Senior League Invites Men To “Play Ball!” By Francine Fulton

Men age 60 and over who enjoy playing softball and are not quite ready to give up the game are invited to join the Brandywine Valley Senior Softball Association (BVSSA), which is currently enrolling players for the 2019 spring and summer season. BVSSA is registered with the Amateur Softball Association (ASA), and eligible players may turn age 60 anytime during 2019. The men’s slow-pitch softball teams follow the rules of senior softball, which means that bunting and stealing bases are not permitted. Other safety measures have also been put into place, according to BVSSA commissioner John Lundell. “We have a double first

base. There is an inside bag and an outside bag. The runner goes to the outside bag so that he does not collide with the first baseman,” explained Lundell. “We also have a double home plate. When you run down the third-base line, the second home plate is off to the right, so there is no interference with the catcher.” Lundell noted that players in the league come from the tri-state area, which includes Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. “Players come from Delaware County; Berks County, including Reading; and from Chester County, including the West Chester area, Downingtown, Coatesville and Honey Brook,” he said. Players range in age from 60 to their 90s. “There are guys this

year who will turn 89 and are still playing,” Lundell noted. “Our oldest player was 96.” New players must attend one of the two skill analysis sessions, which will be held on Thursday and Friday, March 28 and 29, from noon to 2 p.m. at United Sports Complex, 1426 Marshallton Thorndale Road, Downingtown. “Basically, we have a guy go out and we hit ground balls to him, and we see how he runs, catches and fields the ball. That will determine which division he competes in,” Lundell said. “The gold division is more competitive. They are really good players who do especially well for their age. The silver division is more relaxed. They are good ballplayers, but their skills have diminished. The managers See Softball League pg 9

stake in the choice of Stanley Praimnath as a speaker for the seventh annual ROFM banquet, to be held at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, on Thursday, March 21. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Jakubowski met Praimnath in 2003, when Jakubowski had been a student in Teen Challenge for about five months. “I was trying to figure out who God is,” said Jakubowski, who said that he came to the program as an argumentative atheist. When Praimnath spoke at a Teen Challenge chapel gathering, Jakubowski and his fellow students were riveted by Praimnath’s tale of surviving the 9/11 World Trade Center attack. “When Stanley came and started to tell his story, you could hear a pin drop,” said Jakubowski. “He told his heroic and faithful (account of escaping) out of the offices that the plane actually hit.” See 9/11 Survivor pg 7

Chester County Commissioner Terence Farrell, who first brought the idea of the Healthiest Cities and Counties Challenge to Chester County, cited various benefits of walking, such as improving mental health, reducing chronic disease risks and burning calories. One of the key components of the WalkWorks ChesCo! program is the specially designed website that tallies all steps taken by residents who register to participate. The website, www.chesco.org/walkworks, syncs with most devices and mobile apps that already track steps, and it also allows users to convert other physical exercise into steps to be manually added. According to Commissioner Michelle Kichline, more physical activities have been added to the website so that everyone registered can convert more activities into steps. These include swimming,

At their recent Sunshine Meeting public work session, the Chester County commissioners received an update from Chester County Health Department director Jeanne Casner announcing a milestone in the WalkWorks ChesCo! challenge. Since the launch of WalkWorks in April 2017, Chester County residents have registered more than 4 billion steps in the program. WalkWorks ChesCo! is a program that aims to promote, educate and empower county residents to adopt a healthier lifestyle one step at a time by creating more places for walking, supporting and promoting walking groups, coordinating walking challenges and creating a website that allows everyone to track and tally their steps. What began as the county’s response to the national Healthiest Cities and Counties Challenge has grown into a program that engages county residents of all ages and that has been replicated by communities in other states. Throughout 2018, WalkWorks ChesCo! participants were motivated by 18 competitions,

