“I want to make a real change and a real difference in the world,” stated Ryan Morris of Honey Brook, who is taking steps to achieve that lofty goal. Morris recently won the Schwarzman Scholarship, a prestigious graduate fellowship that will allow him to study in China after college. Morris will graduate in May from Penn State Berks with a Bachelor of Science in business with a concentration in marketing and management and a minor in entrepreneurship and innovation. As a Schwarzman Scholar, Morris, 22, will receive a fully funded scholarship to study at the new Schwarzman College at the Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. Morris will join the Class of

2020 in pursuing a master’s degree in global affairs with a concentration in economics and business. He will study a curriculum that was developed by academics from Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford and Oxford universities. Morris did not follow a direct path on the road to becoming a Schwarzman Scholar. In fact, his original goal was to become a professional race car driver. He fell in love with racing as a child when his parents presented him with the gift of a go-kart. “Going back to the very beginning, I was 7 years old driving quarter-midgets at the Honey Brook Raceway on

Route 322,” he said. Morris, a 2014 graduate of Twin Valley High School, competed in the NASCAR Whelan All-American Series in his senior year, but decided to give up racing completely. “I learned there is a lot more to life than winning races,” he commented. “(I believed that) if I wanted to make an impact, I needed to get an education and became a college student full time and become involved in student government.” He noted that his high school guidance counselor suggested that he consider Penn State See Student pg 5

Manatee Adoptions Available Animal advocates and environmentally conscious shoppers are invited to “adopt” real, living manatees from the Save the Manatee Club. The AdoptA-Manatee program was started to raise more awareness of Florida’s imperiled marine mammals. For a donation, the Save the Manatee Club will send a personalized adoption packet, which includes an adoption certificate, a photo and the life history of a real Florida manatee, and a membership handbook. Manatees like Rocket, Howie, Ariel, and Gator are all popular adoptees, and a new female manatee, Moo Shoo, has been added to the Adopt-AManatee program at Blue Spring State Park in Orange City, Fla. Save the Manatee Club is an nonprofit conservation organization whose mission is to protect manatees and their aquatic habitat for future generations. Through increased public awareness, habitat protection, and enforcement of boating regulations, the organization hopes to ensure manatees survive for the enjoyment of generations to come. Manatee adoptions and a variety of manatee-related merchandise are available by visiting www.savethemanatee.org. To adopt a manatee, readers may also call 800-432-JOIN (5646).

The victory in the championship game was against Springfield (Delaware County) by a score of 37-25. The championship game was a total team effort. Lucas Myers led the team with 14 points, and Tyler Rhode had eight points. Kieran Proska contributed seven points, including a three-pointer to swing momentum early. Braden Rice scored four points, with Andrew LaBruto and Grant Moser contributing two points each and excellent defense. Chester County recently signed contracts on the preservation of its 500th farm, bringing the total number of farm acres preserved in the county to just under 40,000. In total, more than 136,000 acres - 28 percent of land in Chester County has been preserved since the beginning of its open space preservation program in 1989. The recently preserved 109acre farm, owned by Gerald and Cindy Rohrer, is located in Upper Oxford and West Fallowfield townships. It has been a family farm since 1966, when Gerald’s parents took it on as dairy farm. Over the years, the farm changed to raising heifers before moving to crop farming. Gerald, the youngest of five children, and Cindy took over the farm in 2001, and today the Rohrers grow corn for livestock consumption, hay for the equine industry and mulch hay for the mushroom industry. The family also runs a small sideline business of trucking for agriculture haulage. Chester County’s Agricultural Preservation program began in 1989 when the resolution was adopted. The first farm was preserved in Newlin Township in 1990, and over the years, the county has contributed more than $106 million toward farmland preservation. Farm preservation in Chester County is based on an agricultural conservation easement. Farms that are 10 acres or more are eligible if they are adjacent to permanently preserved land. Farms not adjacent to permanently preserved land must be a minimum of 50 acres for the state/county program and 25 acres in size for the Municipal Challenge Grant program. Chester County farm owners may review the eligibility requirements for preservation by visiting http://www.chesco.org/1368/Far m-Programs-Overview. The deadline for applications is Aug. 1 of each year.

