Gladys is not ready to go, he arranges to have a series of visitors stop by to meet her. He also gives her a taste of what life might be like in a nursing home. “It’s a spoof of ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ Like Alice, Gladys meets a bunch of different people,” said Hayley Hopkins, who plays Gladys. “It’s also a mother-daughter play, but they never interact. Gladys is getting ready to die and Doris, her daughter, is getting ready to lose her mom.” Despite the dark subject matter, Burkholder said the play is funny and will cause audiences to consider their own purpose in life. “A lot of the jokes are smart. You have to think about them a little bit,” he said. The play is based on the book written by Rosemary Frisino Toohey. It was first produced in 1999 as part of the Baltimore Playwrights Festival. Burkholder said the Players are making it their own. “The script doesn’t give See “Gladys” pg 5

Albert from pg 1 “We said, ‘Let’s get this dog up here,’” said Bauer. “He needed the right rescue and the right setting for him to thrive.” She noted that Albert’s wheelchair, also known as a wheelie cart, was donated by Rescue Rollers in Ohio. Albert was examined by the rescue vet and by a neurologist. Through diagnostic testing they were able to determine that Albert suffered at least one lumbar spinal fracture, most likely from trauma. This has caused paralysis from mid-back down. Unfortunately, since it is not a recent fracture, surgical intervention is not an option. Albert is not in pain, and he is expected to grow and flourish as any other dog. Albert is now about 5 months old and weighs 35 pounds. “We think, but we don’t know for sure, that he is a Lab/hound mix,” Bauer noted. Those interested in adopting Albert may email luckydawgar@ gmail.com or fill out an application at www.luckydawganimal rescue.com. “We want to make sure he goes to the appropriate adopter who wants to care for his special needs,” Bauer said. Donations are also being accepted for Albert’s care and to finance the cost of a new wheelie cart that he will need as he grows. Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue is a nonprofit, no-kill, all-volunteer organization. The organization relies on volunteers to foster pets until forever homes can be found. Some cats that have been rescued by the organization but are not in foster care can be adopted from Pet Valu stores, including the ones at 144 Eagleview Blvd. in Lionville; at 408 Commons Drive, Parkesburg; and at 215 Lancaster Ave., Frazer. Bauer said the organization’s biggest need is for foster families for both cats and dogs. Foster families must complete an application, provide veterinarian references and take part in a home visit. Food, a crate and veterinarian care are provided. Those interested in fostering may visit www.luckydawganimal rescue.com for more details.

a lot of direction about how they want it to be done. The hardest part is figuring out what works best for everybody,” he said, noting that the production does not rely on costuming or scenery. “There are three sets - a kitchen, a retirement home and a funeral home. It’s pretty much conversations. There is a lot of banter.” Burkholder, making his directorial debut, has appeared as a student in the Community Homeschool Players’ past productions, including “The Matchmaker” and “The Importance of Being Earnest.” “Everyone is super talented and also really easy to work with,” he said of the cast and crew.
In addition to Hayley, the cast includes Nicole Burkholder, Ashley Porter, Taylor Brown, Seerena Petersen, Jesse Burkholder, Brenna Ezard, Carisa Petersen, Kayla Brown and Josiah Musser. The stage crew includes Valerie Gerace, Lauren Dymond, Kirsten Musser, Sienna Brown, Ezekiel Petersen and Jadon Chambers. “We are so much more than bingo,” said Bill Pierce, executive director of the Coatesville Area Senior Center (CASC), when describing all of the events and classes that are currently being offered at the facility. Programs in May will include a talk on nutrition, a technology class, a Cinco de Mayo party and a Mother’s Day Tea Party. CASC, which is open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., is located in the former CareerLink building at 250 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (formerly Harmony Street), Coatesville. The facility opened in September 2016 at its current location after being housed at 22 N. Fifth St. in Coatesville for more than 20 years. Spearheading the new programming is George Ramon, the program and activities director and assistant executive director, who began working at the center in December of 2018. His visible presence and interaction with the seniors have helped make CASC a popular place for seniors to spend time. “You can come in, eat, hang, grab a cup of coffee and make a friend,” said Ramon. “What’s nice is that people have direct access to me, so if they are interested in doing (a program), we will put it on the schedule.” Pierce said that Ramon’s enthusiasm and the wide selection of programming have made the senior center grow and thrive since its relocation. “Not long after we moved in here, we averaged 15 to 20 people a day; now we average about 95 to 120 people a day,” Pierce noted. “Judging by attendance, I think (everyone knows) we’re here.” Seniors are asked to pay a yearly fee to join the CASC. However, membership is not required to enjoy programming, breakfast and lunch. Meal reservations are required by contacting the senior center five days in advance at 610-383-6900. The CASC serves the communities of Coatesville, Atglen, Elverson, Honey Brook Borough and Township, Modena, Parkesburg, South Coatesville and Thorndale, as well as Wallace, Caln, West Caln, East Fallowfield and Valley townships. “CASC serves 14 municipalities around the city of Coatesville and is open to (people) age 50 and better,” said Pierce. Pierce pointed out that many members use Rover Transportation to travel to the center, while about 10 percent of members are within walking distance. Regularly scheduled CASC programs include a craft club, a chess club, a culinary club and a knitting/crocheting club called Knit Knots. Exercise programs are also offered, including Zumba, yoga and line dancing. Pierce said that in addition to recreational activities, senior centers have a responsibility to older adults to offer educational See CASC pg 11

