Chester County Women’s Services in Coatesville, we make baby blankets and hats and pregnancy bags. They give women written material when they come in, and they can (put the items) in the bag to take home. “We make baby items, scarves, hats and mittens for Spanish Health Ministry in Kennett Square that they share with their clients when they come in, Mendenhall added. Since December 2018, the group has donated 22 baby blankets, 15 baby hats, 10 hats for adults and children, seven scarves and 21 lap robes. Arters explained that the group formed several years ago, at which point church members met in each other’s homes. She

said that became difficult because the meeting location would change monthly. “Originally we met in people’s homes and then we started meeting here (at the church), said Arters, who founded the group along with Erica Brumbach. “We just got together for fellowship with a common bond of knitting and crocheting. Then some needs came to our attention, particularly after people donated yarn to us. The lap robe (idea) was suggested by the one of our members whose father had been in hospice. Arters noted that members have expressed that joining the club has had unexpected benefits. For example, one member whose husband passed away while in hospice finds that making lap robes for the organization has helped in her healing processes. “We had another lady whose mother passed away, and she donated all of her yarn to us, Arters added. EBBC is located at 999 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Downingtown. For more information about the church, readers may visit www.eastbrandywine baptist.com. More information about the needlework group is available by emailing Arters at jarters751@comcast.net.

Among the items made by members of the East Brandywine Baptist Church needlework group are scarves, lap robes, hats and extra small hats for infants in the neonatal unit at Chester County Hospital.

On Sundays from May 19 through July 14, Living God Lutheran Church, 3200 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook, will be offering two activities. Admission will be free, though attendees are asked to consider bringing a nonperishable food item that the church will then donate to either the Honey Brook Food Pantry or Twin Valley Food Pantry. For more information, readers may call the church office at 610-273-9383. Yoga classes for beginners will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Participants are asked to wear appropriate exercise gear and bring their own mat. Line dancing and country dancing lessons will be given from 6 to 8 p.m. Lessons are designed for beginner/novice dancers, but there will be more advanced dances for those who have been dancing for some time. Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing and shoes, and children are welcome.

Relay For Life Selects Honorary Chair

R038298

The American Cancer Society has selected local cancer survivor Maria Colón to serve as honorary survivor chair for the 2019 Relay For Life of Central Chester County. The event, which will feature a new 14-hour format, will take place on Saturday, May 18, at Downingtown West High School, 445 Manor Ave., Downingtown. Relay For Life brings together teams from local businesses, schools, churches, and families for food, fun, music, and entertainment while team members take turns walking or running on a track. All money raised from the event will go to cancer research, education, advocacy, and service. Maria, 17, lives in West Chester and is a junior at West Chester East High School. She is the daughter of Lisa and Giovanni Colón. In 2016, Maria was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a blood cancer that starts in the lymphatic system and affects the immune system’s ability to fight infections. Maria underwent almost a year of chemotherapy and radiation treatments to her throat and chest. She had always enjoyed singing, but following the treatments she lost her voice. Maria did regain her voice, and, through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, she was able to achieve her dream of recording her own song and music video in a professional studio. To listen to Maria’s song “Recover,” readers may visit https://youtu.be/H5HaKcz_aVg. The theme this year is “Hope Across the Galaxy.” Teams are encouraged to register to join the May 18 event, which will begin with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. The event will continue through midnight and will be held on the track at Downingtown West High School. The event’s Survivor Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at 6 p.m., and the Luminaria Ceremony will begin at 9 p.m. For more information, readers may visit www.RelayForLife.org /paccc and www.facebook.com /RFLofCCC.

Investments For Coatesville Announced

SEPTA general manager Jeffrey D. Knueppel announced the planned return of regional rail service to the city of Coatesville.

R038745

The Chester County commissioners, joined by Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) general manager Jeff Knueppel, recently announced details of major investments that are designed to boost public transportation, economic development and community services in the city of Coatesville. At a briefing held at the location of Coatesville’s proposed new train station, Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone, and Terence Farrell noted the many city, county and state initiatives and efforts that have come together - and are expected to continue to come together to strengthen Coatesville’s neighborhoods and its downtown. Headlining the list of the commissioners’ announcements is Chester County’s agreement with SEPTA to bring back the regional rail service to the city of Coatesville that ceased operation in 1996. The proposed new service will extend SEPTA train operations beyond the current terminus in Thorndale to a new station in Coatesville. Service will See Coatesville pg 6

Highway intersection is just beginning through $1.7 million in Chester County Community Revitalization Program funds, and $750,000 was provided late last year by the county to purchase the new Chester County OIC offices and to make major renovations to the Coatesville Library. In March, a Coatesville Community Connections service was slated to set up shop in the Coatesville Library with a “community connector” who can help all individuals and families to find crucial services such as food, rental and utility assistance; housing; child care; jobs; transportation; health and dental programs; and CHIP information. The service is administered by the Maternal and Child Health Consortium and funded by the Chester County Department of Human Services.

