OIC Seeks Volunteer Tutors BY FRANCINE FULTON
The Adult Tutoring Program of Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking volunteer tutors to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills. “There is an increasing number of
men and women from all over the world who are choosing to make Chester County their home. They come in search of a better, often safer, life for themselves and their families,” said Robin Chiavetta, assistant program coordinator. “The need for volunteer tutors is great, as we have a long waiting list of students.” See Volunteer Tutors pg 3

otorcycles, live music, vendors and food will be featured at the 10th annual Bike Show being presented by the American Legion Riders of Morgantown on Saturday, June 4, from noon to 6 p.m. After being held at a different venue for the past several years, the Bike Show will return to Col. Jacob Morgan American Legion Post 537, 4499 N. Twin Valley Road, Morgantown. MCC

Admission is free to spectators. “People that don’t have bikes can come and enjoy the day as well,” said event organizer Melissa Seifert, treasurer for the American Legion Riders. “To enter your bike in the show, there is a registration fee.” Trophies will be awarded in various classes, such as stock, custom, trike, tour stock, tour custom, antique and side car. There will also be a People’s Choice award and a Commander’s category. “Another

motorcycle club, the Blue Comets of Schwenksville, who are familiar with bikes, will do the judging,” noted Seifert. The event will kick off with an opening ceremony. Amanda Faust will sing the national anthem and John Smyk will perform “God Bless the USA.” A highlight of the day will be live music by local bands, which will perform in the pavilion at the post. “We have four live bands lined up. Usually we only have three, but I was able to get a fourth this year,” noted Seifert. “The cool part is they donate their time. They are happy to help us out.” Performing at the event will be JAM, an acoustic duet; Chowderhead, an ’80s rock band; Drive Train, which will perform country music; and Cheap and Eze, a classic rock band. The day will also include a Chinese auction and an opportunity to win prizes, including gift baskets. Visitors will also be able to shop from a variety of vendors and purchase food. The post auxiliary will sell hot dogs.

Also on the auction block will be a “Hit the Beach” gift basket, which includes a beach towel, games, flip-flops and a sand cupholder, and a “Spring Is Here” basket with seeds, starter pots, a trowel, a garden flag with a pole and gardening gloves. Other featured items include a Wolfgang Puck toaster and a hockey puck autographed by James van Riemsdyk of the Philadelphia Flyers. A complete list of auction items and photos can be found by visiting www.face book.com/HoneyBrookLion sClubandchoosing “Events.” Elmer noted that the club began soliciting donations for the silent auction in February. Each year, the golf outing has included a silent auction to benefit suicide awareness/prevention programs. Proceeds from the golf outing will benefit the Lions Club, which supports many local organizations, including the Honey Brook Community Library and the Honey Brook Fire Company. The club also sponsors a Leo Club at Twin Valley middle and high schools, as well as Honey Brook Boy Scout Troop 9 and Cub Scout Pack 9, which meet at its community center. The club supports charities at the district level and the international level, and it collects eyeglasses as part of a Lions Club International program. In addition, the club presents an annual Halloween Parade, a Breakfast With Santa and an Easter egg hunt. bonus that came out of the pandemic,” Chiavetta said. “We have a lot of students who don’t have cars or can’t get rides. It’s nice for them to still have a tutor and not to worry about transportation.” Chester County OIC provides free adult basic literacy education and life skills programs that prepare individuals for employment and economic self-sufficiency. Students come from countries such as Brazil, Afghanistan, Egypt and Mexico. “Phil is working with Lucia. She is from Venezuela and wants to get a better job and become a U.S. citizen. Mary works with Alex, who was a
lawyer in Brazil and wants to learn English and continue his career. Katie is helping Kim, a stay-at-home mom who wants to learn English so she can feel more confident talking to other parents and teachers at her children’s school,” said Chiavetta. “Our students’ stories are all different, with one thing in common - their desire to learn English and thrive in their new community.” For more information about the program, including how to become a volunteer tutor, visit www.ccoic.org, call the Adult Tutoring Program office at 610-344-4013 or contact Debbie Rikess, program coordinator, at drikess@cc-oic.org.

Among the students currently being tutored by OIC volunteers are two women from Ukraine. “One has been in the country a little while, but her husband had to stay (in Ukraine). She and her children were able to escape. Fortunately, she has a sister here and they were able to come here,” Chiavetta said. “The other one has an adult son who is still there. He had to stay to fight. We found a tutor who is Ukrainian and wants to work with (the mother).” “As the situation there continues, we expect to see many more like them,” Chiavetta added.
