Tel Hai Resident Named Volunteer Of The Year Shirley Walton, a resident of the Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook, was named the Volunteer of the Year by LeadingAge PA, a trade association representing more than 370 senior communities across Pennsylvania, as part of its 2022 Distinguished Service Award program. Walton, who has been a volunteer for more than 60 years, is the founder of the SEW Creative group at Tel Hai, is a past president of the Calico Cutters Quilt Guild and has led Tel Hai’s Nature Club.
The winners of the essay contest were Danica Leister (left), Abigail Smith (right) and Celia Kerr (not pictured).

Independence. Jeff Jones, site manager for Hopewell Furnace, provided the welcome, which was followed by “The Star-Spangled Banner” sung by Molly Herman and the presenting of colors by Girl Scouts from Daniel Boone Service Unit 763 and Boy Scouts from Pack and Troop 595. Danica Leister, a student at Daniel Boone High School, was named the third-place winner of the essay contest. In her narrative, Danica spoke about how the Declaration of Independence was related to the women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls in July of 1848. “During the women’s rights convention, Elizabeth Cady Stanton spoke her draft of the Declaration of Sentiments. This Declaration follows the text and composition of the Declaration of Independence but includes changes to the document to demonstrate the women’s effort toward equality and dedication to be taken seriously,” the essay stated.
Everyone knows that libraries are the go-to place to borrow books, but what about a loaner ice cream maker or a “happy birthday” yard sign? These and other items are now available as part of the Berks County Public Libraries’ new Library of Things program. Participating libraries, including Boone Area Library in Birdsboro and the Village Library of Morgantown, will maintain an inventory of items that people may borrow at their respective locations.

More Than Books Available To Borrow At Berks Libraries BY FRANCINE FULTON
SEW Creative, which Walton started in September of 2007, is a group of residents who get together weekly to sew items such as walker bags, respirator bags and blankets for Tel Hai Meadows Health Care Center residents. The group also makes table skirts for the Tel Hai chime choir, placemats for Meals on Wheels clients, pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer, baby bundles for newborns and quilts for local veterans and victims of domestic violence. Items made by the group also include sundresses, snappy bags (purses) and school supply bags for girls continuing their education in foreign places such as Belize, Africa and Haiti. Walton has also led the Nature Club at Tel Hai, which maintains the resident flower and vegetable gardens. Established in 2016, the Tel Hai Gardens were awarded the Garden of Distinction honor from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society for five years from 2016 to 2020. Last year, Tel Hai was awarded the 2021 Blue Ribbon of Distinction. The garden at Tel Hai is also an official Monarch Butterfly Waystation. See Volunteer Of The Year pg 3

The second-place winner was Abigail Smith, a student at Owen J. Roberts (OJR) High School. In her essay, Abigail said that while many people enjoy barbecues or fireworks on July 4, it is also a time to remember those who founded the U.S. “Next time, on the Fourth of July, take a moment and step back ... (and) reflect on the sacrifices of millions who allowed the United States of America to become the country it is today,” the essay stated. First-place essay contest winner Celia Kerr, a student at OJR, was unable to attend the ceremony on July 4, so her essay was read by Hopewell park ranger Kailey Loughran. Celia’s essay stated, “To most, the Declaration of Independence is a symbol of freedom, of liberty, of our country as a whole, but in its status as a symbol, I feel that many have neglected to remember what it is really

about. While I do appreciate its symbolism, it is the full body and content of the document that compels me to admire and remember it.” Each of the essay contest winners was presented with a framed certificate and a cash prize. To read the essays in their entirety, visit www.facebook.com/Hopewell FurnaceNHS and scroll down to the post dated June 21. After the essay readings, audience members volunteered to read the Declaration of Independence line by line using printouts of the document provided by Jones. The ceremony concluded with the singing of “America the Beautiful” by Amelia Shelgren. Hopewell Furnace, located at 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson, is currently open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the park is free. The Chester County Youth Center’s partnership with Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) and its Shelter Animals For Enrichment (SAFE) program has garnered national acclaim. The National Association of Counties (NACo) has recognized the county’s Youth Center and the BVSPCA with a 2022 Achievement Award, which honors innovative, effective county government programs that strengthen services for residents. The SAFE program was initially proposed by Chester County Youth Center caseworker Kristi Washington to help youths receiving services at the Youth Center by giving them a way to complete their community service hours and providing a positive enrichment experience. Youth Center director Deb Maccariella noted that the partnership also helps to ensure the dogs have been adequately socialized prior to their adoption. Hailey Marcus, from the Brandywine Valley SPCA added that the program helps to build positive relationships between youths and county staff members.

