PHA Presents Donation To Ryerss Farm By Francine Fulton

HISTORY TALK

As part of its mission to provide support to equine-related needs in the community, the Brandywine Valley chapter of the Professional Horsemen’s Association (PHA) recently presented Ryerss Farm for Aged Equines with a $1,000 donation. Ryerss Farm, a nonprofit organization located on 387 acres in Pottstown, is home to 80 retired and rescued horses. To reside at the farm, horses must be over the minimum age of 20. “In order to keep costs down and to be more self-sustainable, a portion of the property is farmed for hay and straw. This year, due to an unusually wet season, their straw crop failed, and they were forced to solicit additional donations to cover the cost of purchasing replacement straw,” explained PHA member Jennifer Yoder. “At the

January meeting, the club unanimously voted to send a $1,000 donation to help, because without horses, there would be no horsemen.” PHA members and club officers presented the donation to Ryerss Farm animal welfare manager Amber Slaymaker and weekend caregiver Erin Renski on Feb. 24. During their visit, PHA members were given a tour of the farm and were able to meet many of the residents. “Reading the history of each resident that is mounted on their stalls was fascinating and heartbreaking at times,” noted Yoder. “Some are brought in by their caring owners, some are rescues and some are retired from equine careers.” Ryerss, located at 1710 Ridge Road, Pottstown, is open for visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers are also needed. For more information, readers may call 610-469-0533. Those who would like to donate to the Straw See PHA pg 3

Glen Moore United Methodist Presentation Will Focus On Welcomes New Pastor Art Of Myrtle Tremblay By Ann Mead Ash

By Francine Fulton

The Rev. John Neider, the new pastor of Glen Moore United Methodist Church (UMC), believes that a pastor should be more than the person who leads Sunday worship services. That is why when Ash Wednesday is observed each year, no matter where he is serving as pastor, Neider can be found distributing “Ashes to Go” to residents at different locations throughout the day, including at the Thorndale train station and in the borough of Downingtown. In 1952, Myrtle Tremblay and her husband, Louis, moved to New Holland when Louis secured a job with New Holland Machine. Tremblay was an established painter when she came to New Holland, but when she discovered the bucolic scenes of eastern Lancaster County, her art took a different turn. “Myrtle Tremblay - An Ever-Changing Scene” will be presented in the chapel at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Thursday, March 21, at 7 p.m. The presentation will be given by Win Reber, president of the GSV Art Guild, in partnership with the New Holland Area Historical Society. ARRIVING LATE?

SALT Performing Arts will present “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” at its theater in the West Pikeland Township Building, 1645 Art School Road, Chester Springs. Show dates and times are Thursdays, March 14 and 21, 7 to 9:30 p.m.; Fridays, March 15 and 22, 7 to 9:30 p.m.; Saturdays, March 16 and 23, 2 to 4:30 p.m. and 7 to 9:30 p.m.; and Sundays, March 17 and 24, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 3 to 5:30 p.m. The musical, set in 15th-century Paris, tells the story of Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral, who is held captive by his caretaker, the archdea con Dom Claude Frollo. Quasimodo was born with a hunchback and is feared by the townspeople. He lives in the bell tower with only gargoyles to keep him company. Quasimodo, who longs to be outdoors and accepted by society,

escapes for the day and joins the crowd during the Festival of Fools festivities, only to be treated cruelly by everyone except Esmeralda, a gypsy. Also interested in Esmeralda are Frollo and the handsome Captain Phoebus. As all three pursue her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies and it is up to Quasimodo to save them and the Notre Dame Cathedral itself. The play is based on the 1996 Disney animated feature film and Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel, according to Lauren McComas, artistic director and president of SALT Performing Arts, the show’s director and producer. She said that audiences can expect the familiar story, but one that will be told in a different way. “In the musical, all of the characters break the ‘fourth wall’ to narrate the story. They go in and out of being their character to address the audience,” she explained. “My

vision for the show was that the gargoyles of Notre Dame - the actual statues that are part of the architecture - have seen the entire history that transpired inside and outside the walls. So the gargoyles should be the storytellers.” Another difference with the SALT production will be the absence of a choir. “There is giant choir that is normally on the stage during the production, but I did away with that and the characters telling the story,” McComas said. “We will have seven gargoyles in costume and makeup. They sing the story and tell the story, and the characters will stay in character. It is definitely a different spin on how it transpires.” McComas pointed out that the author’s original intention in writing the book was to raise awareness of the Gothic architecture in Paris. “At that time in France’s history they were tearing down religious institutions (for modern

