Golf for a cause
Tournament to benefit Animal House Project
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Local golfers have an opportunity to play at an exclusive golf course and help a worthy cause by participating in the sixth annual charity golf tournament to benefit Animal House Project (AHP), a nonprofit organization that provides food and veterinary assistance to those in need so that pets are able to stay with the families who love them. The tournament will be held on Monday, July 22, at the Brookside Country Club, 850 N. Adams St., Pottstown.
The charity golf outing will open with registration and a continental breakfast at 8 a.m. Tee-off with a shotgun start will begin at 9 a.m.
The registration fee includes range balls, green fees, the use of a cart, a swag bag, a continental breakfast, lunch in the ballroom
and free beer on the course. There will also be prizes for the best golfers in various categories as well as a $25,000 cash prize for a hole-in-one.
MaryBeth Yannessa, AHP board president, noted last year’s event drew 125 golfers who enjoyed playing the private club, which is typically only open to members and their guests.
For more information and to register for the golf tournament, visit www.AHPCharityGolf Tournament.org. The reservation deadline is Wednesday, July 17. Sponsorships are also available.
Animal House Project began in June of 2001 as the 2 Moon Junction Animal House Project, a no-kill animal rescue group in East Fallowfield Township. After realizing that most of the animals were being surrendered because families could not afford to feed
or provide basic veterinary care for them, the Chester County Pet Food Pantry was formed in 2004 and later became known as Animal House Project.

Students invited to enter art contest
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Youths who reside in Chester County are invited to take part in a student art competition being presented by the Chester County’s Sheriff’s Office. As part of the contest, themed “Law Enforcement in the Community,” students in kindergarten through grade 12 are invited to create an original piece of art to show their appreciation for law enforcement. According to the rules of the first-time competition, students may use pencil, ink, markers,
colored pencils or paint to create their work. The three winners, which will be determined by a panel of judges from the department, will receive a certificate of recognition, a photo with Chester County sheriff Kevin D. Dykes and a tour of his office, as well as a gift basket filled with art supplies. The idea for the contest came from Noah Stribrny, who was named command staff liaison of the sheriff’s office in May. As part of the newly created position, Stribrny’s job includes public outreach.

“The addition will bring additional services to Animal House Project to include a pet vaccination clinic, low-cost spay and neuter services and access to pet food manufacturers,” Yannessa stated. “By joining forces, we can expand our reach and effectiveness in serving animals and families in need.”
One of AHP’s main programs is the pantry, which provides donated pet food, including dry and canned dog and cat food, as well as food for birds, fish, reptiles and other small animals. When available, pantry clients are also provided with treats, toys, cat litter, bed-
Pet food distributions take place on the first Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the pantry, 72 Robinson St., Pottstown, located off Route 100 near Motel 6.
“Diane’s has a vaccination clinic on the first Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” Yannessa added. For more details and to schedule an appointment, visit www.ddpets.com.
Yannessa also announced that pantry spokespuppy Yoshi, who has served in the role for 11 years, recently passed on the title to Watson, who was rescued by the SafeHaven Animal Rescue Team in Texas, which is another program that falls under the AHP umbrella.
“As the spokespuppy for Animal House Project, Yoshi has met thousands of people spreading the message of, ‘Help us help pets.’ He passed the torch to a new generation in May,” she said.
AHP is always in need of financial donations, pet food donations and volunteers willing to work at events and on distribution days. For more information, visit www .animalhouseproject.org or www.facebook.com/ AnimalHouseProject1, call 484-949-8329 or email info@animalhouse project.org.

