TVHS to host Jazz in the Valley BY FRANCINE FULTON
The community is invited to enjoy an evening of jazz as the Music Boosters of Twin Valley in conjunction with band director Robert Bennett host Jazz in the Valley, a jazz band festival, on Friday, Feb. 16, beginning at 6 p.m. at Twin Valley High School (TVHS). In addition to the music, attendees will have an opportunity to purchase dinner and there will be a chance to win prizes. TVHS merchandise will also be for sale.
Jazz in the Valley will feature a competition between eight groups. In addition to the host band, other local high schools that will participate are Radnor, Upper Darby, Hempfield and Wilson high schools along with Pottsgrove High School, which will send two jazz bands to the event. Also participating will be Cherry Hill East High school from Cherry Hill, N.J. According to Cheryl Skoniczin, president of the Music Boosters of Twin Valley, jazz bands are groups of students who perform music in a big band style. Unlike See Jazz in the Valley pg 4

on the computer using computer aided design (CAD) software. Then they will usually fabricate the robot components out of plastic using 3D printers,” he explained. “These initial prototypes help them test and interact with the parts, so they can make sure it’s exactly the way they want it.” He noted that if the team members decide they want to modify the part, they will go back to the computer and modify it in the CAD program, then repeat the prototyping process until the part is exactly the way they want it. “Once they have decided on their final design, they will 3D print it again,” Tim noted. Certain elements of the robots from previous years may be used to construct the new one. “During the design process, we look at what has worked in previous years. There are certain elements of the game that are recycled.

Vendors are encouraged to begin the registration process by completing an application at www.facebook.com/Birdsboro FarmersMarket. Local farmers selling produce, as well as crafters and artisans, are invited to take part. “(Items for sale) must be locally sourced. (For example), we have a honey vendor. He is a beekeeper and produces his own honey,” explained board president Christen Thompson. “When it comes to crafts, it has to be handmade and produced by (the vendor). ombining their creativity and knowledge of computer programming, design and construction, members of the Berks County -based K ardia Robotics team recently qualified to complete at the state FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) championship event to be held in March at Saucon Valley Middle School in Hellertown. To advance to states, the team competed at the FTC state qualifier held in January at McCaskey East High School in Lancaster. Kardia Robotics is composed o f middle and hig h s cho ol students who are part of the Kardia Learning Center, a Christian homeschool group. As part of the competition, FTC teams design, build and operate a robot that is created to complete a specific task. Each year’s competition task is
different. Past tasks have included having the robot use a claw to stack objects. This year, the game revolves around pixels, which are small, hexagonal-shaped game pieces that come in various colors. “They release the game around September every year, and competitions start in December,” noted 11th-grader Brandon Tam, one of the lead robot designers. “The name of this year’s competition is Centerstage. Basically, the game revolves around stacking game elements called pixels on a vertical board. You are trying to make patterns and you get points for them depending on the colors of the pixels.” Tim Tam, one of the team coaches, explained that Brandon and other members of the design team creatively come up with robot design concepts to compete in the game. “They usually start with designing the robot components

what they sell.” She added that home-based business vendors are not permitted. Those who shop at the market generally will find a variety of plants, flowers, canned and pickled goods, homemade baked goods and bread, tea and coffee, pet products, jewelry, jams and jellies, wine and more. Several local farms offer fresh fruits and vegetables. Community organizations and church groups are also represented, and there are generally local food trucks on hand as well. The market sometimes features live musical entertainment, and craft activities are offered for children. Thompson said it is never too early to start planning for the market’s opening. “People start asking me (about the market) in November. A lot of vendors do multiple markets,” she noted. “We announce in January what we are doing, and we post an application. A lot of (farmers) plan their season. They also plan what they are going to grow this time of year and start ordering seeds.” Thompson would like to see old vendors return to the market as well as new vendors looking for a new venue to sell their products. “Our ultimate goal is to have enough selection (for shoppers). We really want to bring in the vendors this year,” she stated.

“I like seeing smiles on people’s faces,” said Natalie Francis, when explaining why she enjoys selling Girl Scout Cookies to the community. She noted that her favorite is Caramel Chocolate Chip. Natalie and fellow Girl Scouts Juniper Boerlin and Oakley Bamford, members of Brownie Troop 1654 from Robeson Elementary Center, were busy on a recent Saturday at the cookie booth located inside Lowe’s Home Improvement in the Morgantown Crossings shopping center. The booth was open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with Scouts from different troops working in two-hour shifts. The Scouts were accompanied by troop leader Loni Francis and parent volunteer Macall Bamford, who reported that Thin Mints were the most frequently purchased cookie that day. Other varieties include Adventurefuls, which

Robotics team from pg 1 You always need wheels and certain motors, so a lot of that we can reuse,” Brandon pointed out. “This year, we did make the decision to have a mostly new robot because old hardware gets outdated. We were using old motors. This year was a change for us.” Once members of the design team complete their design and building process, they hand the robot over to the programming team, which programs the robot using the Java programming language. Another part of the team is the marketing committee, which is responsible for managing the team website and Instagram account and overseeing outreach programs at local schools. For example, the team visited High Point Baptist Academy in Geigertown to help the school start its own robotics team. Brandon’s sister, Naomi, an eighth-grader, is a member of

the marketing team. “There is a lot of stuff that happens outside (competition),” she said. “We are organizing a judges’ presentation, which is where we talk about our team and what we do. We also get sponsorships for our team. “At competition, every team has to prepare an engineering portfolio. There we talk about the evolution of the robot and the outreach opportunities that our team has held and the benefits of FIRST.” Next up for the team is a competition to be held at Coatesville Area Senior High School on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17 and 18. “Since
we already advanced (to states), we are going to get more practice at the competition and compete with other teams and try and win more team awards,” Brandon said. Four teams from states will advance to the FIRST Tech Championship to be held in April in Houston. The local team has never competed at this event but would like this year to be the first time. “We don’t want to have too high expectations, but we would be happy if we do go,” Brandon said. To learn more about Kardia Learning Center and the robotics team, visit www.kardialearning center.org.
Jazz in the Valley from pg 1 a high school marching band, there are fewer members in a jazz band, and jazz band musicians wear formal attire. “A jazz band is a smaller group of students,” she explained. “It has a trombone section, a trumpet section, saxophones and a rhythm section, which includes keyboards and drums and sometimes a guitar. There are 20 to 25 kids in each group. There are no flutes and clarinets.” At the upcoming event, the student musicians will be judged on their performances. “The groups will get a rating of how they did, plus best soloist and best trombone, trumpet and
saxophone and rhythm section (will be awarded),” said Skoniczin. “They will do that at the end of the night. They will call a representative from each band up on the stage and the judges will dole out the awards.” Skoniczin pointed out that one of the jazz bands from Pottsgrove High School will go on stage first at 6 p.m. and then bands will perform in succession every 25 minutes. There will be an intermission about 7:40 p.m. The TVHS jazz band will be the final performer at 9:10 p.m., and the event should conclude by 9:45 p.m. Food concessions will be available in the lobby throughout See Jazz in the Valley pg 5
