Every other year, students from the Community Home School Learning Group take time to honor local veterans by holding a dinner at the Twin Valley Fire Company in Elverson. This year’s event, featuring a meal of homemade lasagna, was held on April 26. According to event organizer Lynne Burkholder, a member of the learning group’s steering committee, the dinner for veterans is put on by the EnLIST class, which stands for Engaging Seventh- and Eighth-Graders in Learning Styles, Interesting People, Speeches and Team-Building Exercises. The dinner is held as part of the TeamBuilding portion of the curriculum. Burkholder said that a group of 12 students, including high-schoolers and seventh- and eighth-graders, worked
together to host the event, which included inviting local veterans from all military conflicts. “The kids who are part of the class first invite people that they know who are veterans, and it (expands) from there,” said Burkholder. This is the sixth time that the EnLIST class has held the event. This year’s dinner was attended by 15 veterans with their spouses and other family members. Veterans included those who served in Afghanistan all the way back to World War II. Burkholder noted that the event is an opportunity for the guests to share information with the students about their time of service. Following dinner, the veterans are invited to speak about their experiences if they choose to. “They are the only program; they share,” she said.

In honor of Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12, Educational Resource Development Trust (ERDT) recognizes the women in Lancaster and Chester counties who take the role of exchange student mom every academic year. They open their hearts and homes to teenagers from all over the world through the SHARE! High School Exchange Program. ERDT/SHARE! is a nonprofit foundation that has been providing host family placement for international high school exchange students since 1980. Designated by the U.S. Department of State to act as the legal sponsor for the students during their stay, ERDT coordinators liaise between the students, volunteer host families, and schools to ensure the best possible experience is had by everyone. Students come to the program from more than 30 different countries. They choose to stay for an academic semester or year, come with their own spending money, and are insured. They expect to become an active, participating member of their host family, sharing in the fun times as well as helping with the chores. To learn more about hosting a foreign exchange student for the upcoming academic year or semester, readers may contact Shannon Portales at 281-798-5970.

Cars For Kacie Car Show Slated The Cars for Kacie Car Show, an indoor/outdoor car, truck, and motorcycle show, will take place on Saturday, May 11, at the Classic Auto Mall, 6180 Morgantown Road, Morgantown. The rain date will be Saturday, May 18. The show aims to be the largest car show and opioid recovery show on the East Coast. The show will benefit Kacie’s Cause, which was founded six years ago when Andy Rumford’s 23-year-old daughter, Kacie Erin Rumford, died of an overdose. The Cars for Kacie show was also started at that time to raise money for Kacie’s Cause, a 501(c)(3) charitable entity dedicated to saving lives and spreading awareness about the nationwide opioid epidemic. Registration will be from 8 to 11 a.m., with the show taking place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will feature indoor vendors and exhibitors as well as an outdoor car show that organizers anticipate will attract hundreds of show cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Awards will be given out at 3 p.m. The top 30 will receive 40-inch
floor trophies, which will be given out by families that have lost a loved one to addiction. There will also be more than 35 specialty category plaques, along with custommade trophies. Goodie bags will also be handed out. There will be almost a dozen life-size “Hot Wheels” Camaros attending from as far away as Maine, Michigan, and West Virginia. Other cars on display inside will include a 350K Corvette from the movie “Ghost Rider” with more than 2,000 LED lights and custom-painted “Ghost Rider” graphics. Nostalgia Funny Car Racing team’s Nightmare will also be on hand to rev up its engine and provide a rare photo op session. The mall’s corridors, spanning approximately a quarter-mile from end to end, will be filled with automotive vendors and vendors that sell custom-made lamps, clocks, and air filters made from the customer’s personal vehicle models and/or personalized with their names or logos. Another vendor will offer 3-D statues made from photographs taken on-site.
