Rescue provides a safety net for lost animals
BY FRANCINE FULTONNot only is Safety Net Sanctuary home to senior and special needs farm animals, but it also is an animal rescue that provides a home for lost pets until their owners can be found. For pets that are unclaimed, Safety Net will give them a place to live until they are adopted.
The rescue, based in Fleetwood, is the animal control service responsible for handling 30 municipalities in Berks County, including Birdsboro and Caernarvon Township. When someone from those areas finds a stray domestic animal, they can call Safety Net to take custody of the animal.
“Right now, it is really busy,” said Lisa Poper, president, who
founded Safety Net in 2014. “It’s warmer and people have their dogs out, and they take off.” The rescue will also take in cats that are collared and microchipped.
When the pet parents are located, they must provide proof of ownership in order to reclaim their pet. If the owners cannot be found, animals will remain at Safety Net’s 12-acre farm until they are adopted.
“We are a no-kill shelter. We do the best we can to find homes (for the unclaimed animals). They stay with us as long as they need to,” Poper said, adding, “Stray dogs are difficult to adopt out because there is no history. You don’t know if they like kids or they bite. Our dogs sit a bit longer than a typical rescue.”
Current animals up for adoption
are Molly and Dennis, who were both unclaimed strays and have been at the sanctuary for nearly a year. Molly is a 4-year-old husky who is well-behaved and good with other dogs. Dennis is 3-year-old pitbull mix who enjoy walks and is good with other dogs, but not cats.
Rescued farm animals are also available for adoption. “We have horses, goats and potbellied pigs and (dogs, including) German shepherds, huskies, pitties and chihuahuas,” Poper noted.
Those who want to adopt an animal must complete an application and pay a fee. All adopted animals are spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated.
Safety Net is always in need of foster families that are willing to care for dogs in their homes until permanent adopters can be

Memorial Day observed in Elverson
BY FRANCINE FULTONWhile other Memorial Day events were canceled because of inclement weather, the Borough of Elverson was able to complete its commemorative service before the rain started on May 27. The first raindrops fell at the conclusion of the ceremony as taps was played.
Welcoming attendees to the annual event, which was held in the cemetery located across from Elverson United Methodist Church, was Mayor Esther Prosser.
“We are here to remember those who have served this country and, in some cases, giving their lives to defend the freedom for the United States of America,” she stated. Courtney Stoltzfus led the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” She also performed other patriotic songs, including “God Bless America” and “My Country ’Tis of Thee,” encouraging all in attendance to sing along.
The Rev. Scott Stevenson offered the opening prayer and a gun salute, and taps was provided by the color guard

and Jeremiah Wright on guitar.
The band plays at local restaurants and pubs and has performed at previous Joanna Furnace events. “We will play a mix of originals and traditional pieces - same as we’ve been doing at all the other Hay Creek events we’ve been at for the past eight years or so,” Wright stated. “We will definitely do lots of recognizable (songs) and lots of originals, too. We plan to play a nice mix for the 7th.”
“The band will perform on the stage right in the center of the grounds,” explained Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. “We will have seating, but people can bring folding chairs or blankets or pop-up tents.”
Food will also be available for purchase starting at 5 p.m. Visitors can eat on-site or take out their meals. The menu will include pulled pork sandwiches,
sausage sandwiches, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, soup, french fries, desserts and beverages, including water, lemonade, sodas and mint tea. Additionally, Stampede BBQ of Mohnton will have its homemade ale available for purchase.
Guided tours of the historic site’s building will be offered from 5 to 6 p.m., and each tour will last approximately one hour. Tour groups will gather and leave from the Joanna Furnace mule stable every 15 minutes. Attendees will be able to tour the office/ store building, charcoal barn and museum, casting house, blacksmith shop and wheelwright shop. Hay Creek historians will provide demonstrations and interpretations in each of the structures. Visitors may also take a self-guided tour of the site’s herb garden.
Also offered throughout the evening will be children’s activities and yard games and a book sale. Books will be available by donation only.
The next event at Historic Joanna Furnace will be a strawberry crumb pie sale on Thursday, June 20. The homemade pies will be made by HCVHA volunteers in the Joanna Furnace kitchen. Also offered for sale will be tapioca pudding, bread pudding and strawberry-rhubarb sauce. “The sauce can be used as a topping for ice cream or on waffles and pancakes or eating on its own,” noted Zerr.
To order, contact Zerr at 610286-0388 or mzerr@haycreek .org. Payment can be made at the time of pickup. The order deadline is Friday, June 14. At the pickup, additional food items will be for sale, including other homemade baked goods.

