The Mill At Anselma Welcomes Visitors, Volunteers By Francine Fulton

“We need more people to know we are here,” said Will Caverly of Elverson, the new executive director of the Mill at Anselma, when describing the site’s need for visitors, as well as volunteers. The Mill at Anselma, located at 1730 Conestoga Road, Chester Springs, is a Colonial-era custom grist mill that served its local agricultural community for around 250 years. The site features a 16-foot steel water wheel, which is powered by Colonial-era wooden gears and was used to produce cornmeal and flour. The site, which was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 2005, is maintained by the Mill at Anselma Preservation and Educational Trust, a nonprofit organization that formed in 1998. The mill is open from April to

mid-December on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Demonstration Days are held on the second Saturday of the month. “That’s when we get the mill going,” Caverly explained. “We put some grain through the mill, the water wheel will start up and the gears will be turning.” The next scheduled Demonstration Day will be on Aug. 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Special technology tours will be available that day and will focus on how different parts of the mill work. Visitors will also be able to meet Dave Rollenhagen, the site’s miller, and hear him talk about how the gears work and what they do. There will also be handson, interactive activities for children, including the opportunity to sift flour. Visitors are offered guided tours on the weekends and on Demonstration Days. “We could always use more tour See The Mill At Anselma pg 5

Friends Group To Host Victorian Ice Cream Social The Friends of Springton Manor Farm (SMF) will host a Victorian Ice Cream Social at the SMF Manor House on Sunday, July 22, from 1 to 3 p.m. Featured will be fresh, locally made ice cream, as well as games, crafts and live music. Admission and ice cream are free, but donations will be accepted. This year, the Friends will serve ice cream from a Mexican ice cream shop in Kennett Square that offers unique ice cream flavors. “There will be vanilla and chocolate, with corn as the specialty flavor,” said Robin Spurlino, Friends of SMF president. “They offer Central See Ice Cream Social pg 8

Will Caverly (left), executive director, and miller Dave Rollenhagen invite the community to visit the Mill at Anselma, which is open for tours on Saturdays and Sundays. Additional volunteers are needed to serve as tour guides and in other capacities.

