Twin Valley Ice Hockey Honors Former Player By Francine Fulton
During the recent Twin Valley Ice Hockey Club (TVIHC) alumni game, when past players took on the current varsity team, the club retired the No. 16 jersey of former Twin Valley player Tim Coffman. Coffman went on to play professional ice hockey for the ECHL, a minor professional hockey league formerly known as the East Coast Hockey League. The TVIHC, a nonprofit all-volunteer organization, is open to students from grades one to 12 who reside in the Twin Valley School District. Games and practices are held at ice hockey rinks in Reading and in Exton. “ We have a youth team, a middle school team, (junior varsity) and varsity, said TVIHC president Lori Jones. Jones noted that Coffman was one of the first players to be a part of the varsity
team in 2003. “Tim loved playing hockey with his friends, and one day while playing on a pond on Route 401 (in Elverson), he suggested forming a club, she recalled. “He was on other teams, but he wanted to play on a team locally because they all went to school together. The TVIHC officially formed in 2003 with the motto “Coolest Club in Town. Coffman was part of the first three varsity championships in the 2002-03, 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons. He mostly played defense, helping to set up his teammates with goals. “Tim was a cornerstone of those teams, said current varsity head coach Tim Meers. “His teammates enjoyed playing with him, and he was a joy to coach. After graduating from Twin Valley High School in 2006, Coffman played for the Philadelphia Little Flyers (2006-07) and the Laconia Leafs (2006-08) before heading to Utica College (2008-12). Chester County 4-H Program Names New Educator

Although he lives in Ithaca, N.Y., William LaRose will run the Philadelphia Marathon this fall in an effort to raise money for The RADAR Project, a Chester County-based nonprofit organization that supports victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence. LaRose, who recently completed active duty as an officer in the United States Army, has formed the Race for RADAR team, a group of men and women who hope to raise money to allow The RADAR Project to market an app that will allow victims to anonymously report crimes by dropping color-coded pins on a virtual map, marking the locations where the incidents occurred. Currently, incidents of abuse can be reported at www.theradarproject.org. See The RADAR Project pg 3
Logan Hall, who has been involved in 4-H since he was in elementary school, was recently named an extension educator by the Chester County 4-H Youth Development Program. Hall, who started his new job on July 9, grew up in Cumberland County, located near Harrisburg. “4-H has been a part of my life since age 9 or 10, said Hall. “I started in Cumberland County 4-H Goat Club and then joined the Cumberland Farm Stock Club. I grew up in town, but my aunt had eight acres outside of Carlisle, which is where my agriculture and livestock experience comes from. During his youth, Hall showed market goats, breeding goats, market hogs, breeding sheep, market sheep and poultry, among other livestock. “We also raised turkeys, he noted. 4-H Educator from pg 1 Hall continued in 4-H throughout his career at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown. “In the Pennsylvania 4-H youth program, you can (participate) from age 8 to 18. I continued into my freshman year of college,” he recalled. “Then, once I aged out, I started a collegiate chapter. It is very different from a traditional 4-H Club because we don’t carry a project; it was more service-based.” Prior to joining the Chester County staff, Hall was a 4-H youth development educator in the Penn State Extension of Cumberland County office and he served as the deputy communications director, as well as acting communications director,
during his tenure at the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. In his new role, Hall joins extension educator Toni Stuetz to provide educational programs and activities for youths throughout Chester County. “The opportunity to work with 4-H in Chester County aligns with my animal science background and it aligns closely with what I enjoy in the program,” he stated. “A lot of the program areas I will handle will be the livestock and equine programs. Just like Toni, I will put together camps for the public to come to and for 4-H members.” Hall recently toured the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook for the first time. The 4-H
The RADAR Project from pg 1 “Right now, it is web-based,” LaRose explained. “The big goal of this fundraising initiative is to get a mobile app so people can download it and use it on (their) phones.” To learn more about the app, readers may visit www.the radarproject.org/the-radar-app/. For LaRose, 26, this will be his third marathon. “I did the Philadelphia Marathon in 2013 and then I did a marathon in Korea, when I was in the Army,” he reported. “My goal for the Philadelphia Marathon (in 2013) was to make it under four hours. I made it by two minutes. I ran a 3:58.”
LaRose became familiar with The RADAR Project through a friend who knew the organization’s co-founder, Leslie Holt. LaRose explained that when he signed up for the marathon, a 26.2mile race, he had the option of raising funds for a charity, and he selected The RADAR Project. “When you sign up on the marathon website, you can link it to which charity you choose,” LaRose noted. Holt, who founded The RADAR Project with attorney Meri López in 2013, explained that the map on the website can identify a “hot spot” of illegal activities, such as a college campus. “Police will
Center includes an outdoor riding ring with a full course of jumps, as well as a pole building. The main building has a large conference area, with restrooms and showers. “It was my first opportunity to see the property,” he said. “It illustrates the dedication people have to the 4-H program in Chester County.” The public is invited to meet Hall and other staff members from the extension office in Chester County during an open house at the Chester County 4-H Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. The fair will be held at the Romano 4-H Center, 1841 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. The fair will be open to the public from Monday, Aug. 6, through Thursday, Aug. 9, from and are using it,” Holt said. “We’re hoping the more populated the map gets the clearer the picture will be. Even though it’s anonymous, it gives (law enforcement) a barometer of what is going on.” She said the website aims to empower victims by giving them a place to share their stories. “Every person should have a voice,” said Holt. “When people share their stories, that’s how other people learn. (The phrase) ‘You are not alone’ may be overused, but it is the truth. To see it in all those little pins - you can start feeling you are not completely isolated.” Future plans for the organization include developing a registry of volunteers to help victims. “Say a victim has to show up for court and doesn’t want their family involved. 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; on Friday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guided tours and handson activities for children will be offered on Tuesday, Aug. 7, beginning at 10 a.m. The fair is open to the public. Parking and admission are free. For a complete schedule or more information about the Chester
County 4-H Fair, readers may visit www.extension.psu.edu /programs/4-h/counties /chester/4-h-fair-chester-county. Hall, who is finalizing plans for the fair with other staff members, said that so far it has been an easy transition from Cumberland County 4-H to Chester County 4-H. “Part of my degree was to be a student-teacher, so I

