Vintage “Base Ball” Players Seek Teammates Valentine’s Breakfast Set At Joanna Furnace By Francine Fulton

“It’s a bit like being a kid again - playing a pickup game for the sheer fun and challenge of it,” said team member Isaac “Baker” Smith of Elverson when describing the Brandywine Base Ball Club (BBBC) of West Chester, which is currently seeking players for its upcoming season. The team, which formed in 2013, portrays the game of “base ball” as it was played (and spelled) in the 1860s by competing with other vintage clubs in the Mid-Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League. Smith said he heard about the club after seeing a road sign advertising an upcoming match between the BBBC and the Kennett Square club.

“About 20 years ago, I had read of vintage base ball being played out in Bethpage, Long Island; I was very interested in playing at the time but moved out of the area before I could do so,” he stated. “After a little online research, I found the BBBC website and schedule and came out to watch the second-to-last See Base Ball Club pg 7

Members of the Brandywine Base Ball Club of West Chester, including Jordan “Woody” Rajan (left photo) of Glenmoore and Isaac “Baker” Smith (right photo) of Elverson, encourage prospective players to join them in playing 1860s-style vintage base ball this upcoming season.

Digital Learning from pg 1 The Scholars’ Promise International Education Foundation is sponsoring a new fundraiser - a Digital Learning Day Virtual 5K. As part of the first-time event, community members are invited to walk or run a 5K at the location of their choice anytime between Saturday, Feb. 23, and Sunday, March 3. Proceeds from the registration fees will benefit international scholars who are seeking to earn American high school diplomas online. Dr. Matt Bramucci, the foundation’s executive director, explained that a virtual 5K does not limit participants to a oneday opportunity. “One of the benefits of a virtual 5K is that it’s not isolated to specific day or a specific time so there is a window of time when it can take place,” he said, noting that those who register for the event will be asked to post details about their 5K experience. Bramucci, a resident of Exton, has been teaching online for the past several years. “We partner with local high schools and deliver their academic program online to students who crave an American education but cannot afford to come to America to study,” he explained. “They pay tuition, and we pass (a portion) of the tuition to the schools we partner with as a means of offsetting their budget deficits.” He said his students, who are from Venezuela, Cuba, Kenya and China, are taught in real time. For example, Kenya is eight hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time, so he teaches students at 6 a.m., which is 2 p.m. for them. The educational company formed the nonprofit foundation about six months ago. “Not every child can pay tuition, especially refugee students,” Bramucci stated. “We created the charity so we can accept charitable donations for scholarships for students to study online with us.” Currently, Bramucci is teaching language arts and Algebra I to the international students, who all speak English and are very eager to learn. “I was working with students on the island of Trinidad, and I told them it was snowing. It was terribly exciting for them. They have literally never seen snow in person,” he stated. “They were asking what it feels like when snow is touching your skin. The things we take for granted are so unique and special to them.” Bramucci said that teaching the classes online is extremely gratifying. “My student in Kenya said she hated algebra,” he recalled. “About two weeks ago, she said that I made algebra something she could understand and something she enjoyed doing. That was the highest compliment; that’s

the role of a teacher.” Bramucci had the opportunity to meet a student from China last spring who graduated from International Christian High School in Philadelphia after completing the online course. The student traveled to the area to participate in the graduation ceremonies with the other students. “To shake his

hand was profoundly significant,” Bramucci noted. “It was a powerful moment.” Bramucci credits Tanna Whitton, president of the board of directors of the foundation, as well as the board members, for the success of the program. “(Tanna) and our board of directors are passionate about educa-

tion and about supporting students,” he said. For more information and to register for the 5K, readers may visit ww.facebook.com/ spieducationfoundation or www.spieducationfoundation.org/ events.html. Those who take part in the virtual 5K will receive an event T-shirt. Prizes

will be awarded through random drawing, not based on time. “ We have sponsors for the race, and we have people signed up from multiple countries,” Bramucci said, noting that he and his international students will run or walk the 5K on Digital Learning Day, which will be

observed on Thursday, Feb. 28. “We will have people all around the world participating in the same event at the same time,” he stated. “I even bought brand-new running shoes for this event.” Pictured on front: Dr. Matt

