TVHS to stage “The Pajama Game”
BY FRANCINE FULTONThe Twin Valley High School (TVHS) Theater Arts Club will present “The Pajama Game” as its annual spring musical. Performances will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, April 4 to 6, as well as 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 7. To coincide with the musical, there will be a designer bag and pajama bingo at TVHS on April 6. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m., and bingo will start at 2 p.m.
“The Pajama Game” is a 1954 Broadway musical that is based on the novel “7 1/2 Cents” by Richard Bissell. Noted choreographer Bob Fosse made his choreography debut with this musical.
According to TVHS play producer Jessie Miller, the story line follows workers in a pajama factory who form a union and defend their rights to earn a better living. “The girls who are the employes form a union because they are not getting paid enough. They find out that surrounding companies are paying higher, so they demand a 7-and-ahalf-cent raise,” explained Miller. “There is a new superintendent in the pajama factory, which is called the Sleep Tite Factory, and a love interest forms between the president of the union and the new superintendent.”
Both Miller and play director Nicole Weaver noted that most students had not heard of the play, but they are now familiar with its message. “This year is a challenge for the kids, but it’s
a really good challenge,” said Weaver. “The show itself is paying true homage to what was important in the 1950s. The women are fighting for their equal rights to be paid well.”
She noted that in the past, TVHS has done more familiar shows, like last year’s performance
of “Grease,” but this year’s show will be equally entertaining. “It’s a fun love story. What would draw people into this show is that there are great songs, great dances and a really cute love story,” Weaver said. “It is family friendly, and it will leave people feeling happy.”
The stars of the play are seniors
Hannah Kurtz, who plays Babe Williams, the union leader, and Patrick Skoniczin, who plays Sid Sorokin, the superintendent.
Patrick said that he is currently working hard to “get comfortable” with his character, noting that he was one of the few TVHS students who had previously heard of the
BY CATHY MOLITORISOver the past seven decades, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has grown from one couple producing one paper to a company that employs 150 people, distributes 16 community newspapers and multiple specialty publications to close to 200,000 people, and provides printing services for numerous clients. Although the scope of the business has changed, one thing has remained constant: community.
“We want to make that connection to our local merchants and to our community members,” said Charlie Engle, company president.
As EPC marks 70 years in business this year, Charlie and his daughter Jocelyn Engle looked back on what started in 1954 in the basement of Alvin and Pauline Engle’s Mount Joy home.
“My dad bought his own little press and put it in our basement,” Charlie said of Alvin. “He was working full time in the printing business, but he always wanted to do his own thing.”
In 1959, EPC purchased its first community publication, the Merchandiser, and by 1960, Alvin had quit his day job to

Tel Hai Camp reaches out to the community
BY FRANCINE FULTON“We are trying new things,” said Tel Hai Camp and Retreat director Brian Williamson, when describing activities being held and planned by the Honey Brook camp. First-time events have included a “Taste of Camp” breakfast buffet on Feb. 24, which served more than 70 people, and a camp craft day held on March 9. Also, the camp is planning its inaugural vendor and craft fair for Saturday, April 6, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
For craft day, attendees were able to take part in three different activities, including making a pine cone bird feeder and a mini campfire candle, and they were able to paint a portrait on a small piece of wood. “They could also do a coloring page,” Williamson said, noting that the wood “canvases” for the craft were recycled from fallen tree branches. Hot chocolate and coffee were provided to participants.
Both during the breakfast and on craft day, attendees were invited to learn about the camp and its activities.
For the upcoming vendor fair, various exhibitors will display an array of merchandise, including home decor and collectibles. “We have folks that are (selling) crafts, jewelry, antiques and essential oils,” Williamson said, adding that home-based
business vendors are also invited to participate.
There will be both indoor and outdoor vendor space provided. Separate fees have been set for 10-by-10foot and 6-by-8-foot booths. Tables and chairs will be provided for an additional fee. Setup will be on Friday, April 5, from noon to 4 p.m. and on April 6 from 6 to 7:45 a.m. Tel Hai reserves the right to reject vendors selling items that do not align with the values and beliefs of the camp.
“It’s growing,” said Williamson, referring to the number of exhibitors. “It’s going to be in the gym and Hemlock Hall, and now we are going into the dining hall because a lot of vendors are interested.”
Food, beverages and snacks, including gourmet coffee, will be available for purchase. During the day, the camp’s mini golf course will be open and there will be free wagon rides available, weather permitting.
Free parking will be located across the road at the lot at the camp’s lake. Free shuttle rides will be offered to and from the parking lot area.
Donations for the camp will be received at the event, said Williamson, noting that the vendor and craft fair is not a major fundraiser for the camp. “It is a community connection thing. The whole idea is to provide something for the community,” he said.
6 p.m. for seating and appetizers, and the banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m.
The program will feature character juggler and speaker Chris Ivey, who will display his championship juggling skills. Attendees will also have an opportunity to win door prizes.
An offering will be received at the end of the event to support Tel Hai Camp and its ministry.
Reservations for the banquet are required. For more
information, visit www .telhaicamp.org/events /spring-celebration-dinner.
In addition, Tel Hai Camp will host its spring work day on Saturday, April 13, from 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are needed to help with garden work, painting, chopping wood and small construction repairs. Interested volunteers should contact the camp office at 610-273-3969 or info@telhaicamp.org.

