American Legion Celebrates 100th Anniversary By Francine Fulton

Ensuring that veterans receive their benefits, promoting patriotism and respect of the United States flag, and creating programs for youths are just some of the accomplishments of the American Legion, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The American Legion, formed by a group of World War I veterans, was chartered as a patriotic veterans organization in 1919. Locally, members of the American Legion Charles F. Moran Post 475, which meets at Freedom Village at Brandywine in Coatesville, celebrated the anniversary during the post’s monthly meeting on March 25. In addition to the regular business meeting and luncheon, attendees enjoyed a 100th anniversary cake that was served during the event. Following opening ceremonies,

which included a prayer by chaplain Andrea Crudden and a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, Glenn Gilbert, post commander, provided the keynote speech, titled “To Strengthen a Nation: The American Legion at 100.” In his speech, Gilbert explained that the American Legion founders had the idea for the organization while returning to the United States after serving in the American Expeditionary Forces in Paris. “They had time to think about what they would do after discharge from service in support of their wounded comrades, to honor the fallen, to care for the surviving spouses and orphans, and to protect the democracy they pledged their lives to defend,” he stated. “These troops envisioned a different kind of veterans association. It would be like none before it, nor any that would follow.” With a motto of “Still Serving America,” See American Legion pg 5

Local Student Competes In State Geography Bee By Francine Fulton

Michael Haak, an eighth-grade student at Windsor Christian Academy (WCA) in Eagle, has always had an interest in traveling and geography, and he has even decorated his room with maps of the world.

Thanks to Michael’s love of geography and his win at the school-level Geography Bee, he was chosen as one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2019 National Geographic GeoBee Pennsylvania State Competition. Michael placed an impressive 18th place out of 100 students at the contest, held on March 29 at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. Michael, 14, the son of Tom and Jenn Haak of Honey Brook, explained that after he won WCA’s Geography See Geography Bee pg 2

Scout Creates Outdoor Checkerboard At Birdsboro Community Center By Francine Fulton

At the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center, summer campers, students who attend the after-school program and even older adults who visit the senior center will be able to enjoy a game of outdoor checkers thanks to Girl Scout Nicole DeWald of Birdsboro, who recently created a giant checkerboard at the center. Nicole, 15, a member of Daniel Boone Girl Scout Troop 1007, built the 8-by-8-foot checkerboard as part of her pursuit of the Silver Award, which is the highest award in Cadette Girl Scouting. Twin Valley Bible Chapel from pg 1 Twin Valley Bible Chapel celebrated its 60th anniversary as a church on March 10. It was originally named Elverson Bible Chapel. Joining in the celebration was the College Chorale from Appalachian Bible College of Mount Hope, W.Va. Under the direction of Jeremy Yowell, the chorale presented a sacred concert during the morning worship service, as well as a few numbers at the banquet that followed at Yoder’s Restaurant. Also present were pastor Rich and Marty Hertzler. Rich was called to be the chapel’s very first pastor in May 1959, following his graduation from Bob Jones University. The first service was held on June 7, 1959, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church building in Elverson, with eight people in attendance. By October 1959, attendance had grown to 61, and the first Sunday school was established. In 1961, the church joined the IFCA and changed its name to Twin Valley Bible Chapel from Elverson Bible Chapel. In 1967, having outgrown the facilities in Elverson, the church purchased four acres at its present location, 105 Shirktown Road, Narvon, and built its first building. The first service at its new location was held on Aug. 25, 1968. For more information, readers may visit www.twinvalleybiblechapel.com. Pictured on front: Twin Valley

Geography Bee from pg 1 Bee last December, he took an online qualifying test in February. About a month later, he found out that he was eligible for the state GeoBee for the second consecutive year. “We are extremely proud of Michael,” said WCA principal Susan Null. “He has been studying geography every second he could. We are proud of his consistent effort.” Michael explained that the 100 students at the state competition were fourth- through eighth-graders from throughout the state of Pennsylvania. The winner at the event, Ben Fischer, a student at Gettysburg Area Middle School, will represent his state at the National Championship, to be held in May at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. “(At the state event), they took the 100 kids and divided them into five rooms and held separate bees,” Michael explained. “They asked eight rounds of questions. If you got all the questions answered correctly, you went to the finals. There was a tiebreaker to fill the top 10 positions. I went to the tiebreaker round but did not make the top 10.” Michael noted that the question he missed asked which city in Australia had banned the use of plastic grocery bags. The answer was Perth. Other sample GeoBee questions included: Located near the Green Mountains, Montpellier is the capital of which state? Answer: Vermont. Which state is closer to the Gulf of Mexico - Virginia or Arkansas? Answer: Arkansas. Which country does not include part See Geography Bee pg 3

Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is a Chester County- and Lancaster County-based organization that provides emergency shelter and transitional and permanent housing for those experiencing homelessness. To honor the 10th anniversary of CEO Nate Hoffer’s leadership at Good Samaritan Services (GSS), GSS board and staff have launched a campaign to fund permanent housing rental assistance for the organization’s Bridge of Hope @ GSS program. Through the “It’s Good to Be Home!” campaign, GSS is seeking businesses, churches, schools, community groups and individuals to make donations or set up fundraising teams to help avert eviction and homelessness for single women with children in Chester and Lancaster counties. When Hoffer was appointed as leader of GSS 10 years ago, the organization had three houses and served approximately 15 men in emergency shelter and transitional housing

the American Legion adopted four principles that were established when the organization was formed: veterans affairs and rehabilitation, national security, Americanism, and children and youths. Among the Legion’s accomplishments, the organization served an important role in the creation of the U.S. Veterans Bureau in 1921, the Veterans Administration in 1930 and the Department of Veterans Affairs in 1989. The Legion also helped pass the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, known as the GI Bill of Rights. For youths, the American Legion developed a national youth baseball program. Additionally, the organization provides aid to those who have suffered from natural disasters, such as floods and tornadoes, through its National Emergency Fund. Gilbert added that one of the main objectives of the veterans organization is to remind others of the sacrifices of fallen service members. He pointed out that each meeting of the post includes a “missing man” table. “It is a physical symbol of the thousands of American POWs and MIAs still unaccounted for from all wars and conflicts involving the United States,” he explained. “It is reminder for all of us to spare no effort to secure the release of any American prisoners from captivity, the repatriation of the remains of those who died bravely in defense of liberty, and full accounting of those missing.” The Charles F. Moran Post 475 meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 11 a.m. Each monthly gathering features a formal meeting where each post officer gives a report, generally followed by a guest speaker. The post provides a free buffet lunch following the program, but donations are accepted. Membership is open to veterans of various conflicts, including World War II, the Vietnam War, the Korean War and the Gulf War, as well as those currently serving in the War on Terror. Those who join are asked to pay a yearly membership fee. Post members take part in various activities. They provide an honor guard at area parades, attend the funerals of veterans, take part in Veterans Day ceremonies, and replace the American flags on the graves of veterans on Memorial Day. For more information about the American Legion, including details on membership, readers may contact adjutant Chuck Wimer at post475am legion@gmail.com or 484-645-2369.

Museum Plans Summer Camp The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is accepting registrations for the 15th annual Barons and Builders summer day camp, where children gain exposure to a full “STEAM” experience: science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Children are immersed in all things railroading during this five-day program, where they explore the museum, railroad history and the railroad industry through

a variety of tours, demonstrations and hands-on activities. Campers will be active and involved in the creative and learning process, tour limited-access railroad equipment and areas in the museum, ride roundtrip aboard Amtrak from Lancaster to a set destination, design and build model train cars to take home, ride a historic Strasburg Rail Road train, meet

real railroaders to learn about their jobs, and more. Camp will be in session from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, except for the day of the train trip on Amtrak. Barons and Builders summer day camp for children ages 9 and 10 will take place from Monday, July 8, through Friday, July 12, while day camp for children ages 11 and 12 will be held from Monday,