There will be workshops on metal finishing and radiator repair and fabrication, and the Swing Kats dance troupe will perform an hour of jive and swing dancing to ’50s music. Max, a police dog, will be present with his handler, police chief Curt Martinez, to give a drug sniffing demonstration. An opioid seminar will be presented, and free naloxone training will be available. Rob Strauber of Recovery Centers of America will be a guest speaker during the event. Numerous food vendors will be on hand selling items such as burgers, pizza, cheesesteaks, smoothies, cupcakes, and pretzels. Preregistration is available at a discount until the day of the show and can be completed at www.carsforkacie.com. Vehicle owners may register for a higher fee on the day of the show. For additional details, readers may contact Johnny Pappas, event producer, at 703-477-9899 or johnny1957@ptd.net or visit the event website. 26th Friendship Fest And Third 5K Run Planned By Ann Mead Ash
According to Friendship Community volunteer coordinator Phil Horning, the atmosphere at the organization’s annual Friendship Fest, Auction, and 5K Run is … well, festive. “It’s a lot of fun,” said Horning. “It attracts children and families, and the individuals we support love coming (to the event).” Laurel Spagnolo, director of advancement with Friendship, added that organizers enjoy seeing residents from nearby Landis Homes visiting the fest. Friendship Community, a ministry that helps individuals with developmental disabilities to impact the world with their capabilities, will hold its 2019 Fest, Auction, and 5K, rain or shine, on Saturday, May 11, beginning at 7 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The day will open with a cafeteria-style pancake and sausage breakfast and a plant sale. Two years ago, the organization added a 5K run/walk to the annual event. Registration for this year’s 5K is now open at www.friendship community.net, or individuals may pick up brochures at the Friendship office. Registration will be discounted through Friday, May 10, and registration will open at 7 a.m. on the day of the run, with the run beginning at 8 a.m. Registrants will receive a goodie bag and a T-shirt while supplies are available. Horning noted that those who sign up for the 5K will have the opportunity to set up their own web page and to request sponsorships from friends and family members if they wish. Runners will be entitled to a free breakfast at the fest. The general auction will begin at 9 a.m. Spagnolo noted that a variety of items are being collected for the auction. She said that purses, household items, quilts, gift certificates, gift baskets, and tickets to local attractions and sports competitions are among the many items organizers plan to have available for bidders. The Friendship Heart Gallery will have a tent filled with artwork available for purchase. The gallery showcases work through which individuals with intellectual disabilities express themselves artistically. Friendship’s Meaningful Day Academy program, which offers Friendship clients an opportunity to contribute to the community, will also have a tent at the fest. Both tents will be

She is sent to live with her reclusive uncle, Archibald Craven, and his brother, Dr. Neville Craven, in a secluded British manor. Upon arriving, Mary finds that the house is visited by the spirit of her Aunt Lily, Archibald’s late wife, who died giving birth to their bedridden son, Colin. The American Cancer Society (ACS) will present the 2019 Relay For Life of Central Chester County on the track at the Downingtown West High School, 445 Manor Ave., Downingtown. The event will begin on Saturday, May 18, at 10 a.m. and run until midnight. During the event, members from participating teams walk or run continuously around the track to signify that cancer never sleeps. This year’s Relay marks the 25th anniversary of the local event, and it is also is the debut of a new 14hour format, which replaces the traditional 24-hour Relay. “When we first started this, there were no 5Ks, 10Ks or other (similar) events on weekends. We thought we would try the shortened version to see if that would attract more people,” said Dawn Kirsch, event chair, when explaining the decision to shorten the event. The event, themed “Hope Across the Galaxy,” will begin with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. A Survivor Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at 6 p.m., and a Luminaria Ceremony will start at 9 p.m. During this ceremony, the track will be lined with candlelit luminaria bags that have been designated in memory of those who lost their lives to cancer and in honor of survivors. Luminarias can be purchased up until 8:30 p.m. To keep runners and walkers entertained throughout the
event, many activities have been planned. Touch a Truck will be offered for children from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “There will be Zumba, campsite decorating, a Star Wars costume contest and a lightsaber balloon game,” said Kirsch. “From 3 to 4 p.m., area elementary and middle school students, parents and teachers are invited to walk together during the Relay Recess Laps.” Main Line Health representatives will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to offer information, massages and a photo booth, and local hospitals will offer information in the Live Your BEST Tent. The Downingtown Music Parents concession stand will be open, offering food and beverages for sale. The event will be held rain or shine. In the event of severe weather, activities will be held in the school gym. The Relay For Life of Central Chester County began at West Chester University 25 years ago. “(It moved) to Downingtown West High School around 1997 or ’98 (and was held there) until 2000,” Kirsch explained. “In 2001 and 2002, we held our event at West Chester University while Downingtown created a new track and field area. We returned to Downingtown West in 2003, and (our Relay) has been there ever since.” She said that residents from throughout Chester County take
