In order to earn the Eagle Scout Award, which is the highest rank in Boy Scouting, Scouts must first complete a service project that will benefit the community. For his project, Evan Beebe, a member of Downingtown Troop 8, installed a Little Free Library in Livingood Park on South Chestnut Street in Elverson, where area residents are invited to take a book or leave a book. He also added a bench so that people could enjoy reading their books in the park. Evan, a senior at Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown, said he got the idea to create a community book exchange after learning there was an interest in the program. “I had seen (Little Free Libraries), so I knew what they were, but the way I got the idea was someone on Facebook suggested one for the Elverson area,” he said. GUMC Welcomes Youth Ministries Director By Francine Fulton
Glen Moore United Methodist Church (GUMC) recently welcomed Shawn Thomas Trego as its new youth ministries director. Trego, a lifelong member of the congregation, is now leading the church’s weekly youth group meetings, which are held on Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. Trego was active in the church youth group for eight years and was also a member of Boy Scout Troop 79, which is sponsored by the church. He served as an assistant chaplain for the troop. Trego believes that his membership in the church, the youth group and the Scouts has prepared him for his new position as a leader of young people. “I couldn’t possibly think of a better opportunity to give back to my church and my community,” Trego stated. through soccer-based activities and games that are adapted to their abilities. As part of the program, players, who range in age from 5 to 18, are paired with volunteer buddies, who are predominantly local high school and middle school students. HIGH 5 soccer sessions take place weekly at Fellowship Field in the spring and fall. The spring season will begin on Saturday, April 4, from 3 to 4 p.m. “Connor Dobbyn has been a part of our GEYA HIGH 5 Soccer family for the past five years,” said Jenn. “He has a contagious smile and exuberant personality. HIGH 5 has been a great outlet for Connor and his family.” “While we provide a fun outlet for Connor, we are making it our mission to help save him and others from this fatal disease,” she added. The 5K race will begin at 9:30 a.m. The free fun run will be a 100-yard dash on the turf field at 9:15 a.m. before the 5K begins. There will be HIGH 5 activities on the field after the race begins for those who would like to participate but are unable to do the run. To register for the race or to donate, readers may visit www.racemenu.com/connor. Teams are welcome to participate. Runners should register by Saturday, March 28, to be guaranteed a shirt. Those interested in sponsoring the race may email Cindigeya@gmail.com for details. More information about Connor is available by searching for “Connor Beats Sanfilippo” on Facebook. To learn more about the HIGH 5 program or becoming a volunteer buddy, readers may contact Jenn at HIGH5@geyasoccer.org. Trego explained that after he turned 18, he asked the church if he could lead the group. “After the last youth group disbanded because the leader went into the military, the youth group was devastated,” he said. “Almost a year went by, and when I turned 18, I approached the church and said I would be willing to lead it.” Trego is a 2019 graduate of Downingtown High School East and is currently attending Montgomery County Community College in Pottstown to study business administration. While a member Boy Scout Troop 79, Trego earned his Eagle Scout Award by constructing and installing a new church sign in June 2019. The sign, which features the church name engraved in a composite material, is surrounded by a border of rocks. The stones around the border are from the pile of stones that were left over from when the church was built in 1873. Trego describes the youth group meetings as casual. “They come in and I start with a game because the kids are so highenergy,” he explained. “After we calm down a little bit, there is a Bible lesson and we have a great discussion.” This is followed by an activity. “Last week we made casseroles to donate to the church’s outreach program, which provides casseroles to City Gate (Rescue Mission),” Trego said. The following week’s activity was watching a movie. The youth group members also participate in outings. Last month, they visited an escape room in West Chester. “My goal is to have an outing once a month,” Trego stated. During the activities, Trego receives assistance from other adults, including his girlfriend, Paige Keyser, and his mother, Mary Trego. The group is open to all youths in the community from grades six to 12, whether or not they attend GUMC or any other church. “It’s a huge community outreach,” said Trego. “A lot of them go to Faith Alliance Church, and some of them don’t go to church. It’s a way to reach them through God.” Trego said his goal is to provide a consistent program of activities for youths in the area. “I feel that a crucial aspect of growing a youth group is consistency and dependability. Youths should look forward to a regular weekly meeting,” he stated. “I’d like to incorporate as much prayer, Scripture and devotions as possible into fun-filled activities for the group.” GUMC is located at 1920 Creek Road (Route 282), Glenmoore. For more information about the youth group, readers may contact the church at glenmooreum@verizon.net or 610-942-2324. More information about the church is available at www.glenmooreumc.org.

