Local author to hold book party at the Village Library

When Kaylena Radcliff of Elverson was a youngster, her favorite book series was “The Chronicles of Narnia.” “That was a book series that I really latched onto as a kid, and I found myself often drawn to fantasy,” she said. “I tore through Brian Jacques’ Redwall series, and I think I read every single Animorphs book as a kid. I always loved those stories.”

Today, Radcliff has parlayed that

Tel Hai resident celebrates 104th birthday

“Ifeellike queen for the day,” said Theresa Yunger, who turned 104 on March 4. She celebrated her birthday during a party on March 3 at Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook, where she resides.

Yunger, who was given a tiara to wear, enjoyed cake, a rendition of “Happy Birthday” by Tel Hai residents and staff members and a visit by state Rep. Dan Williams, who presented her with an honorary citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

Yunger, who was born on March 4, 1919, has been a resident of Tel Hai since 1996. An additional party was held on her actual birthday with residents of Hillcrest Apartments, where she lived until recently before moving to the Meadows

Health Care Center.

Yunger grew up and resided in New Jersey, where she was a housewife. She and her late husband, Alex, had two children. Yunger currently has two grandchildren. “I had a good husband and a good life,” Yunger said.

When asked her secret to a long life, she replied, “I take it easy whenever I can. Don’t get too excited about things.”

Williams said that he enjoyed celebrating Yunger’s birthday with her. “It is my honor to be here today … to show appreciation for your investment in our community and the life you lived,” he stated.

Williams then presented Yunger with the citation, which read in part, “The House of Representatives is always pleased to recognize those individuals who through their wisdom and experience have

contributed to the enrichment and betterment of succeeding generations. (Yunger) has demonstrated the highest ideals of citizenship through the years and truly deserves special recognition … (and) has generously contributed to the wellbeing of others. We offer her best wishes and every future happiness.”

Tel Hai staff members on hand for the celebration included Tel Hai president Dave Shenk; Diane Kabbeko, activities manager; and Jolene Weaver, director of communications. “(Yunger) is awesome, spry and quite an inspiration to all who know her,” Weaver said.

A poster at the celebration noted that at the age of 104, Yunger has lived for 5,408 weeks; 37,960 days; 911,040 hours; and more than 54 million minutes.

early love of books into a career as an author of Young Adult (YA) books, including “Mouse, The Elmnas Chronicles, Book One,” which was released in 2019. Radcliff has chosen the Village Library as the location to launch the publication of the next installment in the series, “Fox: The Elmnas Chronicles, Book II” on Friday, March 31, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

“A book launch is a celebration. I spend a lot of time at the library, and I thought it would be a good place to (hold the launch party),” said Radcliff. “There will be refreshments, and I will read an excerpt from the book and answer questions. It will be a fun, celebratory thing and a place to come and support a local author.”

In “Mouse,” the main character is a young girl who wakes up not knowing who or where she is. “Mouse wakes up without a memory in a manufacturing facility, which is really a slave camp where they have taken prisoners and their memories and do experiments on them,” said Radcliff. “(In the second See Book party pg 2

Berks Libraries offers StoryWalk at Reading Public Musuem

Local residents are invited to take a short drive to the Reading Public Museum’s arboretum, where they can enjoy a StoryWalk trail that is being offered by the museum in partnership with Berks County Public Libraries. The current story featured on the trail is “Shoot for the Moon, Snoopy!”

The bilingual StoryWalk features laminated pages from storybooks that are attached to metal posts, which have been installed along the arboretum path. As visitors walk along the path, they will be directed to the next page of the story.

Inspired by Charles Schulz, “Shoot for the Moon, Snoopy!” centers on the popular dog from the Peanuts series who prepares to go to the moon. He quickly realizes, though, that training for space is hard work, especially when Peppermint Patty and Marcie decide to become his personal coaches. The book was written by Jason Cooper and illustrated by Vicki Scott.

The storybook is based on the Peanuts partnership with NASA, which is further explored in the museum’s current exhibition “To the Moon: Snoopy Soars With NASA,” curated by the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center, Santa Rosa, Calif.

book), we follow her world through her journey to go back to her home country, which had been subjected to this 100-year war.”

Radcliff explained that while YA is for high schoolage students, adults enjoy the genre as well. “The stories tend to be more exciting, more engaging and are more character plot-driven,” she explained. “My books cross genres. I call what I write dystopian fantasy. People have (described) my first book as ‘Hunger Games’ meets ‘Lord of the Rings.’”

In addition to authoring the fantasy series, Radcliff is a magazine editor, church planter’s wife and homeschooling mom of two. She is also the author of sci-fi novelette “The Canaan Project” and a children’s biography on Corrie ten Boom, whose family hid Jewish people in its home to protect them during the Holocaust. Radcliff has published numerous short stories and articles, and she occasionally writes for The Torchlighters and the Christian History Institute, where she works as the director of editorial staff.

“I grew up constantly writing stories and was always a very creative kid. I kind of thought of (writing as a career) as something that I could do in ninth grade when I had written a story for class and my teacher said, ‘You should pursue this,’” Radcliff recalled.

