While people in need around the world receive warmth and a sense of security in the form of comforters made by the Neighbors Caring and Sharing women’s fellowship group, the group hopes that the colorful fabric quilts will also let them know that they are not forgotten. Members of Neighbors Caring and Sharing, which meets weekly at Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown, gathered on March 12 to knot comforters for the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a Christian relief organization. The women completed the project under the guidance of sisters Krista Petersheim and Carmen Weber, who provided nearly completed comforters consisting of a piece of material on top, batting in the middle and more fabric on the back. Members of the Neighbors group then used heavy thread to knot the
three layers of fabric together to make the final quilted product. “We use cotton crochet thread, which is easier to thread (through a needle) than yarn,” said Petersheim, noting that during the course of the recent meeting, the women knotted 11 comforters. Additionally, the women added drawstrings to small bags made by Weber, which are filled with various items before being shipped out of the country. “MCC fills them with school supplies, sewing supplies or health supplies,” said Tina Essick, program chairman for the Neighbors group, noting that comforters and bags will be taken to MCC in Akron for distribution. “They will send (the comforters and kit bags) wherever there is a need.” Essick added that the comforters are used by the recipients to keep warm or as room dividers for refugees who live in tents. They also go to sites of natural disasters both in the United States and See Comforters pg 8

sold at the door. To register, individuals may email JeMiller@ tvsd.info. “The Addams Family” is a musical comedy based on the cartoon characters created by Charles Addams that make up a Gothic American family including Morticia and Gomez Addams; their children, Wednesday and Pugsley; and Uncle Fester and Grandmama, all of whom are served by the ghoulish Lurch, the butler. The play revolves around Wednesday, now 18, who falls in love with Lucas Beineke, a “normal” boy from Ohio. “Wednesday and Lucas are in love,” explained TVHS librarian Jessica Miller, show producer. “The musical (depicts) the night that Lucas and Wednesday decide their parents need to meet each other for the first time.” After Wednesday convinces her family to invite the Beinekes to dinner, she must prove to everyone that their love is the real thing and attempts to force
the families into getting along. On the night of dinner, secrets are revealed and there is chaos and comedy, but the families find themselves admitting secrets and coming together. Ultimately, the Addams family must learn to accept change. Featured cast members include sophomore Conner Lawler, who plays Gomez. “This is my first year doing the musical,” he pointed out. “I wanted to have fun and make new friends. Last year I did indoor track and I stopped doing that so I could do the musical.” Morticia is being played by junior Marley Mindziak, who is very involved in the theater. “I saw (‘The Addams Family’) musical at an International Thespian Society conference before I moved here,” she noted. “I have seen the movies, too. This is one of my favorite musicals. It’s really funny.” Marley said the biggest challenge has been learning the show’s dances, including the famous tango that Morticia does with Gomez. “The hardest part is trying to dance while you’re singing, but we work so much on everything that it becomes easier,” she said. Sophomore Evan Lydon, who
plays Lurch, said his biggest challenge has been learning to walk on wooden platform shoes that were made for him to use during the show, adding even more height to his 6-foot frame. Other featured cast members include Katherine Beauvais as Wednesday, John Wodnick as Uncle Fester, Corey Wrage as Pugsley, Lilly Leonowitz as Alice Beineke, Reid Simmons as Malcolm Beineke, Kyle Mazur as Lucas Beineke and Marie Wadlinger as Grandmama. In addition to Miller and TVHS agriculture science teacher Nicole Weaver, director, the production team includes Wendy Clayton, costumer; Michele Algier, prop master; Joel Deardorf, light/sound coordinator; Tonna Dieter, pit conductor; Becka Melanios, choreographer; and Adam Sanders, set director. TVHS is located at 4851 N. Twin Valley Road, Elverson. Tickets for the performances will be available at the door and online. For tickets and more information, including the cast members’ biographies, readers may visit www.sites.google.com/tvsd.info/ addamsfamily.
ABC Keystone Receives Grant

Associated Builders and Contractors - Keystone Chapter (ABC Keystone) was recently awarded a $67,182 PASmart Pre-Apprenticeship Grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry to create the Lancaster-Berks Construction PreApprenticeship Connection (PA Connection). P-A Connection is a partnership between the Lancaster County Workforce Development Board, Berks Connections/Pretrial Services (BCPS), and ABC Keystone. Through the P-A Connection partnership, PASmart Grant funds will help promote preapprenticeship in the construction trades, provide no-cost education for 20 individuals, and certify additional instructors at partnering organizations. P-A Connection seeks to increase the number of youths, returning citizens, and underemployed individuals in preapprenticeship programs in the two-county area and to provide the skilled trade and employability skills necessary to build the workforce pipeline needed to meet the increasing demand in the commercial/industrial construction trades. A portion of the grant funds will provide opportunities to promote the pre-apprenticeship program through open houses and awareness efforts, and funds
will also be used to support Berks Connections/Pretrial Services. Berks Connections/Pretrial Services is an organization focused on improving employment participation of returning citizens through the development of a career pathway in the construction trades and other similar organizations; expanding the number of secondary and postsecondary partnerships; and raising the number of youth preapprentices in the construction trades. Increased articulation agreements with area schools, made possible by this grant, will allow additional area youths to more easily access the preapprenticeship programs. ABC Keystone will serve as the registered apprenticeship sponsor and is a registered preapprenticeship consortium. The Keystone Apprenticeship and Training Trust oversees the ABC Keystone apprenticeship programs in seven member-determined trades. Trades currently offered include carpentry, construction craft laborer, electrical, heavy equipment operator, plumbing, HVAC, and sheet metal. Pre-apprenticeship application details for the 20 students to be served by this grant will be finalized in mid-March. To learn more, readers may visit www.abckeystone.org or contact stephanie@abckeystone.org.