part in the Relay. “We mostly get people from West Chester, Downingtown, Exton, Coatesville and Chester Springs,” she said, noting that people from the Parkesburg and Twin Valley areas also participate as Relays are no longer held in those areas. Kirsch encourages past participants in the Survivor Ceremony to return to attend the 25th anniversary event. “The thing I love the most is that Relay is for all survivors, whatever cancer they have and from any age from 2 to 100,” Kirsch commented. “It’s a chance for the community to celebrate people’s survivorship together.” Kirsch added that this year’s event is dedicated to former team captain and Uwchlan Hills Elementary School art teacher Krissy Krygiel Evans, who passed away suddenly last fall. Krygiel Evans hosted several Relay Recess events at the Downingtown school.
Monies raised at Relay For Life fund cancer research, education and prevention programs and services and support programs for cancer patients. More information about the ACS is available by calling 800-2272345 or visiting www.cancer.org. For more information on registering a team, to make a donation or to learn about sponsorship and volunteer opportunities, readers may visit www.relayforlife.org/paccc or www.facebook.com/RFLofCCC. annual Relay For Life of Central Chester County will take place on May 18 at Downingtown West High School. During the event, participants from various teams will walk or run continuously around the track for 14 hours to signify that cancer never sleeps.

(worth of underwear donated to veterans in need),” said David Turner Sr., founder and president of DD831. DD831 is named for David Turner Jr., who was a cashier at the canteen at the VA hospital when he died in 2009 at the age of 20 from a suspected heart arrhythmia. While working there, he discovered that many of the veterans did not have basic necessities such as underwear and socks. Turner explained that the first David’s Drive picnic was held on May 22, 2010, on what would have been David’s 21st birthday. At the time, the family chose to celebrate David’s life with a picnic in the backyard and to honor his wish to help veterans by holding an underwear drive for veterans. As a way to honor David’s memory and to continue the charitable work in his name, the
from pg 1 family started the DD831 charity in 2010. The 831 symbolizes the phrase “I love you” because the phrase contains eight letters and three words that have one meaning. Turner said that people are invited to drop by on May 19 with their donations and enjoy a bite to eat. There will also be picnic games, including volleyball and horseshoes. “Triple Fresh Market will give us four hours of catering,” Turner said. “David worked there when he was kid, and they have been good to David’s Drive.” On Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, DD831 volunteers will meet at East Fallowfield Park and then travel to the Coatesville VA to drop off donated items that were collected during the David’s Drive picnic. Residents may drop off donations at the park prior to the start of the trip. “ We will leave the park at
noon and do a procession/parade to the VA to drop off the donations. Modena and Westwood fire companies will join us and some police departments in the area,” said Turner, noting that the charity is successful because of the community that supports it. “If people didn’t show up and donate, we would not be delivering truckloads of underwear.” In addition to collecting necessities, David’s Drive sponsors social events for veterans. Last year, DD831 purchased tickets and provided transportation for veterans to attend a Philadelphia 76ers game and a preseason game of the Philadelphia Eagles. It has also sponsored two fishing trips for about a dozen veterans. Every Christmas, volunteers wrap and distribute 1,000 gifts for patients at the Coatesville, Southeastern Pennsylvania and Lebanon VA medical centers. In April this year, David’s Drive provided donated guitars to the VA, which recently imple-
mented a music program to teach veterans to play guitars. DD831 also assists veterans transitioning from homelessness to independent living through the Housing and Urban Development - Veterans Affairs Support Housing (HUD-VASH) program. The charity provides appliances, household goods, personal care products and financial assistance for rent and utilities. “More than 475 beds have been purchased for previously homeless veterans,” Turner reported. Most recently, the charity secured items, including small appliances, electronics and new clothing, from Hands In Service Inc., a charity based in Warrington. On May 1 from 2 to 4 p.m., veterans were invited to “shop” for the items on display in the Great Hall at the Coatesville VA at no cost. For more information about DD831, readers may email davidsdrive@verizon.net or visit www.davidsdrive831.org or www.facebook.com/davids.drive.