Doctors and nurses who have patients that come in will have access to medically certified interpreters.” Morris took part in an interview for the Schwarzman Scholarship last fall in New York City. “Everyone I was going up against were from Ivy League schools, (places like) West Point and great schools around the world,” he said. “I am a small-town, Twin Valley guy and Penn State student; I felt like Rocky going against Apollo Creed.” Morris stated that he plans to continue working with Traduki Technologies remotely while studying in China. “Through my start-up, I am already tackling one (area) of health care, which is the language barrier that can limit health care access,” he said. “My goal is to come out of this strong enough to build the company even more. Like I told the interviewers, I want to be like Elon Musk - create companies and use business techniques to solve a problem.”

Pennsylvania Master Naturalist is partnering with Green Valleys Watershed Association to prepare citizens to become volunteer leaders in their communities through natural resource conservation education, citizen science and stewardship. Pennsylvania Master Naturalist is a citizen volunteer initiative with three key components: an initial 55-hour volunteer training, annual volunteer service, and continuing education in the natural sciences. Master Naturalist volunteers design and pursue a wide variety of service projects, including habitat restoration, native plantings, nature walks, interpretative displays or publications on natural history, water quality monitoring, and support of the natural resource

conservation efforts of partnering organizations. Since 2010, Pennsylvania Master Naturalist volunteers in Pennsylvania have engaged in more than 25,600 hours of conservation service, contributed $587,000 in conservation value and impact to numerous regional partners, reached more than 20,000 people through education and outreach initiatives, and improved more than 9,700 acres of habitat through stewardship service. Once accepted into the Pennsylvania Master Naturalist program, participants begin by attending an initial intensive training. This natural history training includes 50 hours of classroom (weekday evenings) and field sessions (Saturdays). Following this training, participants engage in 30 hours of

service in the first year and eight hours of continuing education in order to become certified as a Master Naturalist Volunteer. Participants also complete annual service and continuing education hours to maintain their status as Master Naturalist Volunteers. Spring training for Green Valleys Watershed Association will begin on Wednesday, April 3, and run through Wednesday, June 12. The finalized training schedule along with the application and information about training can be found at www.pamaster naturalist.org under “Become a Master Naturalist.” The application deadline is Friday, Feb. 1. Book lovers of all ages are invited to browse thousands of titles being offered for sale at the Second Reading II Bookstore in West Chester. All proceeds from the sale of books, as well as puzzles, games and greeting cards, are donated directly to the West Chester Area Senior Center. Managing the 8,000-square-foot store is Ann Marie Fletcher-Moore, who makes every effort to help shoppers by keeping the facility neat and well organized. The fiction section is sorted alphabetically by author, and nonfiction books are sorted into categories such as sports, history, decorating, selfhelp, cookbooks and parenting. “We’ve broken everything down into smaller categories, and everything is alphabetized within its section,” she explained. “In sports, for example, there is basketball, golf, hunting and fishing. Even fiction is broken down into mystery, romance and classics, (among other sections).” She noted that the store also offers books of local interest, coffee table books and large-print books. Additionally, there is a children’s section where the books are also alphabetized. In the children’s area, visitors will find a checkers game and a miniature couch where children can read while their parents shop. “We have to be organized. This way, we can help people find the books they are looking for,” Fletcher-Moore stated. “You can put in a request for a book. If a book comes in through donations, we will call and tell you and you can come pick it up.” Fletcher-Moore noted that the store is always seeking book donations. The public is invited to donate new or used books in good condition. Books are accepted on Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In addition to offering convenient shopping, the bookstore also promotes reading by offering

The store offers thousands of gently used books, a children’s section and monthly specials. monthly specials and “Wacky Wednesday” sales promotions. For January, all diet and health books are 50 percent off. “I work with the other volunteers to (establish) a theme,” Fletcher-Moore said, noting the that theme is reflected in the store’s two front window displays. “The theme in February will (revolve around) Valentine’s Day. We might offer pink books for sale.” She also noted that a bag sale is offered daily at the bookstore. For a fee, shoppers can fill a bag of books; bags are provided. “I sell over 20,000 books a year. We get at least 40 to 50 boxes of donations a week,” Fletcher-Moore pointed out, noting that the most popular sellers are cookbooks and trade-size fiction titles, which are larger-size books. “We have new arrivals that we put up in front in hardback and paperback. These are books that people have read once and then donated to us.” “This is our ninth year in this store,” she added. “Second Reading I is on Church Street in West Chester, and they have been around for more than 25 years.” Fletcher-Moore said that the success of Second Reading II, which opened nine years ago, is thanks to the hard-working volunteers.