Essay Contest from pg 1 Although a woman’s right to vote is universally accepted now, there was a time in the history of the United States when this idea was considered a radical change to the U.S. Constitution. Addressing the topic of the 19th amendment, which granted women this right, was the task of local students who took part in the American History Essay Contest presented annually by the Chester County Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). During a DAR meeting on March 11 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Chester, Elberta Clinton, essay contest chair, announced the winners of the contest: Kenadee Carlson, a sixth-grade student at Peirce Middle School, West Chester; Allie Meyer, a seventh-grade student at St. Agnes School, West Chester; and Suhan Neema, an eighth-grade student at the Charles F. Patton Middle School, Kennett Square. Clinton introduced the students, as well as their family members, teachers and school administrators who were in attendance. She also read a biographical piece about each student. Prior to the students reading their winning essays, Clinton explained the premise of the essay contest. “Imagine you are living in 1919 while the women’s suffrage campaigns were having impact on Americans politically and socially,” she stated. “Discuss the pros and cons of this new amendment the U.S. Congress has passed.” She noted that specific criteria were taken into consideration, such as grammar, historical accuracy and bibliographical references. In her essay, Kenadee wrote a series of letters between a mother and a daughter, named Anna Miller, who was living in Washington, D.C. The letters, which Kenadee dated from June 4, 1919, through Oct. 15, 1919, illustrate Anna’s feelings about the amendment that ranged from excitement to skepticism. “I believe that there are wondrous things to come out of the new amendment,” the one letter stated. “Imagine
the possibilities.” Later, however, the letters question whether or not the women’s protests were worth all the effort. “Many see the suffragists as unpatriotic and look to them as if they were the enemy of the war,” the letter stated. “I fear becoming another victim of those opposed against our rights. There are so many amazing things to come of the amendment, but I fear there are also awful ones as well.” Allie titled her essay “The Women’s Suffrage Campaign Breaking Down Barriers: Gaining a Voice.” Her essay dictated the observations of a young girl living in 1919. Allie cited the courageous women of the era, including Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Lucy Stone and Susan B. Anthony. “Because of the courage and perseverance these women never failed to show, girls like myself now feel as if they, and their voice, matter,” the essay stated. “We are human beings whose voices matter and deserve to be heard.” In Suhan’s essay, she wrote a letter from a fictional person named Ruth Johnson to an old friend named Mary. In the letter, Ruth attempts to convince Mary, a nonbeliever in the amendment, that allowing women to vote is the right thing to do. “Giving women the vote could lead to them voting in more women in office,” she wrote. “Isn’t it fair that women start representing the interest of women, just as men have represented the interests of men for so long? I know you might think me crazy, but could you imagine one day there being a female president?” Clinton presented each student with a certificate and a medal. Winners were also presented with certificates by Toni Keg from the office of Sen. Andy Dinniman and by John McNichol from the office of Sen. Tom Killion. Pictured on front: Winners of the American History Essay Contest presented by the Chester County DAR are (from left) eighth-grader Suhan Neema, seventh-grader Allie Meyer and sixth-grader Kenadee Carlson.

worldwide. Weber noted that the tops of the comforters were made with squares of various materials so that no leftover fabric goes to waste. “I keep a small box and every time I receive donated fabric, I place a square in the box. When the box is full, I started piecing (the squares together),” she explained. Weber said that one of the quilts, featuring many squares with all sorts of patterns, was especially designed with children in mind. “It will give them something to look at,” Petersheim said, noting that the comforter includes squares with flowers, birds, teddy bears and more intermingled with solid red and yellow squares. “The yellow (squares) make (the comforter’s appearance) warm, so I spread them out,” she said. United Way of Pennsylvania and PA 2-1-1 have announced that all Pennsylvania residents will be able to contact 2-1-1 for help by the end of 2019. 2-1-1 is the free, confidential, 24hour information and referral service that currently connects 97 percent of Pennsylvanians with all the health and human services available to help. In 2018, more than 202,000 people turned to 2-1-1 in Pennsylvania for help. Information and referral specialists with 2-1-1 are trained to listen, assess a situation, ask appropriate questions, and then refer callers directly to the human services that will comprehensively address their needs. The 2-1-1 specialists also explain how to access those services, availing a translation service for more than 170 different languages, if needed. People may contact 2-1-1 to find information on basic needs, such as utility assistance or the location of the closest food bank. However, 2-1-1 also provides callers with everyday information like where to take their child for developmental screening or how to locate job training. To reach PA 2-1-1, readers may dial 2-1-1 from their phone or text their ZIP code to 898-211.

manufacturers of outdoor equipment will be featured at the expo. They will include those selling archery equipment suitable for hunting, deer feed suppliers, taxidermists, fishing and waterfowl guides, and those selling other outdoor gear and supplies. According to Fisher, the expo is the brainchild of church members Harold Bare and Wil Esbenshade. “(Bare and Esbenshade) have a desire to see the Gospel shared with everyone in our community,” explained Fisher, who added that the pair discussed areas where that they felt there was common ground between the church and the community. “The outdoors is one of those places,” said Fisher. “They personally have a love of the outdoors and a love of hunting and fishing, and that resonates with a lot of people they come into contact with in the community.” Fisher and Lauren Smoker, communications coordinator for the church, emphasized the inclusivity of the event. “This is not (strictly) a men’s event,” said Fisher. “This is for the whole family,” added Smoker. Smoker also noted that the Holders are passionate about living out their faith in the outdoors as a family. There is a cost to attend the event, and registration is necessary.
