Twin Valley High School celebrates graduation
BY FRANCINE FULTON“This moment has been the destination, the goal all of us have strived for, worked towards, dreamed of and could not wait for,” stated Emma McNamee, salutatorian of the Twin Valley High School (TVHS) Class of 2024, during the opening address at commencement ceremonies held on June 8 at the Santander Arena in Reading.
Emma is the daughter of Brian and Laurie McNamee of Honey Brook. The class valedictorian is Anjali Nair, the daughter of Pradeep Prabhakar and Lakshmi Unnikrishnan of Morgantown. After the welcome, Emma spoke about the accomplishments of the senior class, including plays and musical performances, club fundraisers and the performance
of the school sports teams, specifically the championship-winning girls’ field hockey and lacrosse teams. “Our achievements as a class can only be attributed to two things - our motivation and our fearlessness,” she remarked.
“We took the circumstances that faced us, worked hard to obtain our goals, putting in countless hours and having sleepless nights and every ounce of fight in us to reach for the stars.”
Next to speak was TVHS principal Bill Clements, who talked about the successes of the Class of 2024, including honors and awards at state and national competitions in FFA and the Technology Student Association. He also acknowledged TVHS student musicians, student artists and members of the theater arts club, as well as student-athletes who have
earned all-league, all-state and all-American honors and team championships in various sports, including football, cross-country, field hockey, softball, track and field and volleyball.
“(The student-athletes) have exemplified the highest ideals of leadership and sportsmanship,” Clements stated. “They have remained humble in victory and gracious in defeat and consistently represented Twin Valley with the dignity and class that our ‘Raider Pride’ motto demands.”
He added that the seniors planned spirit weeks, a powderpuff game, a junior-senior prom and homecoming. They collected items for food banks, provided holiday gifts for children and raised funds for local charities.
“In a remarkable campaign, the senior-led Mini-THON shattered their goal and their previous
“The Butterfly Lady” visits Senior Connections
BY FRANCINE FULTONThose who attended the recent Senior Connections meeting at Conestoga Mennonite Church may have been surprised to see a tent set up in the church’s fellowship hall. But they soon learned that once inside, they would be able to experience interacting with live butterflies that were brought to the meeting
by Donna-Joy Jones of Hatfield, who raises butterflies as a hobby. Known as the Butterfly Lady, Jones was a kidney donor during the pandemic, after which she hosted a butterfly release as way to honor God for the gift of life. The butterfly release was designed to bring joy to the community, which was experiencing the isolation of the COVID lockdown, and to

Summer Reading Program planned at the Village Library
BY FRANCINE FULTONYoungsters will be able to “visit” many areas of the United States this summer - all through the Village Library of Morgantown’s Summer Reading Program, themed “Summer Quest: Adventure Begins at Your Library.”
The official kickoff of the program took place on June 10, and it featured a performance by ventriloquist Marian and Friends.
During the interactive show,
youngsters enjoyed meeting various characters, including Forrest the duck. They also learned that their own two hands could be used as puppets. Children’s librarian Pam Mohl announced that the Summer Reading Program will feature story times on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. through Aug. 8. There will be no programs on Thursday, June 20, or on Wednesday and Thursday, July 3 and 4.