focus on the new business full time. It soon became a family enterprise, with Alvin and Pauline selling ads while their childrenCharlie, Audrey, and Denny - helped where they could.
Charlie recalled the tedious task of cutting and hand-gluing address labels on the paper as well as folding each of the newspapers by hand. When Alvin died unexpectedly in 1971, the family faced a decision.
“My mother came to us and said, ‘There are some people who are interested in buying the business,’” Charlie recalled. “The three children all agreed, and we all said no to selling. We knew we could do this.”
Charlie became company president, with Denny serving as vice president, positions both men still hold today. Audrey also dedicated herself to the company before her death in 2018. Pauline continued to work for EPC well into her 70s. She passed away in 2020. Today, there are also four members of the third generation of Engles at EPC, with several fourth-generation family members helping out sporadically.
Outside printing is the bread and butter of the business, with production running 24 hours a day, five days a week. Along with continuing to publish the Merchandiser and
other community papers, including the Pennysaver, Advertiser, and Community Courier, EPC produces local Chamber guides, Farm Show premium books and more.
Seventy years of business has included ups and downs for the company, Charlie said. Challenges have ranged from competition to rising costs to navigating the pandemic. Through it all, EPC has remained focused on its original mission: serving the community.
“Our family and the company have been blessed,” Charlie said. “Since we’ve been blessed, we want to bless others. We started a foundation in the early ‘90s, and that supports a variety of local programs.”
EPC publications focus on telling the good news happening at nonprofit organizations, schools and local businesses, and that’s more important than ever, Jocelyn said.
into providing digital solutions for clients, while continuing to support local businesses and tell positive stories through its community newspapers and online at www.townlively.com.
“I love the legacy my grandfather started,” Jocelyn said. “I never met him, but I know his goal and his mission was to support the
community, and we won’t lose that connection to the community. We will continue to be hyperlocal, providing our advertisers with options to target just their region and news specifically about your school district and local community. We’re focused on right here, where we live, and all the good things that are happening.”
“We are surrounded by bad news,” she said. “Every time we turn on the TV, every time we open our phone, it’s upsetting. It brings us down. There are so many good things happening in our community, and we want to shine a light on them.”
Asked about the secret to EPC’s longevity, Charlie didn’t hesitate to answer. “We’ve had good people,” he said simply. “We have so many longtime employees, some who have been here for 35 or 40 years.”
As for the next 70 years, Charlie and Jocelyn envision a bright future. The company is transitioning

