OJR student installs book-sharing box BY FRANCINE FULTON

A campus book-sharing box has been established at Owen J. Roberts (OJR) High School thanks to the efforts of student Aleksandra Shapovalov, who completed the library as part of

her OJR Middle School Gifted Project. Aleksandra, the daughter of Igor and Tanya Shapovalov, is now a freshman at OJR High School. She built the library with the help of her father, and the box was installed by the OJR See Book-sharing box pg 4

Twin Valley cheerleaders headed to national competition BY FRANCINE FULTON

“They are a good group of girls; they have a really good bond.” The girls on the squad represent all TVHS grade levels, nine to 12, and most also cheer for the TVHS basketball and football teams as well. Head coach Jess Hoffman explained that Game Day is a

traditional event that represents what cheerleaders do on the sidelines of games to encourage the crowd. At nationals, the cheerleaders will perform one three-minute routine. “They do a chant and a cheer, and it ends with a fight song. It’s a crowd leading (category),” explained Hoffman, who is assisted by coach Jamie Payne. “It’s very high energy.” After a short break for the holidays, the girls are back practicing and cheering at games. “We are at it five days a week, plus (the girls cheer at) varsity girls’ and boys’ basketball games and (there will be) three additional competitions we will do locally. They will be very busy,” said Hoffman. The girls are also fundraising in order to finance the cost of

Give it to the goats Local farm seeks Christmas tree donations BY FRANCINE FULTON

Instead of throwing out that live Christmas tree after the holidays, consider giving it to a group of goats. Alyssa Palma invites people with trees to bring them to t h e B u l l t o w n B e n d Fa r m , 497 Bulltown Road, Elverson, where they will be eaten by the farm’s three goats, Mary, Jane and June. Palma asks that residents place their trees along the fence line of the farm so as to not block the driveway.

“If people are strong enough and want to hoist (the tree) over the fence, they can do that,” Palma said. “If the goats and chickens see you at the front fence, they will come to say hello.” Palma made a similar request after Halloween, asking the community for donations of pumpkins. “The little kids liked to chuck the pumpkins over the fence and watch the animals eat them,” she said, noting that pumpkins and gourds are still accepted at the farm to feed the animals. embers of the Twin Valley High School ( T VHS) cheerleading squad have earned a bid to compete at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) National High School Cheerleading Championship to be held in February at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando. To qualify for nationals, the team participated in the UCA Regionals, where it competed in the Small Game Day Non-Tumble Division. Competing against seven teams, the cheerleaders from TVHS placed second at the event and received the highest score of their competition season so far. “They competed in regionals in Wilkes-Barre in December, and they had to place first, second or

third in order to be eligible for a bid to go to Florida,” explained cheer mom Amanda Dominguez. “They placed second and were offered the bid to compete with all different girls from across the country at nationals.”

Goats from pg 1 Any type of Christmas tree will be accepted, including white pine, Scotch pine, blue spruce, Fraser fir and Douglas fir. It is recommended that donated trees were fresh cut or purchased from local farms or small local businesses since some larger box stores spray their trees with chemicals such as colorants or fire retardants. People are asked to be sure that all ornaments and tinsel are removed before donating the trees. “They can do their best to clean (off the tree). I will (remove) any remaining tinsel,” Palma noted. She said that with the absence of grass and weeds, the goats enjoy munching on the Christmas trees as a supplement to their diet. “Pine is like a natural parasite preventative, and it adds forage to a goat’s diet,” Palma explained. “Goats rely on eating a varied diet. They are not like horses who eat grass and hay. They need to eat weeds and twigs.” Palma said that the farm is also home to turkeys and chickens and that the chickens also enjoy nibbling or playing with pine

needles and branches. “The chickens will play (with the trees). They won’t eat them, but they will peck at them,” she said. Those unable to bring their trees to Elverson may consider other recycling options. For example, people may place their trees in the yard, where they can be used as a shelter for birds as well as an outdoor feeding station. Homeowners may hang bird feeders, apple or orange slices, suet cakes and strings of popcorn from the tree as well as pine cones covered in peanut butter and then rolled in birdseed.

accommodations and entry fees needed to compete at nationals. During select home basketball games, the team is running its own concession stand. It has also planned a spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Monday, Jan. 15, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Sleepy Hollow Athletic Club, 482 Westley Road, Mohnton. The dinner will include spaghetti and meatballs, salad and bread. Takeouts will be available, and diners may purchase beverages and dessert. “The girls will be serving,” said Hoffman, noting that there will also be an opportunity for attendees to win gift baskets. Hoffman said that the girls have high hopes for the upcoming competition, noting that while two of the 12 girls on the squad

have taken part in nationals before, this is the first time these particular cheerleaders will compete together as a team. Additionally, this is Hoffman and Payne’s first year coaching at TVHS. “(At nationals) we have prelims on Friday and semifinals on Saturday and then the finals. Our goals is finals,” said Hoffman. “We are confident in them.” “They are a good group of girls; they have a really good bond,” added Dominguez. “They are good friends on and off the floor.” To learn more about the squad and to donate, visit www.schoolfundr .org/fund/tvhscheer. More information is also available by searching for “Twin Valley HS Cheerleading” on Facebook.

The Chester County 4-H program is looking for several volunteers to help engage youths in STEM education with an emphasis on robotics, computer sciences and engineering design. Volunteers would work directly with youths on short term projects or in ongoing 4-H clubs. Volunteer training is provided. Chester County 4-H has established robotics clubs across the county that provide fun, hands-on learning opportunities for youths ages 8 to 18. To find out more about the opportunities available, contact Toni Stuetz, Extension 4-H educator, at tmm113@psu. edu or 610-696-3500. Administered in Penn-

High School horticulture class last fall. OJR students are now free to take books from the box or donate ones that they have already read. The book-sharing box is located near the campus greenhouse and next to the gazebo, providing a place for students to read outdoors when the weather turns warmer. “I felt like this was a really good spot. It is a calm and relaxing area, and I thought it would be a good place to put the books,” Aleksandra said. She noted that Mary-Rita Bonner, the gifted mentor teacher for the project, received permission from the school to install the box and that Bonner donated some books to help get the library started.
