Joanna Furnace site of benefit run/walk

St. Mary’s to host Strawberry Festival, mansion tours

Historic

Joanna Furnace is known for its historical programs such as the annual Hay Creek Fall Festival. Now, for the first time, Joanna Furnace will be the site of a running and walking event, which will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

The Paint the Town Purple 5K and 1K fun run, hosted by Morgantown resident Lynn Cronomiz, race codirector, will take place on Saturday, June 17. The 5K will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by the fun run at 10:10 a.m.

Cronomiz is committed to fighting Alzheimer’s disease in honor of her mother, Carol, who passed away from the illness in 2017. Last year, Cronomiz hosted a fundraising square dance at the Morgantown Holiday Inn. Cronomiz chose a square dance because both of her parents enjoyed the activity.

“We did the square dance last year, so this is something new we are trying. I always liked this location. I go to the Fall Festival. I thought it would be a neat place to have a run,” said Cronomiz, noting that she received permission to host the event from Mark Zerr, executive director of the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association, the nonprofit organization that maintains and preserves the historic site. “Mark is a runner himself, so he was on board with it.”

She said that 5K participants will run on various terrain and that most of the cross-country course is shaded. Those who take part in the fun run will follow a shorter course within the Joanna Furnace property.

“First (the runners) will start on gravel and run out of Joanna Furnace onto Furnace Road,” Cronomiz explained. “They will turn around near Weaver Road and come back to the furnace again.”

The runners will then follow a

path through the woods, which goes behind the furnace. “They will come out at the far end of Joanna Furnace and back onto gravel,” Cronomiz added.

Both the square dance and the upcoming running/walking event are part of the Longest Day initiative. Each year on the summer solstice, the day with the most light, thousands of advocates across the world participate in the Longest Day to “fight the darkness of Alzheimer’s” through an activity of their choice. The Longest Day coincides with Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month in June.

The race co-director is Cronomiz’s friend Pam Haas, who lost her husband to the disease. Cronomiz, who attended elementary and high schools with Haas, reconnected with Cronomiz through an Alzheimer’s

Association support group. Spectators are welcome to attend the upcoming event. A donation will be received for parking. “I would love it if the community would come out and watch (the race),” said Cronomiz, noting that her goal is to attract 200 participants. “It is a unique location for a run.”

Local businesses that are sponsoring the event will have tables set up that morning and distribute information about their products and services. Most have also donated prizes to the participants.

To register, visit www.pretzel citysports.com and search for “2023 Morgantown Paint the Town Purple 5K.” More information about the event is also available on Facebook by searching for “Paint the Town Purple in Morgantown.”

A Strawberry Festival and tours of the historic Potts mansion will take place on Saturday, June 17, from noon to 5 p.m. at St. Mary of Providence Center, 227 Isabella Road, Elverson. The event will include food, entertainment, children’s activities and craft vendors.

A highlight of the day will be strawberry dessert treats, including strawberry shortcake. Also offered will be ice cream, along with grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, snacks and beverages. The back of the site’s chapel will be used as the serving area, and there are picnic tables outside for eating.

Flea market to benefit Pawsitive Hearts Pet Therapy and Rescue

Pawsitive Hearts Pet Therapy and Rescue Inc. will host a fundraising flea market on Saturday, June 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Vet on Main, 330 W. Main St., Birdsboro. Shoppers will also be able to purchase grilled hamburgers and hot dogs beginning at 11 a.m., along with snacks, soft drinks and homemade baked goods.

Pawsitive Hearts will also have a table at the event, where items will be available by donation only. “We have a lot of dog accessories - leashes, collars and harnesses - and dog toys for sale and T-shirts that say Rescue Love,” said executive director Kathy Iglar.

In addition to the flea market, vendors will sell items such as handmade

soup, greeting cards, pet treat bags and embroidered items featuring dogs and cats. Some of the vendors will donate a portion of the proceeds from their sales to the rescue.