Since then, Jones has enjoyed raising butterflies as a hobby and sharing information about the creatures with local audiences, including church groups and senior citizens.
She began the program at the Senior Connections meeting by talking about the parts of the butterfly, including its wings and antennae, explaining that the differences between a moth and a butterfly are that moths are fuzzy and their antennae are different. “Butterflies have circles on the end of their antennae and there is no fuzz,” Jones stated. “(Although moths can be seen during the day), a moth usually comes out at night and is drawn to the light.”
She noted that there are 17,000 butterfly species in the world. “Most of them are in the rainforest and in Mexico and places far from here,” said Jones. “Some of it has to do with temperatures and their (life) cycles and (lack of) food between the milkweed and flowers not being there.”
Jones raises painted lady butterflies, which are similar to monarchs but have a much smaller wingspan and only live for two weeks. She purchases the butterflies online.
“I never keep any of the butterflies more than a week. If they are in bad condition, I keep them inside and when I think it’s time, I will take them out and put them in my butterfly bush to keep them away from the birds,” she shared. “Because they have such a short life span, the whole idea is to get them out there to multiply and keep the next cycle going.”
She emphasized that homeowners should plant flowers like butterfly bushes and milkweed that are rich with pollen. “If you are gardener, plant flowers that help the butterflies. Since they are pollinators and now endangered, it’s important that we do our part to help the butterflies because without butterflies and bees we don’t have any food,” she stated. “Their purpose is to pollinate and keep food on our tables.”
She then outlined the life stages of a butterfly, explaining that butterflies lay eggs on a host plant, like parsley, fennel, milkweed or dill. When the egg hatches, it becomes a caterpillar, which then lives on a host plant. After 10 days, the caterpillar leaves the host plant, attaches to a tree or building and spins a cocoon called a chrysalis from which it emerges a butterfly.
“They are totally transformed,” she said. “They emerge a different species altogether. Then they get to fly and to soar.”
She then discussed monarch butterflies, which, like birds, fly south for the winter. Monarchs migrate south to winter sites in Mexico, sometimes traveling more than 30 miles in a day. “The monarchs take part in an eight-month journey, so they live nine to 12
months,” she noted. “They (travel) from Canada and different parts of the U.S.”
The program concluded with attendees, many of whom brought their children and grandchildren to the meeting, being given an opportunity to interact with the painted lady butterflies. Jones put a sugar and water mixture meant to simulate nectar on cotton balls, which she handed to attendees as they entered the tent.
Jones also provided some instructions such as not touching the butterflies’ wings. “They will fly around the enclosure, and if I could ask you not to (swat) at them when they land on you,” she said. “When they do land, they just (give) a little tickle. Sometimes they will land on your nose; the record for that is 20 minutes. If you washed your hair with a fragrant shampoo or fruit-smelling one, they will land in your hair.”
“They are harmless, and
I think they enjoy interaction with us as much as we do with them,” she added. Senior Connections, open to all seniors age 55 and over, meets at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown, on the first Thursday of the month. Each session features a homemade meal held at noon, followed by a program.

Eagle Scout holds veterans appreciation dinner
BY FRANCINE FULTONOne of the requirements of earning an Eagle Scout Award is the completion of a community service project that showcases the Scout’s planning, organizing and leadership skills.
Because Karis Toothman of Birdsboro, a member of Troop 543G in Plowville, is the daughter of a Marine Corps veteran who was wounded in combat, for her project she chose to hold an appreciation dinner to honor local veterans.
Karis, the daughter of Drew and Misty Toothman, hosted the dinner in November 2023 at Hopewell Church in Elverson. “The church posted it on its website calendar, and I also shared it on Facebook with friends and family,”
Karis explained. “My family knows a lot of veterans, so there were also personal invites.” She noted that about 30 to 40 people attended the dinner, which included the veterans and their families.
During the event, guests enjoyed homemade lasagna. “I bought the food and made the food myself. We started the process at my house the night before by making the lasagna,” she explained. “Then we cooked them the day of (the dinner) at the church.” The dinner also included salad, rolls with butter and homemade brownies for dessert. Also assisting with the dinner were Karis’ parents; members of Troop 543G; Karis’ brothers, Carsen and Canaan, and other members of Troop 543B, which
is Troop 543G’s brother troop; along with Karis’ friends who are not part of Scouting.
Karis said she was pleased with the turnout. “I thought it was good number. It was in some ways nice not to have (a lot) of people. It was nice to get a chance to interact with the veterans,” she stated. “The Scouts that were there got to sit down and talk with the veterans, and there was a sense of community and fellowship at the event.”
“There were a couple of older veterans, including one Vietnam veteran,” she added. “It was open to all eras, so I didn’t collect information on when they served, but (I did record) what branch they were in. I believe there was at least one (veteran) from
every branch.”
Attendees were also invited to share their experiences and insights gained during their military service. “We had a time where they could share their stories essentially,” said Karis. “I had three signed up to (share), and after they spoke, we opened it up and we had two or three more (veterans) who shared.”
Each veteran was presented with a handmade thank you note made by the Scouts, and they were asked to stand up and be recognized.
Karis also arranged a display of information about local veterans’ groups. “We had different cards and pamphlets from organizations. There were also a few resources for the families of veterans - spouses and

He also recognized the TVHS internship program designed to prepare students for future careers and college dual-enrollment programs. “This class was offered over $5.4 million in grants and scholarships and awarded more than $127,000 in local scholarships thanks to our local community’s generosity,” he stated, adding that 56 TVHS graduates will join the workforce, 175 will pursue postsecondary education and 10 will join the nation’s armed forces.
He concluded by extending a challenge to the graduates: “Lead an ethical life, grounded in honesty and integrity,” he said, adding

a quote from Thomas Jefferson: “In matters of principle, stand like a rock.”
Other speakers included school district board president Gary McEwen, class speaker Elisa Brown, class treasurer Morgan Raines and secretary Jonathan LaBruto. Elisa and Morgan announced that the senior class gifts are a new water fountain and bottle-filling station in the high school stadium and a flower garden in the senior lounge.
The TVHS chorus, band, choir and orchestra offered musical performances. In addition to the previously mentioned class officers, Clark Gaynor was president of the senior class and Camrynn Owens was vice president.

