Anchored Ministries sponsors formal wear boutique
Miss Pennsylvania’s Teen visits Birdsboro library
BY FRANCINE FULTONA special story time was held recently at the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro when Miss Pennsylvania’s Teen 2023 Lizzie Shacklett stopped by to read her book, “I Read Before Bed.”
Lizzie, 15, is also the founder of Literacy Is Lit, an initiative that promotes books and reading. She visits local libraries to promote the effort, which includes hosting book donation drives for families in need and spreading the word about the importance of literacy.
“I have been able to do appearances all across the state of Pennsylvania at various libraries and schools. They are my favorite because I get to talk about my community service initiative, Literacy Is Lit,” Lizzie said. “I also had the opportunity to visit the state Capitol with some of our local senators and representatives to talk about the importance of literacy.”
“Literacy Is Lit,” which has a motto of “Finding & Filling the Literacy Gap,” has collected and distributed more than 7,300 books to organizations across the state that support literacy for children.

BY FRANCINE FULTONEach year, Anchored Ministries holds a free prom boutique at Twin Valley High School (TVHS), where students are able to choose free formal attire, including dresses, suits and accessories. This year, for the first time, students from all school districts were invited to attend a prom boutique on Feb. 24 at CROSSroads Bible Fellowship Church in Elverson.
During the event, attendees were able to choose from more than 600 prom dresses, which were displayed on racks according to size and color. Also offered were shoes, makeup, handbags, ties, jewelry and other accessories. All shoppers were also entered into a drawing to win gift cards.
The event was a collaboration between pastor Tim Radcliff and Erika Kanter, executive director of Anchored Ministries, who, along with volunteers, converted the church’s worship area into a

“We partner with CROSSroads, and we look for different ways to grow that partnership,” said Kanter. “When I saw the wonderful space, we (asked) to host the event here.”
One shopper was Flynn Newlin of Downingtown, who was accompanied by her mother, Sara Newlin, and her friend Kate Laughlin from West Chester. Flynn chose a light green strapless gown, while Kate chose a brown dress with copper accents. “Most girls wear long dresses to the prom, but they are very slim,” said Flynn. “Long is traditional.”
“We are all about thrifting and recycling and upcycling and having fun with it,” Sara added. “It’s such a fun blessing to come

Daniel Boone Homestead to celebrate Charter Day
BY FRANCINE FULTONThe Daniel Boone Homestead, the birthplace of the American pioneer and frontiersman, will celebrate Charter Day on Sunday, March 10, from noon to 5 p.m. Charter Day, which marks Pennsylvania’s 343rd birthday, is designed to commemorate the time when England’s King Charles II granted William Penn the charter to create Pennsylvania on March 12, 1681.
At Daniel Boone Homestead, the living history event will
feature re-enactors demonstrating 18th-century skills, including gunsmithing, leatherworking and blacksmithing. Craft and specialty food vendors as well as food trucks and concessions will be open during the day.
Volunteers will also cook a meal over the hearth in the kitchen. According to Amanda Machik, manager of site events and programs, the end of winter or the beginning of spring at the homestead was called “the hungry times”or “six weeks of want.”

“It was the end of winter, and they didn’t have a lot left as far as food goes, which is literally where they got the phrase, ‘Scrape the bottom of the barrel,’” said Machik. “Meats that they butchered and preserved in the fall were almost gone. Produce and root vegetables were extremely limited. For those ‘six weeks of want’ it was a hodgepodge of what they could throw together.”
Fortunately, she noted, cooks were able to add more eggs, milk, cheese and butter to their meals. “When spring started, the animals started to produce more,” said Machik. “The hens increased their egg laying and the family cow would produce more milk.”
The process of wool dyeing in the 18th and early 19th centuries will also be demonstrated. Machik said that Colonists would have used plants and other
natural materials for dye such as indigo, marigolds, onion skins and Osage oranges. “After the wool had been sorted, washed and teased, it was then dyed before being carded and spun into thread,” she said.
Visitors will get to experience the process of weaving tape on a tape loom, learn more about the textile arts in the Colonial period and the trade of traditional woodworking, particularly spoon making,
Buildings in the historic area that will be open for viewing on Charter Day will include the Boone House, smokehouse, blacksmith shop, homestead barn and Bertolet log house. Children will be able to enjoy Colonial toys and games. The Bertolet sawmill will also be in operation throughout the day. Sawmill demonstrations will take place at 1 and 3 p.m.
There is no admission fee for Charter Day, but donations are welcome. No pets, with the exception of service animals, are permitted on the site, and there is no smoking.

