BCS And WCA Students To Stage “Mary Poppins” The King’s Players at Berks Christian School (BCS) in Birdsboro, in partnership with students at West-Mont Christian Academy (WCA) in Pottstown, will present “Mary Poppins” as their spring play this year. The musical will be staged at BCS on Thursday and Friday, April 4 and 5, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, April 6, at 3 p.m. According to BCS admissions director Rebekah Klase, who is directing the play along with Ben Smither and Phil Warner, this is the second time that the two schools have collaborated on a play. Last year, the students performed “Seussical: The Musical.” “Mary Poppins” is based on the book by P.L. Travers, which is the pen name adopted by British novelist Helen Lyndon Goff, who lost her father during childhood. Her childhood experiences were the inspiration for creating the character of Mary Poppins.
There is a series of eight “Mary Poppins” children’s books written by Travers. The books were adapted by Walt Disney in 1964 into a musical film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The stage musical opened in 2004 in London and ran on Broadway from 2006 to 2013 for more than 2,500 performances. It received nominations for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Set in England in 1910, “Mary Poppins” tells the story of Bert (played by ninth-grader Jerry Balog), a jack of all trades, and two out-of-control children, Jane (played by seventh-grader Rachelle Kratz) and Michael (played by ninth-grader Brayden Halter). The children have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins (played by 11th-grader Emily Davis) arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, Mary Poppins teaches the family members how to value each other again. See “Mary Poppins” pg 2

The ticket cost will include appetizers, dinner and the opportunity to bid on silent auction items. This year’s theme is “Take Me Out to Ball Game,” and attendees are invited to wear their favorite baseball jerseys. Scott Edwards, director of operations, said this is the first time in several years that the fundraiser will include a guest speaker. Noles, who pitched for the Phillies from 1979 through 1981, is known for pitching the fastball that just missed George Brett of the Kansas City Royals during Game Four of the 1980 World Series. Many consider that moment to be a turning point in the series that spurred the Phillies to their first championship. Noles currently works with the Phillies as an employee assistance professional. “He will share his own story, and he will talk about addiction and recovery,” said Edwards, noting that Noles has had personal issues with alcohol abuse and is now in complete recovery. The event will start at 6 p.m. with appetizers and the opening of the silent auction in the barn at the Manor House. In keeping with the event theme, one of the silent auction items will be a framed New York Yankees jersey, which is signed by 10 pitchers from various teams who pitched perfect games between 1956 and 1999. A certificate of authenticity is included. Among those included on the jersey are Yankees pitchers David Wells, who pitched a perfect game on May 17, 1998, and David Cone, whose perfect game was on July 18, 1999. In addition to the jersey, auction items will include gift cards to restaurants and beauty salons, theater and museum tickets, tickets to the Reading Fightin Phils and more. See Dickie Noles pg 3

Volunteers from pg 1 By Francine Fulton
The Chester County Orphans’ Court is currently seeking volunteers willing to serve as its “eyes and ears” by visiting residents under guardianship throughout the county. Those interested in becoming part of the program are invited to attend a training session that will be held on Wednesday, April 10, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Chester County Justice Center, 201 W. Market St., West Chester, in Suite 3300A. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Diane Mulhearn, Orphans’ Court administrator, explained that as part of the legal process, the court appoints guardians for individuals who are unable to manage their financial resources or meet essential requirements for physical health and safety. “These individuals cannot make decisions about their daily lives - where they live, medical decisions, and financial decisions due to serious physical or intellectual disabilities,” Mulhearn stated. “They need an advocate to care for them because they are no longer capable of caring for themselves.” The individuals under guardianship might be someone with Alzheimer’s disease,
an adult who has sustained a brain injury, or an individual with physical or intellectual disabilities who has attained the majority age of 18. A guardian can be a family member, a friend, or a representative of professional agency According to the Hon. Katherine B.L. Platt, an administrative judge with the Orphans’ Court, the volume of open guardianships makes it impossible for the Orphans’ Court judges to stay involved in each of the 750 cases that are open in the Chester County courts. This is where the volunteers come into play, serving as an extension of the court system by visiting those under guardianship. “This program is a godsend to the people we serve and to the court,” Platt stated. In addition to volunteer visitors, the court is in need of auditors who review annual financial reports, as well researchers, who create files for the volunteers that contain information about the guardian and the person under guardianship, including a doctor’s report. The file is designed to familiarize the volunteers with the person they will visit. “That is very helpful for us volunteers to have,” said volunteer James Godbold of Downingtown, who retired from a career as a statistician in the field of medical research and is currently teaching at West Chester University. “It’s also a great screening tool. Some people are more comfortable with (visiting) autis-
tic individuals or those with Alzheimer’s.” Volunteer Rebecca Stillman of Kennett Square, who was trained as a dental technician in the U.S. Navy, where she served for 15 years, enjoys visiting senior citizens. “For seven years, I worked with a corporation where we visited nursing homes to provide (dental) to care for seniors who could no longer go to the dentist,” she said. “I love (seniors).” “Volunteers can choose their clients based on their own preferences or geographical areas. Their time is their own,” said Mulhearn. “Why this program is so successful is because it is so flexible.” Volunteers are asked to report any issues they might witness during the annual visit, which lasts between 45 minutes and an hour. Mulhearn noted that problems are not frequent because many of the guardians have made many sacrifices to care for their loved ones. “(During the visit), they can share their challenges and accomplishments and they have someone’s undivided attention,” she said. “These people have hearts of gold and have rearranged their lives and their homes to accommodate their loved ones. They are unsung heroes.” For more information about the program or to request an application for the upcoming training, readers may contact Kim Bainbridge, program coordinator, at 610-3446484 or email kbainbridge@chesco.org.

