Berks ARL hosts Kitten Shower
BY FRANCINE FULTONAs part of an effort to encourage more families to foster rescued kittens until their permanent homes can be found, the Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Berks County recently hosted a Kitten Shower at Ridgewood Winery in Birdsboro.
According to José Joel DelgadoRivera, ARL’s chief communications officer, every year, thousands of kittens in all stages find their way into the shelter system with the need of families to care for them. In 2023, the shelter placed a total of 2,834 kittens with foster families.
“Many of the kittens we received at the ARL need around-the-clock care until they are ready to eat by themselves,” he said. “Our foster families are a very important part of the work we do at the ARL.”
Featured at the event were a number of fosters, who explained
how they care for the kittens staying at their homes. This includes regularly scheduled bottle feeding.
Debbie Martin is currently fostering three kittens that were found abandoned in a yard. “At this point, I feed them every four hours. When I started, it was every two hours,” said Martin, who has been an ARL foster for five years. “These are my 77th, 78th and 79th foster kittens.”
She said that the ARL keeps a list of fosters that are contacted when there is a need. “They send out an email with whatever kittens are available and their information - how old they are, if they have anything medical going on and how many there are in the litter,” she noted.
Martin pointed out that the animals will be spayed or neutered at 8 to 10 weeks of age and then be available for adoption, adding that
returning them is difficult but part of the foster’s commitment. “I’ve only kept two, and they were from the second litter, but the more you do it, the easier it gets to give them back knowing they are going
Honey Brook church to host open mic night
BY FRANCINE FULTONBoth singers and people who love to listen to music are invited to attend open mic night at Honey Brook Presbyterian Church. The event is held on the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and the next installment will take place on May 20.
The first session of the new program was held at the church on April 15. The first event included 20 attendees; seven of them were singers, many of whom perform at other open mic nights in the area.
Even though open mic is being held at a church, attendees do not have to perform Christian music. The only requirement is

In addition, she won the all-around competition. Katelynn is now the Level 9 senior national vault and all-around gymnastics champion. “I am over-the-top happy,” said Katelynn.
This is Katelynn’s first time competing at nationals. Last year, she was scheduled to participate,

CCACC to host annual car show in Morgantown
BY FRANCINE FULTONThe Chester County Antique Car Club (CCACC) will hold its 44th annual car show on Saturday, May 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Classic Auto Mall, 6180 Morgantown Road, Morgantown. The event, which is free to attend for spectators, will feature a display of antique and classic cars, street rods, trucks and motorcycles, as well as a flea market and food vendors. A DJ will provide music.
Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 200 participants, and all vehicle owners will be entered into a random drawing to win a cash prize. The drawing will take place at 3 p.m.
Previously, CCACC held its annual car show on Memorial Day at the Kimberton Fairgrounds. “This is our third year in Morgantown,” noted CCACC board of directors member Bruce Swayze, event organizer. “It was a dual show with the Valley Forge Mustang Club. We wanted to change dates and reconfigure some things, so we decided to go our own way. Morgantown loves car shows and greeted us with open arms.”
The show generally attracts
between 250 and 300 cars. “The idea is that the cars are 25 years or older because that’s what signifies an antique car,” said Swayze.
A registration fee will be charged to vehicle owners. “The Brass Era cars, which generally (were manufactured through) 1915, are admitted free of charge,” Swayze noted. Registration will be accepted until noon on the day of the show.
A portion of all the registration fees will be donated to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a New Yorkbased charity that formed after the 9/11 tragedy. “They helped the families of people who died in the World Trade Center in New York and (continue to help the families of) any first responders, police and firemen killed in the line of duty,” noted Swayze.
CCACC club member Jeanie Cassidy added that those who attend the car show will also be able to visit the auto mall, which is a 336,000-square-foot space that houses a wide variety of classic cars. “It’s nice there because you can go through the mall at no charge,” she said, noting that the mall will be open until noon on May 25.
The car show will also feature a flea market, which is not limited to auto-related merchandise. “Vendors set up and sell all kinds of things from old records to kitchen gadgets as well as antique car parts,” Swayze added.
According to www.ccacc.club, the CCACC was formed “to foster interest in the collection and preservation of motorized vehicles of all types and ages/years, as well as to perpetuate the lore and memories of early automobiling.”
Although it is termed an antique car club, members do not need to own an antique car or be a resident of Chester County to join the club. Rather, membership is open to anyone who has an interest in the

but an injury from a fall prevented that. “You had to make top seven at regionals to make the team (since) the top seven go to nationals,” explained Katelynn’s mother, Denetra Bauer. “This year, Katelynn ended up winning regional vault and all around-champion and placing second on beam, third on floor and seventh on bars in her division.”
At nationals, Katelynn represented Region 7 Level 9 Senior 6 gymnasts, serving as their captain because of winning the all-around award in her division.
Katelynn, who started gymnastics at age 7, is currently a member of Aerial Gymnastics in Phoenixville, where she is also a coach.
Through the years, she has grown to enjoy competing and is very appreciative of the audience.
“I am very aware of the crowd,” she said. “I love to hear people cheering for me and being there to
support Region 7 and gymnastics in general.”
Katelynn said that she plans to continue gymnastics in college after high school, where she also participates in girls’ varsity track.