All items at the sale will be provided by parish members and the community. “Everything is donated,” said Leigh Pavoni, St. Peter’s Preschool director. “Every dollar that we make will go to the preschool. We have a play-based school that has been around for 30 years.” The community may donate items for the rummage sale beginning on Sunday, March 3, from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. after the Sunday service. Donations will also be accepted on Monday, March 4, through Friday, March 8, from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m. “We can accept anything Goodwill or Purple Heart can accept. So, no mattresses, no large appliances, no large exercise equipment, no old TVs or computer monitors and no cribs,” Pavoni said. “We will sort, label and price all week as people continue to bring stuff, and, obviously, pricing will be low. We plan on having at least 20 tables.” She said the sale, which began in 2012, is back this year after a one-year break. “The church parishioners love the sale. They love being able to help the preschool,” Pavoni remarked. “We have parents who volunteer and our retired grandfathers’ group at the church, who will help set up the tables. We have great relationship with the church.” Unsold rummage sale items will be taken to GreenDrop in Frazer, and old bedding will be donated to local animal rescues. St. Peter’s Preschool, which is open weekdays during the school year from 9 to 11:45 a.m., offers programs for children age 2 and a half up to prekindergartners. Prekindergarten students must be age 4 by the kindergarten cutoff date of their home school districts. Pavoni explained that the class for children who are 2 and a half meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with a 3-year-old class on Mondays to Thursdays and prekindergarten on Mondays through Fridays. Also offered are an optional enrichment program and Lunch Bunch.

For the second consecutive year, people with special needs were invited to take part in the Night to Shine prom-style event hosted by Freedom Life Church at the Shady Maple Banquet Facility in East Earl. At the event on Feb. 8, there were 65 honored guests in attendance, along with approximately 85 parents and caregivers. Nearly 200 volunteers from Freedom Life Church and the surrounding community made the event possible through planning, organizing and volunteering throughout the evening. Guests who entered the promlike event were greeted by church volunteers and were presented with a corsage or boutonniere. Then, they had their photo taken with an assigned buddy who stayed with them through the evening. After walking the red carpet while being cheered on by the crowd and the friendly “paparazzi,” attendees received a crown from the reigning Miss Solanco, Noelle Schneider.

All attendees then enjoyed dinner and the opportunity to dance to music provided by a disc jockey. Other activities included karaoke and limousine rides. Night to Shine, an event for people with developmental disabilities, is sponsored annually by the Tim Tebow Foundation. Tebow attends various Night to Shine events throughout the world as a surprise to attendees. This year, he visited events in Ecuador and Mexico, among others. During a video message that was shown at the start of the festivities, Tebow said that the Night to Shine events are held at more than 600 locations around the world. “Tonight it’s all about you. It is my honor right now to crown every single one of you as king and queen of the prom,” Tebow stated in the video. Greeting guests at the local Night to Shine event was Stacey McNutt, event chair, and Freedom Life Church lead pastor Sam Masteller, who also provided a prayer before the meal. “This is a night of celebration. We pray that every single one of our guests feels honored and loved

