Students, Staff Members Remain Connected Local Church By Francine Fulton

Even though the school doors are closed, every effort is being made at Conestoga Christian School (CCS) for students, faculty and staff members to stay connected. Students are taking part in online learning and staff members and parents are meeting via Zoom with head of school Ken Parris. In addition, students have been praying together online in place of the normally scheduled inschool chapel. “We are making the best of it,” Ken said. Although not in preparation for the coronavirus pandemic, the school had already instituted an at-home learning program for high school students. “Four years ago we went one-on-one with our high school students, so they had their Chromebooks all the time,”

Ken explained. “If we had a snow day or power outage, we needed to be ready to go online. Two years ago when we had a prolonged winter storm and we were out for three days, we relied on online instruction.” The program was expanded recently following the mandate that all private and public schools in Pennsylvania be closed due to the coronavirus outbreak. “When this came down and we had to close, we took the first two weeks as our spring break,” said Ken. “We spent time working through how to do (online instruction) well. Going into our online instruction, the three major concerns or platforms we preached to our teachers were academics, community and caring. That was our mantra.” Now, students are asked to complete assignments and take part in Zoom meetings. “We are tracking attendance See Conestoga Christian pg 2

Artist To Offer Online Workshop By Francine Fulton

Local artist Anna Carter of Rose River Way Studio will offer an online art workshop on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, May 5, 6 and 7, at 7 p.m. each evening. A fee will be charged for the

three-day class, with half of the proceeds donated to the Village Library of Morgantown. “This will be a workshop hosted live, online through YouTube,” Carter explained. “I will be starting with the very basics of watercolor paint and how it works and then progressively move on until (participants) are able to create a picture of their own. The painting we will end the course with would make a great homemade Mother’s Day gift.” Carter said the workshop is geared toward teenagers, adults and seniors. “I know that many elderly (people) are quarantined even from their families,” she noted. “I want this class to be an opportunity for them to do an activity with their family, remotely.” She said even those with no painting experience will enjoy the class. “Watercolor is not as intuitive as other mediums, but once you understand a few tips on how it works you can actually get a really See Artist pg 7

During the Zoom class meetings, students are able to see their friends and take part in shared activities. “One of our first classes to do a Zoom meeting was second grade. Because they had not seen each other for two weeks, their faces lit up,” Ken said. “One of our elementary teachers had a Zoom hangout and it was ‘Zoom With Your Pet Day,’ so all the kids were holding a pet. That (social interaction) counts as much as the academics.” Parents are also meeting with Ken via Zoom. “Last week, I set up evening Zoom meetings with all my parents. I broke it down into parent groups by grade,” he explained. “It gave parents an opportunity to talk and share concerns. That was part of the community and care strategy.” Michelle Parris, admissions director, said that the school recorded a chapel session that featured music and worship. “They sang worship songs together,” she said. “For

Natural Lands recently announced the successful preservation of the 54-acre Castle Rock Farm that straddles Pocopson and West Bradford townships in Chester County. The farm is adjacent to several other already-protected properties, adding to a growing greenway along West Branch Brandywine Creek. The conservation easement ensures the property is never developed, preserving the pastoral, scenic views along West Branch Brandywine Creek. In addition, the deal means Castle Rock Farm will continue to provide ecological benefit by recharging groundwater supplies, slowing and filtering stormwater and reducing flooding during storms. Chester County’s protected open spaces, like Castle Rock Farm, offer far more than pretty views. A study released last year by the Chester County Planning Commission documented the myriad ways in which preserved

green spaces are economic powerhouses that generate significant value for the region. According to the study, open space contributes to the local economy, increases property values and saves money on everything from health care to recreation. It improves the air and water, reducing the cost of providing these basic services. According to Natural Lands president Oliver Bass, the organization has been working to save the region’s land - forests, fields and farms like Castle Rock Farm since 1953. The group’s preservation efforts have resulted in more than 125,000 acres of permanently protected open space. Natural Lands received funding to underwrite the project from Chester County’s Preservation Partnership Program; Mars Foundation; the Marshallton Conservation Trust; the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program; West Bradford Township; and the Gianguilio family. Landowner Peter Gianguilio noted that his family has owned the property since 1957. Natural Lands, which is member supported, has preserved more than 125,000 acres, including 43 nature preserves and one public garden totaling more than 23,000 acres. Nearly five million people live within 5 miles of land under the organization’s protection, according to Natural Lands. For more details, readers may visit www.natlands.org.

