants are not asked to buy special food or other diet-related products. Rather, they are encouraged to choose foods they enjoy in moderation and to substitute high-calorie foods with other options.
The local group has been meeting for at least 30 years, including 10 years in Morgantown. Prior to that, the chapter met in Elverson and
West Nantmeal. “We have (members ranging) from an 18-year-old to an 85-year-old,” said Kieffer, noting that the group is open to both men and women. “It’s exciting to watch people get healthy.”
TOPS is designed for people of all ages who want to receive help and support to meet their weight loss goals. Each meeting begins with a private weigh-in from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m., followed by a health-related program.
“You only have to say if you gained or lost (weight) - not how much,” Kieffer said. “We (then) have a program that gives information - about nutrition, exercise or about an eating habit. Some people will meet for coffee afterwards; others meet to walk or exercise after the group meeting.”
TOPS also offers incentives. “We have a contest that encourages people to keep their weight off,” Sally Kieffer explained, noting that those who lose weight may be entered into a drawing to win a small monetary prize.
In addition to meetings, the chapter hosts a summer picnic and
a Christmas party.
Those interested in joining the group may attend one meeting for free. “They can come check us out, and after that one meeting, they can decide if they want to join or not,” Kieffer explained. “There is an annual fee to join set by TOPS International. There is a monthly magazine that comes with that membership. There is also a weekly due of $1.”
She added that many people considering weight loss as a goal for the new year are encouraged to give the group a try. “We had two new people join at our meeting (on Dec. 27),” Kieffer noted.
Even though they have reached their goal, it is recommended that KOPS award winners continue to attend meetings. “You are encouraged to stay on indefinitely,” said Kieffer. “They provide encouragement to the others trying to get to their goal.”
The Torch, 2846 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown, is located in the Clock Tower Plaza behind Burger King. For more information about the program, visit www.tops.org.

As 2023 begins and people make New Year’s resolutions, area nonprofit organizations hope that local residents will resolve to donate their time and talent as a way to make a positive difference in the community.
Compeer Chester County, a nonprofit organization that pairs people living with mental health challenges with volunteer friends from the community, is in need of volunteers. Participants are asked to meet with their friends for four hours each month for at least one year. See Volunteering pg 4

As the new year begins, it is a good opportunity to reflect one last time on 2022, a year that featured positive news stories that filled the pages of the Community Courier newspaper.
Local pet rescues were highlighted in 2022, specifically those with inspirational stories. Readers learned about a little kitten named Drizzle, who was dumped in the trash and found by a good samaritan who turned him over to Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue (LDAR).

Commissioners Present Ag Awards
The Chester County commissioners and the Chester County Agricultural Development Council (Ag Council) recently presented two annual agriculture awards.
The recipient of the Chester County Farmer of the Year award was Jamie Hicks, owneroperator of Hicks IV, a crop farming business on over 5,000 leased acres in Chester County and the surrounding region.
Hicks also farms land for highprofile organizations, including Longwood Gardens and land trusts. His customers range from equestrians with a few horses to large-scale dairies.
Hicks is known in the agriculture community for his entrepreneurial drive, sustainable farming practices, and innovative partnerships with research institutions such as Stroud Water Research Center.
Hicks sees promise in farmers driving agribusiness, the intersection of agriculture and business - from production and processing to distribution. He believes the way forward is with new markets and product opportunities and partnering with nontraditional customers interested in environmentally friendly packaging materials, like online retailers.
According to Hicks, Chester County is a great place to farm because of the easy access to ports and large consumer markets, including New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. Hicks also noted that his business is geographically close to some of its clients, and the local area’s mushroom industry provides

