People in need of free food and toiletries or even a book to read are invited to visit the sharing box that was recently installed at the Birdsboro campus of Moving Communities to Christ (MCC) Church.
The box is currently filled with basic dry and canned goods, including cereal, peanut butter and jelly, canned vegetables
“The community really supports the community here in Birdsboro.”
and soup, as well as health and beauty aids and books for people of all ages. Once a refrigeration unit is installed, people will also have a choice of frozen food and farm-fresh chicken eggs.
“It is open 24/7, and you can come whenever you want,” said Lynnette Hess, MCC Birdsboro campus director, noting that the plywood shed was built by church members. “We all came together and loaded it up (with food and books).”
The structure has been dubbed the MCC Give and Take Community Resource Box because it contains items other than food and because community members
are also invited to donate food and books.
Additionally, if the box is not stocked or specific items are needed, visitors can write down what they need on a poster located inside the pantry door.
“There is a sign-up sheet so that if people need something specific like socks, diapers, milk or cotton
swabs, they can just let us know,” said Hess, adding that her phone number is provided on the sheet as well as that of Anna Kirleis, pantry coordinator.
Hess said that the idea to have a free sharing box was in response to Facebook posts, where local people often share their needs.
“Someone posted, ‘I just need
some groceries until Thursday,’ and people within the community started responding (with offers of food),” noted Hess. “The community really supports the community here in Birdsboro. We are a community of generosity.
It’s phenomenal. We wanted to be part of that and be part of that support.”

Not only did Jack Hafer win the title of Mr. Twin Valley during an event presented by the Twin Valley High School (TVHS) Mini-THON Club, but he also raised more than $4,000 for Four Diamonds, a charity that assists children who have cancer and their families.
As part of the competition, candidates were required to raise money for Four Diamonds, with every dollar donated counting as a point. Jack announced that if he reached his fundraising goal of $2,000, he would bike across the Twin Valley School District, which he did prior to the event, covering three counties, seven townships and 23 miles.
“The bike ride was a precursor to (the Mr. Twin Valley event). It was something I did for publicity and to fundraise,” Jack explained. “Once I hit $2,000, I said I would bike across the school district, which in my mind was a lofty goal.”
He gathered donations through his Instagram page, which was linked to the Four Diamonds donation page. “Family, friends and friends of friends (donated) and people shared it around in their Instagram friend groups,” Jack noted.

Katelynn Sherman, 16, a junior at Twin Valley High School (TVHS), recently had great success at a national gymnastics competition held in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where she earned numerous accolades.
At the event, the 2024 Women’s Development Program Level 9 Eastern Championships, gymnasts competed in four events: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise, where a 10 is the perfect score. Katelynn earned first place on vault, with a score of 9.7; third place on floor exercise, with a score of 9.6; fourth place on uneven bars, with a score of 9.3; and fourth place
The 20th annual Chester County 50plus Expo will return on Tuesday, June 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Church Farm School, 1001 E. Lincoln Highway, Exton. Hosted by OLP Events, the Expo will provide up-to-date information for the lifestyle and needs of local residents age 50 and up. Exhibitors will share details on travel, housing, medical services, leisure, home improvements, finances, health care, and more.
Guests will have free, in-person access to area businesses and service providers.
on balance beam, with a score of 9.475. In addition, she won the all-around competition.
Katelynn is now the Level 9 senior national vault and all-around gymnastics champion. “I am over-the-top happy,” said Katelynn.
This is Katelynn’s first time competing at nationals. Last year, she was scheduled to participate, but an injury from a fall prevented that. “You had to make top seven at regionals to make the team (since) the top seven go to nationals,” explained Katelynn’s mother, Denetra Bauer. “This year, Katelynn ended up winning regional vault and all around-champion and placing second on beam, third on floor and seventh on bars in her division.”
At nationals, Katelynn represented Region 7 Level 9 Senior 6 gymnasts, serving as their captain because of winning the all-around award in her division.
The 50plus Expo will also feature door prizes, seminars, and health screenings.
Onstage entertainment will include a discussion on relieving chronic arthritic joint pain by Active Integrated Medical Center, an introduction to Uwchlan Ambulance Corps’ new Mobile Integrated Health service, a virtual store tour and a presentation about easy meal solutions from Wegmans nutritionist Marda Heuman, and a musical performance by nationally-recognized Elvis Presley tribute artist Jeff Krick Jr. Admission and parking are free. CHESCO Connect will provide free shuttle service from the parking area to the Expo entrance. For more information, call 717-285-1350 or visit www.50plusExpoPA.com.