There will be a dental demonstration by Katelyn Duncan of Duncan Equine Dental Services and a presentation by Dean Stoltzfus, Stoltzfus Feed & Supply’s equine nutrition expert. Representatives from Lasata Farm, a nonprofit organization that provides therapeutic riding and horsemanship lessons to those with disabilities, will also provide a demonstration. “They adopted three of our (miniature horses) that they use for children,” Geiger noted. Natural horsemanship trainer Sam Smucker will provide a behavioral horse training session. A fee will be charged, and preregistration is required. Sessions will include Under Saddle, Trailering and Young Horse Issues. To register, readers may call 610-864-6374 or email Lapspa@hotmail.com. Beverages and snacks, including soft pretzels and homemade baked goods, will be available throughout the day for a suggested donation. Those who would like to reserve a spot in the tack sale may contact LAPS at Lapspa@ hotmail.com or 215-803-7704. LAPS, a nonprofit organization, enforces cruelty laws in Pennsylvania to protect large animals from abuse, neglect or cruelty through education, abuse investigation and adoptions. Geiger, LAPS board members and humane agents are all volunteers. During the open house, visitors will be able to meet animals that have been rescued and are available for adoption, including a Thoroughbred horse, a pony
and a miniature horse. “This is where the animals are brought and prepared for adoption,” Geiger explained. “If (the new owners) move or can’t afford to keep it, the animal comes back. It’s a lifetime commitment.” LAPS rescues farm animals, including horses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, donkeys, mules and burros. “LAPS was incorporated in 1988. The local SPCA at the time could not rescue large animals and there was no one to call if someone saw a horse being abused and that’s how we got started,” Geiger said. “What makes us unique is that we have no paid staff and we do not pay our humane agents.” According to www.largeanimal protectionsociety.org, the humane agency has state authority to investigate cruelty complaints and prosecute offenders in order to enforce Pennsylvania’s animal cruelty laws in Chester, Delaware, and Lancaster
counties. When a complaint is issued and verified, LAPS humane officers will investigate. “We (first) try to educate the animal owner and give them time to remedy the situation, unless it is a severe case,” Geiger explained. If necessary, LAPS will remove the animal and prosecute the owner. “We rehabilitate (the animals) and find homes for them,” she said. “We use New Bolton Center and local vets and we have caretakers that live at the farm.” She said that the organization recently rescued New Zealand Arapawa goats, which is an endangered species of goats. Some of the animals have already been adopted. For more information about LAPS and the open house, readers may visit www.largeanimal protectionsociety.org or www. facebook.com/laps.pennsylvania. Those who wish to report animal abuse should call 610-869-9880.
The Large Animal Protection Society, which rescues farm animals including horses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, donkeys, mules and burros, will hold an open house to celebrate 30 years of service on May 4 at its facility in Cochranville.

