n 1998, the Rotary Club of Twin Valley joined PennDOT’s Adopta-Highway program, agreeing to keep a 2.6-mile stretch of Route 23 in Elverson litter free. This year, club members decided to add a new fundraising component to their annual roadway cleanup day, calling it “Litter Into Literacy.” As part of the effort, the club asked for sponsors, with proceeds donated to the Honey Brook Community Library and the Village Library of Morgantown, as well as the Rock Hollow Woods Environmental Learning Center (RHWELC) in Birdsboro. Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsors were asked to donate a suggested amount per foot, yard or mile, respectively. Literacy Booster Sponsors were invited to donate an

They helped us advertise the event and solicit program sponsors.”

Parents with young children visited the Lancaster Barnstormers’ Fan Fest a bit early on April 16 for an opportunity to teach their children a lesson about the importance of saving money. It was part of the Ephrata National Bank (ENB) Pigs in the Park program designed to turn little ones into lifelong savers. During the event, ENB hid hundreds of piggy banks within the stadium for children to find before gameday activities began. Any child ages 2 to 12 who found a piggy bank was invited to take it to an ENB branch and have money deposited into an ENB Super Saver savings account in his or her name. Children were able to keep the banks and may continue saving for something special, making regular deposits into their savings accounts. Pigs in the Park events will continue at community parks throughout Lancaster, Chester and Lebanon counties on eight Saturdays throughout the summer. Pigs in the Park events will include the following: Saturday, May 21, Thomas P. Grater Community Park, Cloister Ave., Ephrata; Saturday, June 4, New Holland Park, 400-498 E. Jackson St., New Holland; Saturday, June 18, West Nantmeal Park, 455 N. Manor Road, Elverson; Saturday, July 9, Strasburg Community Park, 151 Precision Ave., Strasburg; Saturday, July 23, Manheim Park, 15 E. High

St., Manheim; Saturday, Aug. 6, Huffnagle Park, 20 Oak Lane, Quarryville; Saturday, Aug. 20, Denver Memorial Park, 801 Main St., Denver; and Saturday, Aug. 27, Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz. All events will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Children and their families are welcome to search for the piggy banks during the allotted time or while supplies last. Sit, Stay: Selecting An Easier-To-Train Dog Training is one of the most important ways to keep companion animals safe. When prospective pet owners begin looking for a new dog, one of the first thoughts that may come to mind is trainability and whether certain breeds are more easy to train than others. The pet food manufacturers at Honest Kitchen indicated that breed is just one of many factors that can make a difference in how easily a dog will be trained. For example, dogs that are food-motivated and enjoy being around people may be more easily trained than those without such traits. How the animal was

bred, raised and socialized can also play a part. The American Kennel Club reported that certain dogs are more willing to comply with owner requests, while others are bred to work independently and may be less likely to immediately respond to commands from their owners. Though there is no guarantee any dog will take to training, the following are some breeds that are generally considered training-friendly. - Border collies: Collies are bright and energetic dogs that like to herd with their agility and intelligence. - Australian shepherd:

Another herding dog, Aussies have a natural focus on their owners and are bred to work with those owners in challenging environments. - Doberman pinschers: Dobermans are smart and attentive to their owners. They have traditionally been employed as guard dogs and require careful training and socialization to be tolerant of strangers. - German shepherds: These workhorses serve many different roles because of their affinity for learning tasks. As with Dobermans, look for a well-socialized German shepherd to avoid anxiety and wariness of people. - Poodles: Poodles are popular because they do not shed much, but also because they are intelligent, obedient

and versatile. - Golden retrievers: Golden retrievers are not known as a family dog for nothing. Goldens are very intelligent and amiable, and they often will go to great lengths to please their owners. Labrador retrievers also take to training

well and are very affectionate. - Papillon: Smaller dogs are often viewed as stubborn or independent. However, papillons are incredibly smart and trainable and are naturally focused. The pet advisement site K9 of Mine warned that some of

the smartest, most trainable dogs may not necessarily be the easiest to live with. They can get bored easily and destroy things around the house if they cannot keep their minds occupied. This is a factor to consider when selecting a breed as well.

Hopefully, it will be a great season again.” A complete list of returning vendors and new vendors can be found at www.facebook .com/BirdsboroFarmersMarket by choosing Events and then “Opening Day!” A celebration by the Birdsboro American Legion will be featured at the market on Saturday, July 30. “Each week, we will try to have something new and a different theme,” said Thompson. “In July, we are teaming up with the American Legion, which is celebrating their 100th anniversary in July. They will have a dunk tank and games for kids.” “We’re hoping to (offer)

cooking classes - teaching people how to use the produce they get at the market,” she added. All local crafters and small businesses are invited to set up a booth at the farmers market; it is not necessary to be a resident of Birdsboro to participate. Those interested in selling items are asked to complete a vendor application. “We are looking for producers. (All items sold have) to be locally sourced,” Thompson pointed out. A link to the vendor application is available on the previously mentioned Facebook page. After opening day, the Birdsboro Farmers Market will be open on June 4 and 18; July 2, 16 and 30; Aug. 13 and 27; Sept. 10 and 24; and Oct. 8.

Dragon, a firefighter and the public information officer for the Birdsboro-Union Fire Department,

is the author of two children’s books, “ Were You Born a Dragon?” and “ Were You Born a Dragon Too?” Board member Christen Thompson noted that the market will have returning vendors, as well as new ones. “We have a new beef jerky vendor coming this year. Kraljevich explained that each duck ticket that is sold has a number that corresponds to a duck that will be placed in the water for the race. The rubber ducks will be dropped into Hay Creek under the bridge at First and Water streets by Birdsboro municipal workers. As the ducks float toward the finish line, the workers will follow behind in their hip waders to free any ducks that get stuck along the way. The first 11 ducks to cross the finish line and the very last duck to cross the finish line will be the winners. Cash prizes will be awarded to the “sponsors” of the 12 winning ducks. Local businesses, including Doyle Strong Foundation, J.P. Mascaro & Sons and Bachman’s Roofing, Building and Remodeling Inc., have donated the prize money for the winners. Proceeds from the Duck Derby will benefit the Boone Area Library. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the library, 129 N. Mill St., Birdsboro, during its hours of operation: on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 8 p.m.; and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A fee charged will be charged per duck, or people may purchase a Quack Pack of five tickets. Heritage Wool And Textile Day from England. As a young boy, there would have been work for him and his siblings, since the whole family would be involved in some part of the processing of wool and flax. Cloth produced in Berks County in the mid-18th century would have been made from materials grown locally.

DVGRR Sets Meet-And-Greet Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue will hold its monthly Meet and Greet the Goldens event from 10 a.m. to noon at its Golden Gateway facility, 60 Vera Cruz Road, Reinholds, on Saturday, May 14. The public is invited to meet and greet the golden retrievers and other

dogs that are available for adoption. Admission is free. Staff members will be on hand to answer questions, and food will be available for purchase. Photos are not permitted. For details, contact Inza at events@dvgrr.org or 717-484-4799.

Most families raised a few sheep and grew flax, a plant used to make linen. As early as 1738, a fulling mill was built on the Manatawny Creek. A fulling mill processed the woven cloth to shrink and soften the fibers. During the event on May 14, many of the processes needed to take the wool from the sheep to the weaver’s loom will be demonstrated. There will be sheep shearing and other hands-on demonstrations. Heritage breeds such as Hog Island and Jacob sheep will be on-site. An admission fee will be charged. There will be separate prices for adults, seniors and youths. Children age 5 and under will be admitted for free. The program is being sponsored and run by the
