Local youths honored at Independence Day ceremony
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Yes, teenagers communicate by texting or posting on social media, but many local youths are talented and creative writers as evidenced by the recent submissions to the annual essay contest presented by Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site. As part of this year’s challenge, local middle and high school students were asked to address the question “What does the word liberty mean to you?”
Winners of the essay contest were invited to read their entries during an Independence Day celebration held at Hopewell on
July 4. The event also featured the singing of the national anthem by Molly Herman and the presentation of colors by local Boy and Girl Scout troops.
The high school winners were Aarush Shah, first place, Spring-Ford Area High School; Abigail Smith, second place, Owen J. Roberts High School; and Rachelle Toaldo, third place, Exeter Township Senior High School. The middle school winners were Samarth Mangal, first place, Renaissance Academy; Kartikeya Rawat, second place, Spring-Ford 7th Grade Center; and Hana Ismail, third place, Commonwealth Charter Academy.
All of the students, with the exception of Kartikeya, were on hand to read their essays. Kartikeya’s essay was read by park ranger Patti Shenk.
Jeff Jones, site manager, welcomed those in attendance, who gathered on the front lawn of the Ironmaster’s Mansion.
“With the volume of options one has to spend on July 4, we are pleased and honored that you chose to spend a portion of this special day with us here at Hopewell Furnace,” he stated. “It is always fitting and proper to gather on this day to remember the origins of our nation and the specific documents issued nearly

A construction project that will nearly double the building’s space is currently ongoing at the Honey Brook Community Library. Work began in April and is expected to be completed in November.
According to the architect’s sketches, the expanded library will have a U shape and the main entrance of the library will move from the front of the building on Route 10 to the current back of the library. The library’s parking lot will be expanded to 40 spaces.
The project will include the

Friends of Springton Manor Farm to host ice cream social
BY FRANCINE FULTON
National Ice Cream Day, which is celebrated every third Sunday in July, was established in 1984 by Ronald Reagan as a way to promote the important work of the dairy industry.
Locally, the Friends of Springton Manor Farm (SMF) will celebrate the day with an ice cream social on Sunday, July 21, from 2 to 5 p.m. Admission and ice cream are free, but donations
will be accepted. Proceeds will directly benefit the farm.
Friends members will serve the ice cream, including vanilla and chocolate, plus additional flavors, on the front porch of SMF’s farm complex area near the Great Barn. A sundae-making station will also be available.
“We will have jimmies, chocolate syrup, maraschino cherries and some crushed cookies,” said Robin Spurlino, Friends of SMF vice president, who serves

two and a half centuries ago.”
He also explained the rules of the essay contest.
“Over the past spring, we conducted our third annual writing challenge,” he stated. “We asked students in middle and high school from the 16 closest school districts to submit an essay based on a prompt related to the Declaration of Independence. The meaning of (liberty) can vary depending on the situation and the perception of the
individuals using that word.”
He noted that the essay contest has grown, adding that Abigail has participated in all three years of the contest and her essay was the first one ever submitted.
“We more than doubled the number of submissions this year with more than 70 entries,” Jones reported. “Reading and ranking these 70-plus essays were judges Jared Barndt of French Creek State Park, Joel
Moore from the Friends of Hopewell Furnace and Francine Fulton from the Community Courier.”
In their essays, both Aarush and Samarth said that liberty is more than just a word. “It is the beat of my heart, the music that guides my feet and the paste that connects me to the world around me,” Aarush wrote. “It’s like catching a peek of the rays of sun after a long night, filling my soul with warmth and hope.”
“(Liberty) is a feeling. It is the flame upheld by Lady Liberty’s torch,” Samarth’s essay stated.

Each of the essay contest winners was presented with a framed certificate and a cash prize provided by the Friends of Hopewell Furnace. To read all of the essays in their entirety, visit www .nps.gov/hofu/index.htm and scroll down to “2024 Independence Day Writing Challenge.”
The event also included a performance of the song “Here’s to the Brave” presented by Mekhi Bloodworth of Phoenixville Area High School, who submitted an original music piece rather than the traditional written essay.
After the essay readings, audience members volunteered to read the Declaration of Independence line by line using printouts of

Summer Reading Program underway at Honey Brook library
BY FRANCINE FULTON
There is still time for patrons of all ages to sign up for the Summer Reading Program at the Honey Brook Community Library, 687 Compass Road, Honey Brook. The program, themed “Adventure Begins at Your Library,” will conclude on Saturday, Aug. 10.
Participants are asked to pick up their Summer Reading Program packages at the library to register and then start reading. Those who bring in their reading log weekly will receive a ticket to be entered into a drawing to earn prizes. Those who bring in a nonperishable food item for the Honey Brook Food Pantry will earn one extra ticket.
School-age children are asked put a checkmark on their reading log for every 15 minutes that they read.
“You need to have a minimum of three check marks in a week to get a ticket,” explained library director Jennier Spade. On the reading log for preschoolers, they are asked to color in a square for every book they read or have read to them. “For each square they color, they get a ticket,” Spade said.
Young adults (YA) have to read three YA books or seven graphic novels each week to get their ticket.
Adults can earn a ticket when they read two books. “As of last week, we have 85 adults signed up,” Spade noted.
Each group - preschool,
school age, YA and adulthas three baskets they can win. Participants can put their tickets into the container in front of the basket they would like to win.
Prizes include an Echo Dot, an Amazon gift card and a McDonald’s gift card. Also as part of the program, activities will be offered throughout the summer.
Magic: The Gathering Club will meet on Saturdays, July 27 and Aug. 10, from 3 to 5 p.m. The program is open to people age 13 through adults. The library will offer starter sets, or attendees can bring their own cards.
A Percy Jackson Demigod Camp will be held on Tuesday, July 30, at 6 p.m. for students in grades three
to eight. Students will learn about Greek mythology and make crafts and snacks based on the “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” books. Registration in required.
STEM Spark will be offered on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 10:30 a.m. for children in grades one to five. Students will become paleontologists as they “dig” for prehistoric ocean life using authentic tools. They will then analyze their findings. The program is limited to 25 children, and registration is required.

