Trumpeting his success
BY FRANCINE FULTONAs the school year winds down and students look forward to graduation, Twin Valley High School (TVHS) senior Patrick Skoniczin can reflect on the many musical successes he accomplished in his high school career.
Most recently, he qualified for the second year in a row to participate in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) annual All-State Festival held from April 17 to 20 in Erie. He was the only TVHS student who advanced to states.
To qualify, he won auditions and participated in the maximum number of music festivals that a student can qualify for in a season in all three disciplines - band, chorus and orchestra - at the county, district, regional and state levels.
A student is only allowed to participate in one discipline at the state level even if he or she qualified for all three as Patrick did. Patrick represented TVHS in the concert band, playing the trumpet. He was accompanied to states by his parents, Robert and Cheryl Skoniczin, and TVHS band director Robert Bennett.
“We rehearsed for around two to two and a half days to perform a concert at the end of the festival,” Patrick explained. “We also had a guest conductor, Dr. Alfred Watkins. He is a legend in the band world. It was great to work under his baton.”
Patrick noted that although the student musicians were from schools throughout the state of Pennsylvania, it was not hard for them to play together while performing in the concert, which featured five musical numbers.
“You play your first note, and it
sounds like a really good band right from the get-go. We work really well together, and we like to have a lot of fun,” he said.
Patrick said that he has become friends with many of the band students after participating musical competitions in middle and high schools. “Some of the people I have been doing festivals with for six or seven years now,” he noted. “They are practically as close as some of my friends at Twin Valley. Some of these people will be my colleagues when I go out into the music field later on in life.”
In addition to qualifying for states and playing in the concert band, Patrick’s original composition, Suite No. 1 for Concert Band, was chosen by the PMEA to be honored
as an outstanding selection in the Composition Program. The piece was recorded by the West Chester University (WCU) Wind Ensemble and was showcased during the conference in Erie.
“Usually, for me, it can take anywhere between a month to six months to get something like this completed to the point where I know it’s finished,” Patrick said, explaining his composing process. “I usually start by coming up with a theme in my head and then I develop that. From there, I sit at the piano and work things out, and then I take my music notation software that I have on my computer and plug in the notes for all the different (instrumental) parts.”
He said that hearing his original

Planning the future, preserving the past at Hopewell Furnace
BY FRANCINE FULTONHopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Elverson preserves an 18th- and 19th-century iron furnace complex and offers a variety of programming for the community. Heading it all is Jeff Jones, site manager, who recently shared information about what his job entails with the Community Courier.
Community Courier: What are some of your job duties?
Jones: I work to ensure day-today activities and longer-term projects that are coordinated and carried out appropriately amongst park staff. I work closest with the park staff that most often interact with the public via the visitor center and/or programming presented throughout the year. Together
we plan special events, regular programming offerings, as well as off-site activities to help increase the public’s awareness of, and hopefully interest in, Hopewell. I also represent the park with various local organizations made up of historic

CCACC to host annual car show in Morgantown
BY FRANCINE FULTONThe Chester County Antique Car Club (CCACC) will hold its 44th annual car show on Saturday, May 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Classic Auto Mall, 6180 Morgantown Road, Morgantown. The event, which is free to attend for spectators, will feature a display of antique and classic cars, street rods, trucks and motorcycles, as well as a flea market and food vendors. A DJ will provide music. Dash plaques will be awarded
to the first 200 participants, and all vehicle owners will be entered into a random drawing to win a cash prize. The drawing will take place at 3 p.m. Previously, CCACC held its annual car show on Memorial Day at the Kimberton Fairgrounds. “This is our third year in Morgantown,” noted CCACC board of directors member Bruce Swayze, event organizer. “It was a dual show with the Valley Forge Mustang Club. We wanted to change dates and reconfigure some things, so we decided to go