from Col. Jacob Morgan American Legion Post 537, Morgantown. Members of Elverson Boy Scout Troop 37 and Troop 543 from Plowville led a flag-folding ceremony. Alyssa McCaffrey, a member of Troop 543G, read the meaning of each of the 13 folds of the flag. “The flag-folding ceremony represents the same religious principles on which our country was originally founded,” she stated.
For example, the first fold of the flag is the symbol of life. The second fold is a symbol of people’s belief in the eternal life and the 12th fold, for Christians, represents eternity and glorifies God the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.
The Scouts then raised the flag on the pole located near the cemetery entrance to half-staff.
Ron Harner, a United States Marine veteran and commander of American Legion Post 537,
offered remarks, telling the story of several military members killed in the line of duty. “Each story is unique, and each story represents heartbreak to family and friends left (behind),” he stated, mentioning Lt. Col. Annie Ruth Graham, who served in the United States Army nurse corps. “She is one of

(the foster’s personal) pets are spayed and neutered,” said Poper. “We supply food and vet care. They are just caring for the dog and socializing him until we can get him into a home.”
The rescue is also in need of donations of pet food, animal care products, blankets and towels, as well as monetary donations.
Poper, who works full time as a nurse and is a licensed humane officer, said being able to rescue animals has been a lifelong goal.
“When I was little, we always had animals ... and I was always bringing strays home,” she stated. “(Safety Net Sanctuary) started small, and it started to grow and grow. We just want to get (the pets) to a good home.”

Harner also provided a brief history of Memorial Day, once known as Decoration Day. The national holiday is meant to remember all those who have died in service to the United States. “As proud
Americans, we should all remember that our freedom is not free. It is only possible because heroes, some from our own families or neighborhoods, have paid a high price,” he said. “It’s that price which enables us to have ceremonies and remembrances like this in towns across this great country.”
Senior Connections group to meet
The Senior Connections group will meet at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown, on Friday, June 7, at noon.
Following a homemade lunch, guest speaker Donna Joy Jones of Hatfield will share a presentation titled “The Joy of Butterflies.”
During the COVID lockdown and while experiencing the anxiety of those times, Jones donated one of her kidneys to a person in need after which she hosted a “butterfly release” to praise God for the gift of life.
Since then, Jones has enjoyed raising butterflies and writing “Expressions of Faith Stories.”
She serves as a full-time direct care worker supporting individuals with learning disabilities, emotional distress and behavior issues.
Senior Connections is open to all seniors age 55 and over. Meetings are generally held on the second Thursday of each month, but June’s meeting has been scheduled to accommodate the guest speaker.

Village Library welcomes new director
BY FRANCINE FULTONStarting a board game club, a Lego club, a youth chess club and a teen book club; offering yoga classes; and introducing the Tail Waggin’ Tutors program are just some of the plans that new director Carol Donahue has for the Village Library of Morgantown.
“We are hoping to revitalize, to bring people back to the library, bring kids in and young people and their families,” said Donahue, who started her new position on March 1. She replaces Maria Gerasklis-Long, who is now the director of the Wernersville Public Library.
“I am hoping by summer we have a number of those programs in place, but what we need is volunteers to help support those clubs, and we are always looking for board members,” said Donahue. “People can call in and talk to me to see if they are interested in helping.”
She noted that the library has already obtained board games for patrons to borrow. “We purchased a lot of board games not only for us to have a club, but also for families to check out,” said Donahue. “Families can come to the library not only for books or movies but to find things to do to help them spend
time together.”
A teacher by trade, Donahue graduated from the Valley Forge Christian College in Phoenixville, and she completed her student-teaching assignment at Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown.
“I went to school to be a teacher, and I taught for eight years at West-Mont Christian Academy before starting a family,” she noted.
Prior to being named director, Donahue had a long relationship with the library. “I started coming to the library about 18 years ago with my kids. Then, I joined the Friends group and also served on the board for six years,” she said. “In 2019, I started working as a library aide. COVID shut the library down, and then I was on staff, but not working.”
Since her children were homeschooled, Donahue used the library as a place to supplement their learning. “Pam (Mohl, children’s librarian) has known my kids since they were young and was extremely influential in my family’s life and our involvement here at the library,” Donahue stated. “My kids loved coming here and being part of it. It was providential that this (new appointment) came about.”
The Village Library is currently gearing up for this year’s Summer Reading Program, themed “Summer
Quest.” A kickoff celebration will take place on Monday, June 10, at 6 p.m. featuring Marian and Friends, who will present a ventriloquist program.
The Village Library is located at 207 N. Walnut St., Morgantown. To learn more about library activities, visit www.facebook.com/Village LibraryofMorgantown or www .villagelibrary.org. Those with questions or who want to learn about volunteer opportunities are asked to contact Donahue directly at 610-2861022 or smolibrary@gmail.com.