play. “My dad is a trumpet player, and he was in the pit in high school when they did the play,” noted Patrick.
Hannah has starred in previous TVHS plays, but this is her first major role.
“This is the biggest lead I have ever played,” she said. “I am trying to let the character really shine. We have been working really hard at it.”
Other cast members include the following:
Mackenzie Bare as Charley, Sara Blankenbiller as Mae, Natalie Clayton as Gladys, Jenna DiFabrizio as Mabel, Sam Donnellan as Prez, Stephen Elliker as Myron, Benjamin Scott as Vernon, Kristel Stoltzfus as Sandra, Ariana Salinas-Evans as Rita, Sienna Brown as Virginia, Ian Eversmeyer and Max, Grace Kelly as Doris, Cecilia Skoniczin as Poopsie, Madalynn Gerhard as Carmen, Emily Hatcher as Mara, Lorelei Koller as Ann, Macayla Symonds as Brenda, Evan Johnson as Pop and Nora Tennant as Charlene. Student members of the production team are Mackenzie Bare, production intern; Ellie Troxel, stage manager; and Megan Shumate and Sienna Brown, student choreographers.
For the upcoming bingo, attendees will be able to win designer purses and adult-size pajamas. The event is being presented by the newly formed Theater Boosters of Twin Valley, a nonprofit organization. “We and some local parents created the club. We are having bingo on the Saturday of our performance,” said Miller. “We are encouraging people to wear their pajamas so they can (be entered into a drawing to) win a prize. The (cast members) in their costumes will be walking around at the bingo.”
Bingo is open to adults
and teenagers. Teenagers must be accompanied by an adult. Food will be available for purchase, and free babysitting will be available for children ages 2 to 12. Tickets purchased in advance will be discounted.
TVHS is located at 4897

4-H starts meat judging team
Chester County 4-H has added a meat judging team to its roster of activities. Complementing the existing livestock judging team, this new club offers opportunities that aim to expand the learning and competitive horizons for youths in the area.
The Livestock Skillathon is a comprehensive contest that tests participants’ knowledge across various
aspects of livestock care and management, from equipment and breeds to feedstuffs and retail meat identification. Similarly, the meat judging team will compete in contests where the team members will rank different beef, pork, and lamb classes based on estimated value. They will also learn to identify retail meat cuts.
Interested youths are
encouraged to join, regardless of prior experience. The team is seeking students who will work hard and who have a competitive spirit and an eagerness to learn.
The Romano 4-H Center serves as the primary hub for the meat judging and livestock judging teams’ practices. Additionally, local farms will host hands-on practice sessions. Virtual and online sessions will be used as well to ensure accessibility and flexibility.
Practices have begun, but new participants are welcome. The schedule will be shared with participants upon expression of interest. For more information, contact Audrey Reith, Chester County Extension 4-H educator, at alr5762@ psu.edu or 610-696-3500.

Summer camp promises daily adventures
BY FRANCINE FULTONParents looking for fun activities for their children this summer are invited to consider Camp Adventure, a summer program held at the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center.
Camp Adventure is a nine-week nonprofit summer day camp held in partnership with the United Way of Berks County. Camp is open to boys and girls ages 5 to 12. Five-year-olds must have completed kindergarten to participate.
“There is no residency requirement, but Birdsboro residents receive a slight discount,” explained Lisa Kraljevich, the center’s executive director. “We often have campers from Exeter, Twin Valley and Boyertown school districts.”
Camp is run by Kraljevich and Marissa Rapposelli, camp director. Rapposelli is a second-grade learning support teacher at the Daniel Boone Intermediate Center and has been with Camp Adventure for five years. “The majority of our camp counselors are pursuing a career in the education field and have a passion for working with children,” noted Kraljevich. “Most campers return year after year; many become (volunteer) junior counselors once they are too old to attend as campers.”
The year, nine weeks of camps will be offered, and each week has a different theme such as “Outdoor
Explorers,” “Animal Kingdom,” “Spy Kids” and “Survivor.” Themes change each summer.
Camps will run from Mondays through Fridays, June 17 through Aug. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Camp will be closed on Thursday and Friday, July 4 and 5, for the Independence Day holiday. “There were 104 kids who participated last year,” noted Kraljevich. “Most kids sign up for all nine weeks.”
Campers spend the days swimming, hiking, playing sports, doing arts and crafts and participating in reading and STEM activities. “Reading and STEM activities help to prevent the dreaded ‘summer slide,’” explained Kraljevich. “ ‘Summer slide’ is what happens when
students do not continue to read and participate in educational activities over the summer months. Teachers often have to spend the first three months of school re-teaching the skills lost by those who don’t continue to read over the summer months. Our program is geared to help prevent the loss of skills and even help improve reading ability and vocabulary.”
Summer camp also includes field trips, which are included in the camp fee. Last year, the youths visited the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and attended a Reading Fightin Phils baseball game. “This year, we will be going to Hawk Mountain for a live raptor program and hiking,”