The Fund For Women And Girls Awards Impact Grants
The Fund for Women and Girls has awarded $20,500 in grants to three nonprofit organizations serving the needs of women and girls throughout Chester County. Recipients include Black Women of Chester County in Action (BWCCA), Orion Communities and The Alliance for Health Equity.
For the fourth year in a row, the fund awarded “Moving Her Forward” Impact Grants; this grantmaking program was established to focus on swift responses to pressing needs in the community. Impact Grants are intended to support systems-level changes and leverage impact through collaborative funding with other foundations/donors. The needs identified in the fund’s 2022 “Blueprint Report: Lighting a Path,” its fourth comprehensive research report on the state of women and girls in Chester County, are the focus of Impact Grant awards.
BWCCA received $3,000 to conduct its “Baker’s Dozen Listening Tour: Dessert for the Body and Soul,” a series of wellness programs for women of color (WOC) in Chester County. The series, led by a trained Black therapist and professional baker, will bring WOC together for baking sessions and discussions of mental and physical wellness, gathering data on the needs of WOC in Chester County for future strategic program planning.
The fund awarded $10,000 to Orion Communities, supporting the cost of one 16-week
“Gettin’ Ahead in a Just Gettin’ By World” program. The series provides life skills and resiliency training primarily to underserved women, preparing them with language to advocate for themselves in the larger world and improve their economic and health outcomes. The fund joined with other partners to provide Orion with a total of $22,500 to complete a match challenge to fully fund the program this year.
The Alliance for Health Equity was awarded $7,500 to support the second cohort of its Nonprofit Justice and Equity Institute. Founded in 2021, the institute provides a cohortbased series of seven workshops targeted at the nonprofit sector to self-assess and become socially responsible for unintentional inequitable practices, programs and processes within their organization’s culture. The Alliance for Health Equity will use Cohort 2, comprised of Chester
County nonprofit service providers, as a model for developing curricula for implementation beyond Chester County.
Since 2020, the fund has awarded $116,000 in Impact Grants for 21 projects throughout Chester County. More Impact Grants will be awarded throughout the new year as time-sensitive priorities arise. Last year’s recipients included: Community Warehouse Project, Chester County Food Bank, Domestic Violence Center of Chester County and ChesPenn Health Services. Last fiscal year, the fund awarded $239,680 in grants to 30 nonprofit organizations. See a full list of last year’s grantees at www.thefundcc.org.
To date, the fund has directed more than $4 million to 86 nonprofit organizations to strategically address persisting needs, including homelessness, domestic violence and women’s health.
ERAP Eligibility Guidelines Updated
On Dec. 12, Chester County’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) released new eligibility guidelines to support individuals and families facing court-ordered eviction, a utility shutoff, or a need for security deposits to secure permanent affordable housing. Since the start of ERAP, Chester County has allocated more than $30.5 million for nearly 3,000 households in need of emergency rental and utility assistance, with $13 million remaining to support individuals and families who meet the new guidelines.
Chester County’s ERAP program was introduced in January 2021, funded by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, to help cover emergency rental and utility bills for those who were severely impacted by the pandemic. Chester County’s Department of Community Development partners with four organizations - Human Services Inc., Friends Association, Brandywine Valley Active Aging, and Oxford Area Neighborhood Services - to administer and allocate the local funds.
To access Chester County’s ERAP, call 211 or 866-964-7922 and follow prompts 2, 2 and 2; text your zip code to 898-211; email info@211sepa.org; or speak with an agent at https://211sepa.org.
Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. “We need both male and female volunteers from (all) areas of the county,” noted Donna Kueny, program manager. She noted that the pairs can share activities such as meeting for lunch or coffee.
To learn more, contact Kueny at 610-436-4445 or dkueny@mhphope.org. More information, including a volunteer application, is also available at www.compeer chesco.org.
Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue (LDAR) is also in need of volunteers. LDAR is a fosterbased rescue, but it also has a property where dogs are temporarily housed until they find their forever homes. In addition, some cats rescued by the organization but not in foster care can be adopted from Petco, located in the Bradford Plaza, 680 Downingtown Pike, West Chester.
“(We need volunteers to help with) walking dogs at the kennel in Avondale and assisting with the cats at Petco,” said Mary Bauer, LDAR founder. “We are also always looking for fosters for cats and dogs.”
For details and to complete a volunteer application, visit www.luckydawganimal rescue.com/volunteer.
The Volunteer English Program (VEP) in Chester County is seeking tutors to provide weekly, one-to-one English language instruction for adult immigrants or refugees living in Chester County. Prospective tutors
are invited to attend a virtual tutor training workshop on Tuesday, Jan. 24; Thursday, Jan. 26; and Tuesday, Jan. 31, from 9 to 11 a.m. each morning.
Complete details are available at www.volunteer english.org/tutors/tutor -training-workshop.
Tutors are asked to make a one-year commitment to the program. Tutors and students may meet virtually or in person at libraries or local coffee shops. A teaching background or knowledge of another language is not necessary to become a tutor.
For more information, visit www.volunteerenglish.org or www.facebook.com/ VolunteerEng or call Terri Potrako, VEP executive director, at 610-918-8222.
Another agency seeking volunteer tutors to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills is the Adult Tutoring Program of Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC). No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a bachelor’s degree.
Tutors are asked to meet with a student for three hours a week, which typically takes place in two 90minute sessions. Tutors and students have the option of meeting in person or virtually. OIC provides online training through the Pennsylvania Department of Education and offers monthly workshops for tutors.
For more information, contact Debbie Rikess, adult tutoring program coordinator, at drikess@cc-oic.org or 610344-4013 or 610-344-4014.