While members of the Neighbors Sharing and Caring women’s group meet weekly at Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown for fellowship and prayer and to hear from guest speakers, the women also take part in activities in the community. On Jan. 29, several members of the group traveled to Sunny Crest Home in Morgantown, a nonprofit personal care facility for adults with disabilities. While there, the women made Valentine’s Day cards with the residents, decorated cupcakes and ended the visit with a card game. Sue Sutter, a member of the Neighbors Caring and Sharing planning committee, said that the ladies try to visit the facility at least once a year. They also visit senior res-

All the players are very friendly and passionate about the history and rules they played by,” added Rajan. “I enjoy dressing the part and re-enacting how games were played back in the 1860s.” The Brandywine Base Ball Club of West Chester plays its home matches at East Goshen Park in West Chester, and games are free for spectators to attend. “If you are looking for some fun, friendly competition with a great group of men and women, come

The club let me play in their season finale the following week, and I’ve been playing since then.” According to the rules of vintage base ball, players dress in historically similar attire and use period-appropriate equipment, including handmade wooden bats and hand-stitched balls made exclusively for vintage play. The ball is slightly bigger than a modern baseball and a little bit softer. In addition, only one ball is used during the entire game. “I love the fast pace of the game,” said Smith. “There’s very little wasted time, so the action just keeps coming.” Unlike modern baseball, play-

Chester County Sheriff Carolyn Bunny Welsh swore in 10 new deputies in January. The group of new deputies achieved a number of firsts, including its size, varied backgrounds, and gender composition: five males and five females. Laniece Edmondson, a Philadelphia native, graduated from the Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy in June 2017. Her career choice was inspired by her mother, a 30year Philadelphia police officer. Edmondson comes to the Chester County Sheriff’s Office from the Darby Borough Police Department, where she assisted with the training of new officers. When she is not working, she is likely to be found somewhere outside or at the gym. She enjoys a host of outdoor pursuits, especially hiking and kayaking. Marjorie Gonzalez and Deborah Holmes were also sworn in. The pair became friends while working as security officers for the Sheriff’s Office and discovered they both aspired to become deputies. To obtain the required Act 120 certification, they enrolled in Delaware County Community College’s yearlong, part-time Police

Academy program, enabling them to continue their day jobs. Holmes is a Coatesville High graduate who studied criminal justice at West Chester University. Gonzalez is a Navy veteran who grew up in Delaware County and attended Haverford High School and Millersville State College. Melissa Harrington grew up in an Air Force family and studied broadcast journalism at Hartwick College. After earning her degree, she worked for a variety of shows, but she ultimately went in a different direction, pursuing a career in law enforcement. Harrington graduated from Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy in 2017 and comes to the Sheriff ’s Office from the Schuylkill Township Police Department. She has worked with Scent Evidence and a nonprofit called Public Safety Dogs Inc., which rescues dogs and trains them to assist agencies with locating missing persons. In her spare time, she enjoys making candles for a business she created. For Jeffrey Hagan, who attended Bayard Rustin High School, a job in the Sheriff ’s Office represents a homecoming of sorts: He was an intern in the office this past summer. Inspired in part by an uncle who spent 20 years with the Philadelphia Police Department, Hagan majored in criminology at Penn State University. He graduated from Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy in December 2018. Hagan participates in a baseball league for adults and plays ice hockey. Brian Jefferson, a native of North Wales, planned a career in automotive technology, receiving training at A. Philip Randolph Career Academy in Philadelphia and the Automotive Training Center in Warminster. He shifted gears after being laid off from a job. Inspired by relatives and television shows, he attended Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy, gradu-