CPYU from pg 1 By Francine Fulton
Helping to strengthen relationships between youths and their parents, as well as other adults with influence in youths’ lives, including teachers and youth pastors, is the goal of the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding (CPYU), an international ministry based in Elizabethtown. Those who would like to learn more about the programs and initiatives offered by the nonprofit organization are invited to attend CPYU’s annual celebration banquet and auction on Friday, April 24, at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. There is no cost to attend the banquet, which is open to the public, but reservations are required by Friday, April 10. The event will begin at 5:45 p.m. with a reception and the opening of the silent auction. Dinner will follow at 6:45 p.m. CPYU president and founder Dr. Walt Mueller will present the program, which will include updates on CPYU’s various ministry initiatives. “He will also
talk about effects of social media on today’s youths,” noted Cliff Frick, CPYU vice president of administration. A live auction will follow Mueller’s presentation. “We will have anywhere from 10 to 15 live auction items available this year,” said Frick, noting that a licensed auctioneer will lead the bidding. “We will have sports tickets and sports memorabilia. We will also have some vacation packages such as Disney World tickets.” The silent auction, featuring items donated by local businesses, will close at 7:45 p.m. “We will have about 100 silent auction items,” Frick pointed out. “They will include kitchen items; tickets to area attractions; children’s items; collectibles; food items, like fresh baked goods; gift baskets; jewelry; and lawn and garden (items), including live plants. There will be some computer items like video projectors and tablets.” There will be an opportunity during the evening to support the ministry. Proceeds will be used for CPYU programming. “Proceeds are earmarked for
our different avenues of ministry, which include our training seminars for parents and youth workers, and for our training resources, which include our books and videos,” Frick stated. CPYU also provides a daily one-minute “Youth Culture Today” radio spot carried on more than 800 stations in North America and the “Youth Culture Matters” podcast. Frick said the programs are all designed to build understanding between adults and youths. “We provide information to people about the trends in today’s youth culture, not only for parents, but for teachers, youth workers and pastors,” he explained. “Keeping people aware bridges the cultural and general gap between and adults and teens.” Throughout the year, Mueller speaks at churches, schools, community organizations and government agencies around the world. “ We are a completely independent nonprofit organization, and we are not affiliated with any denomination,” Frick said. “We work with churches, public schools and community groups all across the United
States and (other countries), not just Lancaster County. Our president recently spoke at a youth worker convention in Canada.” CPYU celebrated its 30th anniversary during last year’s banquet. “Years ago, we focused on high school students. Now, we are doing work with parents of elementary school students,” Frick said. “The influences are so much more prevalent today on youths and kids. We have been successful for 30 years We want to be the cutting-edge resource (for parents) - the ‘go to’ place.” The banquet is open to adults only. To register, readers may visit www.cpyu.org or contact 717361-8429 or 800-807-2798. More information about the organization is available at www.face book.com/CPYU.Community. Pictured on front: Dr. Walt Mueller, the president and founder of the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding (CPYU), will speak at the organization’s annual celebration banquet and auction on April 24 at the Shady Maple Banquet Center.