“Without the volunteers, it wouldn’t run as smoothly. They sort, shelve and work with the customers,” she said. “Most of them are retirees; they range in age from about 55 to close to 90. I also have younger people - high school and college students - who do volunteer hours as well.” Fletcher-Moore believes that many people still prefer reading a book rather than a tablet or e-reader. “Even with all the electronics, (reading) is coming back,” she said. “People are reading, and they are reading to their children. It’s a nice thing to see for the community.” The Second Reading II Bookstore is located in the Parkway Shopping Center, 929 S. High St., West Chester. help stop the spread of the spotted lanternfly. States with spotted lanternfly populations are also required to follow the permit requirements for Pennsylvania. This will help prevent the movement of the pest from other states into Pennsylvania. The spotted lanternfly permit training teaches business owners, managers, and designated employees how to comply with the quarantine - an important legal designation to help stop the spread of spotted lanternfly - to ensure each of their employees are complying with the law. The quarantine order directs businesses, residents, and county authorities to follow guidelines to prevent the movement of the certain articles that contain any living stages of the spotted lanternfly, including egg masses, nymphs, and adults such as logs, stumps, or any tree parts; nursery stock; crated materials; and trucks or vehicles not stored indoors. By investing time and personnel

to inspect vehicles to safeguard against transporting insects, people can help to ensure this pest does not reach farther beyond those counties that are already quarantined. As part of the spotted lanternfly quarantine agreement beginning on Wednesday, May 1, The Department’s Bureau of Plant Industry will begin to perform inspections and verification checks to confirm that businesses are properly permitted. Failure to take the permit exam and educate employees could result in possible penalties and fines. The permit training and testing can be accessed through Penn State Extension by visiting https://extension.psu.edu/spotted -lanternfly-permit-training. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture is encouraging businesses to obtain the required spotted lanternfly permit to ensure they are complying with the spotted lanternfly quarantine orders. As the next phase of the spotted lanternfly life cycle gears up, now is an ideal time for businesses to learn how they can jumpstart this spring’s fight. There is no cost to businesses to obtain a permit. Under the law, businesses in Pennsylvania need to take the online permit training and exam and receive a permit for their vehicles. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture continues its work to contain and minimize the spread of the spotted lanternfly while also keeping commerce flowing in Pennsylvania. In November 2017, 13 Pennsylvania counties - Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia, and Schuylkill were placed under quarantine to

Friends Association for the Care and Protection of Children has announced Jennifer Lopez as its new executive director. Lopez most recently served as Chester County’s Deputy Chief of Adult Probation and Pretrial Services. She will begin her new role on Monday, Jan. 21. As executive director, Lopez will be responsible for managing the organization and providing strategic planning to enhance the

The post is named for a Downingtown resident who was one of the first local soldiers known to have died in World War I. Membership is open to veterans of various conflicts, including World War II, the Vietnam War, the Korean War and the Gulf War, as well as those currently serving in the War on Terror. Those who join are asked to pay a yearly membership fee. The chapter is seeking younger veterans and active-duty military personnel to join the post in order to ensure that the chapter continues. “A lot of people don’t get involved until they retire, but without the younger people a lot of veterans organizations would have to (disband),” Wimer stated. Wimer explained that the post is called a “paper chapter”

because it does not have a building and social hall like other local American Legions. Rather, members meet at Freedom Village. “We are not a place to come and (socialize). We are really focused on the community,” he said. Post members take part in various activities. They provide an honor guard at area parades, attend the funerals of veterans, take part in Veterans Day ceremonies and replace the American flags on the graves of veterans on Memorial Day. The members also work closely with the Coatesville VA to provide assistance to veterans. Most recently, members of the post participated in the Wreaths Across America event at Hopewell United Methodist Church on Dec. 15, 2018. Following a ceremony in the church recognizing the various branches of the military, post members joined Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and members of the community to place wreaths on the graves of veterans.