was a student-teacher for four to five months,” he said. “I taught all the ag classes at Octorara High School, so in a way I’m coming back to Chester County.” For more information about Penn State Extension and its 4-H program in Chester County, readers may visit www.extension.psu.edu/chester or contact the office at 610-696-3500.

National Korean War Veterans Day will take place on Friday, July 27. The event will take place on the anniversary of the July 27, 1953, armistice signed by North Korea, China, the United States and the United Nations, suspending all hostilities. In honor of the Americans who served during that time, and especially those who died, the President has proclaimed July 27 as National Korean War Veterans Day. He encouraged Americans to observe the day with ceremonies and activities honoring all Korean War veterans.

Bulgrien pointed out that the camp setting, which has drawn students from three counties, is different from other Cavod productions. “We are together 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day, said Bulgrien, who added that when the students are not involved in rehearsal she works with them on acting exercises. “We start every day with a devotional, she noted. “Camp is my favorite thing to do at Cavod because you really get to know the students. Asked to describe the challenges of staging the well-known “The Lion King Jr. on the Cavod stage with rehearsal time of about two weeks, director Cordell Huyard launched into a series of exclamations. “This is an epic show, proclaimed Huyard. “It’s huge. Working with nearly 50 Cavod Musical Theatre Camp students ages 10 to 17, Huyard will strive to present a play based on what he called “one of the most popular Disney movies of all time. “The Lion King Jr. will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 665 W. Main St., New Holland, at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, and
Sunday, July 29. Amy Rau will serve as musical director, and Stephanie Morales will choreograph the show. Camp is directed by Meredith Bulgrien. According to Huyard, other challenges of staging the show are related to the authenticity of the movements and music. Because the costumes are inspired by the animals represented in the characters, the movements will also be inspired by those animals. Huyard noted that the costuming is in keeping with the music and movement. “The costumes are inspired by the animals, but they are still very human, explained Huyard. “The lions wear traditional African clothing with a head
and are working on memorization, shared Huyard. Campers were expected to have their lines memorized by the first day of camp so that blocking and choreography could be learned by the end of the first week. “The second half of the second week, we will be having tech week with costumes and props, said Huyard, who added that he has faith in the talented cast, many of whom have appeared in local theater productions. Lead roles will include Lincoln Everett as Young Simba and Gavin Haas in the role of the grown lion. Riley Fidler will play Young Nala, and Audrey Pavlica will fill the role of her older counterpart. Mufasa will be played by Ian Marcelo, and Mackenzie Neff will fill the role of Rafiki. Derrick Lambert will play Scar. Jada Corell will

