Benefit golf outing set in Honey Brook

Tohonor the memory of their son and to support those struggling with addiction, members of the Bilder family will hold a golf outing at Honeybrook Golf Club, 1422 Cambridge Road, on Monday, May 22. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Individual golfers and groups of four are welcome to participate.

Proceeds from the event will be used to renovate a barn at BridgeWay House, an addiction treatment center in Coatesville. Once completed, the building will be named Joey’s Barn in memory of Joey Bilder.

According to his mom, Jacqueline Bilder, Joey struggled with addiction for eight years before he died in 2022 at the age of 27. “He fought the fight and was doing well until he relapsed and died of a fentanyl overdose,” she said.

Despite their grief and loss, the

Scouts BSA offers activities for youths

Among the local Scouts BSA troops seeking new members is Troop 543G, which is open to girls in sixth grade through age 17. This summer, troop members will work on merit badges, attend summer camp and take part in a five-day horseback trek.

The group will hold its last official troop meeting of the year on Sunday, May 21, from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m. at Robeson Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3520 Plow Road, Mohnton. “We are wrapping up meetings for the year, but the girls’ activities will continue throughout the summer,” said troop leader Ginny Thorpe. “It’s a year-round program.”

family members want to help others by raising funds through the golf outing. “We are looking to have 96 golfers,” noted Jacqueline. “People are really struggling, and this is a really good recovery house and (Joey’s Barn) will serve a lot of people.”

Joey’s Barn will be a gathering place for residents of BridgeWay House, as well as a place to host support group meetings. “It’s an empty building, but it’s got good bones,” Jacqueline stated. “We have to do plumbing and electrical (work) and convert it into an indoor space so the residents can meet year-round. There is no place for (the residents) to all come together. They bus them to AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) meetings and NA (Narcotics Anonymous) meetings, which are critical to those in recovery. They could do meetings on-site or family therapy.”

Although Joey was unable to take advantage of the programs offered at BridgeWay House, the family was

impressed by its services and founder, Mark Harlan. “Mark has such a unique program. A lot of people come into a recovery house, and they have no money because they are homeless or coming out of jail or coming straight from rehab,” Jacqueline said.

She added the BridgeWay provides residents with transportation to and from work, doctor visits and court dates; supplies interviewappropriate clothing; and helps participants obtain a driver’s license.

The family believes that Joey’s Barn will be a way to keep his memory alive. “It will be his barn - his legacy,” Jacqueline said. “We had some tough years with Joey in and out of rehab and recovery. He got himself into a recovery house and an apartment, and we feel blessed because we had two really good years, and we repaired our relationship and talked openly and honestly about addiction. I truly believe he is in a better place.”

OIC holds appreciation dinner, seeks volunteer tutors

The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC)

Adult Tutoring Program, which provides free one-on-one tutoring for adults from other countries who are looking to improve their English language skills, hosted its Volunteer Tutor Appreciation Dinner on April 26 at the Chester County Library in Exton. Because of the pandemic, this is the first time the dinner was held in person since 2019.

In attendance at the event were the program’s volunteer tutors, students and OIC staff, including

Joyce Chester, OIC president and CEO. “We had about 40 people, including tutors and some students, in attendance. It was a lovely event,” said Robin Chiavetta, assistant program coordinator. “Several tutor and student pairs who have been working together long term spoke at the event.”

Chester County OIC provides free adult basic literacy education and life skills programs that are designed to prepare individuals for employment and economic self-sufficiency. Students come from countries such as Ukraine, Venezuela and Pakistan.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

The Adult Tutoring Program currently has a need for volunteers who are willing to work with an adult student seeking to learn English as a second language, study for the GED exam or improve basic literacy. A four-year college degree is required to tutor, but a teaching background is not needed.

“We have an ongoing need for volunteer tutors, as we have about 60 people on our waiting list,” said Chiavetta. “These are mostly ESL students with a few (students in need of) Adult Basic Education as well.”

Tutor training is offered online by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Tutors are asked to meet with

their student three hours per week, usually done in two 90minute sessions. Pairs can meet in person at the Chester County Library in Exton, where the OIC program is based; other libraries in the Chester County Library System; or other mutually convenient sites such as a coffee shop or the cafe section of a grocery store. They also may choose to meet virtually.

For more information about the program, including how to become a volunteer tutor, call the Adult Tutoring Program office at 610-3444013; contact Debbie Rikess, program coordinator, at drikess@cc-oic.org; or visit www.ccoic.org/adult-education /adult-tutoring.

Pathways announces new program

Pathways Hybrid-learning School in northern Lancaster County will launch a new program for the 2023-24 school year. The homeschool- or co-op-style, halfday program is intended to support parents as teachers and students in kindergarten through grade two (ages 5 to 8) as engaged learners. It is open to any family whether or not the family wishes to ultimately enroll its students with Pathways for grade three and above.

The program will begin on Monday, Aug. 28, with a parent and student orientation and will continue into May 2024 on Mondays from noon to 2:15 p.m. It will follow the general Pathways School academic calendar. The location will vary depending on the class needs of the day. It will be held at either the Senior High Campus at the Brubaker Homestead or at the St. John’s Center LowerLevel Campus, both near Terre Hill.

Early primary children will have opportunities to learn

Pathways School’s kindergarten through second-grade program will seek to help parents to teach their kids that learning is natural exploration.

alongside other children. The students will be gently introduced to group learning through activities in science, art, music, literature, and social studies that are led by a team of Pathways educators. While children participate in these activities, parents will explore and learn instructional strategies, content, and processes. Emphasis will be placed on working with their children in the initial home setting. These parental sessions will be led by the professional Pathways educators. Parents

will also gain experience working together with their children and applying approaches learned, all under the guidance of the Pathways staff. The program is designed to ease parents’ apprehension about becoming a teacher.