near Wallace Township Community Park, during a walk around his neighborhood. Little did he know at that time that he would one day be appointed as the church’s pastor. Welch officially became pastor on July 1 during a special installation service that took place prior to the Sunday worship service. Welch succeeds pastor Ralph Cain, who retired after spending 10 years serving at GUMC. Welch, who most recently was pastor at Friendship United Methodist Church (UMC) in Coatesville, introduced himself to the GUMC congregation by relating the story of his first encounter with the church. throughout the challenge period, the winning team was promised a donation, made in its name, to the Chester County Hero Fund. The Hero Fund provides financial assistance to the families of Chester County police officers, deputy sheriffs, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and state troopers who have lost their life or who are seriously injured in the line of duty. Through contributions made by local businesses, $3,300 was received by the Chester County Hero Fund in the name of Team Fire. WalkWorks ChesCo! is a program that aims to educate and empower county residents to adopt a healthier lifestyle one step at a time by creating more places for walking, supporting and promoting walking groups, coordinating walking challenges, and creating a website that allows everyone to track and tally their steps. It is the county’s response to the national Healthiest Cities and Counties Challenge, a twoyear competition that seeks to empower cities and counties across the nation to create a positive health impact. At the Chester County commissioners’ recent Sunshine Meeting, Health Department director Jeanne Casner announced the results of the WalkWorks ChesCo! First Responder Challenge - a competition that asked Chester County residents to support the county’s 5,000-plus emergency responders by joining a first responder team to compete and see who could walk the most steps in an eight-week period. During the challenge, members of the three first responder teams took more than 148.3 million steps. Team Fire, Team Law Enforcement, and Team Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were captained by Chester County Commissioners Terence Farrell, Michelle Kichline, and Kathi Cozzone, respectively, and aimed to sign up the most walkers and clock the most steps. Close to 400 county residents took part in the First Responder Challenge. Team Fire clocked the highest cumulative steps - more than 53 million. Team Law Enforcement registered the highest average individual steps at 8,180 per day. Team EMS member Yolanda Van de Krol had the highest average daily steps at more than 26,000 a day. Intro to Orienteering will be offered on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 10 a.m. at the Bingaman Nature Center, located in Antietam Lake Park, 2843 Hill Road, Reading. Orienteering is a navigational sport in which participants use just a map and compass to find their way around a course in unfamiliar terrain. Orienteering is often described as a thinking person’s game combined with a 5K. During the program on Aug. 4, Ed Scott of the Delaware Valley Orienteering Association will explain the sport, which is popular in Europe. After some instruction, participants will put their skills to the test on a beginner-level course around the park. The program is free for people of all ages. Attendees should wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Preregistration is required by Monday, July 23, by calling 610-374-2944. The program is being presented by the Berks County Parks and Recreation Department. “Fourteen years ago, my family and I moved right on the other side of Wagenseller Park. We (took a walk) and saw this beautiful church on my first night in Pennsylvania (and) I took pictures of it,” he recalled. He said that he spent his early years in business working for an escalator and elevator company. “All of the time, God kept calling me and I tried not to be a minister most of my life,” he said. “I ended up (attending) Hopewell (UMC) in Downingtown. I wanted to get more involved in the church, and I asked the pastor what I could do. He told me that he wanted me to do prison ministry.” That event prompted Welch’s work as a prison minister, which he has been doing for 11 years. “I go into the jail in Philadelphia preaching and sharing Communion,” he said. In time, Welch left his career and decided to enter into professional ministry, receiving his Master of Divinity at Palmer Theological Seminary. During the installation service at GUMC, Welch was presented various gifts from congregation members, including the following: a new Bible from Henry Foehl; a cross from Don Graewe; bread and a cup to signify Communion from Marta Wierick; “United Methodist Church Book of Discipline” from Joni Thor; water for baptism from Gene Huffman; a globe, signifying missions, from Shawn Trego; a hymnal from Barbara Carter; a white robe from Becky Pendlebury; and a clergy collar from Bill Pendlebury. Welch donned the robe and

collar following the presentation. Welch credited Cain for his smooth transition into his new role as pastor. “Every United Methodist Church will either reappoint their pastor or appoint a new pastor every year. It’s a one-year covenant,” Welch said. “I am thankful that (Pastor Ralph) lived about 3 miles from my old church (at Friendship UMC). I would see him … and we got to know each other. He was incredibly gracious (in the transition).” Welch said he will also be spending time getting to know congregation members, as well as members of the community by visiting the neighborhood. “I

walked around, visited the deli and walked in the park and (enjoyed) being able to say, ‘Hi, I’m the new guy,” he said. “I’m still learning.” Following the service, the congregation enjoyed cake, coffee and other refreshments during a reception to welcome the new pastor. GUMC, located at 1920 Creek Road, Glenmoore, holds its Sunday service at 10 a.m. Sunday school for adults and children is offered at 9 a.m. For more information, readers may call the church office at 610-942-2324, email glenmooreum@verizon.net or visit www.glenmooreumc.org. He noted that while most tour guides are local senior citizens, people age 18 and up are welcome. “You don’t have to have a background in history, but you have to have a sense of why it is important to preserve something. “We would be willing to take volunteers under age 18 for other jobs,” he added. “We have all kinds of things around here that we need help with, like cleaning up the grounds.” Volunteer tour guides get a one-on-one training session and

The mill changed ownership through the years, and its last owner through 1982, Oliver Collins, ran a grist mill, a saw mill, a cider press, a metal working shop, a barbershop and a lawnmower repair shop at the location, all powered by the same water wheel. The family also operated the Anselma Post Office. “The boards are in progression from the original Lightfoot family, who built the mill, all the way up to the Collins family,” said Rollenhagen. “If someone comes and there are no tour guides available, it is a pretty decent

