Rock Hollow Woods Environmental Learning Center, a nonprofit organization that offers nature programs and summer camps for youths, recently announced that it has acquired 45 acres of land adjacent to its existing 32 acres on Rock Hollow Road in Robeson Township. The purchase was made possible through a donation from The Boomerang Fund of the Berks County Community Foundation. The additional acreage will allow the learning center to expand its educational programs and ensure conservation of the property. The executive director of Rock Hollow Woods is Jean McCarney, who retired in June 2016 from teaching at the Robeson Elementary Center (REC). She explained that the land was purchased through the trust established by the late Ephraim See Learning Center pg 2

Therapy Dog Provides Hope And Comfort By Francine Fulton

Members of the Brandywine Base Ball Club of West Chester are actively recruiting players, umpires, scorekeepers and spectators for the upcoming season. The club plays the game according to 1864 rules. By Francine Fulton

The Brandywine Base Ball Club of West Chester is currently seeking players for its upcoming season. The team, which formed in 2013, portrays the game of “base ball” as it was played (and spelled) in 1864 by competing

with other vintage clubs in the Mid Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League. An informational meeting about the Brandywine Base Ball Club, which is a nonprofit organization, will be held on Sunday, Jan. 19, beginning at noon at Levante Brewing Company, 208 Carter Drive, West Chester. When Lara Dushkewich and her husband, Tom, rescued Freddie, a boxer/beagle mix, from a North Carolina shelter, she never expected that Freddie would become a therapy dog bringing hope and comfort to senior citizens and to victims of domestic violence. Lara learned about Freddie’s natural calming tendencies while visiting her grandmother in a nursing home. “The first week I had him when he was about a year old, I brought him to see my grandmother, who was recovering from an illness at the nursing home,” Lara recalled. “He walked right in and had an instant connection with my grandmother. My grandmother went through the various stages of ability - (using a) cane, a walker, a wheelchair and then (becoming) bedridden. Through all of that, he was gentle and he didn’t need treats to get him to sit and stay. He See Therapy Dog pg 3

Malickson, a local Christmas tree farmer. “It’s 45 acres (in total), and 15 acres is across the street,” explained McCarney. “It includes woods, swampy areas, a creek and some open space. We will (now) be able to spread out our programming and run some programs simultaneously. There is a stone house and stone barn on the property that need renovations. We can’t use them yet, but the possibilities are limitless.” Part of the nature center is the McCarneys’ homestead, and additional acreage was purchased from the McCarneys’ neighbors, Charmonye and Curtis Jones. McCarney at one time brought her REC classes to the Joneses’ property for stream study, nature walks and journaling. “The Joneses lived (on the farm), and (it was purchased) in 1999 with the intention of having a camp for children, and they would have lifetime tenancy,” McCarney explained. Both Curtis and Charmonye have since passed away. Rock Hollow Woods offers a variety of programs for children, allowing them to enjoy activities such as walking through the woods, exploring streams, learning about nature photography and discovering flowers, trees and wildlife. Upcoming programs this spring will include an Animal Extravaganza and a Turtle Talk and Habitat Hike. Summer programs will include Wildlife CSI, Explore and Discover and Little Wonders STEAM. The facility is also open for Boy and Girl Scout programs and school field trips. One of the attractions of the site is an outdoor learning pavilion fashioned from an old barn. Much of the work was completed by McCarney’s husband, Jim. She explained that the barn was dismantled,

moved to the location and rebuilt, and new stonework was added. The structure contains a working fireplace built of sandstone native to the area. “We do programs throughout the year, (but) summer is the time we are the most busy,” McCarney noted. Currently, the site offers a weekly Homeschool Happenings program. The program, which includes journaling and time for free play, will resume meeting on Tuesdays, Jan. 21 to Feb. 11, from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. McCarney added that having additional land will provide children with even more places to explore and discover. “Getting children outside is very important. Our present programs allow children to explore, discover and grow in a beautiful environment. They learn without even realizing it because they’re having so much fun,” said McCarney. “This new land will give us the opportunity to expand what we are doing and take our programs to the next level.” Rock Hollow Woods Environmental Learning Center is located at 615 Rock Hollow Road, Birdsboro. To learn more and view a calendar of programming, readers may visit www.rockhollow woods.org. More information is also available by searching for “Rock Hollow Woods Environmental Learning Center” on Facebook and emailing McCarney at jean@rockhollowwoods.org.

Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) recently revamped its General Educational Development (GED) program and welcomes new students to take part in GED prep classes. Both daytime and evening classes are offered. Additionally, the Exton location of Chester County OIC hired two new teachers in August - Dr. Steven Kincaid and Kristie Anderson - to head the GED program. Kincaid and Anderson both have extensive career experience in the private sector and have significant math skills that benefit students preparing for the GED math exam. Both are also experienced GED instructors. “The GED is a high school equivalency degree,” Kincaid explained. “In 2014, GED was sold to the private sector. The GED now has several other companies that provide high school certificates. We have two authorized in the state of Pennsylvania GED and the High School Equivalency Test (HiSet). The HiSet exam is put out by the same people (who administer) the SAT.” Kincaid announced that the GED program in Exton has already had an exciting success to report. Recently, a student in the program achieved the first perfect score on a portion of the GED exam ever recorded in the history of Chester County OIC. The student did not miss a single question in the science portion of the GED science test. “There are four parts to the GED social studies, English/language arts, science and math,” Kincaid said. “All of her other test (scores) were also extremely high. She missed a perfect score on the math section by only two questions. She was here (for classes) for about two and half months, and we were just so pleased and excited about her performance.” See GED Classes pg 3

GED Classes from pg 2 Additional programming has been added for GED students. OIC now offers distance learning instruction to benefit students who cannot attend regular classroom sessions or who have an interest in supplementing their classroom instruction. The Exton program also offers new on-site assessment capabilities that allow students to keep track of their academic progress through periodic testing. In addition, students have access to “ready” tests that alert them as soon as they have progressed to the point that they are likely to pass the GED test. When students have passed the GED exam, OIC offers employment counseling through its partner CareerLink, which is located at the same facility where the students attend class. Experienced employment counselors advise students about area job opportunities and work with them on resume preparation and interviewing skills. Kincaid noted that GED students range in age and come from various backgrounds. “Older people who have been (living) without a GED make up about 10% of our clientele. Within the past four or five years, many students have dropped out to work because of family problems. They make up 40 to 50%,” he noted. “The biggest and fastest growing number of our (students) are legal immigrants from other counties who have a high school diploma or even an advanced degree from their home country that America does not recognize. Even if they have master’s degree (in their home country), they have to start over again here.” A graduation ceremony is held each June for all the students who passed the GED test that year. “We play ‘Pomp and Circumstance,’ and they wear caps and gowns and they get a diploma,” Kincaid said. In addition to GED classes, the OIC offers English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, workforce reintegration counseling, a CNA nurse aide training program and SOAR (Skills, Opportunities, Achievement, Responsibility), a workforce development program for those who have been involved in the criminal justice system. GED classes are held at 479 Thomas Jones Way, Suite 500, in Exton. Classes are free. For more information or to register, readers may call Maryann Stravous at 610-235-4588. DVCCC over the years have brought comfort to scores of survivors of domestic violence and their children,” she said. “Freddie’s kind and gentle manner just draws people in. The love he shares and comfort he provides is heartwarming and, I believe, healing. It was an honor to share this special milestone with Freddie and Lara.” Lara said that bringing Freddie to the organization is very rewarding. “(I enjoy) seeing the smiles that he brings when he walks into the room, the children that run up to him, the survivor who is calmer because she is petting him and (Freddie) curled up with someone who needs a friend,” she stated. “The vibe that he gives is hard to put words to. Not only is he present, he truly is giving of his love.” Lara said that Freddie is affected by

learned through his engagement with my grandmother. He was not adopted to be a therapy dog, but he became one.” Freddie, now 11, who was certified in 2014 through Therapy Dogs International, regularly visits the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC), where Lara is a board member and an active volunteer who has been certified to meet with clients. Freddie is also a frequent visitor to The Hickman, a senior living community in West Chester. On Dec. 4, DVCCC marked Freddie’s 200th official visit as a therapy dog to the facility. To celebrate the day, the staff members and shelter residents presented him with a special liver muffin cake. According to Melissa Baxter, DVCCC’s chief operating officer, Freddie is a welcome visitor who is loved by children and adults alike. “Freddie’s many visits to