The idea is to provide free access to a variety of items that people may only need to use on occasion. “All libraries will have their own Library of Things collection,” explained Emily Orischak, community relations coordinator for Berks County Public Libraries, noting that libraries surveyed patrons about what items they would like to see available for borrowing. “They are developing their collection based on their own resources and own information.” However, she noted, everyone with an adult Berks County Public Libraries card can borrow any of the items in the collection countywide by traveling to the library that owns the items for pickup and return. “The library things will not travel through van delivery; you must travel to that library and return to the library that owns that item,” Orischak said. Details about the new Library of Things program
will be available at the library booth on Wednesday and Thursday, July 13 and 14, during the Berks County Fair, which will be held at the Berks County Fairgrounds, 1216 Hilltop Road, Leesport. “ We will have some information about what people may find in the Library of Things and information on how to borrow,” noted Orischak. Visitors to the library booth at the fair can also enter into a drawing to win one of three local experience baskets, which will feature gift cards to several local businesses. More information about the fair and a schedule of events cand be found at www.theberkscountyfair.com. To view the list of items available for borrowing from the Library of Things, patrons can visit www.berks libraries.org/library-of -things. The list can be filtered to include items in certain categories, such as arts and crafts, cookware, games and tools, as well as
what items are available at each library. Items in the collection include a stud finder wall scanner, a car dent puller, a digital film scanner, a portable cornhole set, a “Star Wars” baking pan and an automobile diagnostic code reader tool. Patrons are encouraged to contact their local libraries about what is in the collection and if they would like to donate items. For more information, contact the Village Library at 610-2861022 or smolibrary@gmail .com or the Boone Area Library at 610-582-5666 or boone@berks.lib.pa.us. The Library of Things program will conclude the library system’s yearlong 35th anniversary celebration. The celebratory anniversary year began in June 2021, when the library system first introduced EnChroma color blind glasses during an event held at the Village Library. The glasses are now part of the shared countywide collection.

Summer is synonymous with many things, including family vacations and relaxing days at the beach. For foodies, perhaps nothing evokes the spirit of summer more effectively than grilled foods. Grilling is a beloved tradition, but it is not necessarily the healthiest way to eat. However, there are ways to enjoy the flavor of grilling without compromising a nutritious diet. Burgers and hot dogs can be replaced with healthy proteins. The occasional hamburger or hot dog will not do much damage, but people who regularly grill should skip these summertime staples and replace them with healthy proteins. The American Heart Association (AHA) reports that fish and skinless chicken breasts are healthy alternatives to hamburgers

and hot dogs. Burger devotees can still enjoy their go-to grilled food, but they may replace ground beef with lean ground poultry, which contains less saturated fat than red meat. Most people have overindulged at a backyard barbecue at one point or another. The relaxed, party-like atmosphere of the backyard barbecue makes it easy to snack on chips and other unhealthy fare before moving on to the main course. Hosts can do guests a favor by replacing snacks and sides like chips and potato salad with healthier fare like celery, fruit salad or chickpea salad. Portions of grilled fare should be kept as close to a healthy size as possible. The AHA notes that a healthy portion of meat is around three ounces and no more than six ounces. Chester County Farm Guide Now Available