and cared for,” he stated. “We celebrate with people all over the country and in all parts of the world.” Angie Dearolf, the church’s communications director, noted that in preparation for the event, guests were invited to choose free gowns, suits, shoes and accessories offered during a boutique day held at Freedom Life in Christiana. Female attendees were also invited to attend the prom early to receive complimentary hair and makeup services, as well as manicures. There was also a shoe shine station for the young men. “It’s an incredible honor for us to offer this opportunity to the community,” said Dearolf. “Our teams absolutely love this event and meeting so many wonderful people.” At the end of the evening, the guests received a gift bag, which included a framed photograph of them with their buddies Freedom Life Church’s central office is located at 447 Noble Road, Christiana. Church groups meet for Sunday worship at Octorara High School, 228 Highland Road, Atglen; Rainbow Elementary School, 1113 W. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville; and Providence Elementary School, 137 Truce Road, New Providence. There is also a church in Milesburg, Centre County. Following the chapel meeting, Jakubowski introduced himself to Praimnath and shared his own story. “I said, ‘If your faith got you through (9/11), it can get me through Teen Challenge,’” said Jakubowski. “He said (that) I was absolutely right,” shared Jakubowski. “He said, ‘Stay the course.’” The pair stayed in touch over the years, and when Jakubowski was considering speakers, he contacted his friend. “I called Stanley without a lot of notice,” said Jakubowski. “I said, ‘The Lord put you on my heart (for this event). Are you available?’” Praimnath responded that he would make it work. “He is such a humble guy,” said Jakubowski. Praimnath was evacuated from his 81st-floor office in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, when Flight 11 struck the North Tower. When told by security that the South Tower was secured, he returned to his office in time to see United Airlines Flight 175 heading for his window. “He will vividly remind everyone of what we experienced as a nation and our resiliency,” said Jakubowski, who added that Prainmath will also expound on how God was his source of survival and rescue. ROFM is a faith-based, Christcentered discipleship program for men who struggle with addictions. Jakubowski said that some of ROFM’s current students will give their testimonies at the banquet, and students will perform a song or two. When Jakubowski joined ROFM in July 2018, the ministry was in the process of making a change by preparing to move to a former bank call center at 113 Rancks Church Road, Blue Ball. The location is currently in the process of being remodeled for the ministry. Currently, ROFM can house up to 15 men in buildings located along Route 23 in Blue Ball. The new building will be able to accommodate 50 men, and although ROFM may eventually house that many clients, it is not the initial goal of the move. Jakubowski will give an update on the status of the move, noting that ROFM hopes to have occupancy by March and to open a thrift store by late spring or early summer. The change will mean ROFM will need more volunteers, especially to help run the thrift store. “We are looking for volunteers for the thrift store (and to serve as) drivers, teachers, and mentors,” said Jakubowski. There is no charge to attend the banquet, but individuals who would like to attend are asked to register to attend by Thursday, March 14, by calling 717-3515680 or 717-673-2119 or emailing joel@rofm.org. Table sponsorships for the banquet are available for businesses or individuals. A freewill offering will be received. Readers who would like more information about ROFM may visit www.rofm.org.

Resource Fair from pg 1 struggling with bullying.” To date, 28 agencies have planned to set up booths at the event. A food truck will be located on-site so that visitors can purchase lunch or snacks. Yoga demonstrations will be offered at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m., and QPR (Question. Persuade. Refer.) suicide prevention training will take place at 1 p.m. “(The training covers) how to recognize people who are at-risk and how to talk to them and how to persuade them to seek help,” explained O’Connell. “It’s practical information you can use for a variety of settings. It teaches you to talk to someone who is struggling and how to help them. It’s not about talking someone off a ledge. It’s about telling them you care for them and (helping them know) where they would go for help.” To register for the QPR training, readers may visit www.apathtohope.org and choose “More” on the home page. Throughout the resource fair, attendees will also have an opportunity to win artwork that

was created by local students. Winners will be announced at 3:45 p.m. “Area high school students submitted art (focused) on their thoughts and interpretation of mental health. I have 30 pieces from Villa Mara Academy alone,” said O’Connell. “The art will be in the hallways and people can buy tickets, and we will pick a winning ticket at the end of the day. The (paintings) are not all doom and gloom; they are hopeful. It will be neat to see what the students come up with and what their ideas are.” O’Connell founded A Path to Hope in September 2018 after a family member encountered difficulties in trying to get help with a mental wellness issue. She said that she wanted to make that process easier for others, as well as bring awareness to and lessen the stigma surrounding mental illness. Since the nonprofit’s formation, O’Connell has sponsored mental health talks at LMS and held a presentation for the school’s home and school association, where she

talked about A Path to Hope and the organization’s website, www.apathtohope.org, which lists area providers. The website, which will be displayed on a screen during the upcoming STEPS Fair, also includes information about the differences between providers, such as a psychiatrist and a counselor. “There is also a section where people can learn about the different types of therapy - outpatient, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs,” O’Connell said. “I envision (A Path to Hope) as a matchmaker between those who offer services and those who need them,” said O’Connell. “Nobody should feel like they’re alone in their suffering, and A Path to Hope aims to eliminate the stress and struggle of finding a professional who offers the services somebody needs when they need them.” For more information about the organization or the resource fair, readers may call 484-388-6556, email hollyoconnell@apathto hope.org or visit the organization’s website or www.facebook.com /apathtohope.