Jessee plans to attend West Virginia University to study animal science, and Hailey will attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania to major in biology. Brieanna Blair, who completed her internship at Kurtz Fish Hatchery in Elverson, was on hand to talk about her interest in becoming a marine biologist. “I want to work with turtles, dolphins, fish and (other sea life),” she said, noting obtaining a diving license will be part of her job requirements. Internships sixth-grade teachers at the middle school to bring a group of interns to share their experiences as interns with careers in the area,” explained Lynn Aldredge, TVMS sixth-grade language arts teacher. “It is very cool, and the students at both levels enjoy the interaction.” The program was held in three afternoon sessions, and the TVMS students rotated among the sixth-grade classrooms at TVMS to hear the guest speakers. Each session included a slide presentation and an opportunity for the students to ask questions of the high-schoolers. The industries represented ranged from engineering and business to astronomy and education. Kelly Miller, a TVHS senior, talked about her internship with Judge John Hipple in Pottstown, during which she completed filing and paperwork and observed several court cases. “There was a lot of listening involved in this internship,” she said. “I liked going to the hearings because it was interesting to hear both sides of the story.” She said that she was able to witness a range of legal cases in civil court, traffic court and criminal court. Kelly told the students that the internship program will be beneficial to them when they decide what career path they are interested in. “Not every school offers an internship program, so you should take advantage of it. It is hands-on learning,” she stated. TVHS seniors Hailey Taylor and Jessee Klunk, who aspire to become veterinarians, were on hand to talk about their experiences working as interns for several local vets. They were accompanied by Hailey’s dogs, Remi and Stella. “As an intern, they want you to ask a lot of questions and make

Members of the Chester County Youth Orchestra (CCYO) will present their 25th anniversary concert on Saturday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 10 W. Pleasant Grove Road, West Chester. Under the direction of Katrina Kelly and Mark Cellini, the orchestra will perform music from its inaugural season, including Overture to “The Magic Flute” by Mozart, Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 “Unfinished,” the “William Tell Overture” by Rossini, and “Peter and the Wolf ” by Prokofiev. State Sen. Andy Dinniman will be a special guest narrator for “Peter and the Wolf.” CCYO, sponsored by the Chester County Intermediate Unit, provides an opportunity for students in grades six to 12 to enjoy playing music with a full symphony orchestra and allows them to meet fellow musicians from school districts across Chester County and in nearby areas. Students are accepted by audition only. CCYO is dedicated to giving young musicians the chance to grow musically by performing challenging works from the standard orchestral literature, as well as music from the cinema and the Broadway stage. The students work on their performance skills and learn a wide variety of music. As members of the CCYO, students gain experience playing music of many different composers, styles and time periods. CCYO is seeking musically talented students ages 11 to 18 to participate. Audition dates for all instruments are posted at www.facebook.com/ccyorch. Tickets for the upcoming concert will be available at the door. There will be separate prices for adults and students, and a family rate will be available. Proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit Safe Harbor of Chester County, a nonprofit organization that provides housing, food and services to homeless single men and women in Chester County. CCYO student musicians recently helped cook meals for residents at Safe Harbor, which is CCYO’s charitable partner for 2018-19.