“We are involved in various Scout troops, plus we sponsor the Diamond Dogs, the Downingtown Legion baseball team,” noted Wimer. Post 475 awards college scholarships to one student from each Downingtown High School East and West, presents school medals to eighth-grade students selected by their teachers as good citizens and sponsors a student to attend Keystone Boys State, a good citizenship training program. The American Legion, with a motto of “Still Serving America,” is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019. “ We are in the planning stages of doing something special this year,” said Wimer. For more information about the American Legion, including details on membership, readers may contact Wimer at post475amlegion@gmail.com or 484-645-2369. toys in time for Christmas. In addition, clients received turkeys and fixings for their holiday dinners. According to Ken Ross, the pantry’s board chairman, coats were available during three distribution days in December. The garments were donated through coat drives held at Hopewell United Methodist Church in Downingtown, St. Peter Catholic Church in West Brandywine and the Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department. “Most of the coats were new, and some were gently used,” Ross said, noting that more than 150 coats were given out. In addition, clients of the pantry received hats, scarves and gloves that were donated by residents of the Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook and the LifeGroup at East Brandywine Baptist Church in Downingtown. Gift stockings and 600 toys provided by individuals, a local business and the Toys for Tots program were also made available on the three distribution days for families served by the pantry. Ross noted that about 550 toys were given out in December. The remaining 50 toys were available to clients during the Jan. 9 distribution. “All the toys were new,” he pointed out. The turkeys were distributed on Dec. 2, 2018. Young women from the Pegasus Fastpitch Softball team of Exton provided assistance in packing the holiday food boxes. “Our regular food assortment was greatly enhanced as 251 turkeys were distributed (along with the toys and coats) - all making for a happier holiday season for those we serve,” said Ross. Ross recently issued his yearend report for the pantry, noting that December’s distribution was the largest one to date. “Although we saw some slight reductions in need at times

throughout 2018 and more local families achieving food independence, those seeking help in December exceeded any other time in our five-year history,” Ross stated. According to the report, a total of 1,450 individuals were served through nearly 500 family visits in 2018, which represents a 10 percent increase in the number of families served and 160 more people. “In all, over 20,000 pounds of food passed through the pantry,” Ross reported. Ross credited the local organizations, churches and individual donors for their generosity in providing the children’s items, holiday food items and coats. He also thanked the volunteers for their efforts. “Although you do it all year long, the work this December seemed extra special, and without the donation of your time, there is no Honey Brook Food Pantry,” he told them. Ross added that goals for the pantry in 2019 include offering more initiatives that promote food independence, offering access to employment resources and developing a nutrition program for children under age 3. The pantry is located at Door 8 at the Good Food Inc. Distribution Center, 5064 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook (across from Wimpy and Dee’s Diner). Distributions are held on the second Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the fourth Wednesday of the month from 4 to 6:30 pm. For more information about the pantry, readers may visit www.honeybrookfoodpantry.org or search for “Honey Brook Food Pantry” on Facebook. For up-todate information about food distributions, readers may call 610273-6102. Those interested in volunteering, donating food or conducting a food drive are asked to contact Ross at KRoss1414@aol.com.

Handling A Prolonged Power Outage Sandwich-Soup Combo Accidents and storms can disrupt the electricity that powers everything in homes and businesses. A short-term loss of power can be a nuisance, but extended power outages can cause damage and may even be dangerous. Widespread power outages are

often anticipated during or after severe storms, which can disable entire power grids. Because damaged power lines and infrastructure must be carefully assessed after severe storms, it may take anywhere from hours to several days before power is fully restored.

well-fed and requires an electric pump to activate flow. People should stock up on blankets and warm clothing. Power outages during the winter can be especially challenging because of the lack of heat in a home. Family members can huddle together in small rooms to conserve heat. People with wood-burning stoves can use them to keep warm. Fireplaces tend to be more show than ambient heat providers, but they can still serve as a heat source in a pinch. Those who have a generator should run it safely. The Consumer Product Safety Commission states that generators should be operated as far away from the house as possible to avoid deadly carbon monoxide fumes. Also, individuals should use appropriately gauged, outdoor-rated extension cords to power up generators. It is also important to stay put and avoid the road after a storm that causes a power outage. Wires may be down, traffic lights may not work, and dangerous debris may be littering the roads. Hunkering down is the best approach until power is restored.