loss and grieved at her grandmother’s passing. “The last week that my grandmother was alive, she was in hospice,” Lara recalled. “We were sitting on the floor in her room, and I turned to Freddie and said, ‘I think it’s time for us to say goodbye.’ He put his paws on her bed and kissed her goodbye on her nose.” Freddie will continue his therapy dog work as long as possible. Because of the energy it takes, Lara limits Freddie’s visits to about three hours of “touch time” weekly. “He will do this until he shows me he does not want to do this anymore,” Lara said. “He had a herniated disc in 2018, and last summer after two surgeries he beat cancer. At 11, he is still feisty and still wants to go and do his work.” Freddie resides with Lara and Tom and his six rescue dog siblings, including one therapy dog in training.

Connelly Foundation Awards $25,000 Grant

Residents Invited To Learn Skiing, Snowboarding

The Connelly Foundation awarded a $25,000 two-year grant to the Friends Association for Care & Protection of Children for programs to help Chester County families gain housing stability and financial security. The grant will support the work of Friends Association’s case managers to assist families by building on their existing strengths and helping them to access resources and services that they need to move out of poverty and reach their true potentials. Case managers assist families with

Gov. Tom Wolf has officially declared January 2020 as Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month in Pennsylvania, with the Senate also making a proclamation. For the entire month, members of the Pennsylvania Ski Areas Association (SkiPA) are offering special discounts on learn-to-ski packages, in order to make it affordable and convenient for first-timers to get

accessing benefits, locating appropriate housing solutions and increasing their incomes. The $25,000 grant will be used for direct expenses in support of four programs Emergency Family Shelter, Homeless Prevention, Housing Stability Case Management and Outreach to Homeless Families. The goal of all of the programs is to apply a holistic approach to programming, to ensure that people’s lives are transformed and the impact of this work is felt for generations to come.

Since its founding in 1955, the Connelly Foundation has been a grantmaking organization awarding grants to nonprofits in the Philadelphia area that demonstrate outstanding performance in meeting community needs. The mission of the Connelly Foundation is to create access for those in need and opportunity for those with vision. Last year, Friends Association partnered with 92 families, supplied 7,655 nights of secure shelter and prevented homelessness for 58 families in Chester County.

The 21-member resorts encompass all regions of the state. The package includes a beginner lift ticket, rental equipment and a beginner group lesson. See Skiing pg 6

are invited to attend, as well as those interested in serving as umpires, historians and scorekeepers. According to team member Rick Stratton, teams follow the rules and customs established in 1864 by dressing in historically similar attire and using periodappropriate equipment, including handmade wooden bats and hand-stitched balls made exclusively for vintage play. In vintage base ball, players are called ballists and the batter is called the striker. Unlike modern baseball, players do not wear gloves in the field. Stratton pointed out that the baseball used in vintage play is slightly bigger and softer than a modern baseball. In addition, only one baseball is used during the entire game. The games have one umpire, and all pitching is underhand. Team members do wear cleats, but all modern-day logos are covered with black tape. Stratton said that scorekeeping is not as detailed as it is in modern baseball. “Traditionally in the 1860s, only runs scored and outs created were accounted for each striker (batter),” he explained. “Our players like to know their stats, so we use more of a modern method to keep score. We do not go to the level of detail of counting pitches or assigning errors to fielders.” The current club consists of individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Some have no prior experience playing competitive baseball, while others have college-level experience. Men and women 18 years or older are invited to participate as players. “In 2013, the club started with about seven full-time members and several walk-ons from other clubs who were willing to fill in as needed,” Stratton noted. “Today, we have about 15 active members but rarely do we ever feel like we have too many players.” Home matches are played at East Goshen Park, and games are free for spectators to attend. Games are played on an open expanse of grass in the park. Canvas bags or sacks filled with rubber chips are used for bases. For the upcoming season, the group will also play games in neighboring states, and, for the first time, the club will travel to Wisconsin in June to participate in a festival with other vintage base ball clubs from around the country. “We routinely travel to Long Island, the eastern shore of Maryland, New Jersey, Gettysburg and points in between,” said Stratton. “In 2016, the club traveled to the St. Louis area for a weekend festival. The 2020 trip to Wisconsin will be our furthest trip yet.” Team players are asked to pay a fee to participate. Full- and part-time memberships are offered. “(Having additional) players is always the top priority. Some of our players retired this past year, and a few have become busy with other pursuits,” Stratton noted. “Extra players mean we have somebody who can umpire. A full-time umpire would help us create a consistent atmosphere of authenticity.” For more information, readers may email brandywinebbc@gmail.com or visit www.brandywinebbc.org or www.facebook.com/BrandywineBBC.