Wilhide noted that the show will include dealers from Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, New Hampshire and Virginia, who set up tables of their wares in the TVHS gymnasium. “The booths are separated by drapes, so each booth has its own identity. Some of (the dealers) set up a room with pieces of furniture to show you how the items will look. It’s a pretty show,” Wilhide said, noting that two antique shows are held annually at TVHS, with the spring event in March and the fall event in November. Wilhide explained that that the antique show started in 1969 as a fundraiser for the Elverson Fire Company, which was torn down when the fire company merged with Morgantown Fire Company to form the Twin Valley Fire Company. “Back in those

The Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) presented County Bar recognition awards to the Chester County Bar Association during the 53rd annual seminar of the conference of county bar leaders in February at the Nittany Lion Inn, State College. Recognized for its bar foundation drawing and Law Explorers program, the Chester County Bar Association is one of 22 local bar associations in Pennsylvania honored this year for sponsoring projects that improve the legal profession, justice system, or community. The Chester County Bar Foundation conducts a $20,000 drawing where no more than 200 tickets are sold at a per-ticket fee. If all tickets are sold, $10,000 is raised and one winner receives $10,000. The foundation uses the funds for grants awarded in the community each year.

A support group, a men’s Bible study, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and an after-school program for youths are some of the activities taking place at The Well, a community center operated by Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC) at 107 W. Lancaster Ave. (Business Route 30), Downingtown. The Well, which was once a private residence and most recently was a funeral home, was remodeled and transformed by volunteers from Hopewell UMC, officially opening in June 2017. The name of the facility comes from the story in Scripture when Jesus meets a Samaritan woman as she is drawing water from a well and is kind to her despite the fact that she was an outcast and shunned by her own people. Among the offerings at The Well is an after-school program that is held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. Darlene Alleger, who is co-director of the program with Emmy Shapard, explained that third- through fifth-grade students from a local elementary school are currently taking

part in the program. “This is not a drop-off program. Students are recommended by the school for tutoring and mentoring,” said Alleger. “(Students) come at 4 p.m., we provide a healthy snack and the tutors work with them on their homework until about 5 p.m.” This is followed by a devotional period. “We talk about things they want to pray for (as a way) to get to know them better,” said Alleger. “They talk about their feelings and we learn about their families.” The after-school program concludes with a time for enrichment. “We try to do a variety of things. We’ve taken them to the Downingtown police station and (a local sports center),” said Alleger. “In March, we’re going to have one of the teachers come and do a science project. We’re always looking for hands-on activities for them.” Volunteers, who are required to obtain child abuse clearances, are needed. “I am always open to people who want to tutor or have a skill to share with the children,” said Alleger, adding, “We really like it when the high school students (volunteer).” Those interested in volunteering are asked to contact Alleger at darlene@ hopewellumc.org. Activities for older adults are offered at The Well on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. Attendees are invited to enjoy snacks, games, art, crocheting/knitting and a Faith Talk. For more information about the program, readers may contact Jen Lisowski at 610-269-1545 or jen@hopewellumc.org. The Celebrate Recovery support group is

Myrtle Tremblay from pg 1 interpretations. The public is invited to attend. Reber became interested in Tremblay’s artwork when he was introduced to historical society board member Don Horning, who was working to process a number of pieces of Tremblay’s art that had been bequeathed to the society by her executrix in 2017. “Win caught the vision, and in October 2018 we met and he started working (to help catalog the collection),” said Horning. Reber’s volunteer efforts with the society led him to create a multimedia show on Tremblay’s history and artwork. Tremblay was born in Albion, Mich., in 1908. Initially, she taught herself to draw by copying pictures. When she attended Bay City Junior College, her talent was recognized, and she served as art editor of the school yearbook. She later earned a Bachelor of Science from Central Michigan University. She attend-

