Birdsboro library welcomes new youth program coordinator BY FRANCINE FULTON
The goal of the Twin Valley High School Mini-THON Club, led by teacher Lance Chappelle (far left), is to raise money for Four Diamonds.
TVHS Mini-THON Club to offer Babysitting Night
P
arents looking for a night out to celebrate Valentine’s Day are invited to drop their children off at Twin Valley High School (TVHS) for a Babysitting Night being presented by the Twin Valley Mini-THON Club. The event will be held on Friday, Feb. 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. During the evening, children will be able to enjoy crafts, games and a movie. A pizza dinner will be provided. “We prefer that people register, but walk-ins will be welcome,” said TVHS senior Chelsea Hurley, who is co-overall of Twin Valley Mini-T HON along with junior Ashley Siv. “(Babysitting Night) is open to any age (child) that parents feel
comfortable dropping off.” Chelsea said that the games and Valentine’s Day-themed craft will be age appropriate. “We will have crafts for older kids and toddler age,” she noted. “There will be a lot of variation so kids can pick what they want to do.” An age-appropriate movie will end the evening. A fee will be charged for babysitting. There will be separate prices for one child, two children and three or more children. Both cash and checks will be accepted for payment. “We are hoping to welcome as many kids as possible,” Chelsea said. “We will have about 20 students (volunteering), including the (club’s) 11 officers. We will get more (volunteers) if needed.”
In addition to students, Lance Chappelle, the club’s adviser, will also be on hand to provide supervision. The babysitting event is just one fundraiser of Twin Valley Mini-THON. The club raises money for Four Diamonds, a nonprofit organization that has a mission to conquer childhood cancer. The main fundraiser of the student-run club is its Mini-THON, which is a dance marathon modeled after the Penn State THON that raises money for families with children being treated for cancer at Penn State Children’s Hospital. “We did Breakfast with Santa and a Craft Fair, and we did kids’ crafts at that as well,” noted Chelsea. Club members also held a Letters from Santa program,

Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m. “My goal right now is to offer stability and consistency from the groups and the clubs that we already have and to build a better friendship with the community,” Hamel said, adding, “In the future, I would love to be able to get more teens back into the library like it was when I was a teenager. That would mean reaching out to the high school to see what we can do to get teens more involved.” Hamel, who is the mother of a 9-year-old and 4-year-old, said she enjoys working with children and has volunteered in the past at a kindergarten center. She also runs her own business. She is an event planner for weddings and parties and does photography and florals as well. “I’m planning many events for kids now,” she said. Cancer support group offers comfort and encouragement BY FRANCINE FULTON
Providing encouragement, information and comfort to those newly diagnosed with cancer as well as cancer survivors is the goal of the cancer support group that meets at Conestoga Mennonite Church. Meetings are held year round at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month, with the exception of a summer break in June and August. A cc o rd i n g t o c a n c e r sur vivor Cher yl Heineman, who leads the group, meetings generally feature a guest speaker or educational program. “The guest speaker is at the beginning of the evening. When the guest speaker is finished,

we take a break and come back as a group and share updates and what is going on in our lives. It helps to know where everyone is and how they are feeling,” said Cheryl. “If there is no speaker, I have different topics that I know are important to the group. I feel out the group and see where they are.” She said that the group recently experienced the death of one of its members, which had an impact on participants. “When we had the death, we helped the group process it and talk about it,” she said. She said that prior to his passing, the group was able to benefit from the person’s experiences. “It was hard for the group, but by the same token, his response (to
his circumstances) was an encouragement,” she said. “Even though he had this horrible illness, he could still be here, share and have a purpose. He (was able) to share (feelings) that he was dealing with.” “At first, he said cancer would not take him and then he became resolved and he (made) his peace and said that he will be with the Lord,” she added. The meetings, which generally last until 8:30 p.m., end in prayer. Cheryl started the support group, which is open to people of all ages, in the midst of the pandemic in July of 2020. Her husband, the Rev. David Heineman, who is a board-certified hospice chaplain, offers support and expertise for

the group. The next scheduled c a n c e r s u p p o r t g ro u p meeting will be held on Feb. 15. Future meetings dates are March 21, April 18 and May 16. Conestoga Mennonite Church is located at 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown. For more information, contact Cheryl at 610-762-0002 or csgcmc @ptd.net.