Items that are needed by the pantry include sugar, cereal, paper products, laundry detergent, dishwashing soap and bars of soap, as well as beverages such as soda, water and fruit juices that do not require refrigeration. Distributions are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month. The next scheduled distribution will be on April 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. Following social distancing policies, the TVFP will again operate as a drive-through. Clients will be asked to remain in

their cars, and a volunteer will load the prepackaged food items into the clients’ vehicles. About 10 to 15 volunteers are needed to sort and stock food and build boxes in preparation for the April 28 distribution on Wednesday, April 22, beginning at 7 p.m. Those who are at higher risk for contracting an illness should stay home and be safe. “We will be trying to maintain a smaller volunteer support staff since we will have limited client interaction,” stated Howard Moss in the TVFP’s monthly newsletter. “Please do not feel offended if we state that we have enough volunteers upon your arrival. We respect everyone’s willingness to volunteer and hopefully these restrictions will be only a couple of months.” For more information about the pantry, readers may email Moss at hamoss@ptd.net or visit www.facebook.com/twinvalley foodpantry.org. With experts saying to avoid crowded places because of the novel coronavirus, people may wonder what to do about grocery shopping. One option people are turning to is grocery delivery services. Grocery delivery services have seen a dramatic increase in recent weeks, particularly in states where the most coronavirus cases have been reported, such as California, Washington, and New York. However, according to Consumer Reports, when someone buys groceries online or in stores, there are some simple steps they

can take to try to limit their exposure to the novel coronavirus. First, nonporous containers, such as plastic, glass, and metal, should be washed using dish soap before they are put away. Simple rubbing with soap and water can kill the coronavirus, because it tears apart the virus’s outer barrier. After putting groceries away, people should wash their hands, countertops, and other surfaces that have been touched. Using a disinfectant is not necessary, unless one’s living space is being shared with someone who is exhibiting signs of respiratory illness or has been exposed to the virus. Produce should be washed with running water. There is no data to show that washing fruits and vegetables with soap will do a better job of eliminating coronavirus or that the virus is spread by consuming those foods, Rogers says. However, rubbing fruits and vegetables under running water and scrubbing those with hard skins can help remove pesticides. Other steps may not make much difference. For instance, buying frozen vegetables rather than fresh under the assumption that they are packed in a more sanitary way has not been backed up by evidence. Even if a grocery store or warehouse is thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis, the delivery person needs to take the same precautions to prevent the spread of a virus to

the customer. So while companies may highly recommend that deliverers wash their hands often, practice other hygiene measures, and stay home when they are feeling sick, they cannot monitor whether drivers are actually taking those precautions. And without paid sick leave, workers are going to try to push through as much as they can. That said, several steps should be taken when ordering deliveries. Customers should avoid a direct hand-off. Instead, customers should arrange to have the items delivered to their doorstep or a place nearby instead. Some companies have places on their order forms where customers can indicate special delivery instructions. FreshDirect says its drivers will no longer bring your groceries into your home. One benefit of ordering deliveries online or via an app is that customers do not have to hand money to the delivery person. Opportunities to tip the delivery person are included in most of the delivery apps and online ordering systems. Customers are encouraged to order earlier than they normally do. Though it is not a safety issue, customers may find that in the midst of higher demand, they have to wait longer than normal. The steps are basically the same for picking up prepacked groceries as for delivery. If the groceries have been ordered in advance and someone is merely putting the groceries in the car in the parking lot,

I started an Instagram page and we are up to 130 people, which is great.” She also wants to help people cope with the current pandemic by offering programming on the library’s Facebook page, as well as pertinent information. “Staying connected with people is our big goal,” she said. “We are here for our patrons even though we can’t be there physically for them. different services and things that people can check out,” Long shared. “Our e-resources are still available like e-books and things they can access from home.” Since the library cannot host its annual spring book sale, Long has started a GoFundMe page, titled “Five a Day Keeps Library Pay.” “We hope to raise $5,000 dollars in the process,” said Long. “The online fundraiser is until the end of April but will extend if needed. Even if people gave as little as $5 and you (multiply that by) 500 to 1,000 people, that’s a lot of money.” Once the library opens, Long wants to get to the know the patrons and continue to offer online programming. She also hopes to make the Village Library a popular place for people of all ages to enjoy, especially youths. “My goal as a whole is to have a strong online presence whether we are closed or not,”

shoppers should consider opening the car door themselves rather than having the person bringing the items to the car touch the handles. And if tips can be provided on the supermarket’s app, shoppers should choose that option rather than handing over cash. A key way to prevent the virus’s spread when buying groceries instore is to stay 6 feet away from other people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that is generally the distance within which people pick up coronavirus droplets through the air from a cough or sneeze. Such “social distancing” is a good strategy in any situation outside the home. Customers are encouraged to go shopping at a time that is less busy. Readers may type the store’s name and location in Google search, and often a box will pop up showing when foot traffic there is highest. Customers are encouraged to take germicide with them. The germicide should be used to wipe their hands and the cart, both before and after shopping. Customers are also encouraged to use a credit or debit card. That way, they do not have to hand over bills or receive change. Customers should use their own pen to sign receipts. If available, customers should consider using a virtual payment system like Apple Pay so that they do not have to open their wallet at all.