Moore about the Civil War
BY ANN MEAD ASHNarvon resident and author
Joel Moore is a stickler for details. When presented with the design for the cover of his latest book, “Real Boys of the Civil War,” Moore noticed issues with the equipment the boys were carrying and with their uniforms. He worked with the designer, Gien Carlo Tan, to correct drums and uniforms until he was happy with the look. “It’s gorgeous,” noted Moore of the cover, which depicts more than a dozen boys in Civil War garb. Moore pointed out that more than 200,000 underaged young men took part in the Civil War. “Real Boys of the Civil War” is Moore’s first
work of nonfiction. The book begins with the historiography research paper Moore originally wrote as a student at West Chester University. The book also tells stories of the individual boys who served, and it finishes with photo selections of many of the young soldiers. One of the boys included in the book, Nathaniel McClean Gwynne, was still a civilian when he served, but his valor earned him a Medal of Honor. Moore explained that because Gwynne was too young to enlist, he went off to war as a camp helper. “At the battle of Petersburg, (Va.), the captain reminded the boy that he couldn’t go into battle,” said Moore. “(Gwynne responded), ‘That’s not why I’m here,’ and he
went in.” Gwynne rescued the flag when the color guard went down, but he lost an arm to cannon fire and suffered a leg wound as well. When Gwynne’s story made the newspapers, he was nominated for the Medal of Honor. That is when administrators in Washington, D.C., discovered the war hero was not enlisted. “They backdated his enlistment to when he first joined, and he got full pay,” noted Moore. Moore, who has been researching and writing about the boys of the war between the states for 20 years, was in communication with professor Jay Hoar, a University of Maine at Farmington retiree, until Hoar’s death in 2023. Moore has permission to use Hoar’s research, and Moore included Hoar’s story of Benjamin Franklin Williams of Georgia in the book. Williams was a member of the home guard - boys as young as 6 years old who served as lookouts, couriers, and supply movers, among other duties. “Williams became a wagoneer at age 7, and he served the entire four years of the war,” relayed Moore, adding, “At age 11, he was a veteran.”
Moore is known for his many works of historical fiction, including “Journey Into Darkness” and “West to Freedom.” “Real Boys of the Civil War was launched at Moores Memorial Library, Christiana, on April 27. Moore will be
featured at several upcoming events, including the Civil War Living History Encampment in Quarryville, from Friday, May 17, through Sunday, May 19, and the Memorial Day event in Maytown on Monday, May 27, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. In June, Moore will be at the Strawberry Festival in Bainbridge on Sunday, June 2, from noon to 4 p.m., and the Burning Bridge in Columbia on Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to noon. He will appear at the White Chimneys Estate in Gap on Saturday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 9:15 p.m., and in August, he will be featured at a 2 p.m. presentation at Hopewell Furnace in Elverson on Sunday, Aug. 11. Moore has more than four decades of experience as an educator and he recalled teaching the Civil War through the eyes of the boys who took part. More information about Moore and his books may be found at www.jarthur moore.com.

that songs contain appropriate language.
“Some played Christian music or original songs that they have written,” reported church member Lynn Klumpp, noting that a variety of music was featured during the first open mic. “We heard ‘The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald’ by Gordon Lightfoot and (songs by) Simon and Garfunkel and James Taylor.”
Those who would like to perform are asked to sign up at 6:30 p.m. “There is a sign-up sheet, and we go down the list,” Klumpp said. “They can play two or three songs, and if there is time at the end of the night, they can play (additional songs), or some can get together (and sing) as a group.”
A sound system with microphones is provided by the church, but singers should bring their own instruments, including guitars and keyboards. “We do have several microphones because sometimes two or three people play or someone might play and others can come up and sing along,” Klumpp noted. “That’s what is fun about open mic; you can play by yourself or with people.”
Light refreshments, including coffee, water and snacks, are provided. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
“People love to sing. If you sing in a bar (or restaurant), you feel obligated to buy something. (At the church), you don’t have to pay, or you can bring your own water,” explained Klumpp. “It’s more casual.”
Klumpp said that in order to publicize the first gathering, she distributed information about the church event at other local open mic venues, noting similar events are held at Lione’s Pizza & Restaurant in Downingtown and the Stottsville Inn in Coatesville.
The idea to host an open mic came from Gina Miller, a local country music artist, who received
help in organizing the event from church member Dave Mantz. “I am a performer and play a lot of open mics,” noted Mantz, citing the recent popularity of open mic events at bars and restaurants.
“There is quite a music scene in the local area. (Recently, these venues) started being receptive to people playing music. We are not professional entertainment, but it draws a crowd.”
He said that open mic night is an outreach of the church, meant to draw community members in to enjoy an evening of music. “We needed something to show the community that we are still here. We don’t want to evangelize or preach,” said Mantz. “Just come out and have fun with us. It’s a no-pressure deal. You can sit down, have a cup of coffee and have a nice evening. It’s a living room type of atmosphere.”
Honey Brook Presbyterian Church is located at 4331 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. Those who attend open mic night are asked to use the back entrance of the church. For more information, call the church at 610273-2848 or search for “Honey Brook Presbyterian Church” on Facebook.