Softball League from pg 1 determine which division (a player) would fit in.” The gold division will play on Mondays and Wednesdays and the silver division will play on Tuesdays and Thursdays from mid-April through July at fields located in the West Chester area. Game time is at 10 a.m. “We play nine innings,” Lundell noted. “Sometimes we play doubleheaders. If a game gets rained out, you would play that team in two seven-inning games.” Lundell say that many of the team members play softball yearround. “We are constantly playing. Our spring/summer league ends in July and then we have pickup games, and our fall league goes from September to November,” he said, noting that several players travel to play in warmer climates during the winter. “Some are in Florida playing softball right now. They leave after the holidays and stay in Florida and return in April right before the season.” The guiding principles of the BVSSA are player safety, fun, excellent competition through team parity within divisions and healthy and abiding respect for the game and its rules with continuous improvement of the quality of play. “Everyone is there to have a good time. If we’re not playing softball, most of the guys in the league get together to go golfing,” Lundell said. “Guys have barbecues and parties at the end of the season.”

Gov. Tom Wolf and Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding helped unveil the Pennsylvania Farm Show butter sculpture, carved from a half-ton of butter and depicting the Choose PA Dairy “Find Your Power” campaign. The sculpture, a longtime Farm Show staple, aimed to encourage Pennsylvanians to support the state’s dairy industry. The sculpture, sponsored by American Dairy Association North East (ADANE), featured several individuals donning superhero capes, including an athlete, a soldier, a doctor, a firefighter, and a dairy farmer. The sculptors began work in mid-December to craft the work of art from butter donated by Land O’ Lakes in Carlisle. The Pennsylvania Farm Show, known to be the nation’s largest indoor agricultural event, features 12,000 competitive exhibits, more than 5,200 of which are animal competitions, plus 300 commercial exhibitors. The 103rd show ran from Jan. 5 to 12.

Internationally known artist Adrian Martinez will present a lecture, titled “Adrian Martinez From the White House to Historic Yellow Springs - An Artistic Journey,” on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the second-floor gallery of the Lincoln Building in Historic Yellow Springs (HYS), 1685 Art School Road, Chester Springs. The program will be the first in a new art lecture series being planned at HYS. Martinez explained that when he was first invited to present the lecture, he agreed to discuss his artwork, including how he created art for the White House, working with President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura. After meeting with HYS executive director Karen Walter and the board of directors, however, he decided to tailor his traditional lecture to show parallels between the phases of his life and the history of HYS. “We just mutually saw how this would become a much more specific-to-the-situation kind of

lecture,” he said. “They were inspiring to me.” Martinez said that his life experiences have been diverse, noting that the village of HYS also has been utilized for different purposes throughout history. HYS was once a spa village where people bathed in the yellow springs. During the American Revolution, George Washington commissioned a hospital to be built in the village. HYS was also home to the Chester Springs Soldiers’ Orphan School, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Country School and Good News Productions, a film studio. “I saw some art shows (in Historic Yellow Springs), but I never realized it was actually a place with consecutive phases that are discontinuous; they start and stop,” said Martinez, noting that in addition to art, his career has included working in the theater, at a museum and in horticulture. “There is an analogy between my art career and the history of Yellow Springs. We are at a crossroads, (having) wound up at the

same place at the same time.” Both artists and non-artists are invited to attend the upcoming lecture, which will feature a PowerPoint presentation of Martinez’s paintings and a questionand-answer session. “It will be a lively presentation. It will be a theatrical presentation as well,” said Martinez. “The PowerPoint presentation will be mostly of my work. Those pictures - they are me. I am what I do.” He said one of his goals is to introduce people to HYS, particularly those who have never visited in the past. “I am trying to bring people to Yellow Springs. (The lecture will be) my vision and the vision of Historic Yellow Springs,” Martinez commented. “The lecture was going to be me talking about art, but now that we have this connection, I will also be looking into the 21st century for both of us - me and my work and Historic Yellow Springs.” Martinez, an artist, teacher and lecturer, was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Washington. He received degrees from the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, Md.; St. Martins School of Art in London, England; and Purdue University in Indiana. His work has been exhibited in New York; Pennsylvania; Turkey; Texas; Washington, D.C.; Maryland; Delaware; Indiana; California; and London, England. In 2007, President Bush and Laura Bush commissioned him to paint two large land-