Chester County Commissioners Terence Farrell (front, far left), Michelle Kichline (front, second from left), and Kathi Cozzone (second from right) presented a check for $1 million to Coatesville City Council and city staff to kickstart a train station parking garage. The presentation was made as SEPTA announced its plan to return regional rail service to the city. State Rep. Dan Williams (third from right) was among those present at the briefing.

One team of volunteers painted stairways in the women’s shelter facility at the Community Youth and Women’s Alliance (CYWA) in Coatesville, and another group of volunteers organized and labeled supplies that are kept for the shelter residents at Safe Harbor in West Chester. These locations were also served during last year’s Day of Hope. “Initially, we picked these sites because we have an affinity for Coatesville. Our synagogue was founded there 100 years ago,” Barnett said. “This year, we went back to those same groups, but wanted to do more and expand our area (of service).” The idea to form an IAC was conceived after Beth Israel organized and hosted the first Unity Shabbat in January 2017. Other local congregations, such as St. Matthew’s and St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran churches, had also been promoting interfaith education by hosting guest speakers from other faiths. They joined with Beth Israel, the Islamic Society of Chester County (ISCC) and St. Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church to plan a

breaking of the Ramadan fast in June 2017. More than 150 people of various faiths joined together for prayers, discussion and the shared meal hosted at St. Elizabeth’s. From fall 2017 to spring 2018, the IAC member congregations took turns hosting an evening of sharing information on their faith traditions. In its second year, the IAC has followed a similar format with the discussion focused on the sacred texts of each faith. As of April, the IAC has members representing Baha’i Faith, Beth Israel Congregation, Downingtown Friends Meeting, Hari Om Mandir, ISCC, Lionville YMCA (Diversity and Inclusion Global Committee), St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, St. Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church, St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Tibetan Buddhism and WellSprings Congregation. For more information, readers may visit the Facebook page of the Interfaith Action Community or visit www.bethisraelpa.org/ interfaithactioncommunity.

denominations, as well as Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and Unitarian Universalist groups and the local YMCA and other organizations. “We purposefully were looking for diversity, so people were placed in teams,” said event chair John Barnett from IAC. “We kept families together and couples together, but we tried to put Jewish people in with Muslims and Hindus and Christians. That was the whole reason for doing it.” The day began with a prayer service at Beth Israel Congregation at noon. “We had short prayers from each of the faith groups and began our workday,” said Barnett, a member of Beth Israel. Service projects were completed at several local nonprofit agencies. As part of beautification projects,

The first-place winner of the wing challenge will win a trophy and a smoker donated by a local business. “It is limited to 12 teams,” explained Lori Hornberger, who is a member of the Twin Valley Fire and Smoke committee, along with her husband, Tom, TVFD deputy chief, and Mike Wilson, Bo Gebhardt and Mike Tennent. “Everyone that buys wings gets a ticket, and the ticket allows you to vote on your favorite wing. Every team receives 30 pounds of wings donated by (a local restaurant). They bring their own sauce. The teams cook (over) gas, charcoal, wood pellet or open fire.”

teams will set up and start their cooking process on the morning of May 17. The professional teams are required to prepare and cook chicken, pork ribs, pork and beef brisket to be presented to the judges during the afternoon on May 18. Backyard teams are required only to cook chicken and pork ribs. Although the teams are not permitted to sell food to the public, they will be available to offer advice or answer any questions about the barbecuing process. The Professional and Backyard teams’ entries will be judged for appearance, taste and tenderness through a double-blind process, so that the judges will not know which team they are judging. Scores are calculated by category and then by overall ranking to determine the winners. Twin Valley Fire and Smoke Barbecue Competition is open to the public, and local vendors will be on hand. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. There will also be an opportunity to win gift baskets. Proceeds will benefit the TVFD, an all-volunteer organization that serves the residents of Caernarvon Township, New Morgan Borough and Elverson Borough, along with West Nantmeal, East Nantmeal and Warwick townships and surrounding areas. Exeter American Legion Post 934 will present the 38th annual Exeter Township Memorial Day Parade and Service on Monday, May 27. The parade, which will feature the Exeter High School marching band, as well as local Boy Scout troops, veterans groups and fire department vehicles, will leave Exeter Township Senior High School, 201 E. 37th St., Reading, at 9 a.m. The parade will end at Forest Hills Memorial Park, 390 W. Neversink Road, Reading, where a memorial service will take place from approximately 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Parade lineup will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the high school. Parade participants should enter from Route 422 on 37th Street. Volunteer fire police and American Legion Post members will distribute participation ribbons and help participants find their lineup locations. The parade will leave the high school at 9 a.m., follow East 37th Street, go right on Grant Street to 36th Street and cross Route 422 at the light at 36th Street. The parade will proceed on West 36th Street and go right onto Circle Avenue to Neversink Road. Scheduled to appear in the parade are the Exeter Township Police, American Legion baseball teams, the Exeter Antietam Lions Club, the Exeter Police Evidence Van and more. “The bulk of the parade is fire departments and ambulance associations,” said Jesse Ritz, Exeter Township Memorial Day Parade chairman. “We will have several Scout units that have appeared for all 37 years. The Skyline Drive Corvette Club will appear for the first time this year.” He said that many local residents look forward to the parade annually. People who are not residents of Exeter Township are welcome to attend the parade as well; parking will be available at the high school. “Nearly 2,000 people line up along the parade route. I would say it is the most popular parade in Berks County,” Ritz stated. The American Legion Post holds a memorial service following the parade to honor those who have died while serving their country. Lorraine Selke, Exeter High School marching band director, will lead the band in the performance of three selections during the memorial service. The keynote speaker will be Judge Timothy Rowley. NorthStar United Methodist Church pastor Wendy Orzolek will lead the benediction. In the event of rain, cancellation of the parade will be announced on radio station WEEU at 8:30 a.m. The memorial service in the cemetery will be held rain or shine.