A college professor at Eastern University, where Radcliff majored in creative writing, also offered her advice, which she also imparts to her young children: “If you want to be a good writer, you need to be a good reader. Read as much as you can.”

The Village Library is located at 207 N. Walnut St., Morgantown. For more information about the author and the book launch, visit www.face book.com/kaylenaradcliff.

Farming has never been a vocation for individuals looking for easy work. Farmers typically work long hours, braving the elements regardless of how unpleasant the weather may be.

The goal of all that hard work is to ensure individuals who live in rural, urban and suburban communities have constant, readily available access to healthy foods. Such devotion merits support, and there are many things consumers can do to show their appreciation for local farmers.

- Buy fresh foods at a local farmers market. Farmers markets are many foodies’ favorite places, but they aren’t exclusive to individuals with a passion for food. Everyone needs to eat, so why not eat foods grown locally, which are generally

more fresh and appetizing than imported fruits and vegetables sold at chain grocery stores? Even individuals who don’t typically eat fresh fruit and vegetables can find something delectable at a local farmers market, where anything from homemade tomato sauces to locally raised fresh beef and pork might be on sale.

- Order directly from local farms. Some farmers have embraced the e-commerce revolution and begun selling the foods they grow to consumers via their own websites. Research local farms and determine if it’s possible to buy directly from them. Farms may offer delivery or pickup, and consumers can enjoy fresh

foods even more knowing that they helped farmers earn higher profits by buying directly from them.

- Check labels before buying items in local grocery stores. Packaging labels will indicate where fruits and vegetables came from. When possible, choose items produced by local farmers. These products may include fruits, vegetables, meat, or desserts like pies. Locally produced foods often taste more fresh than items sent from overseas or distant farms, and consumers will feel better knowing they helped to support local farmers.

- Spread the word. Get the word out after a satisfying experience with local farms and farmers. Whether it’s buying food from farms or taking advantage of family days that let kids enjoy a day on the farm, sharing positive experiences via social media or word of mouth can be a great way to inspire neighbors to support local farmers as well.

Consumers can do much to support local farmers. In addition to feeling good about supporting their rural neighbors, consumers can also enjoy a meal featuring locally grown, fresh foods.

Engineering students complete hands-on project

Parkesburg,

Jay’s Handyman Service

Penn State Berks associate teaching professor of engineering Marietta Scanlon and her students recently partnered with Berks LaunchBox for an activity. In the Engineering Design and Analysis

With CAD course, Scanlon’s students, who are seniors majoring in mechanical engineering and electro-mechanical engineering technology, utilized the computer-aided design (CAD) program Autodesk Fusion 360 to design and simulate loading of a cantilever bridge.

Scanlon spoke of the importance of the course’s “application to design” process and how students gained the opportunity to “study via simulation.” She also stressed the importance of introducing the students to hands-on projects that allowed them to complete the entire process of design, simulation, fabrication and testing.

Step one took place in the

classroom, where students modeled a cantilever truss based on a specific set of criteria. Utilizing Fusion 360, the students were able to simulate failure based on applied loads and make predictions on where and how their bridge would fail when loaded.

Then, Scanlon and her class spent about three hours at the Berks LaunchBox, located in the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts in downtown Reading. The Berks LaunchBox assists early-stage entrepreneurs and startup companies with accessing the tools and resources they need to launch and grow in the greater Reading area through accelerator programs, mentoring, co-working space for startups, a makerspace with

equipment for prototyping, and Meetups focused on business development.

Working in teams of two and leveraging the makerspace, students fabricated and assembled their trusses, cutting the material with laser cutters housed in the LaunchBox. Scanlon and her class worked alongside Patty Leshinskie, part-time LaunchBox facilities specialist and mechanical engineer, as well as Michelle Hnath, LaunchBox facility coordinator, and Erica Kunkel, LaunchBox director.

Once the trusses were assembled, the students returned to the Berks campus and loaded their trusses to failure. They compared their simulations to the actual outcomes.

StoryWalk frompg 1

The current book featured on the trail began on Feb. 27 and will continue for the next several months. The featured story is changed periodically to coincide with what is exhibited at the museum.

“We (choose the book) and order the signposts and the poster backgrounds, and we configure the layout and pass that on to the museum,” explained Emily Orischak, community relations coordinator for Berks County Public Libraries. “We pair our story selection with the museum’s exhibits.”

The Reading Public Museum and the Berks County Public Libraries established the StoryWalk in September of 2021. “It was inspired by pandemic-related concerns at the time,” said Orischak. “We wanted to connect with people without them having to

go into a library. This brings literature and storytelling out in nature. It bring two things together.”

For those not familiar with the arboretum, it is a 25-acre park with large exotic trees as well as indigenous trees and shrubs. The Wyomissing Creek flows through the arboretum.

“People can park in the museum parking lot and walk the trail, which is open from sunrise to sunset,” said Orischak. “It’s a nice trail with a few bridges to cross. It is quite beautiful, especially in the spring when the flowering trees are in bloom.

(The StoryWalk) is a great accompaniment to an already beautiful place.”

After completing the StoryWalk, visitors may stop inside the museum to request an activity bag.