surrounded by people involved in law enforcement - especially her father, who works as a defense attorney. She earned a degree in science from James Madison University in Virginia and interned in the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office before enrolling in Montgomery County Community College’s Police Academy. She graduated in 2017 and accepted a job as a police officer with the Western Berks Regional Police Department. She said she particularly enjoys the aspects of police work that merge her appreciation for scientific precision with her interest in helping others. In her spare time, McMahon is working toward her NRA firearms instructor certification. She also has a martial arts background in jiu-jitsu and Krav Maga and is a competitive distance runner in the area. David Pomroy received his law enforcement inspiration while growing up in a small town in Gloucester County, N.J. The first in his family to pursue a career in police work, he graduated from Rutgers University with a criminal justice degree. He received his Act 120 certification from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in 2017; he is also certified to detect and classify improvised explosive devices. His interest in the Chester County Sheriff’s Office was piqued by its K-9 Unit. In his leisure time, Pomroy enjoys taking walks with his dog and indulging his passion for motorcycles. ating in 2011; he also joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Jefferson comes to the Sheriff ’s Office from the Darby Borough Police Department, where he earned special recognition for rescuing a suicidal subject. In his spare time, he enjoys working out and spending time with his family. Edward Kebbekus is another familiar face to many who frequent the Chester County Justice Center. A native of New Jersey, he attended West Chester University, majoring in criminal justice. He subsequently worked at the George W. Hill Correctional Facility in Delaware County before joining Chester County’s Adult Probation Department in 2012. Kebbekus was eager to explore another aspect of law enforcement, and he credits his family with supporting his decision to attend Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy. After his graduation in 2017, he left Adult Probation and joined the Darby Township Police Department. When he is not working, Kebbekus enjoys traveling, camping, and working out. William Merola took a somewhat circuitous route to the Chester County Sheriff’s Office. He attended Upper Darby High, where Welsh appears on the school’s Wall of Fame, and he majored in leisure/sports studies at Kutztown University and began working in retail. In 2015, several police officers urged him to attend Delaware County Community College’s Police Academy. He graduated in 2015 and began working for the Aldan Borough Police Department and later the Delaware County Sheriff ’s Office, where he sometimes saw a copy of Welsh’s Wall of Fame photo at the Delaware County courthouse. When he heard about an opening in her office, he was eager to apply. The bulk of his spare time goes to family activities. Maura McMahon, a Montgomery County native, grew up

“Our most popular sellers are Thin Mints, followed by Caramel deLites and Peanut Butter Patties,” said Steele. According to www.girlscouts .org, the goal of cookie sales is to teach girls five skills: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. In addition, the Girl Scouts receive a portion of the proceeds from cookie sales to support troop activities. When asked what lessons they were learning while selling cookies, Hanna replied, “Learning about business, handling money and how to multitask.” “Customer service and how to talk to the public,” Meredith added. Additionally, the girls said they had to learn to brave the cold while selling the cookies outdoors. Steele said that the girls will divide their cookie earnings between financing the cost of a camping trip and benefiting a local charity to be determined. Those who visited the booth also had an opportunity to donate to Hometown Heroes, a new program adopted this year by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP). The program will provide cookies to nonprofit organizations in the local community, including shelters, food banks and hospitals, among others. The Twin Valley Service Unit has selected several organizations to receive donated cookies, including the Twin Valley Food Pantry, the Greater Berks Food Bank, Hope Rescue Mission and the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Cookie sales will run through March. Specific locations of cookie sales can be found by entering a ZIP code at www.gsep.org or by downloading the official Girl Scout Cookie Finder App from the website for free.

Romantic sentiments are expressed in many ways come Valentine’s Day. Gifts may include sparkling jewels or personalized prose, but a homemade dessert from the kitchen can win over some hearts as well. Even though chocolate may be expected on Valentine’s Day, tiramisu can be a welcome and delicious alternative. Tiramisu is an Italian layered dessert, and the name translates to “pick me up” or “cheer me up.” Requiring no baking at all, it is an easy treat

The Immaculata Symphony will hold its annual youth concert, themed “Cosmic Classics,” on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 3 p.m. in Alumnae Hall on the campus of Immaculata University, 1145 King Road. The symphony is a university/community organization that goes back to the Immaculata’s founding in 1920. Conducted by Joseph Gehring, the symphony will

The concert will open with the Strauss fanfare made famous by the film “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Other highlights include performances of Franz Joseph Haydn’s Overture to “The World on the Moon,” Gustav Holst’s “Mars” from “The Planets,” Luke Flynn’s “Rift,” and John Williams’ “Star

A cost for the concert has been set for adults, with children under 12 admitted free. Seating is available on a first-come, firstserved basis.