Huyard added that all the movements will be choreographed, noting that there will be a complexity to each scene, in addition to African dances, which Morales is specially trained to teach. “There’s a nod to the beautiful tribal dancing (done in Africa),â€? said Huyard. Likewise, Rau is also working with campers to learn words in the several dialects represented in the show, including Swahili. “The singers are doing harmonies in Swahili (throughout) the show,â€? she explained. the Rev. Sherry Deets, rector, when greeting congregation members and guests during the special Sunday service held on July 15. In honor of the event, Deets and congregation members were dressed in period attire. Deets pointed out that the service followed the 1868 Book of Common Prayer and used songs and the language from that time period. “The service is a little different than what we’re used to,” she stated. “The language is very penitential. Enjoy the chance to learn what they did back in 1868.” Later, Deets also explained that the order of the service was slightly different. “Even though we did a recessional (today), there was no processional and recessional back then and less music,” she said. “We sang ‘Gloria in Excelsis’ at the end. (In the modern service) that would normally be done at the beginning. “It was also less participatory,” she added, noting that she appreciates that the church’s modernday services are interactive. Anniversary committee chair Joe Kirkner praised the congregation for dressing in Civil Warera garb. “This is typical of our congregation. If you ask them to do something, they will,” he stated. He also recognized special guests in attendance, including pastor Emerson Cottrell from St. Paul’s African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Coatesville. “He is in the church building that used to be our Episcopal church,” noted Kirkner. Also, in attendance was Mike Lemodetis, who portrayed the Hon. John Geary, 16th governor of Pennsylvania, who was in office during 1868. The sermon was delivered by the Rev. Joan Wylie, deacon. “There were very few deacons in those days, and if there were a deacon, it most certainly would not have been a woman,” she noted. Following the service, a special luncheon featured food that would have been served during

For the 24th consecutive summer, free walking tours are being offered throughout Chester County as part of the Town Tours and Village Walks program. The tours began in West Chester on June 14 and will continue to run on Thursday evenings through Aug. 30. Tours usually last 50 minutes and begin at 5:30 p.m. The last tour is generally held at 7 p.m. All tours are free of charge and include light refreshments. The tours are sponsored by Chester County’s Board of Commissioners through the Chester County Planning Commission, the Chester County Historical Society, Westtown Township, the Chester County Historic Preservation Network and the Chester County Conference and Visitors Bureau. The scheduled tour on July 26 will feature the Mill at Anselma. The mill, located at 1730 Conestoga Road (Route 401), Chester Springs, is a Colonial-era custom grist mill that served its local agricultural community for around 250 years. On Aug. 2, the tour will take place at the Phoenix Iron Company, 2 N. Main St., Phoenixville. Attendees will be able to learn about the Phoenix Column, which was used in the construction of bridges throughout the world. The Maple Lawn Farm, 380 Forest Manor Road, Cochranville, will be the featured tour stop on Aug. 9. There will be a display of farm equipment from the late 1800s and early 1900s, as well as some of the modern combines and tractors used today. A blacksmith will be on hand to demonstrate the forging of farm implements and horseshoes. On Aug. 16, the tour will be held at Fricks Lock Historic District in East Coventry Township, and on Aug. 30, visitors will be able tour the Bondsville Mill in East Brandywine Township. New this year as part of the series will be a supper and lecture at Historic Yellow Springs, 1685 Art School Road, Chester Springs, on Aug. 23 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Preservation architect Dan Campbell will speak about the history of milling in southeastern Pennsylvania. “Wizards” of all ages are invited to attend the first Di-Atglen Alley Wizard Faire on Saturday, July 28, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. During the event, the borough of Atglen will become an enchanted campus filled with magic and fun, with activities taking place along Main Street and Valley Avenue in Atglen. She noted that the fair will serve two purposes. “First and foremost, it is a fundraising event for the library to help finance our relocation to the center of town. In our bigger, more welcoming location, we hope to be somewhat of a community center, offering expanded
programs and resources as well as study and meeting spaces,” Metzler stated. “Equally important, however, is that the festival will be a community and family-oriented event. The library will not be charging admission to the fair and will have several free activities for children.” Those who enter the fair will come past a dragon’s watchful presence to find all kinds of entertainment. “We have a spectacular festival entrance planned, which will beckon attendees to Di-Atglen Alley,” said Metzler. “We’ll have a stage with programs running for most of the day.” Performers will include magician Professor Snark, Irish dancers and an environmental educator with live owls. An unusual feature will be an escape room, where groups must solve puzzling obstacles in the allotted time. “I only have nine slots for groups to go through, so that one might fill up pretty quickly,” Metzler said. “People can sign up for a slot when they get there.” Those who think they know their wizards can play “Wizard Quizzo.” Visitors may also learn about magical plants from the “professor” from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Of special interest to youngsters will be the “Potion Master” doing demonstrations and helping children make slime or silly putty. Other free activities for children will include face painting and make-and-take crafts. Shopping opportunities will abound, plus there will be food vendors and a beverage area. “We have a magical market for people