Kitten Shower
to good homes,” she stated.
Lauren Reinhart has been fostering for five years and found her most recent foster kitten under a friend’s porch. “I have an incubator at home, and I do bottle feeding,” she said. “It was up to me (to help) and since I had all these supplies and skills.”
She also expressed that it can be difficult to give the kittens back to the ARL prior to adoption. “It’s tough and I cry almost every time, but grief has taught me a lot,” she said. “These are my 97th and 98 fosters, and (fostering) is absolutely a passion.”
According to information provided at the event, fosters must be at least 18 years old and have an ability to travel to and from the ARL, located at 58 Kennel Road, Birdsboro. While a specific foster room is not required, there should be space in a foster home that is separate from the other animals that live in the house. Supplies that are provided include food, litter and treats.

Also on hand at the Kitten Shower was the newly unveiled
mobile adoption and clinic unit. Housed inside the vehicle were adoptable cats, including Mogget, 13, a male domestic longhair cat. He is described as a “tranquil and amiable companion.” Upon request, Sierra Ortiz, ARL’s client services supervisor, let people inside the unit to view the cats. Attendees were also encouraged to donate food and supplies for the kittens. Needed items include Fancy Feast kitten food, Purina Kitten Chow, Tiki Cat Baby Thrive pouches, heating pads, soft blankets and soft pet playpens. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery to expand
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Indiantown Gap National Cemetery announced it is developing additional acres to meet the growing needs of veterans and their families in southcentral Pennsylvania. Upon completion of the construction project, it is projected that the veteran community will be provided additional burial space lasting into the year 2038.
Groundbreaking for the phase five expansion of the cemetery was scheduled to take place in March. The three-year-long project will consist of the development of 27 acres for approximately 15,700 gravesites for casketed and cremated remains. These sites will include 5,330 preplaced crypts; 598 traditional casket sites; 4,020 in-ground cremation sites; and a 6,000-niche columbarium. The $38.6 million expansion will also include construction of a new honor guard building.
The 677-acre Indiantown Gap National Cemetery was estab -
lished as a national cemetery in 1976 with the first burial taking place in 1982. Currently, the cemetery has 221 developed acres and is the final resting place of more than 65,000 veterans and family members.
Veterans Affairs’ National Cemetery Administration (NCA) - which provides veterans and their families with burial benefits and memorial services - led all organizations, public or private, in the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) for 2022. NCA received a score of 97, the highest score ever achieved by any organization rated by the ACSI. This was the seventh consecutive time NCA has ranked first overall in customer satisfaction.

Berks Book Bonanza has a new home
Berks Book Bonanza volunteers recently began moving into their new home at the County of Berks South Campus location in Mohnton. The move comes one month after the Berks County commissioners approved a lease agreement with the nonprofit entity.
Since its departure from the VF Outlet in West Reading following the 2017 book sale, Berks Book Bonanza has sought a more permanent space to call home, which was a challenging endeavor for the area’s largest annual used book sale. The group was able to secure temporary space at the Berkshire Mall for a few years but was once again left searching for space following its highly successful sale in 2021.
That was until the Berks County commissioners extended a helping hand in providing a space for the organization to collect donations and hold its annual sale.
Allen Westbrook, head of the Berks Book Bonanza Search Committee, has spent years with others in the search committee scouring commercial properties in Berks County for a suitable location large enough to serve as both a collection and sale site. The five-year lease agreement with Berks County provides organizers with peace of mind and the opportunity to begin providing funds to local nonprofits once again.
According to Westbrook, community members donate their
books for the sale, volunteers donate their time with all the sale preparations and volunteers from local businesses and organizations provide labor and expertise. One individual who lent his assistance to the community book sale was Jim Boscov, CEO of Boscov’s.
Following the final sale at the Berkshire Mall, Boscov and team members aided Berks Book Bonanza by supplying a truck and driver to relocate their displays and supplies to one of Boscov’s warehouse locations for storage. In addition to the donated transportation and labor, Boscov provided the storage location to the organization for minimal rent while meeting with event organizers to provide advice on their next steps forward.
When the move is complete, Berks Book Bonanza expects to begin accepting donations sometime in June with a smaller sale planned for fall. Individuals interested in making book donations to Berks Book Bonanza are encouraged to check for information at www .berksbookbonanza.org or follow the Friends of Berks County Public Libraries on Facebook.
Funds raised from the annual gently used book sale go to the Friends of Berks County Public Libraries and American Association of University Women, which supports the public libraries of Berks County and provides scholarships to women and girls.