R030550

By Francine Fulton

Local student musicians are invited to try out for a place in the Chester County Youth Orchestra (CCYO). CCYO will hold its spring new member auditions on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU), 455 Boot Road, Downingtown. The CCYO, which is sponsored by the CCIU, is open to youths ages 12 to 18. Openings are available in all sections, but there is a particular need for those who play the flute, percussion, cello, bass and all brass instruments. Students should be prepared to play major scales and a prepared solo, and they will be asked to do a sight reading. Auditions are by appointment only. For more information and to schedule an audition,

individuals may visit www.ccyo.org/auditions. The audition process will last approximately 10 minutes. “Students should bring their own instruments to the audition,” noted Mark Cellini, who directs the orchestra along with Katrina Kelly. “The only exception to this would be percussionists, who can contact us to discuss instrument needs for their auditions.” He noted that most members of the orchestra are part of their own school musical groups. “While CCYO does not require students to participate in their own school band or orchestra programs, we highly encourage their participation,” Cellini stated. “There is also no requirement for studying privately; however, an overwhelming majority of those students accepted into CCYO do so.” CCYO offers students an opportunity to enjoy playing in a symphony orchestra along with musicians from Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties. This year, the CCYO marked its 25th anniversary year with a concert on May 11. “Students in CCYO come from all over Chester County, as well as a few students from neighboring counties,” Cellini

said. “There are no geographic restrictions for participating in CCYO. Any student who wants to participate is welcome to audition.” He noted that participating students are asked to pay a yearly tuition fee. Cellini emphasized that even though the students come from different schools and backgrounds, they are able to form a cohesive musical unit. “This is one of the best parts of participating in CCYO,” he said. “Because students are coming together from different school music programs, they are all in the same boat of being out of their comfort zone. Students form close bonds with one another across school lines, and the musical experience is enhanced because of this.” He added that many students in CCYO also spend time together outside of CCYO activities. Members of the CCYO rehearse weekly on Wednesday evenings from September through May at Peirce Middle School, West Chester. “It can sometimes be a challenge to rehearse during the middle of the week, but we strive to make the rehearsal experience an enjoyable and educational experience for the students,” Cellini said. “ We are very

respectful of individual family schedules, and we strive to keep CCYO commitments with the exception of concerts, of course - to Wednesday evenings.” In addition to performing concerts, students take part in social activities. “ We try to schedule a few events during the year completely separate from music,” Cellini noted. “Some highlights include doing an escape room as well as an afternoon of bowling.” In addition, CCYO chooses a local nonprofit to benefit each year, and the students take part in a service project relating to that organization. “This year, CCYO is proud to benefit Safe Harbor of Chester County,” Cellini said. “CCYO students came together to cook a meal for the residents, and a few students visited the shelter and helped to serve the meal.” For more information about the CCYO, readers may visit www.ccyo.org or www.face book.com/ccyorch or email info@ccyo.org. 15-minute audition time slot with director Sarah Wingard at 540-383-9986 or carol andconcertchoir@lancastermennonite.org. The choirs are led by Wingard and artistic director Rosemary Blessing. Blessing holds degrees in piano performance and business administration from Eastern Mennonite University and has pursued graduate study in choral music. She maintains a private piano studio and teaches piano at Franklin & Marshall College. She is an active pianist in the Lancaster area and currently plays with the Allegro Orchestra. Wingard earned her bachelor’s degree in music education from Messiah College with a concentration in voice and extensive study in piano. Growing up in Virginia, she gained early musical experience singing with the nationally acclaimed Shenandoah Valley Children’s Choir. She teaches elementary music at the Locust Grove campus of Lancaster Mennonite School. Wingard also sings and regularly solos with the Susquehanna Chorale. MCCL is also accepting registrations for two nonauditioned programs that develop vocal skills: Prelude Music for children in kindergarten and grade one and Choristers for youths in grades two to eight. Classes are held Tuesday evenings from September through November and again from February through April. stage, said Mark. In addition to the trout release, students made trout bracelets on the outing with various colored beads to represent the stages of the project. For example, the red bead symbolized the red gravel in the aquarium, the clear bead represented clean water and the dark blue bead represented the watershed. Students and parent chaperones also took part in a nature scavenger hunt on the day of the release. TIC is an interdisciplinary program that introduces coldwater conservation education in Pennsylvania schools by raising brook trout, a native cold-water species, from eggs to fingerlings. The program exists statewide due to a partnership between the Pennsylvania Council of TU and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission with the support of the Pennsylvania Department of Education. TVEC received a grant from the Tulpehocken Branch of TU to make the program possible. “Not only was this Trout in the Classroom release engaging