Art contest from
“One of our priorities is to increase community engagement,” he said. “We thought (the contest) would be a good way to increase engagement with youth since school is out and (deputies from the sheriff’s department) can’t get into the schools to interact with the students during the summer.”
For the upcoming contest, Stribrny said that students can use their own creativity to come up with original ideas. “They can (portray) a sheriff deputy, a police officer or a detective, or they could (portray) a police officer helping someone cross the street,” he stated. “It’s entirely up to the students. We want to give them that option to be as creative as possible.”
“(I’m sure) we will get a lot of good drawings; there are a lot of talented students out there,” he added.
Stribrny said the contest is the first step in his goal to develop strong relationships between law enforcement and the community, particularly youths. “Once the school year is back up, we want to get in as many schools as possible, do workshops and interact with youths,” he stated. “It’s a great opportunity. As a former schoolteacher, it’s a personal thing for me to get deputies in the schools as much as possible.”
Other efforts include
holding “Cupcakes with Cops,” where officers would meet the public and be available to answer questions and provide information. The next scheduled event will be in August in West Chester with members of the West Chester Borough Police Department. “We are trying to show that law enforcement (personnel) can be personable,” Stribrny noted. “Sometimes the first interaction may not be positive if you get pulled over … but we are not always there to be the bad guy.”
For more information about the contest and to submit artwork, visit www.chesco.org/5569/ Student-Art-Competition or www.facebook.com/ ccsopa. Art can also be emailed to nstribrny@ chesco.org. The deadline for submission is Thursday, July 25.
“Pages for Pets” program announced
This summer, Berks County readers are challenged to help one lucky shelter pet find a forever home by reading books. Pages for Pets is a library initiative aimed at sponsoring the adoption fee of a shelter pet by encouraging readers to work towards a county-wide goal of 500,000 minutes read.
The event is being hosted by Reading District Libraries in collaboration with the Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Berks County and will run concurrent with the annual library Summer Reading Program. Local participating libraries include the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro and the Village Library of Morgantown. Readers from across Berks County will have until Friday, July 26, to successfully read a combined total of 500,000 minutes. Every minute counts towards the financial sponsorship of a pet’s adoption at the ARL. The ARL will announce
Motorcycle, car cruise-in to benefit local veterans
BY FRANCINE FULTON
The American Legion Riders Post 626 of Birdsboro will present a bike and car cruise-in on Sunday, July 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Michael’s Restaurant, 1211 Benjamin Franklin Highway, Douglassville. The show is free and open to the public and there are no registration fees required for vehicle owners.
Last year, the group’s car and motorcycle shows were held at Annamarie’s on Main in Birdsboro, but the event was moved to Michael’s because it offers additional parking spaces.
The first event this year was held at Michael’s on June 9, and it featured a display of motorcycles by members of the Riders group. “We had about 40 to 50 bikes and about two dozen cars,” reported Riders member Betty Kennedy, whose husband, Earl “Chip” Kennedy, is the chapter’s road captain. “This time we are focusing on (attracting) more cars to get a good variety.”
“This is not a show; it is a cruise-in, so there are no trophies,” she added.
“People can come and hang out.”
She said Michael’s is an ideal location for a cruise-in because it is centrally located at the intersection of routes 422 and 662, making it easily accessible. “We needed their parking lot. They are right off 422, and there is extra parking for visitors,” Betty noted. She added that the car shows were typically held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., but the time was changed primarily to the cooler morning hours for summer.
A DJ will provide oldies music during the cruise-in, and attendees will have an opportunity to win gift baskets. Craft vendors will be on hand offering items such as homemade baked goods, homemade dog treats and woodcrafts. There will also be a vendor selling smoothies and frozen coffee.
Donations collected at the event will be used by the Riders to fund projects

that help local veterans.
“It’s not one specific group we write a check to,” explained Betty, providing details of the club’s service projects. “We built a handicapped ramp for a veteran that could no longer walk. We took care of a gentleman who could not afford a transmission for his car, and we paid for it. We helped a man living in his car with his dog. We got his dog registered as an emotional support (animal) and provided funds for the first few months of rent to get him started.” The group has also helped veterans in need with clothing and food.
The American Legion Riders, led by director Doug Moore, are motorcycle enthusiasts who belong to the American Legion, the Legion Auxiliary or the Sons of the American Legion. Post 626 is located at 445 E. Main St., Birdsboro. The group’s motto is, “We ride in honor of those who have served, are still serving and those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.”
“We want the veterans to know we are here. They can reach out, and we can do what we can. That’s what we are here for,” Betty said. “(Veterans have) put their lives on the line for people they don’t know. We should be giving back to them.”
In the event of rain, the cruise-in will be held on Sunday, July 21. For more information about the cruise-in or the Legion Riders, visit www.face book.com/Riders626 or follow ALRchapter626 on Instagram. Those with questions or vendors interested in participating in the cruise-in should email alriders626@ gmail.com.

from Raven Ridge Wildlife Center in Washington Boro. “(She will bring) animals that have been brought into the rehab but are not able to be released back into the wild. That’s what qualifies them as ‘ambassadors,’” explained Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director. “She will bring Meret, a 2-and-ahalf-year-old broad-winged hawk. He was hit by a car and lost the use of one eye, which would make it difficult for him to hunt and survive in the wild.”
Young will also bring Barron, a black vulture; Phoenix, a peregrine falcon, which is a new ambassador; Monster, a striped skunk; Oberon, a black rat snake; and Ozzy and Harriet, box turtles.
“Insects” will be shared by instructor Alyssa Doster on July 17 from 1 to 2 p.m., and “Native Plants and Nature” will be presented by Lydia Martin on July 24 from 1 to 2 p.m.
“Archery” will be the program on July 24 from 6 to 7 p.m. Children will learn basic archery and safety skills from Bob Lauffer and then practice on targets that will be set up in the site’s back ballfield.
“Fishing the Creek” will be the program on July 31 from 1 to 2 p.m. Amanda Goldsmith from the Lancaster County Conservation District will demonstrate electrofishing in the creek. According to Ekdahl, electrofishing is the process of adding a mild electric shock to the water. It stuns the fish momentarily and they float so that scientists can identify the species of fish; the variety of fish that can be found in a waterway is an indicator of its water quality.
The program “Ornithology,” which is the scientific study of birds, will be presented on Aug. 7 from 1 to 2 p.m. by Sallie Gregory. She will discuss bird adaptations; their body parts, including beaks, wings and feet; their food sources; nests; and migration.
The series of programs will conclude on Aug. 14 from 1 to 2 p.m. with “What Lives in the Stream?” Biologist Brad Basehore will teach attendees about the creatures that live in the Conestoga River at Poole Forge.
Children who attend the nature programs must be accompanied by a parent
or guardian. In the event of a severe thunderstorm, the creek-related programs will be rescheduled. Ekdahl added that adults are also welcome to attend the nature programs that may interest them.