July 22, through Friday, July 26. Participation will be limited to 15 campers per session on a first-come, first-served basis. St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church and School will hold its spring consignment sale on Saturday, April 13, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church, 2440 Conestoga Road (Route 401), Chester Springs. A 50-percent-off sale will start at 11 a.m. “The big change this year is that we are accepting credit cards,” announced Sandy Elkins, preschool director. Gently used games, puzzles and toys, as well as outdoor play toys, ride-ons and bicycles, will be available, along with CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, books, baby equipment, strollers and more. “We will have over 100 consignors for this sale,” Elkins said. She noted that the sale will be held indoors, although larger toy items may be placed outdoors, weather permitting. Clothing will be sorted by size and gender for newborns through size 16/juniors. “We will have spring- and summer-related clothing and accessories, including shorts, light jackets, spring dresses and Easter outfits for boys and girls,” said Elkins. Also offered will be accessories, sporting goods and footwear, including cleats, sneakers, dress shoes, sandals, rain boots and slippers. All items not sold at the sale that consignors want to donate will be given to local nonprofit organizations. Unsold toys, sporting goods, bathing suits, dance items, home decor items and electronics will be given to Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence Region to be sold in the organization’s thrift shops. Leftover children’s clothing, small toys, infant items and school supplies will be donated to Cradles to Crayons, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization that provides supplies to children through age 12 who are homeless or are members of low-income families. Infant clothing will be donated to Birthright of Pottstown. Birthright offers free, nonjudgmental help to women facing unplanned pregnancies. Consignors will donate a portion of their sales to the school at St. Matthew’s. Proceeds will support curricular materials for the students; special events for students, such as field trips and guest speakers; the music program; and upkeep and maintenance of the school. St. Matthew’s School offers a variety of programs for preschoolers (age 2 and up) and kindergartners. Preschool classes are held weekdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and from 12:30 to 3 p.m. A Lunch Bunch, held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., allows preschoolers to eat lunch together, take part in free play and go outside for exercise. Kindergarten at St. Matthew’s runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays. Students at St. Matthew’s also take part in community service projects. In the past, they have supported the Ronald McDonald House and they have collected hats, gloves, scarves and socks that were distributed to homeless individuals in Philadelphia. “We are holding a diaper drive and food drive in April for the Chester County Food Bank and Pennies for a Purpose in May for the American C a n cer Society,” Elkins noted. Scout from pg 1 includes researching the project idea, meeting with the officials involved to get the project idea approved, setting a budget and timeline, contacting businesses for donations and fundraising, as well as submitting for Girl Scout Council approval.” Nicole presented her idea to the board at the community center, where it was approved. “We talked about it and where (the checkerboard) would be placed,” Nicole explained. “It’s out back (behind the center) in a patch of grass between the basketball court and fence.” Nicole explained she formed a team to help with the project, which consisted of fellow Scouts and her mom and her dad, Pete DeWald. She also raised funds to purchase materials by holding a scrap-

checkerboard, she provided the community center with a set of large checkers, made for outdoor use. Nicole decided to complete her project at the center, where she has volunteered as a summer camp junior counselor. “During summer camp, (the youths) are outside a lot to get fresh air,” said Nicole. “Some people don’t like playing basketball, and (playing checkers) is a pretty good alternative.” According to Nicole’s mother, Kathy DeWald, Troop 1007 assistant leader, completing the Silver Award project requires that the Scout demonstrate leadership, organizational skills and dedication to improving her community. “Completion of the project must total or exceed 50 hours of your time,” she said. “This

book fundraiser at the community center, and she received building material donations from local businesses. The checkerboard was constructed out of brick pavers with a layer of screening beneath it. The board is surround by wooden 4-by-4s. “My mom and I measured the area and drew it on graph paper, and we made a sketch and then we staked it out,” Nicole said. “We figured out how thick the pavers would be and how far to dig. My dad helped with the construction.” The work was completed on a fall day last September. “We worked from early in the morning until dark,” said Nicole. “We dug out the square. We pounded the dirt to make sure it was level and we put in paver sand, which is supposed to help keep it from sinking in and keep it level. We put on a few layers of that, pounded it and then (installed) the pavers. We filled it in with more paver sand to keep it from shifting.” After completion of the project, Nicole received her Silver Award during a ceremony held by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy on Jan. 27. She was one of 150 girls to receive the award. “We met the CEO of Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania, and we got a certificate, a pin and a carnation,” Nicole noted. Nicole, a ninth-grader at Daniel Boone Area High School, plans to be a camp counselor at the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center this summer. She is now a Senior Girl Scout and will soon start working on a project as part of pursuing the Gold Award, which is the highest honor in Senior Girl Scouting. In the future she plans to become an atmospheric scientist. “After I grow up, get married and have kids, I can be my daughter’s Scout leader,” she added.