In a large bowl, mix together flour, cocoa, soda, salt, and pudding mix. Set aside. Beat together coconut oil and sugars until light and creamed. Beat in eggs and vanilla for 2 minutes. Add dry ingredients and buttermilk to wet ingredients. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour batter evenly into greased pan and spread evenly. Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 30 min. Then lower temperature to 325 and continue to bake for an additional 30-40 minutes until toothpick inserted in middle comes out mostly clean. Cool for 5 minutes in pan before inverting onto wire rack to cool completely. Ganache: Chop up chocolate bar into chunks (or use chocolate chips) and set in a bowl. Pour heavy whipping cream into a saucepan and heat on medium-high until heated but not boiling. Pour cream on top of chocolate and let set for 10 minutes. Resist the urge to stir at this point! After 10 minutes, whisk together the chocolate and cream until smooth and shiny. Let set for a couple minutes before pouring on top of cooled cake. (Make sure your cake is on a cake plate.) Let ganache cool until slightly hardened. Store in airtight container.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notes that food spoilage is one of the hazards of long-term power outages. If a storm is imminent, local residents can be proactive by freezing the contents of the refrigerator when possible so that items can stay at safe temperatures longer, advises the FDA. Food can remain safe for up to two hours at refrigerator temperature before it starts to spoil. Grouping food together in the freezer also can help it stay colder longer. Having extra ice on hand or freezing containers of water also can provide a chilling effect, as well as serve as a water supply if faucet water is unavailable, which can be a concern for those with well-pumped water. Individuals’ barbecue can turn out to be beneficial during power outages. Many stoves, even gas ones, will not light because of electric ignitions. A gas camping stove or barbecue can serve as the primary place to cook food until power is restored. People should always have a secondary propane tank on hand. Plenty of bottled water should be kept on hand, especially if one’s regular water supply is

The grant will be used by the three agencies to help HPP families build on existing strengths and identify education and services they need to s u c cessfully transition from poverty/homelessness to permanent housing and financial self-sufficiency. The grant will be used for direct expenses in support of the HPP, including long-term case management. Direct benefits to families will include rent or utility assistance, eviction prevention,

transitional housing and other supportive services. Home4Good helps those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness by channeling dollars to local service organizations that know how to help. Funding is offered annually by FHLBank Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency. This year, FHLBank Pittsburgh provided $3 million toward the effort and PHFA provided $1.5 million, for a total contribution of $4.5 million. Friends Association promotes the independence of families with children by providing shelter, programs and services that seek to prevent and end homelessness in Chester County. In 2018, Friends Association saved more than 120 families and 270 children from homelessness.

Vehicle Safety Advice Given After home and work, the next most common place people spend their time is in their vehicles. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety says the average American spends 17,600 minutes driving each year. Because they spend so much time behind the wheel, drivers need to be prepared for breakdowns. Packing an emergency kit in the car can help people make the best of such situations. A car emergency kit can help drivers get back on the road promptly. Without such kits, drivers may be stranded for hours after a breakdown. Emergency kits also come in handy during weather-related events that can sideline cars until roads become passable. Getting caught in a vehicle during a snowstorm and failing to have the proper gear can be a lifethreatening scenario under extreme conditions. The Department of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Homeland Security note that these key items should always be included in a car emergency kit: durable bags or crates to store supplies, a complete first aid kit, a small fire extinguisher, jumper cables, rain ponchos, a plastic tarp, flashlights and extra batteries, bottled water, a small cache of nonperishable foods, a wrench and pliers, local maps, rags, duct tape, a multipurpose tool, an ice scraper, automotive fluids, blankets and warm clothing, cat litter for slick roads, tire-changing equipment, a spare tire, road flares or caution reflectors, an empty gas canister, cash for gas and a phone charger cable. Being prepared can make a difference when vehicles are sidelined. In addition to an emergency kit, cars and trucks should be regularly maintained to prevent breakdowns. This includes ensuring all fluids are at proper levels, filters are changed, batteries are in good working order and tires are inflated correctly. Investing in a roadside assistance service also can help get drivers back on the road quickly.

