The program, according to event organizers, is designed to get families to explore Berks County in a safe manner while there are still some concerns about the pandemic. “Things are getting back to normal, but we are still in the transition stage,” said Amy Fulton, communications and marketing manager for the Berks History Center. “There is so much history in Berks County. It’s a vacation right in your backyard.”
Participants are encouraged to visit the website of each location prior to visiting to learn the hours of operation and site rules. While a majority of the locations are free, some may charge a nominal fee for entry.
In addition to those already mentioned, some other sites on the tour are the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University, the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles and the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum.
“We wanted to make the program manageable, but also give (participants) a list of options,” said Fulton, explaining why 13 sites were chosen for the tour. “People can pick and choose what they feel comfortable with and do it on their own time and at their own pace. (Everyone) can partake in this summer adventure that offers local residents a unique and fun opportunity to learn more about the 300-year story of Berks County and its people.”
Once participants have visited at least 10 out of the 13 locations, they are to return their map by Aug. 31 to MCL in exchange for a gift and entry into a drawing for gift cards and other prizes. The winners will be announced on Wednesday, Sept. 1.

Activities Planned At The Torch
The Torch Community Center, located in the Clock Tower Plaza, 2846 Main St., Morgantown, has announced upcoming programs for July and August. All programs are open to the public.
Worship and Prayer Tuesdays will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays from July 20 to Aug. 31. Pizza and Karaoke nights will be offered at 6 p.m. on Thursdays from July 15 to Aug. 26.
The following special speakers will be featured on Fridays in July and August from 7 to 9 p.m.: July 16, evangelist Tracey Weiss; July 23, pastor Howard Jarrett; July 30 and Aug. 20, pastors David and Yolanda Williams; Aug. 6, Nancy Miller; Aug. 13, Jerry Geeza; and Aug. 27, Lee Schappell.
Christian acoustic open mic nights hosted by the Roland Zimmerman Family will return on Sunday, Aug. 1. The Torch will be closed on Saturdays in July and August with the exception of special meetings.
Visitors to The Torch can enjoy fellowship and fun. The facility includes a pool table, a small kitchen area, a stage for performers, coffeehouse-style booths and sofas designed for conversation and a library featuring books for both adults and children.
Additionally, TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), a nonprofit weight loss support group, meets on Tuesdays from 8:45 to 10 a.m., at The Torch.

Those who are eligible can use the emergency rent and utility funding to pay for outstanding rent, electricity, gas, water and sewer and energy costs such as fuel oil or propane over a 15-month period.
To apply for funding, residents should call 211 and request rent and utility assistance. Five housing organizations - Friends Association, the Housing Authority of Chester County, Human Services Inc., Open Hearth Inc., and Oxford Neighborhood Services - will work with the applicants to process payments to landlords and utility providers.