He will be honored before an anticipated audience of more than 400 business leaders at the Phoenixville Foundry, 2 N. Main St., Phoenixville.
Fiorentino is the 15th president of WCU. He has led the university through a nationwide shift in high school demographics as well as a pandemic, strengthened enrollment to more than 17,000 students and welcomed the largest incoming first-year class in 2023.
He grew up in Langhorne and Levittown with a father who was a World War II veteran and a mother who was a native of Barbados. Lizzie was crowned Miss Pennsylvania’s Teen at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York on June 16, 2023. Prior to the pageant, she authored “I Read Before Bed,” a 24-page picture book for young readers. The story follows Katie and her five friends as they discover what they can learn and apply to their daily life by reading books at home. Some of the concepts in the book include the importance of recycling, healthy eating,
kindness and respect.
“I wrote the book almost two years ago before I was crowned,” said Lizzie, who is a student at the Agnes Irwin School in Delaware County. “Miss Pennsylvania (who previously visited the Boone Area Library) has a full-time job, and she attends appearances literally every day across the state. I have to go to school, so it’s a different case for me. I usually attend appearances on the weekends.”
After reading her own book to the youngsters, Lizzie read “How to Catch a Leprechaun” and “The Night Before St. Patrick’s Day” in observance of the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day holiday. Lizzie noted that she will turn 16 on St. Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 17.
She also taught the children about Irish step dancing and provided a mini lesson so that they could give it a try. An accomplished Irish step dancer, Lizzie placed seventh at the World Irish Dance Championships in Montreal, Canada, in April 2023. At the pageant, Lizzie was awarded the overall talent winner for her dramatic Irish step dancing performance.
Lizzie also led a craft activity with the youngsters, making and decorating bookmarks. She spent time visiting with the children who attended story
time and posted photos.
Although Lizzie’s tiara was firmly attached to her head during the visit, she said that she does allow others to touch the bejeweled tiara. “I let people touch it. I let kids try it on,” she said. “It’s magical, and I love passing on the magic to everyone.”
For more information about Lizzie and information on how to purchase her book, visit www .lizzieshacklett.com. Proceeds from book sales will benefit the Literacy Is Lit organization.
“Story Time with Miss Amber,” led by Amber Hamel, youth program coordinator, is held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. The program is geared for children ages 2 to 6, but youngsters of all ages are welcome. No registration is required.

Students honored in essay contest
Several students at Twin Valley Bible Academy (TVBA) in Narvon were recently honored in the annual essay contests sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Taking place during the fall semester, the contests were open to students in public, private, parochial and home schools in the United States. Students invited to enter art contest
The Shapiro Administration invites all firstthrough sixth-grade students in Pennsylvania to enter the 2024 Lyme Art Contest by creating a short video or poster focusing on the theme “Protect. Check. Remove.” The annual
contest aims to help students, Scout troops, and community youth programs learn how to prevent Lyme disease by educating them about ticks, including where these creatures live, how to prevent bites, and how to remove ticks that do bite.
Officials from the Departments of Health (DOH), Education (PDE), Environmental Protection (DEP), and Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) encourage young students to participate in the contest and help raise awareness of Lyme disease.
The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on Friday, March 15. Contest information

Finalists will be notified by mail and will be invited to an award ceremony at the state Capitol in May. In 2023, nine winners were recognized at a ceremony with representatives from DOH, PDE, and DCNR.

Stroke prevention tips
Stroke has been described as a brain attack. It occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain becomes blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain breaks, which can damage or kill brain cells. The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion says stroke is a leading cause of death and longterm disability in adults. It also can cause irreversible damage to the brain.
Individuals who experience stroke may end up with memory problems or experience difficulty thinking or forming words.
Mobility issues like difficulty walking or paralysis and weakness may occur. Some individuals also may experience incontinence and other issues resulting from neurological damage.
Although stroke can come out of the blue and is not always preventable, there
are several steps people can take to help reduce their risk for stroke.
- Reduce blood pressure numbers. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a significant risk factor for stroke, says Harvard Health. Doctors may advise patients to work to lower blood pressure to between 140/90 to 120/80.
- Work to lower body mass index (BMI). Being overweight or obese increases risk for stroke, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Losing weight and maintaining a healthy BMI can help lower stroke risk.
- Exercise more often. Routine physical activity can not only help a person lose weight, but it can also lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels - all of which are risk factors for stroke.

recommends individuals get a minimum of two hours and 20 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week.
- Get a cholesterol check. High cholesterol can increase risk of stroke, which makes routine cholesterol checks important. The Office for the Assistant Secretary of Health says people should get their cholesterol checked at least every four to six years, with some needing to get it checked more frequently.
- Drink only in moderation. Alcohol can increase risk of high blood pressure. Individuals should reduce their alcohol intake, with one drink or less for women
and two drinks or less for men per day.
- Know your family health history. Learning one’s family health history may reveal a risk for genetic health conditions that can make a person more likely to experience stroke.
- Treat heart disease. Do not delay medical treatment for heart disease. Heart conditions like coronary artery disease or atrial fibrillation should be addressed promptly to prevent stroke.
Stroke is a serious medical condition that can leave a person debilitated. That is why it is key to reduce risk of stroke throughout one’s life.

9-1-1 Center transitions to new technology
The Chester County Department of Emergency Services (DES) transitioned its Emergency Communications Center to Next Generation 911, the statewide emergency services internet protocol network from Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA). Next Generation 911 is a faster and more efficient way for the county’s public safety answering point (PSAP) - the 911 call center - to receive emergency calls and associated caller information and, when needed, to transfer them to other 911 call centers in the commonwealth. Through the new fiber-
based network, callers’ locations are identified and calls are routed to the appropriate 911 call center using geographic information system (GIS) map data, noted Bill Messerschmidt, director of Chester County’s DES. Additionally, the new technology makes way for call centers to potentially receive photos and videos in the future.
Chester County’s 911 telecommunicators complete more than 500,000 dispatches for emergency personnel and equipment every year, providing support to 53 police agencies, 40 fire/rescue agencies and 26 emergency medical ser-

vices agencies. The update was made possible through PEMA’s interconnectivity funding.
Chester County follows
two other counties in southeastern Pennsylvania - Berks and Delaware counties - in moving to Next Generation 911.