sites telling similar stories as Hopewell. Together we strive to cross-promote each other’s sites and programs along with being a support network. Additionally, I collaborate closely with our official partner group, the Friends of Hopewell Furnace.
Community Courier: What is it like working at a national historic site?
Jones: It’s pretty cool. So many people plan vacations and trips around national parks so it’s neat being a destination for them. You get to interact with a variety of folks, from those very familiar with the National Park Service or Hopewell Furnace specifically to those who have no idea what the site is about, and you get to open their eyes to all that the park has to tell and offer. You’ve got various laws, regulations and policies that guide how we must carry out certain tasks, but there are also details that can be developed more at the park level, so I’d say there’s a nice blend of structure and flexibility. You’ve got a broad support network between others along with regional and national offices. I previously worked in Washington, D.C., where walking to or from work in my uniform and flat hat often drew positive comments from passersby and even the occasional high five just for being a park ranger!
Community Courier: What would people be surprised to learn about Hopewell?
Jones: I find people are most surprised by the variety of topics and activities the site has to offer. You usually start with explaining the site’s role with the iron industry, which often leads to discussing a variety of technological advances and events that occurred throughout the 19th and 20th
century related to Hopewell. Then, you start touching on the physical site, and we’ve got the various historic structures available to check out, the miles of trails to explore, the historic apple orchard and the sheep and steer that make up our historic farm. The site is also a popular spot for all kinds of photo ops like graduations, engagements and annual family pictures.
Community Courier: What is your favorite part of the job?
Jones: I enjoy the variety my job has to offer. One moment I may be planning for a special event, the next I’m out in the field herding our sheep into their stall for the night. I enjoy being able to go for walks throughout the site either to check on something specific or to just go for a stroll. As a third-generation public servant, I take a lot of pride in working for my country and serving the American people. I’ve always loved history and loved telling people about history. Getting paid to carrying out a lot of tasks I’d happily do for free is a pretty sweet gig, and I try to regularly remind myself of how fortunate I am to have the career I do.
Community Courier: What do you do in your spare time?
Jones: I try to stay active but also ensure I’ve got sufficient down time to take it easy as well. Though my knees don’t allow me to run anymore, I try to average at least 3 and a half miles of walking a day. I very much enjoy traveling with my wife, Sarah, whether that be to a previously unvisited little town in Pennsylvania, going abroad or visiting close friends throughout the country. You can usually find me reading through a few books at a time, which often are related to history. I enjoy following various sports, but having grown up in the South, there will always be special place in my heart for all things NASCAR and college football. I’m usually able to make it to a race or two each year with friends, and for almost 10 years now, I’ve made it to at least one University of West Georgia football game a season (to support) my alma mater.
BISSELL Pet Foundation, a national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending pet homelessness, is prompting a national call for adoption once again this spring with its “Empty the Shelters” reduced-fee adoption event. The initiative began on May 1 and will run through Wednesday, May 15.
The Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Berks County is participating along with more than 410 shelters in 43 states. At the ARL, all cats and dogs over 6 months of age will have a reduced adoption
fee, and senior dogs and cats over 8 years will be free to adopt. All adopters must go through the ARL’s regular process to adopt, including the completion of an adoption profile and speaking with an adoption counselor to ensure that the pet they select is a good match for their home, family and lifestyle.
Adopters are encouraged to bring their family members and other house dogs to meet the pet they are interested in before completing the adoption. Dog adopters should bring cash or a

check to purchase a dog license, which is required at the time of adoption under Pennsylvania law. Adopters should also bring a cat carrier or a dog collar and leash; these items may also be purchased from the ARL.
During the last BISSELL adoption event, held in December 2023, 52 pets found a home through the ARL.
All interested adopters can visit www.berksarl.org/pets to view the available pets.

Berks LaunchBox receives grant to aid small businesses
The Berks LaunchBox powered by Penn State recently received a $125,000 grant from the County of Berks. The funding will be used to create microgrants for Berks County entrepreneurs. Of the total grant awarded, $12,000 will be set aside for Penn State Berks student entrepreneurs participating in the college’s Flemming Creativity, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development Center Customer Discovery Lab; these funds will be distributed to awardees in $1,000 increments.
The grant is part of the county’s IMAGINE Berks Strategic Economic Development Action Plan. The plan includes six areas of focus, with one area being small business and entrepreneurship. A key strategy in the plan is to support small businesses working to scale their operations to increase efficiency and achieve exponential growth.
The microgrant applications will be accepted during three submission periods per year over a three-year period. During the first and second submission periods, Berks County entrepreneurs

our own way. Morgantown loves car shows and greeted us with open arms.”
The show generally attracts between 250 and 300 cars. “The idea is that the cars are 25 years or older because that’s what signifies an antique car,” said Swayze.
A registration fee will be charged to vehicle owners. “The Brass Era cars, which generally (were manufactured through) 1915, are admitted free of charge,” Swayze noted. Those who register by Friday, May 10, will receive a discount. Registration will be accepted until noon on the day of the show.
A portion of all the registration fees will be donated to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a New Yorkbased charity that formed after the 9/11 tragedy. “They helped the families of people who died in the World Trade Center in New York and (continue to help the families of) any first responders, police and firemen killed in the line of duty,” noted Swayze.
CCACC club member Jeanie Cassidy added that those who attend the car show will also be able to visit the auto mall, which is a 336,000-square-foot space that houses a wide variety of classic cars. “It’s nice there because you can go through the mall at no charge,” she said, noting that the mall will be open until noon on May 25.
The car show will also feature a flea market, which is not limited to auto-related merchandise. “Vendors set up and sell all kinds of things from old records to kitchen gadgets as well as antique car parts,” Swayze added. According to www.ccacc
.club, the CCACC was formed “to foster interest in the collection and preservation of motorized vehicles of all types and ages/ years, as well as to perpetuate the lore and memories of early automobiling.”
Although it is termed an antique car club, members do not need to own an antique car or be a resident of Chester County to join the club. Rather, membership is open to anyone who has an interest in the hobby of preserving automobiles.
Members take part in car shows and cruise-ins throughout the area. General membership meetings are held on the fourth
Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. (with the exception of December) at the Chester County Council, Boy Scouts of America, 1 Scouting Way, Exton. Those interested in club membership may download an application that can be found on the CCACC website.
To learn more about the car show, to register a vehicle or to reserve a flea market space, visit the aforementioned website and choose “Car Show” from the homepage. More information is also available at www.facebook.com/ ChescoAcc.
In the event of inclement weather, the rain date for the car show is Sunday, May 26.