Congregation members at Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC) in Downingtown recently took part in a Reverse Advent Calendar (RAC) program by collecting nonperishable food items during the four weeks preceding Christmas. The donations were collected to benefit the Lord’s Pantry of Downingtown. Traditionally, a person opens a door or window on an Advent calendar, which is used to count down the days to Christmas, to reveal a prize, such as a piece of candy or toy, or to read a Bible verse that tells a portion of the Christmas story. As part of the effort at Hopewell UMC, held for the second time at the church, congregation memebrs were instead asked to donate a gift of a packaged food item on each day of Advent. Members of Cub Scout Pack 8, which is sponsored by the church, also contributed to the effort. “The Cub Scouts held a food drive in November and gave us bags of items to kick off the food drive,” said Becky Bennington, Hopewell UMC’s business administrator. Reverse Advent Calendar sacks (RACSACKs) were distributed to members to transport their food donations from home to Hopewell UMC. The RAC-SACKs also contained instructions and a list of items most needed by the food pantry. Additionally, participants were asked to pray for the people and the families that were to receive the food. Congregation members placed their donations in the church narthex, which featured a large Advent calendar picturing various food items on each day of the month. A running tally of items collected was displayed throughout the month. Nonperishables collected by the congregation included canned fruit and vegetables, instant potatoes, pancake mix and syrup, rice, cereal, tuna, pasta and peanut butter and jelly. On Jan. 11, church volunteers hauled the RAC-SACK donations from the narthex to the Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown. Children, youths and adults took part in the family activity. The group filled the church’s yellow box truck and then caravanned to the Lord’s Pantry to unload the food with the help of pantry volunteers. Bennington said that the food drive was a great success, noting that the food collection extended until Dec. 28. “We collected 6,127 items, which is 1,000 more items that last year,” she reported. Hopewell United Methodist Church is located in East Brandywine Township at 852 Hopewell Road, Downingtown. For more information about church activities, readers may call 610-269-1545 or visit www.hopewellumc.org. Information about the Lord’s Pantry, including how to donate nonperishable food items, can be found at www.lordspantryofdowningtown.org.

MLK Day Observance Planned Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell, and Michelle Kichline have proclaimed Monday, Jan. 20, as Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day in Chester County. The proclamation reads, in part, “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. devoted his life to advancing equality, social justice, and opportunity for all, and challenged all Americans to participate in the never-ending work of building a more perfect union. … On Jan. 20, 2020, and in the days after, many Chester County nonprofits and faithbased organizations, educational institutions, public agencies, and private businesses will hold events marking a day of community service, grounded in King’s teachings that help solve social problems.” The commissioners’ proclamation urged all citizens to participate in community projects connected to the teachings of King and to unite behind efforts that foster racial, cultural, and community harmony. Accepting copies of the proclamation were two Chester County organizations that recognize and honor the legacy of

King through the actions of community service projects and scholarship support St. Paul’s Baptist Church in West Chester and West Chester University’s Frederick Douglass Society. Deacon Glasper Ridgel and the Rev. Richelle Gunter of St. Paul’s Baptist Church thanked the commissioners for the proclamation, noting the church’s MLK Jr. Day of Service history. It began 16 years ago with fewer than 30 volunteers. Since then, it has expanded into a partnership with other organizations and churches; this year, more than 500 volunteers will support 22 service projects, three community events, and 40 sites. According to Andria Young, president of the Frederick Douglass Society at West Chester University, the society’s mission is to bring together members of the university to promote multicultural education, empowerment, and equality. During the week of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it holds a brunch to support scholarship fundraising. It also holds volunteer projects, such as blanket-making sessions for children in area hospitals.

