OJR family offers book sharing box
BY FRANCINE FULTONBook sharing boxes, which invite readers to take a book or leave a book, are popping up throughout the area, including the Owen J. Roberts School District, home of the Yoder Book Nook.
Located at 87 Hill Church Road, Spring City, the book sharing box was the idea of Elysia Yoder, a student at French Creek Elementary School. “It was installed in the winter of 2023 as Elysia’s ninth birthday present,” said Elysia’s mom, Amanda. “It was what she wanted. She wanted to share and trade books.”
The Yoder Book Nook contains books for both children and adults. The family has established a Facebook page to promote the library at www.facebook.com /YBNSpringCity, where it lists books available in the library. Readers are also invited to share what they are reading on the Facebook page.
BY FRANCINE FULTONInconjunction with its monthly flea market, St. Peter United Church of Christ (UCC) will hold a Garden Bazaar on Saturday, May 13, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Items for sale will include plants, pots and outdoor decor. Homemade baked goods and breakfast and lunch items will also be available to eat in or take out.
The Garden Bazaar will consist of plants donated by church members as well as flowers such as petunias and geraniums. There will also be an assortment of succulents available. “We will have perennials and houseplants, and to supplement, we will buy annuals (that will be for sale),”
said church member Marcia Bittner, one of the event organizers. “We will have gently used pots and garden accessories and garden crates that we will paint and decorate.”
Bittner noted that this is the third year for the event, which is being held the day before Mother’s Day. “For years, we have had a Christmas bazaar, and we thought this is such a nice time of year (and) we should do something in the spring,” she said. “We thought we would draw a lot of people who might want to get flowers for their mom. We will also have gifts and a baked (goods) table in case people want to take home desserts for Mother’s Day or special treats.”
The event will be held rain or
shine. In the event of rain, Garden Bazaar items will be displayed in the church pavilion.
In addition to the flea markets, held on the second Saturday of every month, community dinners are offered at the church on the last Friday of each month from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The meal is free, but a collection jar is available on the table where the coffee and desserts are served so that people can donate a freewill offering.
“We serve between 25 and 30 people,” noted church member Sharon McFarland. “It’s a good thing (for the community), and we feel good doing it.”
The food is prepared by church member Paul Baringer. Church
volunteers help prepare, serve and clean up after the meal.
McFarland noted that because of the pandemic, the way the meal is served has been changed from buffet style. Instead, people sit at the tables, and church volunteers come and take their orders and then bring their entrees to them.
The next scheduled community dinner will take place on Friday, April 28, and the next flea market will be held on Saturday, June 10.
St. Peter UCC is located on Route 23 in Knauertown. For GPS users, the church’s address is 1920 Ridge Road, Pottstown. For more information, call the church office at 610-469-9690 or visit www.stpeterucc.org or www. facebook.com/stpeterunitedchurch.
Elysia and her sister, Katie, who is a student at East Vincent Elementary School, also enjoy checking out Little Free Libraries (LFLs) in the area, including the Stoney Run Farms LFL at 206 Parkview Blvd., Spring City, and the Ellis Woods Park LFL, which is located in front of the park playground at 855 Ellis Woods Road, Pottstown.
“Elysia is a member of Brownie Girl Scout Troop 4219,” Amanda said. “We are hoping to start fundraising and building more (book sharing boxes) for other areas, but for now, Elysia enjoys checking the library to see if there’s anything new.”
Other local book sharing boxes that are registered with the LFL organization include the following: American Legion Post 537, See Yoder Book Nook pg 3

Veterans Affairs benefits reported
In January, Chester County veterans received more federal benefit payouts - excluding survivor and pension benefitsthan any other county in Pennsylvania, according to the Chester County Department of Veterans Affairs. Over $3 million was paid to veterans in January, nearly $500,000 more than Berks County, which was ranked second.
The mission of Veterans Affairs is to provide information and guidance that makes it easier for veterans and their families to get the most out of the benefits that they are entitled to under county, state, and federal laws.
The Veterans Affairs Central Office in Washington, D.C., is the source of a monthly report that shows a breakdown by county of benefits payouts and the number of claimants.