Hicks recommends that new farmers look at least 10 years into the future and anticipate how agricultural products can best serve emerging business trends. Working with more experienced farmers first is also crucial, he said.
Hicks was nominated for the Farmer of the Year Award by the Chester County Agricultural Development Council. This year’s Duncan Allison Award for Distinguished Service to Agriculture went to the Baily family of Baily’s Dairy of Pocopson Meadow Farm in West Chester. Three generations of the family operate Baily’s Dairy, including patriarch Bernard Baily; daughter Becky Baily and her husband, Eric Cockroft; and daughter Meredith Parsons and her son Tyler Parsons.
The family was recognized for positively promoting local agriculture and serving as community ambassadors on the industry’s behalf. The Bailys have played an integral role in hosting the
Chester Valley Dairy 4-H club and leasing cows to young club members who would not otherwise be able to participate. The family is also deeply involved in helping to host the livestock portions of several area county fairs and festivals, which are often the first time children meet farmers and see livestock up close. Meredith, who oversees school field trips to the farm, said she especially loves working with the younger children because
they may have read about farm animals but may never have seen them in person. The pandemic provided even more opportunities for the Baily family to make a difference, especially when its Chester Valley Dairy 4-H club members brought special bovine visitors to nearby Pocopson Home residents in the summer of 2020.
To learn more about Chester County’s agriculture industry, visit www.chesco farming.org.
LDAR volunteers cared for Drizzle, who weighed only 2.5 ounces when he was found, which included feeding him by hand every four hours for several weeks. Today, Drizzle has found a permanent, loving home and is thriving with his new owners.
A new animal welfare organization highlighted in 2022 was Callie’s Critter Rescue, founded by Twin Valley High School alumna Calla Gibson. The goal of the rescue is to provide foster care for unwanted cats and kittens until their forever homes can be found. Calla is currently a veterinary technician but plans to attend school to become a veterinarian.
People who were highlighted in 2022 included Callie King of Honey Brook, a trainer and riding instructor who took part in the Mongol Derby, dubbed the longest and toughest horse race in the world. The event took riders through the grasslands of Mongolia for a distance of approximately 621 miles over the course of 10 days. Even though it was her first time competing, King finished in fourth place.
Community service organizations highlighted in 2022 included the Summerfield Handstitchers, a group of sewing enthusiasts who are residents of Summerfield at Elverson, a local housing development. The group makes fleece blankets for Project Linus, creates prayer shawls for people who are sick and crafts hats, lap covers and small pillows for residents of the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Other community groups that were active in 2022 included Mission Trip Birdsboro and Beyond, a group of volunteers that completed home repair projects for community residents in need in the summer of 2022; the American Legion Riders from Post 626 in Birdsboro, who constructed an access ramp for a combat-wounded Vietnam veteran; and Anchored Ministries, an Elverson-based organization that offered a free prom boutique for Twin Valley High School students.
Morgantown ReUzit, which offers new and gently used merchandise for shoppers, celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022. Proceeds from items sold at the shop, which includes housewares, clothing, toys, books, fabric and more, are donated to Mennonite Central Committee, a Christian relief organization.
The historic Pine Swamp Church, located at 400 Pine Swamp Road, Elverson, reopened in 2022 under the direction of new pastor David Yamarick. The church features its original curved pews and
domed stained-glass windows, as well as 16 original horse stalls outside, which were once used by congregation members who traveled to the church by horse and buggy. Sunday services are held at the church at 10:30 a.m.