Because many people face the additional burden of heating their homes during the winter months, it is especially important that community members donate items to area food sharing boxes to help those in need. There are several boxes located in the area, including a Blessing Box that was put in place by Girl Scouts from B irdsb oro Tro op 1080, who installed the box as part of their Bronze Award Project in May of 2023. The food sharing box is located next to the borough police station at the corner of Cinder and Mill streets in Birdsboro. Korinne Blackwell, one the troop leaders, suggested the following items for placement in the box: dried goods, such as pasta, rice, oatmeal and cereal; canned meats, beans and vegetables; and peanut butter. “(People may) donate pretty much anything that is shelf stable,” said Blackwell. “Our community does a great job donating.” It recommended that people also donate canned goods with pull tabs since members of the homeless community who visit the box may not have access to a can opener. Items in glass containers are also not recommended since they can burst in cold temperatures. Among those who have placed items in the Birdsboro
Blessing Box is local resident JenNae Grant. “I donate because as a community, we need to look out for one another. What we may have in our homes, so many others don’t, and I think that’s taken for granted,” she said. “God has blessed my family with a home and food on our table, and not everybody has that luxury. And the feeling of knowing that somebody will have a full belly brings me peace.” S t . Pa u l ’s L u t h e r a n Church, 548 Old Swede Road, Douglassville, also has its own food pantry box. It is located just outside the main entrance of the church and can be accessed
anytime. Residents in need of food assistance can stop and take what they need. For more information, contact the church office at 610-385-6616. Another community food box has been set up at the West Nantmeal Township Recreation Area, located next to the township building at 455 N. Manor Road (Route 82), Elverson. The box is situated next to the site’s Little Free Library. The food box was provided by It Takes a Village, a nonprofit organization that has established food boxes, also called Blessing Boxes, throughout Chester County and one in Berks

Stream cleanups are popular because it’s a nice way for families to come out and feel like they are making a difference.” “The need is obvious for a program like this,” she added. “(Pennsylvania has) the second most stream miles in America, with Alaska being the first.” Frederick explained that those interested in the program are asked to complete an application and take part in a brief virtual interview. “The interviews are just to get to know you and make sure that our programs can fill the needs you are looking for,” she pointed out. “It’s also a time we can answer any questions that you might have.” Once accepted into the program, volunteers will be asked to pay a one-time fee. “It helps cover our
training expenses, but we don’t want that to be a barrier to anyone. We have scholarships available,” noted Frederick. In addition to helping the environment, Frederick added, volunteers can enjoy the outdoors and meet new friends. “We hope that you find it rewarding and you have fun. It is a great way to meet people with similar interests,” she said. “It is amazing to me that people from so many different fields all have this one unified desire to make the world a little bit better place.” To learn more about the program, visit https:// ex tension.ps u.e du/pro grams/watershed-stewards and scroll down to the news item “Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program Now Accepting A p plications for 2024 Training.” Those with questions may email Frederick at elf145@psu.edu.

Banquet organizers are encouraging attendees to come prepared to take notes, and they have referred to Winand’s talks as “Advanced Deer Hunting 101.” Information presented will be based on field data research conducted by Winand or other wildlife biologists, which is then presented in a way that allows hunters to use scientific results in their own hunting techniques with the goal of harvesting bucks. This year’s dinner menu will include broasted chicken, ham balls, potatoes, peas and carrots, and pie and ice cream for dessert. The Ephrata Area Churches group that sponsors the event includes about a dozen churches located in Ephrata and Akron. There is a fee to attend the dinner, and a limited number of tickets are available. Tickets may be purchased at www.eventbrite.com by searching for “New Holland Sportsman Banquet.” Readers who have questions may call 717-738-0963.
C.J. Winand will be the speaker at the annual Ephrata Area Churches New Holland Sportsman Banquet.