Katelynn, who started gymnastics at age 7, is currently a member of Aerial Gymnastics in Phoenixville, where she is also a coach.
Through the years, she has grown to enjoy competing and is very appreciative of the audience. “I am very aware of the crowd,” she said. “I love to hear people cheering for me and being there to support Region 7 and gymnastics in general.”
Katelynn said that she plans to continue gymnastics in college after high school, where she also participates in girls’ varsity track.
She said that while there are other local food sharing boxes, the MCC box will provide additional help to people in need. “We recognized a need of more than just the locations that are out now,” Hess noted. “We have (the food), and we want to share it.”
Future plans call for the box to be painted neon green, so it is highly visible.
Church members will also create a banner that will be attached to the side of the box so that people can see it from the road.
Hess added that providing food to the community is part of the church’s outreach. “Everything we do focuses around food. On June 1 we are having a pig roast from 4 to 6 p.m.,” she said, noting that Kona Ice will also be offered. “This is a free event for the community.”
The public is also welcome to attend Sunday services at MCC Birdsboro, which are held at 4:30 p.m. A fellowship meal is offered at the church on the first Sunday of the month.
The MCC campus is located at 144 S. Walnut St., Birdsboro. The food box can be found in the church’s back parking lot. For more information about church activities, visit www.face book.com/MCtoChrist or www.wearethatchurch.org.
During the bike ride, Jack posted live updates, which generated even more donations from individuals and local businesses. “I was posting on my Instagram story while I was doing it. I posted at each mile,” he noted. “It was being shared and lot of people were aware of it on Instagram, and I got three anonymous donations.”
He began the trek in Birdsboro at the Meraki Manor restaurant and ended his bike ride at the Honeybrook Golf Club. “It took me four and a half hours. I started on the Schuylkill River Trail that goes along Route 724, which is the edge of the district,” Jack explained. “I followed the trail and took roads all through the district. The golf course is one-half mile from the district line, but I thought it would be a good place to end.”
He said the effort was particularly challenging because he is not an avid bike rider. “I play soccer and football. That was the first time I got on my bike in years,” said Jack. “I knew that I wasn’t running or walking the (distance).
It wasn’t a race, so I didn’t have to go fast.”
He said that traveling through the district brought awareness about the Mini-THON Club, which raises funds for Four Diamonds. “I wanted to do something that would be on display in the whole district because Mr. Twin Valley is an all-encompassing thing, and you have to represent the whole district. I would do it again. What it did was great as a fundraiser,” he said, adding, “Bike seats are very uncomfortable. Props to bike racers.”
At the Mr. Twin Valley competition, Jack defeated more than a dozen other contestants. For the talent portion of the show, he rode a unicycle.
Jack, who is a senior at TVHS, will be a student this fall at the Villanova University School of Business.

The NRA Foundation has awarded the Chester County 4-H Archery Club an equipment grant exceeding $3,200. The funds will be used to purchase bows, targets, target stands, arrows and bow stands.
Michael Langer, a 4-H volunteer, noted that the program did not have much equipment when it began and had to borrow items from another county. Chester County 4-H has built up its archery program through the
support of community members, businesses, and others.
The Chester County 4-H Archery Club meets once a month at the Upper Oxford Community Park in Oxford, and by the Oxford Gun Club, located in southwestern Chester County. Youths learn about safety measures, equipment, and shooting techniques.

Scores of women attended the Chester County Single Mothers’ Conference on April 6, title sponsored for a 10th consecutive year by Benchmark Federal Credit Union. Organized by the Chester County Community Collaborative with the support of more than 50 volunteers, the conference was free to all single moms and included free child care and lunch at Oscar Lasko YMCA and Childcare Center in downtown West Chester.
During the event, organizers recognized Jasmine Jones with the Belinda Harrison Award, which honors a working single mom who has overcome adversity and is active in her community. The first runner-up was Diane Bonifacino, and the second runner-up was Alaysia Hawkins.
Jones was nominated by North Star of Chester
County. She grew up in West Chester and was educated in the West Chester Area School District. While attending Cheyney University, she gave birth to her first of two children and was able to complete her studies in political science. She experienced challenging periods when housing, income, and employment were less than ideal, but she always maintained full-time employment and worked through obstacles to become a role model of what hard work and self-sufficiency can achieve. Jones, a volunteer track coach, became a participant in the North Star of Chester County program, which coached her and helped her find scholarship funds.
After a 10-year hiatus to focus on her family, Jones completed her graduate studies at American University Washington College
of Law in December 2023. Her children are honors students and excel in sports.
At the conference, attendees had their choice of eight workshops covering legal insights, insurance, computer skills, and scam awareness, as well as a financial literacy workshop by Benchmark Federal Credit Union. Additional programming included a self-care lounge, a Community Connections resource fair, pampering, and workshops focused on physical and mental well-being.
Workshop presenters who volunteered their time include Rebecca Worthington, Benchmark Federal
Credit Union; Deborah Steeves, Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania; Chaniera Stewart, Uncommon Women; Sophia Zouras, Wings for Success; Sharon Dickinson and Rachelle Riley, past Belinda Harrison Award winners; Martina Martin, former insurance professional; Michelle Hang, RSVP; and Nikky Richardson, FreeNikk Healing Arts. More information on the Chester County Single Mothers’ Conference can be found by visiting https://singlemotherscc .org/ or searching on Facebook and Instagram for @SingleMothersCC and #SingleMothersCC.
