Finding Permanent
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Whenan unscrupulous dog breeder discovered a blind puppy in the litter, the future of the little dog was grim. However, the Boston terrier, now known as Stevie, is living with a foster family from Humble Hounds Animal Rescue, a foster-based, allbreed, no-kill animal rescue serving Chester County and surrounding areas.
“Stevie was saved from a local breeder who wanted her gone because he could not sell her,” said Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick, the founder of Humble Hounds. “She is safe now.”
Fitzpatrick founded the rescue in 2020 after volunteering at LaMancha Animal Rescue in Coatesville. “I got my experience from LaMancha. I was involved with all aspects of rescue,” she noted.
Currently, Humble Hounds is in need of foster families to care for rescued dogs until their permanent
homes can be found. Further, Fitzpatrick wants to have a building where rescued animals can be housed and where meet-and-greets can be held with potential adopters. She is hoping that a local resident or business owner would be willing to donate a small plot of land for the building.
to build. It’s a big ask, but maybe someone has a soft spot in their hearts for rescued dogs.”
Most of the animals rescued by Humble Hounds are transported to the area from states in the South. “We have helped a few local owner surrenders, but most of the time we pull from the kill shelters down South where (the dogs) are facing euthanasia,” Fitzpatrick said.
build.”
“We need a physical location. Right now, we are hoping and dreaming that it comes to fruition,” Fitzpatrick said. “We don’t have a huge following because (other rescues) have been around for years and years. They have people who donate on a regular basis, and those with a physical location can take in more dogs. Once we get the land, we would start a capital fundraiser
Dogs rescued by the organization are posted at www.petfinder.com. Since its formation, Humble Hounds has rescued 175 dogs and found them permanent homes.
Fitzpatrick noted that Stevie is available for adoption and that the potential adopter should be willing to deal with the special needs of a blind dog. “We took her to one of our vets, who confirmed her blindness is likely congenital; she is not in any pain and is otherwise a healthy pup,” said Fitzpatrick. “Her other senses are heightened. She wants to play with toys and run,

Both girls reported that Thin Mints and Caramel deLites were the best-selling cookies. Other varieties include Lemonades, Peanut Butter Sandwich, Peanut Butter Patties, Trefoils and Adventurefuls, which were introduced in 2022. Adventurefuls are brownie-inspired cookies with caramel-flavored crème and a touch of sea salt.
“(The girls’) favorite (cookie) changes every time you ask,” said Katie. “They like them all.”
Those who visit the booths also have an opportunity to donate cookies to Hometown Heroes, a program adopted in 2019 by GSEP. In the Twin Valley area, cookies will go to the Twin Valley Food Pantry, Hope Rescue Mission and Helping Harvest (formerly the Greater Berks Food Bank).
According to www.gsep.org, Girl Scouts are learning five skills when selling cookies: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.
“They are learning money management, people skills and social skills because they learn how to talk to people and interact with people and goal setting,” said Rebecca, who noted that the troop is working toward a trip to Great Wolf Lodge in

In addition to troop activities, the Scouts take part in community service projects, including volunteering at Historic Joanna Furnace during the Fall Festival. “They help set up at the festival and they helped with scarecrow making,” said Katie.

Berks County Take the Lead Honoree by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP).
According to www.gsep.org, Take the Lead recognizes woman leaders from the community who serve as positive role models for girls and promote the Girl Scout values of courage, confidence and character.
Dodge, a graduate of OJR High School and West Chester University, is president and executive producer at VA Productions Inc., which she founded 29 years ago after being laid off from another production company in the 1990s.
As part of the Take the Lead awards program, Girl Scouts of high school age are paired with an honoree whom
they shadow for a day to learn about a potential career. “I (plan) to bring her back to my video production studio and give her an assignment to talk about places she would like to see in the world and then put her in front of a green screen (where she will be pictured) with the Eiffel Tower or any place she wants to be,” Dodge explained. “I will have her see what it is like behind the camera and get experience with editing.”
The Scouts will discuss their experiences and deliver presentations at the Take the Lead awards ceremony, set for Wednesday, April 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. at DoubleTree by Hilton in Reading.
“At the awards night, I don’t get up to speak. She will speak about me and her day with me. The whole night will be driven by girls,” Dodge said, noting that Girl Scouts will serve as presenters, masters of ceremonies, event hosts and members of a chorus.
Dodge, who has achieved many accomplishments throughout her career, currently serves as the production manager for the Reading Symphony Orchestra and has served as a committee or board member for organizations such as the John Paul II Center for Special Learning, Reading Musical Foundation, Leadership Berks, Olivet Boys & Girls Club, Bethany Children’s Home and GSEP. She also is a Lifetime Girl Scout.
She also makes jewelry and has turned this hobby into a way to raise money for charity. The proceeds from her custom-made jewelry have contributed to her “Gifts That Give Back Charitable Fund,” which was administered through the Berks County Community Foundation.
One of her programs is Princess With a Purpose, which she offers at Bethany Children’s Home. “It is a selfesteem program for young girls. It talks about how you picture a Disney
princess, but that is not what being a princess is about, It’s about helping others and having a good heart and believing in yourself,” noted Dodge. “I give (the girls) a plaque and a little tiara, and we make jewelry. Seeing the faces of the young women I interact with makes my day.”

Dog-Focused 4-H Club To Meet
The Chester County To Love a Canine 4-H Club will begin meeting on Sunday, Feb. 19, in Malvern. The yearround club will focus on the education of youths who are interested in learning all there is to know about dogs.
The vision is to teach members the rescue world from the ground up with topics like why dogs need rescue, where rescue dogs come from, and more. Members will expand their interests in dogs through career explo-
ration and hands-on experiences related to grooming, following professional advice for care, using veterinary information and training, keeping record books, and more.
This club is open to youths ages 8 to 18. Members will be required to attend and participate in meetings regularly, complete a project book, plan and conduct community service projects, and learn and practice leadership skills. The 4-H members will also
participate in a presentation or demonstration within the club and submit projects to be judged at the Chester County 4-H Fair.
If interested, register at https://4h.zsuite.org, and select the To Love a Canine 4-H Club during the enrollment process. For further information on the Chester County 4-H program, contact the Penn State Extension Office at chesterext@psu.edu or 610-696-3500.