Conservation Award Available A prestigious award that celebrates voluntary conservation by farmland owners is coming to Pennsylvania. This year, Pennsylvania will become the 14th state to present the Leopold Conservation Award in partnership with the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and Heinz Endowments. Sand County Foundation, a voice for private land conservation, presents the Leopold Conservation Award to farmers, ranchers, and foresters for extraordinary achievement in voluntary conservation on private working lands. The inaugural award will be presented at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January 2019. The recipient will receive $10,000 and a crystal award depicting Aldo Leopold. Given in honor of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, the award recognizes those who inspire others with their dedication to land, water, and wildlife habitat management on private, working land. The award brings together agriculture, government, environmental organizations, industry, and academia to advance the cause of private lands conservation. Pennsylvania Farm Bureau welcomes this opportunity to promote the inaugural Leopold Conservation Award in the state as another occasion to recognize and reward farmers, who are going above and beyond in adopting best management practices on their farms to protect the environment, while maintaining the future economic viability of their farming operations. Boosting The Immune System ongoing, the Harvard Medical School notes that the immune system is bolstered by various strategies associated with healthy living. Smoking is linked to a host of diseases and ailments, so it is no surprise that it also compromises the immune system. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) notes that cigarette smoke contains high levels of tar and other chemicals, which compromise the immune system’s ability to effectively combat infections. The effects of smoking on the immune system are both immediate and long-term. Smokers’ immune systems may not be able to fend off infections like the common cold as effectively as the immune systems of nonsmokers. And over time, as smokers keep smoking, their immune systems will continue to

A strong immune system can go a long way toward ensuring one’s overall health. But bolstering one’s immune system is no small task, as even medical researchers admit there is still much to learn about the links between lifestyle and immune function. The Harvard Medical School notes that a strongly functioning immune system requires balance and harmony. So it stands to reason that a highly unhealthy lifestyle will compromise the immune system, but it is also worth noting that pushing the body too hard in the other direction also can adversely affect immune function. Researchers continue to study the potential links between immune response and variables such as diet, exercise, age, and psychological stress. Though studies are

weaken, which the NCI says makes them more vulnerable to autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. There is no magical food or foods that can strengthen the immune system to a point where infection is impossible. However, the Cleveland Clinic notes that a balanced, healthy diet that includes a mix of vitamins and minerals plays a role in strengthening the immune system. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain a bevy of vitamins and antioxidants that help the immune system fight off potential infections. Many people bemoan the absence of fresh fruits and vegetables at their local grocery stores during certain times of the year. But the Cleveland Clinic notes that manufacturers typically package frozen fruits and vegetables at peak ripeness. That means frozen fruits and vegetables provide similar nutrition to fresh fruits and vegetables during those times of year when foods are not in season. Like a healthy diet, routine exercise provides a host of benefits, and one such benefit is its impact on the immune systems. The U.S. National Library of Medicine notes that the precise relationship be-

tween exercise and immune system function remains a mystery. Some researchers suspect that physical activity may flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways, reducing one’s risk of getting a cold, flu, or other illness. Another theory suggests that exercises causes changes in white blood cells, which the immune system uses to fight disease. These exercise-related changes may make it possible for the cells to detect illnesses earlier than they would if the body was not exercised regularly. While it is important to note that these are just theories, the Harvard Medical School suggests that it is reasonable to consider moderate regular exercise an important component of a healthy, immune-boosting lifestyle. Men and women interested in boosting their immune systems will no doubt find many products claiming to do just that. The Harvard Medical School urges consumers to be skeptical of such products, many of which make dubious claims that are not rooted in recognized scientific research. The immune system remains a mystery in many ways. But several healthy strategies may help people bolster their immune systems and potentially reduce their risk of infection.