DAR from pg 1 Kennett Consolidated High School; Joseph Pizolato, Octorara Junior-Senior High School; Cameo Powell, Oxford Area High School; and David Akins, Unionville High School. Beverly Lawler, chairperson of the Good Citizens Committee, explained that the honor is presented annually to students who demonstrate the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. The students are chosen for the honor by their respective high schools. “In August, I contacted area high schools requesting their assistance in selecting one senior from their school who demonstrates the traits of a good citizen,” she stated. “Today, we are honoring 11 students because of their commitments to their schools and their communities. These students will become the leaders of our future.” Lawler provided a brief history of the Good Citizens Award, which was established in 1934 and originally bestowed upon only one student per state. By 1952, the award was expanded so that each high school could select one Good Citizen honoree. Lawler explained that Good Citizens have the option to apply for a scholarship at the state DAR level. Part of the application is completing an essay. “Students are given a topic, and they have two hours to write an essay. They do not research the essay; they write from their own knowledge and experiences,” said Lawler. “I selected two non-DAR community members to judge those applications.” For this year’s essay, students had to respond to the question, “You and your peers are our nation’s leaders of tomorrow. How would you energize America’s youth to fully engage as effective citizens, and why is that important?” “Kira was selected as this chapter’s representative for the state competition, and we congratulate her,” Lawler said. Each Good Citizen was presented with a certificate and a lapel pin. Toni Keg from Sen. Andy Dinniman’s office also presented the students with certificates of recognition. Lawler recognized family members of the students, as well as high school principals and staff members who attended the event. Attendees then enjoyed lunch and refreshments prepared by the DAR hostess committee. Guests were greeted by DAR regent Dawn Coughlan. The Chester County DAR, which celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2019, is open to women age 18 and up who are able to provide proof of their ancestral connection to those who served in the American Revolution. State Sen. Andy Dinniman announced recently that the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) approved more than $36,000 in grants for four historical and cultural organizations in Chester County. The PHMC grants are as follows: $17,441 for the Chester County Historical Society, $4,000 for Historic Sugartown, $9,720 for Historic Yellow Springs and $4,490 for the Wharton Esherick Museum. The funding comes through the PHMC Cultural and Historical Support Grant Program, which provides support for resources and operating expenses to museum and historical organizations according to a formula based on their size and operating budgets. The Chester County Historical Society also received a $6,692 Historical & Archival Records Care (HARC) grant for the processing and rehousing of the Schramm Inc. photograph collection. The grant project will focus on the housing, arrangement and description of photographs from Schramm Inc. through its history - from making parts for the World War II U.S. Army Signal Corps to working on a variety of mining and construction equipment. Schramm Inc. was founded in 1900 with an original focus on the manufacturing of enginedriven machinery and portable air compressors. In 2010, it supplied equipment that was used in the rescue of 33 Chilean miners, which Schramm Inc. calls its highest accomplishment. The rescue mission took almost 70 days, and Schramm’s equipment played an important role in saving the miners. In November 2019, Schramm Inc. was sold, following a June filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Schramm II Inc. completed the purchase, with GenNx360 Capital Partners, a private equity firm, owning Schramm II. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is the official history agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. During the second and third weeks, the teams will practice with coach assistance and begin scrim-
seven, the teams will begin playing each other, and during week eight a possible playoff will occur. According to Kauffman, children who wish to take part need not have any experience with hockey. “(The program is) open to anyone who wants to learn the game,” he said, noting that those wishing to play field hockey later on will find there are similarities in handling the stick. “It will require some of the same motor skills,” he noted. Pequea Baptist’s interest in teaching sports to children began in 2010 when the church began running an Upward Basketball program. Organizers have based the True Goal Hockey program on that model, and biblical principles and lessons are incorporated into the coaching curriculums. The director for the True Goal Hockey League will be Randy Buckwalter. Kauffman said that the program can accommodate up to 70 participants but that coaches hope to see at least 60 area students sign up so that they can organize four teams in each age bracket. “We could have a three-game schedule
those same teams again,” explained Kauffman, who added that students who have attended past programs come from Octorara, Coatesville, and Twin Valley school districts in addition to Pequea Valley. There is an equipment cost to take part in the program. Boys and girls who wish to participate in the True Goal Hockey League are asked to register by Saturday, March 28. Readers may register at www.fbcpequea.org. Readers who have questions may email the church at office@fbcpequea.org or call 717-442-4403.
“I was looking for (this type of) project because I wanted it to be local.” As a first step, Evan had to receive approval for the project from members of Elverson Borough Council, as well as Scoutmaster Dave Mengel and the Chester County Boy Scout Council. “I made a proposal saying I wanted to put a library at this place in the park and that I wanted to add a bench,” Evan explained. Evan presented his proposal at a Borough Council meeting in the spring of 2019. His proposal was also featured in the May/June 2019 Elverson Borough newsletter. After receiving the go-ahead, Evan had to raise funds to complete the project. He established a GoFundMe page, which raised a small portion of the funds needed. “I did a GoFundMe, but it wasn’t enough, so I did a donation-based car wash for a day,” said Evan. “A couple of friends from my church youth group and Scouts helped with that.” Evan also made a presentation and asked for donations
during Elverson Day in the Park held in June. “I put (the box and bench) in on July 17, 2019,” Evan noted. “It was a one-day project. We dug a hole in the ground under the frost level. We put the pole in and added concrete on top. Then, we assembled the bench beside it. It took six or seven hours.” Evan purchased the Little Free Library online. “The fundraising gave me a better budget so I could buy a better-quality box from an online company that offered them prebuilt,” he noted. “I put a waterproof paint/lacquer mix on it, so it won’t get moldy. It also has a metal top (to protect it from the weather).” Evan said that the community has already embraced the Little Free Library. After asking for book donations on Facebook, Evan found the library filled with books for both children and adults the next day in addition to the Bible he placed in the box. “It’s community-driven,” he stated. “The Plexiglas window was broken (recently), and someone put a trash bag over it