The Catholic Bishop Abuse Reporting Service (CBAR) has been established as a result of the ongoing commitment of Roman Catholic Church bishops of the United States to addressing the issue of abuse in the church. CBAR is a service operated by Convercent, an independent, third-party entity that provides intake services to private institutions for reports of sensitive topics through a secure, confidential, professional platform. Individuals may go to www.reportbishopabuse.org to file a report or call 800-276-1562. CBAR allows for individuals to relay to church authorities any

reports of abuse by a U.S. Catholic bishop. When a report is received, it will be forwarded to the local metropolitan archbishop, who will undertake the responsibility of initially assessing the report. In the event that a report is received that concerns a metropolitan archbishop, it will be forwarded to the bishop of the senior suffragan diocese by the independent third-party reporting system. In the Province of Pennsylvania the senior suffragan diocese is the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The CBAR service does not replace existing reporting systems for complaints against

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia strongly encourages anyone making a complaint of alleged criminal activity to contact the appropriate law enforcement agency to make a report. The Pennsylvania Department of Aging recently issued guidance to help older adult day centers, adult protective services, and senior centers continue to meet the needs of older adults while coronavirus mitigation measures remain in effect. Some of the guidance addresses temporary senior center and adult day center closings, congregate meal alternatives, and processes that can temporarily be completed via telephone rather than in person. The guidelines are available at w w w. a g i n g . p a . g o v / s e r v i c e -provider-quicklinks/covid-19 -provider-guidance/Pages/ default.aspx. The department is also relaxing restrictions in the PACE prescription assistance program that require a person to use 75% of their medication before seeking a refill. Enrollees who wish to receive an exception must have their pharmacy provider call PACE at 800-835-8040. All enrollees should be able to

receive free home delivery of medications from their pharmacy. Enrollees who have difficulty obtaining their refills may call Cardholder Services at 800225-7223. In addition, the deadline for older Pennsylvanians and disabled state residents to apply for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program has been extended from Tuesday, June 30, until Thursday, Dec. 31. The program provides rebates of up to $975 for eligible Pennsylvanians age 65 and older; widows and widowers age 50 and older; and disabled individuals age 18 and older. The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 annually for renters, and half of Social Security income is excluded. The Online Customer Service Center remains open for applicants who have questions about the program, and it may be accessed at https://revenue -pa.custhelp.com/.

Readers should create a realistic budget and stick to it. A budget can help ensure people do not spend more than they earn, help them keep their spending priorities in check, and advance them toward using their money wisely. A basic budgeting tool is the 50/20/30 rule, also known as the needs/savings/wants rule. It entails spending only up to 50% of one’s after-tax income on essentials, such as housing and food;

If one payday seems to have more financial obligations than another, a person may contact his or her credit card company or lender to see if their billing cycle can be adjusted. In this way, a person may space out their bill payments to help them make all their payments without struggling financially for part of the month. much they owe and how much they are paying in interest so they may make a plan to tackle their debt. Readers may strategically pay off debt by adopting the debt avalanche method. This method requires readers to make minimum payments on all their debts while focusing their main debt payoff on a single account. Instead of targeting accrued balances, a person using this method prioritizes high-interest debt to save money in the long run. As one debt is paid off, the amount that was being submitting as the minimum payment for that debt is added to the monthly payments for the person’s next high-interest balance. By the time a person reaches the last debt on their

list, they will be able to eliminate large chunks of it each month, speeding up the debt payoff process. Readers may also consider automating savings and making saving money a top financial priority. To make saving money effortless, people may have part of their paycheck automatically deposited into a savings account, or they may set up a regular transfer of funds. This way, they will not be tempted to spend the money elsewhere. Financial emergencies, such as a job loss, reduced hours, an illness, or major vehicle or home repairs, can strike at any time, so people should set money aside in an emergency fund as well. Additionally, readers should plan for their future. It can be

easy to get distracted with spending on current obligations and wants, but these decisions can impact one’s financial future and, in turn, one’s credit score. Whether a person hopes to apply for a mortgage, purchase a car or open a new credit card in the future, his or her credit score is used to determine creditworthiness. The five main factors that determine one’s credit score are payment history, inquiries, average credit age, credit utilization and variety of accounts. Readers should keep in mind that missing payments or applying to several lenders at once could drop their credit score significantly, and new credit card inquiries will remain on their credit report for two years.

