“Ichose (to sell) apparel because I wanted to do something related to my faith and my love of the outdoors. These are two of the things I feel strongest about,” said Austin Hittle, a 2021 graduate of Twin Valley High School (TVHS), when describing Holy Cross Outdoors (HCO), a business that he founded in March 2022, which offers hats, T-shirts and hoodies for sale.
Hittle is currently a sophomore at Moravian University in Bethlehem, where he is a business and marketing major. To start HCO, he used his own funds, which he earned by working summers at Weaver’s
Orchard in Morgantown. “What better way to get my feet wet in the business world than to dive in head first?” he said.
Hittle, who played varsity lacrosse and football at TVHS, said that he has always been interested in business. In middle school, he used Instagram to string photos and create videos for friends. “My dad started a business. He trains law enforcement officers. My family has always had that entrepreneurial mindset,” said Hittle.
Hittle recently used his new business to raise funds for the families of the two Pennsylvania State troopers who were involved in a hitand-run on I-95 in March 2022. “ We did a fundraiser for them with
$500 going to the families,” he noted. “My dad has been in law enforcement since before I was born and in the military. I always had that appreciation for (law enforcement officers).”
Hittle gained a lot of experience while starting his own business. He began by developing the company logo, which features a cross and antlers. “The idea started in January/February of last year. I wrote down three sheets of different names. Holy Cross clicked for me,” he stated. “I was photo editing and drawing (the logo) for a while, and it all came together.”
He also launched a Facebook page and website and developed the company’s mission statement, “HCO is a faith-based outdoors brand devoted to spreading the word of God and the love for the outdoors.”
Since he is away at school, Hittle also had to find a place to manufacture the clothing items as needed, rather than keeping inventory at home. “I did a lot of research and found a business (that) can link my website to their program. When I get an order, it sends right to them and it prints on demand,” he explained. “It leaves very little overhead. That way I don’t have to be on-site for production. It is produced by a third party shipped directly to the consumer.”
Right now, orders are only taken online, but Hittle would like to expand that effort. “If a product is in a physical location, it is more likely to sell because of consumer interest. I would like to start selling in local stores,” he noted.
So far, most of the company’s earnings have been put back into the business, but Hittle is pleased with how his efforts have progressed. “It worked out. There were hiccups along the way trying to figure things out, but I had nothing to deter me or make me want to stop,” he said.

“We will do the games first and get (the youngsters) up and running around and playing. Then they can move to a craft,” explained Jennifer Harding, a member of the cheerleader squad fundraising committee. “After the craft we’ll have a snack, like Goldfish (crackers), and then a movie. By the time mom and dad get them, they will be ready for bed.”
She noted that the cheerleaders, who are seventh- and eighthgraders at DBMS, will run the games and crafts.
Proceeds will benefit the cheerleading squad. “They have to cover the cost of their own uniforms and competition fees,” said Harding. “We try to run individual fundraisers and team fundraisers, so families are not shouldering the entire cost of their child wanting to cheer.”
Past fundraisers have included a designer bag bingo.
The squad cheers at DBMS football games in the fall and at basketball games in the winter. “There are also one or two competitions a month starting in October,” Harding pointed out. “There was one in November, two in December, and there are four in January and February.”
She said that the cheerleaders are ready to take on their child care duties on Feb. 17. “They practice from two to two and a half hours (per session), and they have all-day practices on Saturdays when they are learning a routine,” Harding said. “They are active girls; they will keep the kids moving.”