Ulysses S. Grant. The current group is made up of re-enactors from Berks Schuylkill, Lancaster and Luzerne counties. Also featured on April 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. will be lantern-lit tours of Historic Joanna Furnace, an 18th- and 19thcentury iron works community. Visitors will be able to tour the old furnace store/office, charcoal barn, blacksmith shop and casting house and see the iron furnace itself. “We will have interpreters staged at the historic buildings, so visitors can stroll the site and learn about the operation of the furnace,” Zerr noted. “We will have a demonstrating blacksmith that night, and we will do interpretations in the casting house.” For more information about the School of Soldier event, readers may visit

Today, the 69th PVI is made up of individuals from all walks of life who honor the original 69th members by participating in Civil War re-enactments, school presentations, parades and living history programs as well as raising money for grave preservation of the unmarked graves of the original 69th PVI members. introduced to the red-haired orphan from Prince Edward Island when “Anne of Green Gables,” adapted from the 1908 book by Lucy Maud Montgomery, will be presented at the theater, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, April 5 and 12; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, April 6 and 13; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, April 7 and 14. Ashley Gage plays Anne Shirley, an 11year-old orphan who is accidentally sent to live with an elderly sister and brother - Marilla, played by Melissa Ticen, and Matthew Cuthbert, played by Caleb Zimmerman - at their Green Gables farm on Prince Edward Island. Because the Cuthberts originally wanted a boy to help out around the farm, Marilla,
encouraged by her friend Rachel Lynde, played by Sue Heil, at first intends to send Anne back. But she and Matthew are charmed by the talkative girl, and Anne becomes a part of their family. The foundling also carves out a niche for herself in the village, finding a best friend in Diana Barry, played by Soren Lefever, and establishing a rivalry with classmate Gilbert Blythe, played by Derrick Lambert. The play is co-directed by Monica DePaul and Alex Weaver. Huyard said that the tale of Anne coming to Green Gables resonates with the heart of Cavod, which was founded with the goal of associating the arts with the Creator, God. See Cavod pg 6

“The cool thing about live theater and ‘Anne of Green Gables’ specifically (is that) Anne comes to life again for each generation,” said Cordell Huyard, creative director of Cavod Theatre. “A grandparent, a parent, a grandchild, and even a great-grandchild can come together and enjoy the show. (They can) have some laughs, shed some tears, and go home realizing how blessed they are to have their family.” Huyard looks forward to seeing audiences

In celebration of Pennsylvania 4-H Week from March 17 to 23, Chester County 4-H clubs promoted the organization through a window display contest in storefronts throughout the county, providing awareness of the Penn State Extension’s 4-H Youth Development program. This year’s overall winning club for the window display contest was the TriCommunity 4-H Dairy Club. The display exhibited happenings with the club, as well as the entire 4-H program. It was accompanied by three cow figures sitting on straw bales. The second overall winning club was Sparks 4-H Club. Its display highlighted the club’s activities and its members through photos of a variety of hands-on projects. The contest was open to any club in the Penn State Extension’s 4-H Youth Development program within Chester County, and it promoted the 4-H program and its clubs’ activities. The displays were evaluated in the following categories: overall design, attractiveness and creativity, and promotion of the 4-H program. As a culmination to Pennsylvania 4-H Week, the annual Spring Tractor Supply Company Paper Clover campaign will run through Sunday, April 7. All Chester County Tractor Supply customers can participate in the campaign by purchasing paper clovers at the register when checking out. The funds raised will help fund scholarships for individual Chester County 4-H members attending 4-H camps and leadership conferences. For more information, readers may visit https://extension.psu.edu /programs/4-h.
