two programs in March. “A Stitch in Time: A History of Quilting” will be offered on Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m. in the site’s DeTurk Education Center. Rescue continues to find homes for cats and kittens
A
fter forming Calla’s Critter Rescue in May of 2021, Twin Valley High School alumna Calla Gibson of Elverson has continued her work to save unwanted cats and kittens, placing them in foster care until their forever homes can be found. “In 2023, we hit over 100 adoptions,” Calla repor ted. “ We’ve come a long way. We are really getting ourselves out there.” Calla is also the head kennel manager and adoption manager at Diane ’s Pet Supplies and Adoption Center in Pottstown. She is assisted in the rescue by her mom, Stephanie Gibson, who is a pet groomer, veterinary
technician and foster. Calla noted that the number of cats and kittens that have been surrendered has increased post-pandemic. “It’s a slow adoption time for cats. I have
“We truly care about these cats and where they go.” been talking to all of my rescue partners for the past six months, and there are not as many adoptions as last year at this time,” she stated. “It may be because everyone is going back to work. When everyone was at home they adopted animals, and many
of them are relinquishing them.” She noted that the rescue recently completed a TNVR - trap, neuter, vaccinate, release - project. “We successfully spayed/neutered, vaccinated, vetted, ear tipped and released 27 cats from Sunny High Farm in Pottstown, with the help of Forgotten Cats and Mac’s Fund,” said Calla. “We were offered a grant for the project.” Additional fosters and adopters are needed. “We currently have about 45 young cats and adults available for adoption,” Calla stated. “We are trying to limit taking in (cats) right now so we can get some more (adopted). I’m not into overcrowding. It’s not good for the cats or healthy for them. We can’t take more in if some don’t get adopted.” See Rescue pg 4

Daniel Boone from pg 1 the importance of quilts, how to preserve old quilts and how the fabrics and designs used in quilts have changed over the course of history. There is no fee to attend the program, and reservations are not required. In addition, a quilt making workshop will be presented on Saturday, March 16, from 9 a.m. to noon in the DeTurk Education Center. The workshop, led by the Hopewell Quilters, is open to people of all skill levels, including those who wanted to learn the art of quilting. Participants will make a potholder to take home. A fee will be charged for the workshop, and space is limited. Registration is required by emailing thedaniel boonehomestead@gmail.com or calling 610-582-4900. The Hopewell Quilters are a group of quilting enthusiasts who primarily demonstrate quilting at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Elverson. “The Hopewell Quilters are volunteers. We demonstrate quilting on Fridays March through October and are at special event days at Daniel Boone Homestead,” Hughes noted. “We have been doing some special events at Hopewell as well. We started quilting together about 18 years ago.” Hughes added that while members of the group are quilting at Hopewell on Friday afternoons in the park, visitors are invited to make their own stitches on a practice piece of cloth. Members are also hand to talk about quilting with visitors. To learn more about the group, visit www.facebook.com and search for “Hopewell Quilters.” A Charter Day Open House event

celebrating Pennsylvania’s 343rd birthday will take place at Daniel Boone Homestead on Sunday, March 10, from noon to 4 p.m. The event is designed to celebrate the time when England’s King Charles II granted William Penn the charter to create Pennsylvania on March 12, 1681. At Daniel Boone Homestead, the living history event will feature re-enactors demonstrating 18-century skills, including gunsmithing, leatherworking and blacksmithing. Craft and specialty food vendors as well as food trucks and concessions will be open during the day. Volunteers will also cook a meal over the hearth in the kitchen. According to Amanda Machik, manager of site events and programs, the end of winter or the beginning of spring at the homestead was called “the hungry times” or “six weeks of want.” “It was the end of winter, and they didn’t have a lot left as far as food goes, which is literally where they got the phrase, ‘Scrape the bottom of the barrel,’” she stated. “Meats that they butchered and preserved in the fall were almost gone. Produce and root vegetables were extremely limited. For those ‘six weeks of want’ it was a hodgepodge of what they could throw together.” Fortunately, she noted, cooks were able to add more eggs, milk, cheese and butter to their meals. “When spring started, the animals started to produce more,” said Machik. “The hens increased their egg laying and the family cow would produce more milk.” Buildings in the historic area that will be open for viewing on Charter Day will include the Boone House, smokehouse, blacksmith shop, homestead barn and Bertolet log house. Children will be able to enjoy Colonial toys and games. The Bertolet sawmill will also be in operation throughout the day. Sawmill demonstrations will take place at 1 and 3 p.m. There is no admission fee for Charter Day, but donations are welcome. No pets, with the exception of service animals, are permitted on the site, and there is no smoking.

GriefShare from pg 1 features a 30-minute video on a grief-related topic that includes real-life stories of people who have experienced loss, as well as advice from experts in the field. Participants are asked to purchase a workbook, which corresponds to the video. “You can come anytime and people that came before and need a ‘tune-up’ can show up again,” stated Kimball, noting that the program was offered previously at the church last fall. “We normally see people who have lost a spouse, but we have also had parents who have lost children.” He said that people are encouraged to share their feelings during the meeting, but it is not necessary. “People are at different places in their grief journey. We never put pressure on anybody. If they want to share, they can,” Kimball said. “If someone is quiet, we might ask them what they are thinking. We will ask open-ended questions to foster communication.”
Prior to offering GriefShare at the church, Kimball attended the program at Tel Hai after receiving permission from Hicks, who is also his friend. “I wanted to introduce it to our church, and I observed,” he stated. “I got the flavor of it and that helped me in terms of getting it going in our church and training our volunteers.” To register for the program at Brick Lane Community Church, email griefshare@brick52.org or visit www.griefshare.org/ groups/184325. Walk-ins will also be welcome. Beverages, including coffee and tea, will be provided. At Tel Hai, the meetings are open to people in the community as well as Tel Hel residents. “We sit around a table and give people an opportunity to introduce themselves and tell a little bit of their story,” Hicks explained. “Then, we talk about the video and the lesson and give people an opportunity to share and ask questions and give responses