MORGANTOWN -
Adoptions take place on Mondays through Fridays from 1 to 6:30 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.
When arriving, visitors are asked to register by choosing “check in” on the ARL website. This is a new process that was adopted during the pandemic. The waiting list closes at 6 p.m. on weekdays and at 4:30 p.m. on weekends.
“You register on a virtual waitlist,” explained Jose Joel DelgadoRivera, chief communications officer at the ARL. “The adoption specialist will then meet with you and go over your lifestyle and your needs and help choose a (pet) if you don’t have one already in mind. You get the animal the same day.”
Those with other pets are asked to bring them along for a meetand-greet. “We prefer that you bring your other dog. They do a walk through our campus with both dogs to see how they react to each other,” he noted. “If you have kids, you can bring them, too, just to make sure that they get along.”
“If you are adopting a dog, you should be ready to pay a license fee for the county,” he added. “For a cat, you should bring a carrier; if you don’t have one, we will provide a cardboard carrier (for a nominal fee).”
Among the animals currently available for adoption for the reduced fee is Zane, a 4-year-old American pit bull, who is described as “a friendly guy with lots of energy.” “Zane has been with us for a long time; he is one of our longest residents,” Delgado-Rivera noted.
Also available is Sylvie, a 1-yearold domestic short-haired cat. Sylvie was rescued from a house with many other cats and is looking for an owner who will help her feel safe and loved.
The ARL, located at 58 Kennel
Sylvie (left photo) and Zane (right photo) are currently available for adoption.
Road, Birdsboro, is a nonprofit organization that cares for more than 5,000 animals each year by helping them find new homes or reuniting them with their owners. The ARL also offers low-cost veterinary services

Greenmore Farm Animal Rescue Has A Life-Saving Mission
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Saving dogs in life-threatening situations is the goal of Greenmore Farm Animal Rescue, a nonprofit organization based in southern Chester County. All rescued dogs are provided with food, shelter and health care until they are adopted into permanent homes.
Julia Altman founded the rescue on the family farm in West Grove in 2010. “My wife has always been interested in animal welfare,” explained Altman’s husband, Jack Merritt, volunteer director of donor relations. “Shortly after buying the property, she started a little homebased rescue with a handful of dogs. It started very small. She had two or three dogs, and after a year or so, it kept growing organically. We built a small climate-controlled kennel with eight runs on our property in 2012.”
“In 2015, we hired some help and got volunteers and hit a milestone of 1,500 lives saved in those first five years,” he added.
Merritt explained that dogs that come to the rescue are mostly from the southern states, including Kentucky and West Virginia, and throughout the Appalachian region. “Almost all animals come from high-kill shelters where the dogs are overbred and (the rescues) are underfunded and they don’t have spay and neuter (programs). They get so overfull that they put dogs to sleep to make space. Kind-hearted people in those areas comb the shelters for dogs that are getting ready to be put to sleep.”
Once dogs are located, they become the responsibility of Greenmore Farm
Animal Rescue. “We get them vetted and arrange for transport to Pennsylvania, which is one of our biggest expenses,” noted Merritt. “In the very beginning, volunteer transporters

Greenmore Farm
moved dogs by car. As we got bigger and the industry has changed, there are people who do paid transport. We have people who bring 10 or 15 dogs at a time in a rented van.”
Those interested in adopting a dog must complete an application. If they currently own a dog, prospective adoptees must bring the animal to a meet-and-greet. “Our (goal) is to get them what we call ‘furever’ homes,” said Merritt. “We get them in, get them healthy, socialized and post them on social media like petfinder.com.” Adoptable pets can also be viewed at www.face book.com/greenmorefarm.
In addition to searching for adoptive families, the rescue is in need of foster families and volunteers. “Every dog gets walked around the perimeter of the farm. That has to be done three times a day for every dog,” said Merritt.
“We have a puppy room (because the puppies) have to be nurtured and cuddled and played with. The volunteers have to clean the crates, but they sit on the floor with a lap full of puppies for an hour.”
All the efforts have allowed the rescue to save the lives of 4,000 dogs as of October 2022. “Although we in the rescue community see a lot of heartbreaking stuff every day, each time we are able to place one of these beautiful dogs in their furever home, it’s all worthwhile,” said Altman, noting that those who adopt a loving pet benefit as well. “We are actually saving people, one dog at a time.”