Identity theft is a serious concern that affects millions of people. The 2017 Identity Fraud Study, released by Javelin Strategy and Research, found that 15.4 million consumers in the United States were affected by identity theft of some form in 2016. In those instances, $16 billion was stolen. Protecting one’s identity is not as complicated as it may seem, and it can safeguard consumers against fraud and theft. People should password protect all smartphones and other digital devices. Many are used to transmit sensitive information and may store passwords and other data that connects to financial institutions. People should never click on links in unsolicited emails. Such links may contain malware or computer viruses.

People should not provide Social Security numbers, birth dates, or other personal information to unsolicited callers, no matter how official they may sound. The same password or PIN should not be used on multiple sites. Passwords should vary, and a combination of numbers, symbols, and uppercase letters should be used to make it more difficult for thieves to decode. People should not keep all credit cards or important identification cards in a wallet at all times. Private records and statements should be shredded or destroyed. People should monitor their credit report. Consumers can receive a free credit report from the three major credit agencies free of charge each year. Any inconsistencies should be addressed and reported promptly.

While traveling, people should wash their hands frequently to protect against viruses and bacteria. When traveling by car, people should wear seat belts and take frequent breaks to help drivers stay alert behind the wheel and give everyone a chance to stretch their muscles. Vacationers should not forget about sun protection. Before going outside, they should protect their skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays. People should always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF, even when it is cloudy. Sunscreen should be applied 15 to 20 minutes before one leaves home. People should reapply sunscreen at least every two hours and after swimming. Wide-brimmed hats help to shade the neck and face, but they do not offer complete protection. People should use sunscreen on these sensitive skin areas. Travelers should also wear light-weight sun-protective clothing. Long sleeves and long pants will help protect skin. Travelers should wear sunglasses that block UV rays and also take advantage of shade whenever possible. They should keep in mind the sun’s UV rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Travelers should carry any important medical history with them, along with the name, address and phone number of an emergency contact. since the mid-1980s among adults ages 20 to 39. For the 39 years encompassed in the study, rectal cancer rates grew 3.2 percent annually for adults ages 20 to 39. Colon and rectal cancer have, historically, affected older men and women. But the most recent research shows an increase in the number of adults in their 20s and 30s who are being diagnosed with these cancers, particularly rectal cancer. Individuals already at an increased risk for colorectal cancer as a result of their lifestyle or family history may need to begin screenings at an earlier age. Individuals should talk to their health care provider about risk factors and what age they should begin screenings. People who are at high or increased risk for colorectal cancer can include those with a family or personal history of colon or rectal cancer or colorectal polyps; a family

every five years, and flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years. These screening recommendations are for every patient, and it does not matter which method they choose. However, if a test is positive, people should make sure to follow up with their health care provider, as they will then require a colonoscopy. A colonoscopy can detect potentially cancerous polyps and lesions before they develop into cancer or a more progressive form of cancer. If an individual notices any of the symptoms of colorectal cancer, regardless of their age or health status, they should call their health care provider. Symptoms include a change in bowel habits, like diarrhea or constipation; rectal bleeding; blood in the stool; abdominal pain or cramping; weakness and fatigue; and unintended weight loss. The ACS’ new guidelines also issue recommendations about colorectal cancer screening methods. While colonoscopy remains the gold standard for both the detection and treatment of colorectal cancer and precancerous polyps, other options are available. In its new guidelines, the ACS recommends choosing from six different types of screening tests. The American Cancer Society (ACS) released new recommendations for colorectal cancer screening guidelines, including the age screenings should begin for colorectal cancer. Previously, the screening age for a person at average risk was 50. The new guidelines have reduced that age to 45. By lowering the screening age, the goal is to detect colorectal cancer earlier in patients who are at an increased risk for the disease. Even with advances in detection and treatment, colorectal cancer is the number one abdominal malignancy that affects both men and women. Roughly 1 in 20 Americans will develop this cancer, and getting a colonoscopy can help in the detection and treatment of it. Last year, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that colon cancer rates increased from 1 percent to 2.4 percent annually