until I had a chance to fix it.” Evan was presented with the Eagle Scout Award during his Court of Honor celebration held last November at Brick Lane Community Church in Elverson, where he is an active member in the church youth group. In addition to completing the project, Evan performed community service and demonstrated leadership as the chaplain’s aide for his troop. He also earned more than 21 merit badges ranging from First Aid to Small Boat Sailing. Evan said he was pleased with the outcome of his project, as well as his involvement with Scouting for the past six years. “If any adult is thinking that they want to put their kid in Boy Scouts, I would encourage them,” he stated. “It is such a good experience.” For more information about the project, readers may follow @LittleFreeLibrary19520 on Instagram. Nate Bird is suited up to take part in the Pequea Baptist Church True Goal Hockey League, which will be held at the church beginning Tuesday, March 31. The program is open to area students in first through sixth grades.

Bars: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add corn syrup and mix until incorporated. Remove from stand mixer and mix by hand the oatmeal and salt, until combined. Pour mix into a greased 9x13” pan. Bake for 20 minutes or until the edges start to bubble. Let cool slightly. Topping: Melt chocolate chips and peanut butter in a double boiler bowl over stove, stirring until completely melted. Turn off heat and add vanilla extract. Spread over oatmeal bars. Cool before cutting and refrigerate.
increase blood cholesterol levels and can worsen heart disease, while the unsaturated fats in fish like salmon can actually reduce the risk for cardiovascular issues like heart failure and ischemic stroke. When preparing poultry, people should remove the skin, as most of the saturated fat in poultry is found just beneath the skin. When people buy grains, the DHHS recommends reading the ingredients list on the package before purchasing. They should make sure whole wheat or another whole grain is the first item in the ingredients list, and they should choose only those products that say 100% whole grain. Instead of preparing white rice as a side dish, people should serve brown or wild rice, quinoa, or oats.

The DHHS recommends that people stick to fat-free or low-fat options when purchasing dairy products, such as replacing whole milk with fat-free or 1% milk and buying only fat-free or low-fat cheese. When snacking, people should reach for fat-free or low-fat plain yogurt or cottage cheese. Fruit or vegetables can also be added to such snacks to make snack time even more heart-healthy. Healthy proteins are another way people can promote heart health with their daily diets. When people choose proteins at the grocery store, the AHA recommends selecting chicken and fish over red meats. That is because red meats, which include beef and lamb, have more saturated fat than chicken and fish. Saturated fats

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) notes that fruits and vegetables are healthy whether they are fresh, frozen, canned, and/or dried. The AHA advises eating fruits and vegetables with every meal and snack, and that may require a little creativity to sneak them into favorite dishes. For example, the AHA suggests replacing half the ground meat in recipes for burgers, meatloaf, or meatballs with cooked chopped mushrooms. The mushrooms can be finely chopped with a knife or food processor, and then sautéed in some olive oil until they are soft. They can then be mixed in with the lean meat, and the meal can be cooked as it normally would. At the breakfast table, fruit can be added to a bowl of cereal to make for a more flavorful morning meal.

The American Heart Association (AHA) notes that a healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons to fight cardiovascular diseases, which the World Health Organization says kill more people across the globe each year than any other disease. Men and women do not need degrees in nutrition science to create heart-healthy diets for themselves and their families. In fact, the familiar calls to “eat your fruits and vegetables” many adults recall from childhood lessons or nights around the family dinner table still bear weight today. A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables is a hallmark of a healthy lifestyle. And supplementing such a diet with other hearthealthy foods is a great way to reduce one’s risk for cardiovascular disease.
