Car show to highlight the Studebaker
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Local car enthusiasts will be excited to learn that the Keystone Region Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club (SDC) will hold its Atlantic Zone Meet on Wednesday through Saturday, July 24 to 27, at the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown. The event will include a swap meet, a display of Studebakers and a cruise-in open to cars and trucks of all makes and models. This is the first time that the event has been held locally.
Events will open on July 24 with the swap meet and vehicle display from noon to 8 p.m. Studebakers will be on display both outside and in the two convention rooms at the Holiday Inn Morgantown, which is connected to the auto mall. “We have over 50 cars registered for the outdoor show,” said SDC member Jim Sinclair. “The indoor show is for any independent brand - not Ford, Chevy or Chrysler. Independents are the old Studebakers, the
Kaisers and the Packards.”
July 24 will also feature a cruise-in and Food Truck Night. “We are doing an all-brand cruise night with food vendors from 3 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday night,” Sinclair noted. “Pop’s Grill (food truck) and Lickity Split from New Holland will

be here, and the Churchtown ladies auxiliary will bring their food trailer.”
The car show will continue on Thursday and Friday, July 25 and 26, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On July 26 there will be an outdoor Studebaker Show and Shine and visitors will be able to vote for People’s Choice awards. There will be a car cruise to Historic Poole Forge for the awards ceremony and barbecue from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
The event will conclude on July 27 from 8 a.m. to noon with a Cars and Coffee event, which is open to all makes and models of cars and trucks. Breakfast and coffee vendors will be featured. There will also be a display of American Motors vehicles.
According to a history of the Studebakers, members of the Studebaker family came to South Bend, Ind., from Germany in 1736. At first, the company built horse-drawn farm wagons. Studebaker entered the automotive business in 1902. In addition to the original South Bend vehicle plants, separate buildings were added through the years, including a plant in Detroit and one in Canada.
“Studebaker has deep roots in Lancaster County. The mother of the five Studebaker brothers, two of which started the wagon and automobile business, was Rebecca Mohler of the Mohler Church congregation (in Ephrata),” Sinclair noted.
Tel Hai resident celebrates 101st birthday
BY FRANCINE FULTON
“Is this all for me?” asked Howard “Pat” Clark as he walked into his 101st birthday party held on July 12 at Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook. Among those in attendance were Tel Hai staff members, Clark’s children and other family
members and state Rep. Dan Williams, who was there to present Clark with an honorary citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
Clark was born in 1923 in Flushing, N.Y. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University in Tennessee and was a pilot in the United States Army Air Corps.

Honey Brook Borough opens pickleball courts
Open house set for July 29
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Those who enjoy pickleball, which combines elements of tennis, badminton and pingpong, can now enjoy the sport locally on courts that recently opened in Honey Brook Borough Park, 73 Pequea Ave., Honey Brook.
An open house at the borough’s new pickleball courts will take place on Monday, July 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will feature refreshments, giveaways and
beginner lessons provided by Jackie Sweenie, owner of Next Level Indoor Sports in Downingtown. Paddles and balls will be provided.
The courts were created on the park’s former tennis courts. “We resurfaced the old tennis courts that were not being used,” explained Sandy Cooper, a member of Honey Brook Borough Council. “We painted white lines for four brand-new pickleball courts. They are unlocked and

After an unsuccessful attempt to merge with Packard in 1954, the South Bend plant stopped producing automobiles in December of 1963. The company decided to concentrate production in its small assembly plant in Canada. “The last Studebaker was built in 1966 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada,” Sinclair added.
He noted that the Studebaker is an international favorite with many collectors. “The club has over 10,000 members worldwide. Our

local chapter is basically central Pennsylvania, and we have roughly 225 members,” said Sinclair. “Our club meets monthly at different locations. We just held our national convention last month in Dubuque, Iowa.”
“We have been nicknamed the action chapter because we have more events and we are the drivers’ club, so we try to encourage (people to drive their Studebakers),” he added.
One of the Studebakers in Sinclair’s collection is a blue 1962 Champ. “I have been driving (Studebakers) since I was 16. I am a life member of the club,” he said. “The engine in my (1962) truck was in my first car when I was 16. My truck when it was new was shipped from Modesta, California, which is the hometown of George Lucas.”
The Classic Auto Mall and the Holiday Inn are located at 6180 Morgantown Road, Morgantown. A complete schedule of events is available at www.sdckeystone region.com. Additional information is also available at www.face book.com/SDCKeystoneRegionInc by choosing “Events.”