CHEWY HOMEMADE SALTED CARAMELS Sweet, salty, chewy, and melt-in-your mouth delicious, these homemade salted caramels are the best of the best. - 1 & 1/2 cups heavy cream - 1 cup Golden Barrel Organic Cane Sugar - 1/2 cup packed Golden Barrel Light Brown Sugar

- 1/3 cup Golden Barrel Light Corn Syrup - 1 tsp. salt - 1 tbsp. butter, softened - coarse sea salt for topping

Line an 8x8" pan with aluminum foil that overextends the pan on all sides (to lift out for easy removal). Lightly grease foil with butter. Combine cream, sugars, and light corn syrup in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly with wooden spoon until sugars are melted and mixture starts to boil. Stop stirring. Attach a candy thermometer to rim of pan making sure the bottom of the thermometer doesn't touch the bottom of pan. Let mixture boil until temperature reaches 245 degrees F (it'll take time so be patient!) As soon as it reaches 245 degrees, remove from heat and add in salt and butter. Stir until butter melts. Pour hot mixture into prepared pan and sprinkle coarse salt over top. Let set uncovered on counter for 4 hours or overnight. Once set, remove caramel from pan by lifting the foil. Remove foil and cut into rectangles or squares. Wrap individually in wax paper wrappers. Store at room temperature.

Making A Difference Every Day In The Field of Senior Care The field of senior care offers employment opportunities for people with a variety of skills and talents. The senior care industry includes many different positions that are vital to ensuring that senior living communities provide the best possible care for residents as they age. Representatives from the industry note that working in the field of senior care can be a rewarding career choice for

individuals with a passion for helping the senior population. “One of the many perks (of working in senior care) is having the opportunity to be part of something bigger and having the opportunity each and every day to affect people’s lives in a positive way,” explained Kim Focht, director of human resources at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community (QPRC), 625 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville.

HELP WANTED • SENIOR CARE

“Our residents are our primary focus,” noted Kelly Miller, director of sales and marketing at Heatherwood Senior Living Community, 3180 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. “This is their home, and they should be made to feel important and well cared for. Patience and understanding are key. Caring about how well our residents are treated is our main focus.” For Alicia Erdman, sales AGAPE CARE IS HIRING PT PCAs & Caregivers. director for Legend Senior Living of Lititz, 80 W. Millport Road, something she enjoys about working in the senior care industry is the “satisfaction of knowing you were able to help a family and they no longer have to worry about their loved one’s overall safety.” Nurses are in high demand to fill various roles within senior care. Retirement communities offer positions for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), and Registered Nursing Assessment Coordinators. A license is required to work as an RN or LPN. A certification is needed to serve as a CNA, but some senior care employers will help staff members obtain the certification. “We (at QPRC) do provide this education as well as pay our staff to get the education,” noted Focht. Personal care aides and medication technicians are also needed. A certification is required to serve as a med tech, with some employers providing and paying for the necessary training to staff members. “If you are serious, after 90 days (at Heatherwood), we will train and pay for the med tech certification, with the promise of a one-year employee commitment,” noted Miller. Other positions offered in the field of senior care include several roles within dining services for servers, cooks, dishwashers, prep cooks, dietary aides, and managers. Also needed are housekeepers, laundry aides and assistants, maintenance and renovations team members, activities aides, and receptionists. The field of senior care also includes home care professionals, who serve as caregivers, companions, and transportation providers to help seniors continue to live independently in their homes. Full-time, part-time, temporary, and PRN (as needed) employment opportunities are offered in the field of senior care. As facilities care for residents around the clock, employees are needed for all shifts. Nursing jobs offer a variety of options and flexibility, allowing for people craft a work schedule that fits with their current season of life and family obligations. No matter which position they are interested in, one key attribute for senior care jobseekers to exhibit is dependability. “We’re looking for someone who is reliable and shares a passion for seniors,” explained Erdman. Other representatives from

the senior care industry noted that displaying some longevity on a resume, without a lot of job hopping, is also a plus for those looking to get hired. Focht added that employers also look for individuals who have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Experience in the industry is

preferred, but not required. “Bring a positive, team-like attitude, and we will train you,” noted Miller. “These careers require a desire to make a difference in people’s lives. They are both physically and emotionally demanding, and - at the same time - endlessly rewarding,” said Focht.