Spring officially kicked off on March 19 and National Cleaning Week began on March 22. While readers may find themselves cleaning their homes, TopCashback.com’s personal finance expert, Rebecca Gramuglia, recommends that people tidy other areas of their lives as well, including their personal finances. To help organize their finances, readers may consider the following tips. Readers should set up a system for tracking their spending and storing information related to their personal finances. To log spending, readers may consider creating a spreadsheet. They should store receipts, bank statements, bills, medical insurance information and other important documents using a filing system that works for them,

are the quickest way to access help while 211 experiences higher-than-usual call volumes, but Pennsylvanians can also dial 211 on their landline or mobile phone to be connected to a resource navigator. Individuals with immediate needs related to the COVID-19 crisis can also access resources and updates at www.uwp.org /pacovid. This page guides members of the public with the latest information on relief legislation, breaking news and resources to access help with basic needs like housing, food and utility assistance. Pennsylvanians who are uncertain where to give can consider one of the local COVID-19 response funds that have been set up across the state by local United Ways. Links to those funds are available at www .uwp.org/covid19support. This is also a challenging time for nonprofits in Pennsylvania, especially those which provide life-sustaining and essential services. This includes the network of charitable food banks and pantries, homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, and residential facilities caring for vulnerable populations including children and seniors. To support all nonprofits, United Way of Pennsylvania has created a Nonprofit COVID-19 resource hub, updated daily with need-to-know information, especially policy decisions that impact the operations of these nonprofits, and the Pennsylvanians they serve. This information will be reviewed and updated several times per day until the crisis ends. The nonprofit resource hub can be accessed at w w w. u w p . o r g / c o v i d 1 9 n o n profithub. All people-serving organizations, such as human service agencies, churches, and community service organizations are urged to update their information for the PA 211 resource

All others are invited to submit their information through a Google form located at www.uwp.org/211gethelp. PA 211 is a statewide telephone, text and self-serve web search for health and human

Known as the largest private funder of the 211 network in Pennsylvania, United Ways continue to strengthen and support 211 as another way to build stronger communities and create opportunities for all.

Extension Modifies Services risk. These producer consultations and collaborative research projects are undertaken in support of what the state of Pennsylvania has designated as essential agricultural businesses, including farms, food processors, and grocers, which are critical in maintaining the food supply and are considered life-sustaining. In accordance with Gov. Tom Wolf’s executive order concerning closures, Penn State Extension offices in all 67 counties are closed until further notice. However, county-based educators and staff will continue working remotely. Residents who have questions or need assistance may call 877345-0691. In addition, information about county Extension offices can be found on the previously mentioned website. County office webpages contain a directory with contact information for individual educators and staff members, who can assist, in many cases, by email or phone. The college will continue to provide other critical services, but with modified services, staffing or formats. The services include Penn State Animal Diagnostic Laboratory, Agricultural Analytical Services Laboratory, Spotted Lanternfly Call Center, Plant Disease Clinic, 4-H youth development programs, and Penn State Berkey Creamery. Readers may obtain details of changes by visiting the aforementioned website. Penn State Meats Laboratory, which ordinarily has weekly public sales during the spring and fall semesters, is closed until further notice, and the lab’s annual Easter ham sale was canceled.

COTA Seeks Assistance From Public The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) was founded in April 1986 when residents of Bloomington, Ind., rallied around a toddler who needed a lifesaving liver transplant. For more than three decades, COTA has assisted thousands of transplant families by helping to raise funds for transplant-related expenses. COTA has built extensive volunteer networks across the nation

Tips On Freezing Milk Offered American Dairy Association North East has posted directions for freezing milk. This information is recommended for people who want to stock up on milk but worry about it expiring before they can safely return to a grocery store. Readers should begin by considering the space they have in their freezer. If they do not have room for a number of large milk gallons, they may think about stocking up on half-gallons and quarts of fresh milk. People should drink some of

the milk in a container before freezing it. This step will create some space for the milk to expand safely when it freezes. People should leave one to two inches of empty space in each container. Readers are advised to thaw their frozen milk in a refrigerator, not at room temperature. After the milk is thawed, they should shake it before drinking it. To learn more about freezing milk, readers may visit www .americandairy.com.

The ever-evolving coronavirus /COVID-19 situation has prompted additional changes to Penn State Extension programming and operations across Pennsylvania, as well as other public services offered by Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences. The college’s research conducted through its nine academic departments and at its research and Extension centers across the state - will continue in support of Pennsylvania agriculture, the state’s food system, and the well-being of citizens in the commonwealth. Steps are being taken to safeguard the health and safety of the Extension’s personnel, partners, and collaborators, according to Steven Loerch, the college’s senior associate dean. The college also continues its educational mission through remote teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses. Penn State Extension had announced previously that all public, in-person events it sponsors, including workshops, conferences, and meetings, through April 5 would be canceled, postponed, or moved online. These cancellations and postponements now have been extended through Friday, May 15. Registered event participants will be notified of cancellations and will receive refunds if they paid registration fees. Although the organization is limiting face-to-face programs, Extension educators are shifting to provide extensive educational programs and information at https://extension.psu.edu. Educators will continue on-farm visits and research, while following disease-control guidelines to minimize