various stages in grief as time passes. “The impact is different. For those who come quickly after they lost a loved one, they are in a great deal of shock,” Hicks shared. “They get encouragement and help through the group, but when they come back a second time, they are much more in tune to discover things that can help them. Also, when they share their stories, that is an encouragement to someone who has recently lost someone.” The Tel Hai GriefShare sessions are held in the Scalies Private Dining Room at StoneCroft, 4000 Tree Line Drive, Honey Brook. Attendees may purchase food at a cafe located next to the dining room before or after the meeting. For more information about the GriefShare session at Tel Hai or to register, visit www.griefshare.org/ groups/178753. Walk-ins will also be welcome. Those with questions may contact Hicks at dhicks@telhai.org or 610-273-9333, ext. 2443.

and discuss where they are in their grief journey.” The corresponding workbook, he noted, includes an outline where people can write notes about the videos. Since GriefShare is a Christian-based program, Bible verses and devotionals are also included. “(The purpose of the workbook) is to keep you focused and engaged and thinking about what you have been learning,” said Hicks. Hicks pointed out that some people are reluctant to attend GriefShare, and it may be especially difficult the first time. “We encourage people that if you want to come and sit (and listen), you are welcome to do that. We don’t force anyone to enter into the discussion, but they are invited to,” he pointed out. “We encourage people to come for at least three weeks to decide if the group is a good fit for them or not.” Like Kimball, Hicks emphasized that attendees may repeat the program since people go through

“We are heavily pursuing more consistent volunteers - maybe even some students looking for animal experience,” said Calla. “This would be an awesome opportunity for some kids to learn how we do things on the veterinary/rescue side if this is something they are interested in pursuing.” Calla credits the success of the rescue to the volunteers and fosters. “I would not be able to do it without my right hand man, Steve Brown,” said Calla, noting Brown is also a foster. “I focus on funding and taking care of the cats. He processes all of the applications, and my mom takes the sick cases on. Church lures in fishermen with fly tying classes
Along with Sunday services, most churches offer activities like Bible studies, youth groups and Sunday school. At Gateway Baptist Church in Honey Brook, an additional program is being held for people who enjoy fishing - fly tying classes. Dubbed “Fly Tie at the Brook,” classes began on Feb. 6 and will be held at 7 p.m. every Tuesday in February and March. During the program, attendees will learn how to tie a certain fly, take part in a brief Bible lesson and enjoy beverages and snacks. The program is free and open to the community. According to Brandon Stone, worship leader, the classes are conducted by professional outdoor fishing and hunting guide Jamie McLamb of Fallen Timber Outdoors. McLamb is a friend of Gateway pastor Walter “Poke” Shuler. “It started with the pastor and his buddy Jamie. They have always done fly fishing and hunting. They were talking about trying to find a way to get Jamie involved in something at the church. They came up with the idea of fly tie sessions,” Stone said, noting that people can attend one or as many programs as they choose because a different fly is highlighted each week. Stone explained that fishermen use flies as a way to attract fish and get them to bite the hook. Fly tying involves using a variety of materials, such as feathers,
fur and colored beads, to create what looks like an insect or another aquatic creature, like a shrimp or crayfish, which is then attached to the hook. The process requires the use of hand tools and a “rig,” which is a vice that holds the fly in place while tying it. “We have a lot of people close by that really love (fly fishing). If they have a fly tying rig, they can bring it, but they are not expected to. We have materials and the rigs,” noted Stone. “Jamie’s lessons are good. Not only is he teaching what you are doing with the fly and how to make it, he explains why it was made this way and what your fly is used for. By the end, (attendees) have at least one fly to take home.” The program also includes a lesson from the Bible that is related to the fly. “At 7 p.m., myself, the pastor or another preacher in our church will open up by welcoming everybody. We do a 10-minute devotion or Bible study,” said Stone. “We take the fly we are about to tie and try to relate it to a biblical story or biblical aspect and tie them together.” During the opening night, Shuler read a passage from Matthew 4:19 in which Jesus says, in part, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.” Another example might be a Bible lesson about deception. “The fly’s entire (purpose) is to deceive a fish. We will talk about deception and sin and what the Word says about that. We will use the Bible to encourage others,”

noted Stone. Stone emphasized that the main focus of the classes is to learn a skill. “(Attendees) are there for the session. They are not there to (attend) a church service,” he commented. “They can learn a Bible doctrine to uplift them in their spiritual work and their daily work as a person. After 10 minutes, it is all fly tying after that. It lasts about an hour to an hour and a half depending on the fly or if we do two flies. We have snacks and take breaks.” This is the third session of fly tying classes that has been offered at the church. Both parishioners and community members attend. “Most people that come are guests to our church. We have a lot of people that go to our church who are there to help and help teach,” Stone added. “We try to encourage people whether they are Christian or not or whether they are in church or not. If they are
in the house of God, we want to show them the love of God while they are there. The goal is not to add more people on Sundays. The goal is to have an outreach where we can love on people.” He added that the opening session included attendees of all ages. “Grandpas are bringing their grandkids, and adults are bringing their buddies.