Enrollment is now open for parents and early primary students in the school’s service area of Lancaster and Berks counties. For more information and enrollment forms, visit www.learning atpathways.org.

Myers, Leighton earn certification

Friends Association for Care and Protection of Children recently recognized two of its team members for completing the course work to become a certified recovery specialist (CRS). Through the Peer Support Expansion Initiative held by the Council of Southeast Pennsylvania, Yulanda Myers and Jessica Leighton recently completed the yearlong course that certifies them as peer specialists.

Peer recovery specialists are people who have lived experience and have been through life experiences like the experiences of those they support. They have been successful in personal recovery and have firsthand knowledge of the healing process. While Myers and Leighton each had a unique recovery journey, they both utilized recovery community resources such as sponsors and peer support. Then they were inspired to give back to others who are going through similar substance use or mental health recovery journeys.

Becoming a CRS takes months of classroom learning and achieving at least 18 months of sobriety. Myers also completed an additional certification to become a certified family recovery specialist (CFRS). While a peer support

specialist does not substitute or replace treatment with a health care provider when it is needed, he or she can provide a unique layer of support. Both Leighton and Myers are working at Friends Associations’ NIA House, a safe home located in Coatesville. In addition to housing, the NIA House program provides supportive services that focus on key factors that impact successful reentry for women’s economic empowerment, long-term housing, healing from trauma, health and well-being, peer support,

County earns recognition

The American Heart Association’s (AHA) Workforce Well-Being Scorecard awarded Chester County government a platinum recognition for building a culture of health and well-being for its workforce. The county achieved platinum recognition - the highest award - by scoring in the top 9% of 381

The American Heart Association’s Workforce Well-Being Scorecard assesses an organization’s culture of health by looking at its mental health policies, health equity measures, organizational wellbeing strategies to address burnout, and employee financial resources, among other things.

The American Heart Association Workforce Well-being Scorecard, part of the association’s Wellbeing Works Better platform, helps business leaders unleash the power of a healthy, happy workforce. activities such as learning to build a fire or open-fire cooking. “They use the EDGE method, which is explain, demonstrate, guide and enable. The girls explain and guide the new girls through the process,” Thorpe shared. “What they are really learning is how to teach and lead other people through the guise of outdoor activities.”

Thorpe said that concepts taught to the Scoutmasters through their training are passed on to the Scouts. “Training can be applied to all aspects of life,” she explained. “(It covers) conflict resolution, setting goals, having a vision and interpersonal relationship skills. It leads to greater awareness and selfreflection. We ask (the Scouts) their goals. It helps them think about things beyond the moment.”

Thorpe highly recommends the program to all youths. “I think Scouts BSA is the most well-designed youth program in our nation,” she stated. “I would love to see more youth get involved.”

Flashfood and Giant reduce food waste

In honor of Stop Food Waste Day, Flashfood and the Giant Company recently announced a major milestone in their sustainability and food waste reduction efforts. Since May 2020, when it first partnered with Flashfood, a digital marketplace that connects consumers to heavily discounted food nearing its best-by date, the Giant Company has diverted 6 million

pounds of food from landfills.

As a direct result, the Giant Company and Flashfood have together saved more than 10 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere, which is the equivalent of taking 1,186 cars off the road for a year. The food saved also equates to more than two million meals that fed families instead of ending up in landfills.

The Flashfood program started as a four-store pilot in 2020 and has since been integrated across 190 locations across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

Flashfood shoppers use the app to save on meats, dairy products, seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables and other grocery items. Shoppers browse and purchase discounted food items directly through the

Veteran visits Military History Museum

Meet Ruby-Rose: available for adoption

Tuesday,

World War II veteran Richard DeVerter recently toured the Berks Military History Museum with state Rep. Mark M. Gillen of Berks County. While in the museum’s Holocaust room, the 97-year-old DeVerter recounted his grief at the sight of just-liberated inmates still in Germany’s Buchenwald con-

centration camp. DeVerter served in Gen. Patton’s Third Army as a crew member on a half-track in the 8th Armored Division. He now lives with his wife, Marie, in Lancaster.

Gillen is the chairman of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives’ Veteran Affairs committee.

Three-year-old Boston terrier Ruby-Rose is currently available for adoption from Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue. For more information or to complete an adoption application, visit www.luckydawganimalrescue.com.

2023 Campground Directory issued

The Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association (PCOA) released the 2023 edition of the “Pennsylvania Campground Directory” in January. This free, four-color glossy magazine lists 215 campgrounds and RV resorts in Pennsylvania. In addition to RV and tent sites, over half the Pennsylvania campgrounds also have cabin, cottage, or trailer rentals.

The annual PCOA Directory divides the state into eight geographic regions with maps, color-coding, and detailed facility listings for PCOA member campgrounds within each region. Each member of the association is listed, with the name, mailing address, phone numbers, website address, access directions, and number of sites, as well as a listing of facilities available. Eight detailed maps are included.

The directory can be found at campgrounds, RV dealerships, chambers of commerce, visitors’ bureaus, and Pennsylvania information centers. A large number are distributed at 35 RV shows across the northeastern United States. RV and camping enthusiasts can order the 68-page booklet directly by visiting www.pacamping.com or call the association office at 610-767-5026.

PCOA is an association of private campground owners dedicated to the advancement of family camping. The group is an affiliate of the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds, which represents 3,000 commercial parks throughout the United States.