Churches Plan Annual Sportsmen’s Banquet By Ann Mead Ash

Jim Hertzler, chair of the committee of Ephrata- and Akronarea churches that are planning the group’s 15th annual sportsmen’s banquet, reached back into his own hunting history when discussing the topic of this year’s event. “(Speaker Steve Sorensen) will talk about hunting boots on the ground,” said Hertzler. “Not

(hunting deer) from tree stands, but walking and stalking.” Hertzler noted that he has hunted deer from both locations. “I enjoy hunting from tree stands, but I didn’t always,” he said. “I used to walk and go slow and keep my eyes open, and it’s a different approach to deer hunting.” Last year, due to the demand for tickets, the event was expanded to two nights, and that format

“The Everyday Hunter,” appears in a number of western Pennsylvania newspapers. He is also a popular speaker who presents programs on wild turkey hunting and eastern coyote hunting, among others. Sorensen is also a believer in Christ, which is one reason he was chosen to speak at the event. “Our goal is to introduce people to Jesus Christ through their interest in the outdoors,” noted Hertzler, who added that Sorensen will end his talk with his personal testimony. According to Hertzler, about 14 vendors will be on hand with displays when the doors open. Most of the vendors represent local businesses that sell hunting and fishing equipment. One taxidermist will be on hand, and one vendor who sells jewelry will take part. “There are women who come to the meal, and (the jewelry) is something for them (to see),” said Hertzler, who added that husbands who attend sometimes purchase a piece of jewelry for their wives.

This year, Sorensen will present “The Path to Your Next Mature Whitetail,” drawing on his work for magazines that focus on deer hunting. Sorensen will discuss hunters who bring home especially large bucks and utilize a special test to help audience members discover the locations of the biggest whitetails. New Student Loan Program Posted Prospective college students who may be applying for financial aid this year are encouraged to consider the new PA Forward Student Loan Program. The PA Forward State Grant Program provides low-cost, alternative student loans for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as loans for parent borrowers. The program is designed to complement other forms of student aid, such as the PA State Grant Program and low-cost federal loans. Pennsylvania students who need help paying for college after exhausting their eligibility for gift aid and low-cost federal student loans are encouraged to apply. Additionally, borrowers who are in repayment and want to combine their debt after graduation to outstanding student debts and achieve a lower monthly payment can benefit from a PA Forward Refinance Loan. PHEAA is the lender and servicer of the loans, with taxexempt financing provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. PA Forward participants can borrow up to the total cost of attendance with competitively low interest rates. There are immediate credit approvals and flexible repayment options, with no application or origination fees. Borrowers can get discounted interest rates by enrolling in an automatic direct debit repayment

program and simply by graduating. Borrowers can receive a .25 percent interest rate reduction for enrolling in an automatic direct debit program and an additional .50 percent interest rate reduction for achieving successful graduation. Borrowers also benefit from a six-month grace period after graduation before the first payment is due. This allows borrowers time to get their finances in order, including time to find a job, before repayment begins. Borrowers who take full advantage of the program’s benefits could save thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. PHEAA encourages students and their families to exhaust all eligibility for grants and scholarships before considering a student loan. When borrowing is necessary, students should first apply for low-cost federal student loans before turning to an alternative student loan, which may have higher interest rates. To help students make informed choices about their higher education funding plans that can prevent unnecessary or excessive borrowing, PHEAA created www.mysmartborrowing.org. This free resource helps users understand how different career, school, and financial decisions made during the college planning process can influence their total cost of an education and their ability to repay any student loans after graduation.
