Village Library Hosts Author Day BY FRANCINE FULTON

nternational Children’s Book Day (ICBD), which is designed to promote reading and spotlight children’s books, is observed annually on or around author Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday on April 2.

I

Locally, the Village Library of Morgantown celebrated ICBD with an Author Day on April 2 featuring children’s author Lauren Nappi and mystery author Lisa Betz, both of whom are members of the library’s board of trustees. Betz serves as board president. Nappi’s book, “A Peanut’s Tale: A

Duckling’s Journey on Children’s Lake,” is based on a true story as told to her by her mother, Terri Elliott, who is the book’s illustrator. “It’s about a duckling who wanders away to Children’s Lake and meets two friends,” Nappi said, noting that the lesson of the story is about the rewards of helping others and

the importance of family. Children’s Lake is an actual lake in Boiling Springs in southcentral Pennsylvania; Nappi grew up feeding the ducks and swans on the lake. The book is illustrated with landmarks from the community. To learn more, visit www.apeanuts tale.com/childrenslake.html. See Author Day pg 6

American Legion from pg 1 veteran, which are the social members,” explained Linda Jacobs, post historian. The post also includes the Sons of American Legion, which is for members whose parents served in the U.S. military, the ladies auxiliary and the American Legion Riders motorcycle group. One of the most popular events hosted by the post is its monthly chicken barbecue. The first one of the season was held on April 2, during which post commander Brian Shepker dressed as a chicken, entertaining the customers as they picked up their chicken dinners. The next chicken barbecue will be held on Saturday, May 7, from 10 a.m. until sold out. In addition to the chicken, the dinner includes a baked potato, coleslaw and a roll. Also offered for sale at the May event will be hanging baskets

and potted plants suitable for Mother’s Day gift-giving on the following day. “Our members cook, and we usually sell out by 11:30 or 12 (noon),” said Jacobs. “That’s how good our chicken dinners are.” The post offers various social events, including karaoke and trivia nights and open pool nights on Fridays. Guests must be accompanied by a member. Annual events that are open to the community include an Easter egg hunt and Christmas parties for children and adults. “(For the adult party), we auction off gifts; it’s the same day as the kids’ Christmas party,” Jacobs pointed out. “We have Santa and Mrs. Claus and elves, and we have a big sleigh outside, and parents can take pictures.” The post also awards an

annual scholarship to a Twin Valley High School student, participates in Wreaths Across America and holds a Veterans Day ceremony, followed by a free dinner for veterans and their spouses. A color guard from the post provides a rifle salute and taps during Memorial Day ceremonies held in both Elverson and Morgantown. Also participating in the ceremonies are members of Boy Scout Troop 37, which is sponsored by the American Legion. Most recently, the post installed a Little Free Library, where local residents are invited to take a book or donate a book. “We are small but mighty,” Jacobs added. American Legion Post 537 is located at 4499 N. Twin Valley Road, Morgantown. For more information about

Moving Ahead BY ANN MEAD ASH

“This is the first normal year (my wife, Sofie, and I have been pastoring New Life Church),” said Chris Smucker, who is now pastor of New Life, which meets at 10 a.m. on Sundays in the Cavod Theatre,

641 W. Main St., New Holland. Chris became pastor of the church in January of 2020, but with COVID-19 restrictions interrupting regular life, the pastor is only now feeling a normalcy in the position. New Life is part of Dove International.

Dave Dienner had served as pastor for many years prior to the transition to Chris and Sofie. Dave’s wife, Connie, noted that by spring of 2018, the Dienners were looking for a younger couple to take over the ministry. “(The church) was growing, and we felt God saying it was time to pass the baton,” said Connie. “Dave’s favorite verse is ‘One generation shall praise His works to another’ from Psalm 145:4,” she said. “(Dave’s) heart was to raise up the next generation.” Chris, who grew up in Churchtown, first met Dave and Connie more than 20 years ago when they were youth pastors at a church he attended. Chris met Sofie when she came to the U.S. from Belgium around 2000 and both of them attended a ministry training program being held in the Pequea Valley area. At the end of the two-year training session, Chris and Sofie were married, and they went to Cape Town, South Africa, to be part of a ministry there. When they returned in 2008, they began attending New Life and soon became part of the church leadership team. When Connie, Dave, and the church elders formed a succession team, Chris and Sofie were part of the effort. “We asked if any of the elders felt the call (to be pastor),” said Connie, who noted that Chris and Sofie immediately said, “No,” before coming

back to say that they should pray about the decision. “God began to work in their hearts,” said Connie, who noted that the church culture resembles a family. “We really wanted to find a pastor from within,” she said. In April 2019, Chris and Sofie began praying about the offer. “In June 2019, we really felt God was calling us,” said Chris, who noted he initially refused because he felt

Betz’s debut novel was “Death and a Crocodile,” a light-hearted mystery set in first-century Rome. The book tells the story of amateur detective Livia Aemilia, whose father dies under suspicious circumstances. With the help of her maidservant, Livia sets out to find the killer before her innocent brother is convicted of the murder. In addition to the courageous women, the book includes eccentric characters and a sausage-stealing cat. The book won several awards, including the Golden Scroll Novel of the Year in 2021. “Fountains and Secrets” is the second in the series of the Livia Aemilia mysteries. In this book, Livia becomes interested in solving a missing persons case, but her husband is reluctant for her to get involved, knowing that she

Wednesday, April 27. Information about the proposal can be found at www.chesco.org/passengerrail and comments can be submitted to ccplanning@chesco.org. The board of commissioners for Montgomery and Berks counties will also hold public hearings to consider the proposal during their respective meetings in April. The Tri-County Passenger Rail Committee, a ninemember group consisting of one county commissioner from each county and other local leaders, is recommending the formation of the SRPRA after a year of exploring the most efficient manner to restore passenger rail service to the region. The SRPRA will have the power to formalize agreements, procure funding and provide for a direct governmental body that can work with AMTRAK, PennDOT, the Federal Railroad Administration, and other necessary partners.

Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell, and Michelle Kichline have taken the next step toward restoring passenger rail service between Reading and Philadelphia in a joint effort with Berks and Montgomery counties. The commissioners unanimously approved a resolution announcing a public hearing to consider a proposal to create the Schuylkill River Passenger Rail Authority (SRPRA). The SRPRA would replace the current Tri-County Passenger Rail Committee and would be supported with representation and funding from all three counties.