The Chester County Agricultural Council has issued its new “A Guide to Local Farm Products in Chester County.” The publication features the county’s diverse array of farms and locally grown farm products from strawberry fields to rows of peonies. The guide, highlighting over 125 familyowned farms and markets, includes a map and farm addresses to make the businesses easy to find, plus a chart that indicates what products are currently in season. This year’s Farmer of the Year, Darryl King of West Grove, is featured in the guide. He and his wife, Pam, grow corn, soy, wheat, and barley, primarily for animal feed. King has become a strong advocate for the preservation of farmland. The new guide also details the county’s farm diversity from the 32-acre, womanowned micro dairy Pigeon Creek Farm in Pottstown to

The health care experts at Piedmont note that excessive amounts of salt can contribute to inflammation from fluid retention and increase a person’s risk for hypertension or high blood pressure. to meat, chicken, and fish. Grilled vegetables, whether they are part of kebabs or simply grilled alongside the main course, add flavor and provide health benefits like those of veggies cooked in more traditional ways. The AHA notes that coating vegetables in a healthy oil like olive oil makes it easy to grill them directly over an open flame without sticking. Cooking in this way imparts that signature smoky, grilled flavor to vegetables. This summer, grilling can be as healthy as it is flavorful for those who employ a few simple strategies.

Mobile Phone Etiquette Tips Though it may seem hard to believe given their current status in most people’s lives, mobile phones were a relative rarity as recently as 20 years ago. But those days are a distant memory, as forecasts from Ericssson & The Radicati Group indicate that there are 6.64 billion smartphones in use as of 2022. Simply put, mobile phones are everywhere, even if proper mobile phone etiquette is not always so commonplace. Mobile phone etiquette is even more important given the increase in mobile phone usage. Brushing up on mobile phone etiquette for modern times can ensure users are not overstepping boundaries or making enemies when spending time on their smartphones. First, people should avoid round-the-clock texting. Text messages are how many people now keep in touch with family and friends. The popularity and convenience of texting is undeniable, but individuals should avoid texting
when in the company of other people. Doing so makes others uncomfortable and can adversely affect the quality of discourse between smartphone users and the people with whom they are engaging in in-person conversation. When in the company of others, individuals should resist the temptation to check and reply to text messages. Using speakerphone in public should be avoided. Whether it is at a grocery store, restaurant, park, or another public setting, hearing someone else carry on a conversation on speakerphone is a less-than-enjoyable experience. In fact, a survey from Expedia found that 53% of respondents felt making calls on speakerphone while in public was the most annoying mobile phone habit. Speakerphone should only be used in private and only among people who are involved in the call. Notifications should be turned off in public and when spending time with others.
Notifications have become a difficult-to-ignore component of smartphone usage. Researchers at Duke University found that the average person received between 65 and 80 notifications per day. Co-workers, family, and friends may grow upset by being interrupted by a notification. Notifications should be turned off when spending time with others and when visiting public places that tend to attract crowds, including movie theaters and restaurants. People should avoid watching videos or listening to music in public. Unless someone always has earbuds or headphones with them, they should resist the temptation to watch videos or play music on their phone when in public. Doing so disrupts people nearby and could lead to confrontations. Mobile phones are everywhere, which only underscores the importance of practicing proper mobile phone etiquette, particularly in public settings.

lamps, televisions, and computers may be fooled into thinking a home’s interior is warmer than it actually is. That will keep a temperature-controlled AC running longer and more frequently than is necessary. If necessary, move the thermostat to a part of the home where there are no electronics and appliances. The maintenance of the AC unit is important. Even the most energy-efficient AC unit will be forced to work harder, and consume extra energy, if it is not well-maintained. The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy notes that ENERGY STAR-certified HVAC equipment can yield annual energy savings of 10% to 30%. But such products must be maintained. Annual maintenance appointments with an HVAC technician can ensure the unit is clean and refrigerant levels are correct, helping it run as efficiently as possible. Closing curtains on especially warm days keeps the sun out and makes it easier to maintain comfortable temperatures inside without lowering the temperature on the thermostat. Avoiding the stove on hot nights and preparing cold meals or firing up the grill outside is another way to keep the house cool. Homeowners should address insulation issues.