Cordell Huyard, director of the Cavod Theatre production of “Shrek The Musical Jr.,” featuring Cavod Academy student actors, is thrilled to be presenting a show that he feels was such a good choice for the organization. “(The show) fits Cavod really well,” he said. “It’s familyfriendly.” Huyard also deemed the music “incredible,” noting that several of the more than 30 musical numbers should resonate with audience members. “Shrek” will be staged at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland. The show will be presented at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 3; at 2 and 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 4; and at 2 and 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 5. The stage show closely follows the plot of the 2001 DreamWorks film, in which a large, green ogre named Shrek, played by Lincoln Everett, finds his swamp taken over by fairytale creatures that had been thrown out of the kingdom of Duloc by
Lord Farquaad, played by Noah Durling. Accompanied by a talkative Donkey, played by Josiah Henne, Shrek embarks on a mission to regain his swamp. In exchange for his swamp, he must rescue Princess Fiona, played by Audrey Pavlica, whom Farquaad plans to marry. As the adventure unfolds, Shrek and Fiona find themselves following a road they never expected to travel, resulting in comedy, music, and love. Fresh off his role as Colin in the Cavod Theatre production of “The Secret Garden,” Everett is working to perfect the role of the rough swamp dweller. “It has been a fun challenge for (Everett) to take away the grace and polish and be an ogre,” said Huyard. “We feel there’s a lot of growth (in this role), and … he is doing really well.” Henne was already somewhat prepared for his part as Donkey, having played an animal in a previous Cavod production. “(Henne) was Pumbaa in our ‘Lion King’ production,” said Huyard. “He has grown (as an
actor) since then. His (acting) instincts on stage have really (matured).” According to Huyard, the material will offer a number of the students a unique acting experience. “There are these fantastic, crazy fairytale characters,” said Huyard. “(The show will) give the students a chance to step out of their comfort zone and be something different than humans.” Huyard added that “Shrek The Musical Jr.” will provide challenges for a number of students because so many of the roles have moments in the spotlight. “Many characters have solos,” said Huyard, who noted that he loves the way the message of the story resonates with the mission of Cavod. “The whole story of ‘Shrek’ is that everyone is different and special and that should be celebrated,” he said. With the popularity of the 2001 DreamWorks film and its sequels, Cavod acting students ages 8 to 17 who auditioned for the show were familiar with the material. The cast of nearly 50
will be costumed by Jessica Horn in garb that suggests their characters, but will not make it uncomfortable to sing and dance. Makeup will be provided by Emily Johnson. “They have a big task in front of them,” said Huyard of Horn and Johnson. “I trust them.” Musical numbers that Huyard expects will be memorable will include “I Know It’s Today,” sung by the three females who play Fiona. “The young version (played by Emma Byrom), teenage version (played by Riley Fidler), and adult version of Fiona will all sing this song together,” he said. “I’m a Believer,” a pop tune audience members should recognize, will be part of the show, along with a song about Duloc that is a spoof on “It’s a Small World After All.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may be available at the door for a higher price.

The technique used in these paintings is considered different from her later works. Tremblay was born Myrtle Cobb in Albion, Mich., in 1908. In her youth, she taught herself

Tremblay earned a Bachelor of Science from Central Michigan University before attending the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Art Center in New York. this period that the works that will be on display at NHAHS were created. In the 1940s, Tremblay sketched servicemen and servicewomen for the United Services Organization in Detroit and the American Theater Wing in New York City. Tremblay and her husband moved to New Holland in 1952 when her husband went to work for New Holland Machine as a photographer. Tremblay remained in New Holland until she died at the age of 102. Her works, for which she had received many awards, were displayed and sold throughout the county, often to help raise funds for local organizations. NHAHS board member Don Horning noted that the museum received the donation of the artwork in July of 2017. Don asked members of the Lancaster art community to help evaluate the pieces. A decision was made to tell Tremblay’s story, including a written narrative, along with examples of her art. In October 2018, Win Reber, a retired art teacher known for holding lectures on various artrelated topics for community groups, began helping to sort and catalog the art. “Win caught the vision, and we met, and he started working,” said Don, adding, “The goal is to preserve (Tremblay’s) memory.” Reber held a lecture on Tremblay in March and an abbreviated show of Tremblay’s international paintings was on display at Garden Spot Village in April. NHAHS is also grateful to Joyce Heberlein and Julia and Terry Swartz for their help in preserving Tremblay’s story. At least 10 of Tremblay’s works will be offered for sale during the exhibit. Funds raised by the sale of these paintings will help cover the costs of processing and preparing of the pieces. The community is invited to visit the exhibit at the NHAHS museum, located on the second floor of the Kauffman Building. The museum, which is handicapped-accessible, is currently open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Readers who would like more information may visit www.nhhistorical.com. Pictured on front: New Holland Area Historical Society representatives (from left) Don Horning, Wilbur Horning, and Lou Ann Miller display works of the late Myrtle Tremblay. The historical society museum, 207 E. Main St., New Holland, will host an exhibit of the artist’s works throughout the summer. A formal opening will be held at the museum on Sunday, May 19, at 2 p.m.