A construction project that will nearly double the building’s space is currently ongoing at the Honey Brook Community Library. Work began in April and is expected to be completed in November.
According to the architect’s sketches, the expanded library will have a U shape and the main entrance of the library will move from the front of the building on Route 10 to the current back of the library. The library’s parking lot will be expanded to 40 spaces.
The project will include the addition of a community room and a new children’s library. The existing library will house the books for adults.
Another feature will be an adult reading room, which will also house a display of historical memorabilia. “I wanted a spot where the adults could go for a little quiet - to sit and read magazines and newspapers - and
open to be used from dawn to dusk.”
She noted that pickleball is becoming increasingly popular throughout the country because it is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. “It’s similar to tennis, but the court is much smaller, and you stand close to ‘the kitchen’ area by the net,” she explained. “You’re not running as much, but it’s still a great workout.”
Cooper said that several groups are already playing regular games on the Honey Brook pickleball courts, including local families. “It’s great to see the court filled with young people,” she stated. “We are excited to have a (previously) unused area being used, and we want people to know about it.”
During the open house on July 29, attendees will also be given free tickets to win prizes through a random drawing. Prizes will include pickleball sets, which
include paddles, balls and a bag, and three copies of John Amrein’s book “FUNdamentals of Pickleball.”
“It is going to be a very simple event, not a festival or party, just an open house to encourage the borough residents to come out and see the courts and learn a little about the game,” Cooper said, noting that West Bradford Township also recently opened pickleball courts.
“We started talking to West Brad -
ford, who did an open house, and Jackie Sweenie went there and that gave us the idea. We hope to have other experienced players there that can help people with instructions on how to play.”
She added that those who would like to reserve a time to play on the courts should download the TeamReach app and use the code HBPickleball.
The borough also plans to utilize
the courts for events. “We want to start doing some beginner classes, and they will be listed on the TeamReach app,” Cooper said. “We also thought about Friday night family nights and doing organized play.”
The park is located directly behind the Honey Brook Post Office and Honey Brook Borough Hall on Route 10. For more information about the courts, call the borough office at 610-273-2020 or visit www.honeybrookborough.net and choose “Pickleball Courts are Open” under Borough News.

“My grandfather was an architect, and my father loved art as well,” said Clark’s daughter, Kim Esposito, who was accompanied to the event by her brothers, John and Clay Clark. “He started drawing and painting, and it is a hobby (that he continues).”
Clark said that he attributes his long life to “good genes.” “His mom and dad both lived until 95, and he worked and kept himself
Following the singing of “Happy Birthday,” Williams presented Clark with the citation, which read, in part, “We recognize individuals whose wisdom and experience have contributed to the enrichment of succeeding generations. (Clark) has demonstrated the highest ideals of citizenship and truly deserves special recognition. He has generously contributed to the well-being of others and (the Pennsylvania House of Representatives) offers the very best wishes to his future happiness.”
Williams also commented on Clark’s life, including his artwork. “As I look at this art, I recognize that he has been a gift to us. It’s not so much that we are honoring him; he is honoring us,” said Williams. “We are not just celebrating the years. We are celebrating and counting a life well done.”

all our local history (items) will move there,” explained library director Jennifer Spade. “There will also be a small meeting room that can fit about six people.” She noted that the space could be used for homeschool group meetings and classes like English as a Second Language.
The books from the current children’s library will be relocated into the new children’s wing. The other books will be boxed and stored until the work is complete.
“The whole (existing library) needs to get painted, and we are getting new carpeting,” said Spade. “All of the lighting will be changed to LED to be more energy efficient.”
“Our new addition, which is the children’s wing, will be ready for all the books,” she added. “What is left is the adult books and the DVDs. Those are ones that will have to be moved when we do the new rug and the painting.”
The Friends of the Library’s book nook will be relocated, and a room will be added for the sorting of donations. “Where the book nook is now will become our kitchenette for the community room,” said Spade, noting that a third restroom will be added.
She noted that a wall will be added to separate the restrooms and the community room from the rest of the library. “If we do programs out of hours, like Sewing with Ms. Nancy on Friday nights, these doors can be locked, and the people will only have access to the community room,” said Spade.
The building project began thanks to a $1.14 million grant that the library received through the Department of Community and Economic Development, which was garnered by state

Claire Werner, and Cadence Young.
To purchase tickets, call 717354-3355 on Mondays through Thursdays between noon and 5 p.m. or visit www.cavod.org. Tickets will also be available at the door.
The show is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are supplied by MTI.
Sen. Katie Muth. “The grant just covers the building (construction),” Spade said. “The capital campaign is ongoing to purchase furniture and shelves to be put into the building. For our community room, we will need a table and chairs. In our adult reading room, we will need comfortable chairs.”
As part of the capital campaign, the library recently introduced a wall-mounted donor recognition tree. The tree recognizes patrons who contribute a set donation. Various colored leaves that correspond to the level of contribution are currently available to purchase, as well as acorns and doves for larger donors. “There is a lot of space to write (on the leaves),” Spade noted.
“People can write ‘in memory of’ or businesses can write their names.”
Donors on the tree so far include Honey Brook Town-
ship, Honey Brook Animal Hospital, Tel Hai Retirement Community, the Honey Brook Community Partnership, the Ladies Book Club at Knob Hill Farm, Brandywine Shoe Shop, the Honey Brook Women’s Club, the Honey Brook Library Mystery Book Club and Hoover Building Specialists. One leaf was inscribed with the words, “Reading saved my life.”
Once the construction project is completed, the tree will be displayed inside the lobby.
The Honey Brook Community Library is located at 687 Compass Road, Honey
Brook. For more information about the project or to donate, contact Spade at 610-273-3303 or jspade@ ccls.org.
The library will remain open for most of the summer, although it will close for several weeks in late August and early September. Updates will be posted on the “Honey Brook Community Library” Facebook page.