Iglar noted that while there will not be adoptable pets on hand at the flea market, visitors can learn about the pets currently looking for homes. Among the pets available are Dusty Rose, an adult cat, and Xena, a 1-year-old female German Shepard. “She’s sweet and loves playing with big dogs like her foster brothers, who are Great Pyrenees,” noted Iglar.

The pet rescue, founded in 2020, is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that focuses on rescuing pets in need of homes and providing animal-assisted therapy. Currently, See Flea market pg 2

the rescue’s cats and kittens are housed at PetSmart Adoption Center, 4210 N. Fifth Street Highway, Temple, and at Petco, 4607 Perkiomen Ave., Reading. “We need volunteers for both of those centers,” Iglar noted.

Volunteers are asked to spend a minimum of 30 minutes at the store. Volunteers clean the litter boxes, make sure the cats have fresh water and food and check that their habitats are clean and tidy. They also help socialize the cats and kittens by petting them and playing with them.

In addition to rescuing cats and kittens, Pawsitive Hearts provides animal-assisted therapy services. Recently, teams visited with employees at the R.M. Palmer Company in West Reading, which suffered a fire. “We reached out to them right after the incident. We (visited) on multiple days,” said Iglar. “They were really appreciative. We were outside, and the dogs had a great time.”

Iglar said the purpose of the flea market is not only to raise funds, but to bring awareness to the organization’s need for volunteers, including therapy dog teams. “These types of events are a good fundraiser, but at the same time, it’s more about trying to get the word out,” she stated. “We will have (handouts) that talk about

Family Fun Day set at Ryerss Farm

Family Fun Day, featuring games, pony rides, hayrides, food and more, will take place on Saturday, June 17, from noon to 4 p.m. at Ryerss Farm for Aged Equines. In addition, attendees will be able to see the retired and rescued horses that reside at the farm.

There will be a variety of children’s activities at the event, including a horse-themed bounce house. “We are having a mini carousel with eight horses,” noted Lynn Seeburger, a member of the Ryerss board of managers and the event chair. “We will also have two obstacle courses, which are inflatables, and inflatable skee ball. “

Games will include a duck pond, a carrot toss and a lollipop tree. Also offered will be tote painting and horseshoe decorating and puppet shows by puppeteer Robert Mouland.

Craft vendors will be on hand offering items such as photos, artwork, wreaths and quilts.

For children, there will be clowns, balloons and games.

Live musicians will be featured throughout the day. Among the performers will be the Roland Zimmerman Family, which performed at last year’s festival. Performances will take place on an outdoor stage by the food area.

Guided tours of the site’s mansion will begin at 11 a.m. Construction of the mansion was started in 1890 by Joseph Potts, whose family members were local ironmasters. Joseph’s great-great-grandfather was John Potts, the founder of Pottstown.

The home is actually a double mansion, with one side the exact mirror image of the other. One half of the structure was designed to be a home for Joseph and his wife, Mary. The other half was for Joseph’s son, William, and his wife, Mabel.

“The tour guides will be dressed as historic personages of the mansion. You will meet some of the maids of the mansion, as well as Mary and Mabel Potts,” said Sister Brenda McHugh, site director.

The mansion is known as Langoma, which is a Native American term that means “homestead.” The

mansion features 76 rooms, 22 fireplaces and numerous architectural highlights such as Tiffany stained glass windows, “floating” staircases and woodwork detailing.

According to a history of the site, William Potts died in 1943, and the property eventually went to the Daughters of St. Mary of Providence, who acquired the Potts mansion in 1948 to be used as a training and education center for children with developmental challenges. In 1984, the children were transferred to a new complex built by the Diocese of Philadelphia in Springfield. Today, the St. Mary of Providence Center functions as a retreat facility and provides housing for senior citizens.

“We are celebrating the 75th anniversary of our sisters’ arrival in Elverson,” Sister Brenda said, noting that the actual date of the anniversary is Nov. 4. “We are having a special Mass in October to celebrate.”

To reserve a mansion tour, visit www.stmaryprov.org/strawberry or search for “St. Mary of Providence Center” on Facebook. Funds raised from the Strawberry Festival and tour donations will support the maintenance of the site and the mission of St. Mary of Providence Center.