Sports such as racquetball, soccer, boxing, and mixed martial arts provide ample exercise and opportunities to meet other fitness-minded people. If games or competitions only take place once or twice a week, individuals can supplement their participation with more traditional workouts on off-days. -Take along an electronic tablet. Many fitness facilities now include WiFi internet access with the cost of a membership. People can take their electronic tablets with them to the gym to watch a television show or movie while burning calories during the cardiovascular portions of their workouts. -Periodically change the reg-

imen. It can be easy for people to get bored with a workout if they are always doing the same repetitive exercises. Individuals may ask a personal trainer at their gym for some advice on how to switch things up and still meet their fitness goals. -Set new goals. Boredom with a workout regimen sometimes creeps in because people have achieved their initial fitness

goals and have not set new ones. Once people have achieved a goal, they should set new ones so they have a new carrot dangling on the end of their stick, so to speak. Nearly everyone encounters workout boredom at one point another. Various strategies can help individuals overcome such a malaise and reinvigorate their enthusiasm for exercising.

Even the most ardent fitness enthusiasts sometimes lack the motivation to exercise. Various factors, including boredom with a fitness regimen, can affect one’s motivation to hit the gym. In instances when boredom is difficult to overcome, men and women who want to stay in shape can try the following strategies: -Join a sports league. A workout does not have to be limited to the weight room or the cardiovascular area of a local gym. If one’s motivation to work out is waning, a competitive sports league may be the answer. Many fitness facilities even offer sports leagues for adults on their premises or at nearby parks.

Creamy Ham ‘n’ Broccoli Busy families that do not have the time to spend an hour or more in the kitchen preparing weeknight dinners can turn to slow cookers to do the work for them. Slow cookers cook foods on a low temperature over several hours. Slow cookers do not require constant attention, making them ideal for people who want to prep meals before leaving the house and then return to a hot meal in the evening. Many foods, from breakfasts to appetizers to desserts, can be prepared with slow cookers. But slow cookers are perhaps best suited for hearty meals, such as this recipe for Creamy Ham ‘n’ Broccoli from “Casseroles, Slow Cooker and Soups” (RDA Enthusiast Brands) by Taste of Home editors.

Training For Landscapers Set Landscape contractors are invited to a two-day intensive class on Estimating and Bidding for Landscape Contractors planned for Wednesday, Jan. 23, and Thursday, Jan. 24. The workshop will be held in conference Rooms 205 and 206 at Penn State Great Valley Campus, 30 Swedesford Road, Malvern. The workshop will discuss how to determine the overhead of operating a landscaping business

and create a profitable bid. There will be opportunities to ask questions and explore bidding practices with other contractors. The workshop will discuss the benefits and pitfalls of some common estimating methods. It will explore the concept of production rates in depth, including why it is important to know what they are and how to determine these rates. The class will also discuss profit margins and offering employee

benefits. On the first day, the class will work through a spreadsheet using real-world examples to figure overhead costs of a landscape installation business. Each participant will receive an electronic copy of this spreadsheet, so he or she can adapt it and use it for his or her own business. On the second day, the class will work together to create a bid for a small residential hardscape and plant

installation job in detail, using the overhead costs determined on the first day of the class. There is a cost to attend. Preregistration and payment are required by Tuesday, Jan. 22. To register, readers may visit https://extension.psu.edu/land scape-bidding. For more details, readers may contact Emelie Swackhamer at exs33@psu.edu or Penn State Extension at 610489-4315.