In the 1940s, she sketched servicemen and servicewomen for the United Services Organization in Detroit and the American Theater Wing in New York City. Beginning in 1937, she traveled to South America, Europe, and Asia, along with the northwest United States, painting scenes from her journey. Tremblay lived to be 102, spending her final years at GSV. She remained a student of art well into her 90s, and her works were displayed and sold throughout the county, often to help raise funds for local organizations. She received many awards for her work. um shows. After graduating from Cornell, Reber moved to Wayne and began teaching art at Radnor Township schools. He later received a master’s degree in art education from Kutztown College. While teaching in Radnor Township, Reber served as curator for the Rosemont Collection of Art and learned art restoration and bolstered his knowledge of the lives and history of various artists. He began holding art lectures on various art-related topics for community groups. In 2004, Reber and his wife, Carolyn, moved to GSV. Following retirement, Reber began exhibiting watercolors in Lancaster County and in Maine, where he owns a home, and lecturing in both locations. He was involved in founding the Art Guild at GSV, which puts on shows of local artists in the community’s Main Street Gallery. Beginning on Monday, April 1, “The Unseen Works of Myrtle Tremblay,” consisting of more than 20 pieces of Tremblay’s early work, will be displayed in The Harvest Table Hallway at GSV. The exhibit will be a smaller version of a larger show that will open in May at the New Holland Area Historical Society. Horning noted that rather than Lancaster County scenery, the display will include paintings created in Latin and South America, as well as Europe. Readers who wish to know more about the historical society may visit http://nhhistorical.com or search for “New Holland Area Historical Society” on Facebook.

are given ashes and a blessing and are reminded of the Bible verse from Genesis that states, “Dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” “When I am in church, I know that I am preaching to the choir for the most part. I get it that the choir needs to have its batteries recharged on Sunday morning,” Neider remarked. “But I also believe that I need to be out in the community meeting folks.” Neider pointed out that 2019 was his fifth year distributing ashes. “I have a little A-frame sign that says, ‘Ashes to Go.’ And, I (wear) my robe so I am easily identifiable,” he said. “One of two things happen. Many of them mistake me for a (Catholic) priest, which is fine. Other people who don’t get ashes say, ‘Can you pray for me?’ and that is a really holy moment. That fits my own desire to be out in the community.” Neider is not only pastor at Glen Moore UMC, but he also serves at Romansville UMC in West Bradford Township. Prior to that, his pastoral assignments were at Hopewell UMC in Downingtown and Christ UMC in Delaware County. “In the Methodist tradition, unlike other Protestant denominations, we get assigned by our bishop,” he explained. “I actually have two churches now. I lead worship at Romansville at 9 a.m., and then I lead worship at Glen Moore at 11 a.m. I can’t be long-winded,” he said with a smile. He noted that both churches share the same doctrine, theology and liturgy. “Some small Methodist churches will have a larger proportion of older folks. That’s not true at Glen Moore or Romansville,” Neider stated. “We have families and young kids; I love doing children’s sermons.” One of Neider’s goals as the new pastor at Glen Moore is to work with other churches in the community. “I believe that we should be working in concert with our brothers and sisters in the faith community,” he stated. “I have reached out to Faith Alliance and Fairview Presbyterian (churches). We are talking now about things we can do together. I get that we have different theological orientations, but there is one God.” Before becoming a pastor, Neider worked in addiction research and hospital administration for hospitals in the Midwest and later at the Chester County Hospital and University of Pennsylvania Hospital. In the 1990s, he joined the health care information technology world, working in a marketing role for a local health care company. He then retired to solely focus on being a pastor. In addition to his pastor work, Neider leads the Celebrate Recovery support group at The Well community center in Downingtown. Along with ministering locally, he has gone on mission trips to South Africa and Haiti. Neider is an Air Force veteran, having served from 1966 to 1970 in both Asia and Europe. Coincidentally, Neider noted that he provided the message at Glen Moore UMC nearly 20 years ago. “Way before Ralph (Cain, a previous pastor), I came here and preached on a Sunday. I was there to help whoever was the pastor there at that time,” he recalled. “God has a way of moving us into places where we are needed and when we are needed.” For more information about Glen Moore UMC, located at 1920 Creek Road, Glenmoore, readers may call 610-9422324, email glenmooreum@verizon.net or visit www.glenmooreumc.org.