favorite part of the project was, most students said that they enjoyed releasing the trout. “My favorite part was the release, because we spent so much time on them. We finally got to see them go, said Logan Loncaric. “I liked all of it, but I liked the release the most, agreed Tristin Pinard. “Seeing the fish swimming in the creek for the first time was super cool, said Mark Conlow. Students said the program, including the tank maintenance, made them feel like they were truly involved in the environment. “It was cool to do the ‘trout detention’ so we could clean out the tank, said Kaeley Werner. “It did (make me feel like part of the environment,) because when we did ‘trout detention’ we got to test the water and clean the tank, said Kaitlynn Hinckley. Students were also asked what TIC meant to them. “(It meant) learning about how trout develop and learning about the different stages of life for a trout. I like the fingerlings the most out of any

with the release of the fingerlings. The release marked the end of an extended project for the students, who have been raising the trout from eggs as part of the TIC program. Teacher Sue Sanger reported that the students received brook trout eggs last November. The eggs were then placed inside the school’s fish tank. She explained that the eggs were tiny and similar in appearance to pearls of tapioca. Throughout the year, the students monitored and recorded aquarium water quality and trout behavior, performing weekly maintenance on the tank. “Because I do not have time during the school day, I held ‘trout detention’ once a week after school, Sanger said. “During this time, we tested the water, cleaned out the tank and ensured that our trout were in the best conditions possible. She said that the TVEC students released about 62 fingerling trout, measuring between 2 and 3 inches long, into Hay Creek. Tips For Traveling With Pets Many pet parents choose to include their four-legged companions in their travel plans. Bringing pets along can reduce the hassle of finding a pet sitter or a boarding service. Traveling with pets in tow also can be enjoyable for the entire family, including pets. Perhaps that is why a recent study from AAA and Best Western International found that more than half of American pet owners take their cats and dogs with them when they travel. Traveling with pets can be fun, but it means taking some extra steps when planning a trip to ensure pets are safe and content. Before hitting the road or soaring into the sky, pet owners should consider the following tips: · Acclimate the pet to the car. Conduct a trial run with your pet in tow to gauge how it handles a car ride. Start with shorter trips and build up. Assess

how the pet reacts so you can make adjustments if necessary. · Get a wellness check. Visit the vet prior to departing, particularly if you will be traveling far or abroad. Pack an updated copy of health and immunization records, as well as proof of ownership of the pet. Some countries require pet passports. Investigate if the destination country requires quarantine of the animal. · Buy a quality pet carrier. Be sure to have a secure and comfortable pet carrier for your dog, cat, or small animal. This can make travel safer for the animal. If flying, you may need to purchase an airline-approved crate. Mark the crate with identification information and contact numbers. · Pack a pet-friendly kit. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) suggests bringing along food, a bowl, a leash, a waste

scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, medication and first aid, and any travel documents. Pack a favorite toy or pillow. Bring along bottled water as well. Drinking unfamiliar water can upset pets’ stomachs. · Book direct flights. A direct flight reduces the likelihood a pet will be kept on the tarmac or spend even longer times in the baggage hold of the plane. A petsonly airline might be a good choice as well. For example, Pet Airways offers climate-controlled cabins outfitted with individual crates, and a flight attendant checks on the animals every 15

minutes. After landing, pets are given a bathroom break. · Reserve pet-friendly lodging. Many hotel and motel chains now offer pet accommodations, and some provide pet-friendly rooms. There may be specific requirements, such as restricting the pet to a crate when unattended. · Make sure microchip data is current. Log into the service that coordinates with the pet’s microchip. Check to see that your address and phone number are current. Consider adding temporary travel contact data so the pet can be reunited with you if it gets lost at your destination.