speaking with an adoption counselor to ensure that the pet they select is a good match for their home, family and lifestyle.
Adopters are encouraged to bring their family members and other house dogs to meet the pet they are interested in before completing the adoption. alongside Friends president Brad Addison.
Other activities during the day will include a photo booth, face painting, cornhole and wagon rides through the park.
“The Chester County Parks + Recreation and Katie Cook (special events and program coordinator) have become big supporters of this event, and the county will be supplying music; fairy hair, where they put strands of color in your hair; and an appearance by Bubbletopia, a bubble-blowing company that does giant bubbles,” said Spurlino.
“The Friends will also have crafts.”
Live music will be provided by Paul Wilkinson, who will perform folk and bluegrass music. He was also the entertainment during Sheep and Wool Day at SMF.
Spurlino said that the ice cream social is popular, noting that about 500 people attended last year. Volunteering at the event are Friends members and staff members from SMF.
“The Friends contribute about 15 active volunteers,” noted Spurlino.
“We work with the parks staff and facilities department to bring this event to the public.”
While at SMF, which is a demonstration farm, visitors can tour the barn, which is home to more than 30 farm animals, including sheep, goats and chickens. The barn’s newest arrivals are rabbits. The Family Farm Museum, located within the Great Barn, contains seasonal tools and apparatus used on Chester County farms from the 1700s to the 1900s. SMF, a 306-acre park, also includes 7 miles of walking and horse riding trails, a Victorian flower garden, a butterfly garden, a pollinator meadow and picnic areas.
Families may also enjoy the site’s catch-and-release fishing pond. Fishing rods are available to borrow from the park office through the Rod & Tackle Loaner Program. The Friends of SMF is a
nonprofit group dedicated to the conservation and preservation of the farm. The group has about 40 members, all of whom pay a yearly fee. Members perform a variety of tasks at SMF, including helping to provide animal care, completing trail maintenance, weeding the gardens and doing historical archiving. In addition to the ice cream social, members volunteer during SMF’s annual Sheep and Wool Day, which is held on the last Saturday in April.

Another feature will be an adult reading room, which will also house a display of historical memorabilia. “I wanted a spot where the adults could go for a little quiet - to sit and read magazines and newspapers - and all our local history (items) will move there,” explained library director Jennifer Spade. “There will also be a small meeting room that can fit about six people.” She noted that the space could be used for homeschool group meetings and classes like English as a Second Language.
The books from the current children’s library will be relocated into the new children’s wing. The other books will be boxed and stored until the work is complete.
“The whole (existing library) needs to get painted, and we are getting new carpeting,” said Spade. “All of the lighting will be changed to LED to be more energy efficient.”
“Our new addition, which is the children’s wing, will
be ready for all the books,” she added. “What is left is the adult books and the DVDs. Those are ones that will have to be moved when we do the new rug and the painting.”
The Friends of the Library’s book nook will be relocated, and a room will be added for the sorting of donations. “Where the book nook is now will become our kitchenette for the community room,” said Spade, noting that a third restroom will be added.
She noted that a wall will be added to separate the restrooms and the community room from the rest of the library. “If we do programs out of hours, like Sewing with Ms. Nancy on Friday nights, these doors can be locked, and the people will only have access to the community room,” said Spade.
The building project began thanks to a $1.14 million grant that the library received through the Department of Community and Economic Development, which was garnered by state Sen. Katie Muth. “The grant just covers the building (construction),” Spade said.
The library will have a U shape that will house a new children’s wing and community meeting room.
“The capital campaign is ongoing to purchase furniture and shelves to be put into the building. For our community room, we will need a table and chairs. In our adult reading room, we will need comfortable chairs.”
As part of the capital campaign, the library recently introduced a wall-mounted donor recognition tree. The tree recognizes patrons who contribute a set donation. Various colored leaves that correspond to the level of contribution are currently available to purchase, as well as acorns and doves for larger donors. “There is a lot of space to write (on the leaves),” Spade noted. “People can write ‘in memory of’ or businesses can write their names.”
Donors on the tree so far include Honey Brook Township, Honey Brook Animal Hospital, Tel Hai Retirement Community, the Honey Brook Com -
munity Partnership, the Ladies Book Club at Knob Hill Farm, Brandywine Shoe Shop, the Honey Brook Women’s Club, the Honey Brook Library Mystery Book Club and Hoover Building Specialists. One leaf was inscribed with the words, “Reading saved my life.”
Once the construction project is completed, the tree will be displayed inside the lobby.
The Honey Brook Community Library is located at 687 Compass Road, Honey Brook. For more information about the project or to donate, contact Spade at 610-273-3303 or jspade@ ccls.org.
The library will remain open for most of the summer, although it will close for several weeks in late August and early September. Updates will be posted on the “Honey Brook Community Library” Facebook page.