Pure Entertainment LBC To Stage “Bye Bye Birdie” By Ann Mead Ash

“What I love about ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ is that you can come to this show and just enjoy,” said Heather Grayberg, who will both direct and choreograph the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) winter presentation. “(‘Birdie’ is) super fun, kitschy, loud, bright, and silly in a lot of ways.” “Bye Bye Birdie” is a Tony Award-winning musical that first played on Broadway in 1960. LBC will stage the show in the Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Fridays, Jan. 18 and 25, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, Jan. 19 and 26, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. “Birdie,” which has more than 30 members in the cast, is the story of Conrad Birdie, a singer and teenage heartthrob, played by Brayden Krikke, who is drafted

into the Army. His agent, Albert Peterson, played by Richard Thomas, and Peterson’s secretary and love interest, Rosie Alvarez, played by Rachel Wiles, concoct a scheme to turn the situation into a publicity coup by planning to have Birdie sing one final song to a female member of his fan club, accompanied by a “last kiss.” The song and subsequent pucker are to take place on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Enter teenager Kim MacAfee, played by Brianna Brady, who wins the competition. “Birdie,” which is based loosely on Elvis Presley’s induction into the Army, is set in the late 1950s. “It’s between poodle skirts and the hippie movement,” said Grayberg. “We’re trying to get in the reality of it,” she added, stating that there is a challenge in humanizing the characters to encourage audience members to relate to them rather than making them over-the-top caricatures. “We want to personify the Elvis (character) as much as possible,” Grayberg said. Focusing on the tension between Rosie and Albert’s mother, Mae, played by Rachel Allen, Grayberg also hopes to showcase the role of the young Hispanic woman. “Rosie is extremely Americanized and a strong character. She is very much the progressive woman of that time period. It will be interesting to play (up) the relationship between her and (Albert’s) mother,” she said. While Grayberg’s directing vision calls for making the roles more realistic, her plans for the choreography of the show are to

Grayberg is also working to emphasize the musical selections. “It will be overdanced,” said Grayberg. “It’s going to be big.” According to Grayberg, the production will challenge student actors in a variety of ways. “The song ‘Put on a Happy Face’ will be explosive with dance,” said the director, who hopes to add some juggling into the number. “Honestly Sincere” will be another standout. “You can’t help but dance and move and groove to it,” said Grayberg, who added that songs from the 1995 film will be included. “They give the character of Rosie a little more dimension,” she said, adding that she hopes audience members will find themselves humming the tunes on the way out. To keep the show moving continuously, the set will be a house that separates and turns around to create different geometric

shapes. “It will complement the talent and let the talent be in the forefront,” said Grayberg. The set will allow for scene changes to remain fluid. “I hope to have no blackouts at all,” said Grayberg, who plans to choreograph set changes. “It will feel like a consistent piece of art.” Grayberg praised the cast members, most of whom are part of the school’s musical theater program. “Our students are now working professionally out in the community, and the caliber of our shows will get better because of that,” said Grayberg. “They are becoming true career professionals.” Tickets to the show may be purchased at www.lbc.edu/ events. Tickets may also be purchased at the LBC box office in the Good Shepherd Chapel on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Readers who have questions may call 717-560-8241.

Support Grants Available State Cultural and Historical Support Grants are now available for qualified museums and official county historical societies. This is the sixth year that the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PMHC) has worked with the state legislature to provide funding for museums through the grant program. A total of $2 million was included in the 2018-19 state budget for the initiative. The Cultural and Historical Support Grant program is restricted to eligible organizations

that are not supported by other state agency funding programs, including museums located in Pennsylvania with annual operating budgets exceeding $100,000 and at least one fulltime professional staff person. Some museums are not eligible if they are eligible for grant support from other state agencies. The maximum award for a museum is $65,000. In addition, official county historical societies are eligible to apply. The awards for Official County Historical Societies range

from $2,500 to $4,000. Applicants must meet organizational eligibility requirements. Awards are based on a calculation that uses the operating budget from the most recently completed fiscal year. Applications must be received by Friday, Jan. 25. All PHMC grant applications are now submitted on the commonwealth’s Single Application for Assistance system at www.esa.dced. state.pa.us. Eligibility information and grant guidelines can be found at www.phmc.pa.gov.