Giant announces Healing the Planet grant program
The Giant Company in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful recently announced the return of its Healing the Planet grant program. This year, $100,000 will be awarded to tax-exempt organizations for tree plantings across Giant’s operating areas in Pennsylvania. Eligible projects must be shovel ready and include tree planting and direct costs relating to tree planting.
The 2024 Healing the Planet grant program will accept applications through Monday, July 1, at www.keeppabeautiful .org. Eligible expenses include trees native to Pennsylvania, equipment, tree signage, tools, and supplies. Preference will be given to applications that aim to plant the highest number of trees. Awardees will be announced in August.
This is the fourth year that the Giant Company has partnered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to offer Healing the Planet grants. In the past three years, more than $1.1 million has been awarded to 110 recipients for projects that connected people and families to green spaces, improved or helped to protect local
Village Library
Wednesday programs, open to children of all ages, will include a story, an activity and a craft. On Thursdays, the story, activity and craft will be geared toward preschoolers.
“Each week we will ‘visit’ a different state,” Mohl said, noting the sessions will teach children fun facts about the state. She noted that states from different regions of the country will be featured. For example, on Wednesday, June 19, students will learn about Vermont, and on Wednesday, June 26, South Carolina will be the topic.
She also announced the library’s upcoming special events, including a Pokémon Club, open to youths ages 10 to 18, on Monday, June 24, from 3 to 5 p.m. and Lego Club on Saturday, June 29, at 10 a.m., open to families.
The kickoff event also provided youths an opportunity to pick up their summer reading packet. Individuals who are not signed up can still register by picking up a reading log at the library’s circulation desk.
As part of the program, participants are asked to fill in a space on their reading log for every 20 minutes they read or, for younger students, have books read to them. “You can listen to books on tape, and that counts, too,” Mohl pointed out, noting that the goal is for each child to read for 1,000 minutes.
When they reach 250 minutes, children are
asked to bring their reading logs into the library. Children will receive a small prize and a token for the library’s prize vending machine, as well as a ticket for a larger prize. “We will keep your tickets, and at the end, there will be a drawing for a $50 gift card - one for kids and one for a teen,” noted Mohl, adding that children may also earn extra tickets for the drawing by attending library programs.
The Summer Reading Program is also open to adults. “For adults, there will be a book review sheet at the desk where they can write (the name of) the book they read, the author and give the book a star rating of 1 to 5,” added library director Carol Donahue. “They will also get a ticket for an end-ofsummer prize.”
Also featured at the library this summer are products for sale by local businesses, including pottery, jewelry, honey, talon soap, crocheted items and handmade dolls. “We are also getting in chocolates, soy and beeswax candles, oil painting prints, watercolor prints and stained glass,” Donahue added. These items can be purchased at the circulation desk.
The Village Library is located at 207 N. Walnut St., Morgantown. For more information about the Summer Reading Program, call 610-286-1022 or visit www.villagelibrary .org or www.facebook .com/VillageLibrary ofMorgantown.

children,” she said. “It helped that my dad is a veteran, so he could give me advice.”
Drew retired from the military in 2014 and has founded a nonprofit, Fundamentals of Bible (FOB) Truth, which provides assistance to veterans and active-duty military members along with first responders. He is also involved in the Twin Valley Mountain Biking Club. “The goal of FOB Truth is to provide support and community to veterans and others,” Karis said. More information about the group is available at http:// www.facebook.com/ FOBTruth.
Karis recently celebrated her Eagle Court of Honor ceremony at Hopewell Church along with friends, family members, veterans and Scouts from Troops 543G, 543B and 529 and Venturing Crew 22.
At the event, led by Scoutmaster Virginia Thorpe, Karis presented a slideshow about her achievements in Scouting, noting that she
joined Troop 543G in April 2021. She explained that the addition of segregated girls’ troops to Scouts BSA has allowed girls to earn the rank Eagle Scout, which is the highest rank attainable in Scouts BSA. Eagle Scouts are required to earn at least 21 merit badges, 14 of which are mandatory for the award. “I am the third girl in our troop to get Eagle Scout,” she noted.
Karis, 18, a 2023 Twin Valley High School graduate, is majoring in criminal justice at Liberty University in Virginia. Although she has “aged out” of Scouting, she plans to continue as an adult leader of the troop for the remainder of the year.
